The pinnacle of alien evolution, Maw is a cowardly fat blob concerned mostly with snacking and lounging. He can, however, absorb the traits of anything he eats, is virtually indestructible, and can grow to unlimited size. If he wasn't a danger to all life in the universe, he'd make the perfect pet.

This adventure game is pretty interesting. You have a pet called the Maw and you assist eachother to explore an alien planet.
The game mechanics require you to feed the Maw smaller creatures, grow bigger and even obtain powers to traverse obstacles.
It's worth a play but can get repetitive.

Barely started and it's already more fun then most of the games i own. If you enjoyed nintendo or sega games. This is like that. a fun little romp/ puzzle solver. With the two greatest heroes ever.

I had no idea this game even existed, or what it was, until Steam had it on sale.
I read some of the reviews, and downloaded the demo to give it a try, still not really knowing what this game was.
Turns out, it's kind of a puzzle game. I say "kind of" because the puzzles aren't particularily puzzling. It's just various ways that the Maw can eat things.
You play as sort of an escaped alien convict, and the Maw is like your pet. You feed him, he gets bigger. You feed him special creatures, he gets special powers. Use the special powers to get to things to eat, so he can get bigger, get big enough and he can finish the level. It's not overly complicated, but it's fun. It reminds me a little of Katamari, only with eating, instead of rolling around.

The good:
-Adorible graphics that aren't really out-dated, even though the game is old
-Simple game design/game play if you're looking for a very casual game
-Eat various creatures and see how large the Maw can get

The bad:
-Clunky controls. Half the time it feels like you're trying to wade through molasis. And the other half you're wondering why the mouse is so sensitive.
-Too much hand-holding AND not enough. Sometimes it'll tell you the stupidest things (like press "space" to dodge) and keep throwing it in your face. Other times you'll have no idea what to do (like press "space" to use Maw's ability) and you'll be struggling to figure out what to do, not because the puzzle is hard, but because you didn't know what key to press. When in doubt, press space.
-Camera angles..... the camera angles are just SOOOO frustrating sometimes. When you turn, the camera decides to turn in random directions, and you can move the mouse to turn the camera, but it only moves about a centimeter at a time, more often than not it'll take you more time to turn the camera than it will to complete the puzzle.

All-in-all it's not a bad game. But it's certainly not worth it at full price. I got it on sale for $2.39 (including the DLCs) and that's around what this game is worth. It's fun, but it's not very engaging. And if the controls were less infuriating I would probably be feeling differently about it, but as it stands, I would not recommend this game at full price. Buy it on sale, and it'll be worth your few dollars.

Can't save within a level. Only important when you have to leave 75% in for a pet (or, I guess, chiled) emergency then you have to start the level all over again. Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable, diverting, and yes, let's face it, adorable game. Great to play with a grandchild on your lap, cheering you on. :-)

This game is so utterly beautiful; I can't describe it any better than love. Love at first sight. I saw the game on Steam sale. It carefully approached me, getting closer every heartbeat, until it came to life in my hands. Everyone must play this game and I strongly recommend this to any player under the age of 93,25.

This game is cute.
It's a puzzle game with very bright and pleasing graphics. Nothing too intense, but colorful and vibrant.

Basically during each level, you find things to feed Maw. Different creatures provide different effects and you need to find your way out of the level.

The controls were a little quirky when trying to jump, but all in a all a fun game worth the dollar or so I paid.

You are basically leading an eating machine around puzzle maps and point it at something. It is really simple. Just do not buy any DLC. Every bit of it is horrible inter-genre fuckery and the Maw has trouble doing simple things.

Fallen Lemming
Fallen Lemming

A delightful... did I just use that word? Sure... why not... delightful game for all audiences. Clean cartoony graphics, challenging yet accessible puzzles, and cute characters. Also, the download is only like 230mb, it's not a bloated piece of crud with pre-rendered video everywhere. I respect that.

