If you're into crafting games and the zen of building up from nothing to something, this will be right up your alley. I think of it as like a "Stardew Valley", but instead of a homesteading setting, it's a survival-on-a-deserted-island setting.

I found it especially interesting that it doesn't use typical RPG elements like leveling up to unlock things. Rather, nothing changes about your character, but the items you craft expand your library of things you can craft, and in turn allow you to get better results to make your character better.

The game throws you a bone by allowing you to command monkeys to automate tasks like fending off bad guys or crafting things that take too long on your own while you do other things. It's tricky at first but you get the hang of it as you go.

The game was well built, there's a lot of love in it, I have no complaints. The only things I would change are character customizations (Stardew Valley offered a little more, like making your own hats and clothes), expanding the library of crafting recipes (there's only one type of bow for example, maybe a different type could have faster flying arrows), and being a survival-based game, could use a mode where you have more stats to maintain your survival, like getting proper sleep for your stamina, staying hydrated, not getting sick (the game only has you worry about hunger which gets easily solved with the ton of meat you get through the game).

I'm enjoying the gameplay and the mechanics of it all.

I really love how you can automate the monkeys when you need to craft objects and materials for bigger things.

Also, the fact that you can play with friends due to Online Co-Op, makes the game that much better!

Definitely a fun game.. it can take some time to understand a play the game.. but when you get a hang of the game it can be exciting to play.

I really enjoyed the game but it kept freezing while I was playing from the very begining when I bought it. I'm really desapointed.

ShiftySnow

easy going vibes from this game, it's a nice break from the more fast-paced games I play. An absolute blast to play with a buddy, but a full lobby is a bit much if you don't sustain your materials really well.

i really like the game for its graphics and laid back atmosphere, i think it would be great if it got mod support the modding community could really take this already great game to the next level

I want to like the game. It has all the basic components; crafting, building, combat, resource collection, followers, a good art-style, and more.

The problem is:

* Much of the game is very tedious. Most of what your monkey-army does, only "require" monkeys, because your character is handicapped. For example inventory space is expanded by having a monkey following you with a chest. Crafting speed is needlessly slow for the character. Monkeys picking up items is only needed because there's no auto-pick-up.
* Sorting/finding items is impossible. Your monkeys just dump stuff in random chests. If you need to find something like a hinge or food, the easiest way is to initiate a crafting recipe, and see what chests the monkeys drop items off on.
* Compared to most similar games, it takes an absurd amount of work to automate anything.
* There isn't much (or any) depth when it comes to weapons, tools, armor, trinkets, materials, etc.

The reason I'm giving it a negative review, is because it's been out for quite some time, and plenty of other games in the genre have done much better, like Necesse, Wayward, Forager, and others.

As a long time fan of a certain tower defense game starring monkeys popping bloons, it is without a doubt that I say my favorite part of this game is the monkey friends

THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC! Plays a lot like Stardew valley without having to race home at the end of each day. You explore new islands each of which has their own biom. Rescuing monkeys and building forts all over the map. The game is huge!!!! I have played for over 42 hours and have only uncovered a fraction of the world!
Great fun and excellent value for money!

well done rpg, from free battle to inventory system, and enough to keep you interested enough to explore all the islands and see through the completion of the game. even better with friends!

At the time of this review there is a game breaking bug that makes it unplayable if you plan on running it at higher then 1080p. been reported for 2 years with no fix. No way to save settings due to UI bug.

If you have a higher then 1080p monitor beware it might be unplayable and not fixable.

Draylynn

Game starts fullscreen, ultra-wide or 4K players will have problems accessing and saving the settings for the game to make it visible, requires third-party tools.
Building is exceptionally tedious especially with temperamental input, you can be stood there mashing the LCTRL key and getting nothing done, no feedback, nothing.
Tutorial is poorly done, no idea how to get the monkey to do anything and it won't take any tools or instructions, will hold a coconut, and by hold, drag it behind it with an imaginary fishing line.

Good game, gets a little redundant having to always hand craft the first few items but im sure the more i play the less ill have to!

If you find this game on sale, buy it, it's enough fun for 10 bucks or less. Don't buy it for full price.
There are a bunch of problems sadly. And i