Andros

Nice idea, but poorly executed. The porting is dreadful and the game ends in 1-2 hours (maybe for good since is too repetitive) ,buy only during sales if you are curious

Before I begin my review let me suggest you that if you want to give this game a fair chance, please bear in mind that the game was released in 2009 so expect some limitations.

This is a short and entertaining game, the mechanics are very simple but the pace of exploration + puzzles works most of the time. The Maw can be entertaining for an adult but it reaches another level if kids play it. I reckon that they will love the characters and find the game to be very funny.

The Dlc levels offer an extended playtime, because they are mixed with the main campaign.

In conclussion, if you decide to buy this game and its dlc during a sale you will discover an enjoyable experience, but keep in mind that the game is old by today's standards and it offers a basic challenge.

The Maw is a fun little game and probably very enjoyable for a young audience. The levels are straightforward and the puzzles simple. If you like the colorful and cartoonish graphics, then you can get about 6 hours of relaxing amusement out of it. Also, it's great for achievement hunting!

The controls are a bit clunky when it comes to camera movement and sometimes it's hard to tell your purple little friend in which direction you want to go with the beetull ability, but those are minor flaws.

I would recommend to buy it on sale as the full price seems a bit too high for the little amount of content you get.

Only a short review this time around.

I have only played for a few minutes, and I am giving up, simply because I cannot turn up mouse sensitivirty enough to be able to enjoy this game. i have to sweep my mouse across my desk 3 times to turn 360 deg. I have a small desk, but not that small.
I have played FPS games for 25 years. I think I know how to mess with mouse sensitiity. I have a 2000DPI mouse. Don't bother insulting me with "did you turn you mouse up" or "did you change the ingame settings".

Seems like a cutesy, kid-friendly puzzler.
For the game size and look, it's a very compact download (350mb) which shows excellent coding by the programmers.

Ntas

What promises to be an entertaining game is ruined by the most frustrating camera angles and there is no way to move the camera except for running in incredibly wide arcs to finally face the way you want it to.

This is a great platformer/puzzle game and really enjoyed my time with it. It is a little bit reminescent of a great N64 game, the way it plays. I would not recommend the Speeder Lane DLC, but the other two were great.

Very cool game. I played it before and now i bought it. It's fun to see how Maw from very little grow to that size! :O And its cute how he likes Franky(Or something like that i dont remember his name XD). Ending was awesome and the only bad thing about this game is that it's short :

I've had The Maw forever and ever and I've started and stopped it a few times. I finally decided to finish it up, and I'm glad I did. It's not a perfect game, but it is difficult not to like it in spite of its flaws because it is just so relaxed and pleasant to play. You can't really screw anything up, so you are free to just run around feeding stuff to your blob buddy, smashing stuff, and simply having a good time. Considering it regularly goes on sale for like a buck, I'd say it's worth your time.

"Bob&quot…

The Maw is a pretty fun little action/adventure game in which you are a cute little alien that is imprisoned on a space ship next to a giant mouth with an eyeball. The ship crashes on a planet and you proceed to throw every living creature into that giant mouth.

While the Maw seems pretty light-hearted and not all that-challenging, the game has a darker side behind its cute and seemingly innocent exterior. The first adorable little creature that you see (and hug) is eaten by the Maw, and your character is noticeably shocked by this, but those feelings of sadness and disbelief at the Maw eating that cute little marshmallowy alien baby are quickly forgotten as you try to fill the Maw's insatiable craving for adorable little creatures. This game, in short, is about addiction. Possibly also genocide. Why am I throwing cute babies into a bottomless pit filled with teeth? I don't really know why, and I don't care about their feelings anymore, I just need to throw more alien babies in the pit. I could stop any time I want. Really.

The control scheme is pretty good - I can't speak for the keyboard functions, but the game handles very well with an xbox 360 controller, providing button prompts in the game where needed.

I was pretty disappointed by the DLC for this game; it's simply just some extra levels that should have been included in the game anyway given how short it is. Having said that though, if you are going to buy the Maw, I would recommend getting the Mawesome pack because without the DLC there just isn't enough game here and it doesn't cost a whole lot more than the game by itself.

The final verdict? The Maw is short, but sweet. The game is fairly easy, but it's somewhat cathartic to throw helpless creatures into your own pet monster.

7 out of 10, would throw more cute alien babies into a bottomless pit.

I bought it for my sister. She played it for exactly 2 hours.
Then she quit and she never wanted to play it again.
When i played it, it seemed cheaply made and with overall bad puzzles and combat mechanics that get old very quickly.

Puzzles require you to say "Oh yeah that spot... how did i get there again?" and then spend 15 minutes hunting for the rock you climbed on to get up there, or the thing that took you to that spot.

Portal is really a better choice for puzzling

The Maw is an adorable platformer game about a little blue alien and his purple alien pet/friend that eats everything.

I think this game is geared at children and families and casual gamers... which isn't a bad thing. The reason I think this, is that there was no way of really dying in the game... You can make mistakes, but they're forgiving and generally reversable.

The characters and world are charming and cute, and are something that I wouldn't mind sharing with a 5 year old... or their grandmother, believing it will be received well by them both.

cromignon
cromignon

Kinda like a 'Reverse Pikmin' game. You lead a thing around, make it eat things, and sometimes a thing that the thing eats makes it do a thing, then you use the thing to solve puzzles created by other things. It's cute and it's fun and it's just short enough not to get repetitive, even when going for 100%.

Estranged2
Estranged2

Obviously "inspired" by Katamari Damacy and Ico, the Maw is quite disappointing.

1) TOO SCRIPTED.
Everything you do has nice funny animations, but is too scripted. Quite often the funny interactions are very passive - you're being dragged, something happens without your intervention in a cut-scene, etc. It feels like a movie, not like a game.

2) LAME SCALE.
The game doesn't scale well. The maw grows gradually to the size of a giraffe - it took me 5 hours of tedious eating to get to that size in a linear fashion. And then... at the end of the level he suddenly grows from the size of a giraffe to the size of a planet eating blob. They didn't do the intermediate part - which games like Pudding Monsters, Katamari Damacy, Heat Signrature or even Beyond Good and Evil (at its very end) do.

3) UGLY.
Even though the game is done by people who understand expressive animation very well, it's very ugly in an environmental sense (this also applies to their next creation, Explosion Man). I usually don't care about graphics, so something has to be very ugly to make me say this.

4) BAD PORT.
The game is so badly ported on the PC, that the mouse doesn't move the camera. Fortunately, I had a gamepad, and the camera controls worked that way.

DISCLAIMER:
I didn't play through the final level, because I have ethical problems with eating a planet just to save my ass.

The Maw is a short, fun, 3D platformer where you play as Frank. Frank is some weird alien creature that escapes a boring life or prison or whatever and comes into contact with the Maw, whom he is able to control. Together, Frank and the Maw fight through various levels as the Maw also eats different creatures, growing at various points. Enemies vary but it can feel repetitive. Then again, this game was designed for children and I'm 24. Anyway, it's been in my library for a long time and I figured I might as well play it having just finished a number of other longer games.

What's not to like? Run around, be cute, and feed the entire universe to your new pet. The controls are fine, the interface is a little clunky, but the overall gameplay is mostly pretty straightforward - run around and get Maw to eat everything. Be sure to find new and interesting things to feed Maw, if only for the neat new effects it gives.

HugoSigil

What is here is good and a few puzzles may make you stop and think for a while, but more variety in activities and some gameplay corrections could help. A run button so you can move faster over extensive terrain, getting to play as The Maw a few times would have been appreciated, a first person camera so you can get a better perspective of where things are and where to go next and the game could have taken advantage of the fact that the main character is eventually smaller than The Maw and can fit in their mouth or perform actions like take advantage of the size difference.

I do like how the game aesthetic is at odds with The Maw's vicious activities. Everything looks cute and cuddly but The Maw eats people WHOLE, sometimes more than one at a time. The cutscene at the end of the speed bike DLC level is a great example of this.

I get the feeling that the entire galaxy is eventually eaten up by The Maw and his friend eventually falls victim to his appetite without The Maw knowing. If this game ever gets a follow up, the threat of that could be a place to start the story.

First time around, I loved this game, played it all in pretty much one sitting (on xbox, then again on PC)

I found myself randomly thinking about this game today. YEARS after I originally played it. I think that means it was a good game.

You should play it. There’s something oddly memorable about that big purple maniac.

Kargor

I'm a bit uncertain, again. this game should get a "0" max, but we don't have that. So, I'm voting it down.

It's kind of cute. There is no noticeable story; it appears you are captured by some evil guys, you see some blob (aka "Maw") in your prison, suddenly the prison ship crashes, and you end up with your new little friend travelling through the landscape, trying to go somewhere other than were you've been.

The game quickly feels samey as nothing really changes. Sure, your little friend gets bigger, but that's about it in terms of character development. Certain monsters will give special abilities when eaten -- but the levels are carefully designed for these so there isn't much in terms of puzzling. You might need to be careful if you want to 100% a level -- the game starts locking paths back to make it more difficult, but it really just feels annoying. But even the levels that remain open -- at one point I was missing a single enemy, and kept walking all over the place. Or crawling, as it felt. Movement is so slow... but I couldn't find it, so eventually I gave up. I don't even know whether "100%" really does anything at all.

In the end, I was just hoping that it would end soon, going through the never-changing motions, feeling more annoyed by becoming chained segments with no way back. Hence, I cannot possible give it a "+".

TLDR: Youth oriented. Leash a little slime around and grow it by eating things. Some puzzles and quotas for progression. Play Slime Rancher instead.

The Maw is a cute little game in which you have to collect and eat creatures, to bypass certain obstacles, and unlock progression. The game is probably youth oriented and the audiovisuals hold up pretty nicely. The game can get a bit monotonous as you drag the maw around to eat little critters just so you can grow it big enough to eat bigger stuff and so on and so forth. New levels add in new types of obstacles, which are mostly annoying in that you do not always know how you are meant to be able to bypass them.

Xbox360 pad was detected and working correctly. The game itself might be servicable entertainment for much younger gamers but failed to really hold my attention past the first level as the game became a bit more puzzley. I would not want to have to resort to a guide. The game struggles a little with the camera angles and the scenery and critter types you encounter feel a tad samey at times. Would rather archive this for declutter.

I love games like this... not really sure what it would be called but I'd compare it to pikmin only instead of growing an army you're growing a creature(Pikmin is much more difficult though). Puzzling, light action, charming... it's a fun little game.
There were times it felt slow but generally it's a relaxing experience. Don't buy this for the platforming as it's extremely limited. Buy this if you want to grow a blob monster and eat everything that moves.

A perfect blend of adorable main characters, buttery-smooth gameplay, pixar visuals and audio , even the soundtrack is excellent and fits the feel of the game perfectly . Roll [them] together and you have one very tasty yumyum. Not a big game of course so Enjoy it while it lasts, though, because Maw's stay isn't a very long one. The game can easily be beaten in a weekend of light playing. Some might play again to find everything, but most will call it a day.

I actually really enjoyed this game. Despite it's Disney/ Pixar looks and cuteness. With it's overall kid friendliness as well it's target audience being children. I would recommend this game. This is coming from someone in their 30's, who likes playing the goriest, most bloodthirsty FPS games. My only criticism is that it can be beaten in 4-6 hours with all the DLC.

DISCLAIMER: This is a first impressions review, and NOT a full review

The Maw is a game developed by and published by Twisted Pixel Games

The game offers some nice graphics, although some ugly glitches here and there, it is pleasant all the same

The Maw overall, however, is a fun game to play, and it does get boring if being played for a long time, but is a very good action adventure game to play in short bursts!

I played the maw originally on Xbox 360 many years back, and seeing it on PC these days was a happy memory that I cheerfully relived.

Quickly said: The maw is a unique little game that has a playtime of ~3-4 hours, it's not very long but it has enough to me just enjoyable for exactly 3-4 hours, any longer and it would have become a drag, any shorter and you would have felt like you finished it too quickly.
The puzzles are relatively simple and the story is..... nonexistent really, but as something to mindlessly play and quickly 100% for the satisfaction its a worthwhile experience with incredibly fun music and neat creature designs. (Except for the snuffle, curse that thing)

HOWEVER, I can see why the DLC is around a euro each, and why they are labeled as "deleted scenes". While Brute Force and River Redirect are simply additional levels that pad the gameplay and are naturally added inbetween the main story levels, making them feel like they were always supposed to be there if you would be a first time player.
But Speeder Lane is probably one of the most annoying and worst levels around. It is an attempt at a top-down vehicle shooter that just does not work, and seems to only serve to use whatever coding they had for a later level that is incredibly short, for a bit longer. The music in this level, especially during its "boss fight", is not as pleasant and unique as the rest of the game, on top of the level adding very little enjoyable gameplay- It is mostly repetitive actions on a very repetitive map without the use of the maw creature.
If you are considering buying this game, don't buy the speeder lane DLC, save your time.

One of my all-time favorite XBLA developers has always been Twisted Pixel. An unspoken god of the 360 marketplace, an absolute titan. This is the first game they ever made, and despite how much I love their work and this game, it's probably the weakest entry they've ever done.

This game is sorta like Katamari with the whole "get bigger" mentality, but significantly slower-paced, with way too many cutscenes that get replayed for all growth, collectibles found, and powerups grabbed. Not only that, but Maw isn't the playable character, he's a minion you control with another character.

Still, this was an independently-developed 3D platformer from a time where independent developers were still finding their footing in the industry. It played a huge role in the popularity of the marketplace, the new grounds indie developers would find themselves breaking, and the landscape of gaming in general. Remember: this is a pre-Minecraft world where the most successful indie games were Castle Crashers and Cave Story. This game was an accomplishment at the time.

That being said, it never held a candle to Splosion Man or Comic Jumper, later games by the same team, and just leaves me wanting Steam ports of those games. This game is clunky, it's aged weirdly, and it would be a lot of fun if you're a child who likes easy busywork or an adult with a HUGE soft spot for these kinds of games (like me).

I love this game, but don't buy it if you're not willing to overlook how weird it is by today's standards.

This was quite possibly my first indie game. Back when it released, I had barely dipped my toe into Xbox 360 and was still getting used to achievements, Xbox Live, and the concept of digital games and DLC. While it wasn't something that rocked my world, it was still a fun time and I was happy to play it.

Fast-forward to now and I went back to it, seeing if it still held up. The answer is yes, it still holds up. I actually had more fun with it than I did when it first game out. It's not a long game by any means, but what's there is some of the most unique and refreshing gameplay of its time. It's an absolute joy and is only made better with the three DLC missions. These missions are seamlessly added to the game's main story, so I highly recommend you get The Mawesome Pack.

The game is rather short and really not challenging at all. Essentially, you can't loose, you can only be delayed until you figure things out, and your need close to no dexterity and very little brain work to get through the levels. I think for most games, this would be a damning review, but as I wrote in the beginning: For my purpose, this game was exactly as I wanted it.

I remember playing the demo for this game when I was younger on the Xbox 360, right next to Kinectimals and other strange gems that no one really seems to remember.

Never buying it because I was of course too young, I come back now while it's on sale, and buy the bundle for a cheap 2-3 bucks. One of the best decisions I ever made.
This game is a simple "puzzle" game, you don't really do much except "solve levels" by feeding your purple blob friend, and honestly I like it for that. It's nothing too complex, and it isn't hard for anyone to get into, even if it's the first game they've ever played.

That being said, I recommend it. It's cheap, colorful, simple, and if you were like younger me, maybe you'll recognize this old gem and hold it closer to your heart than before.
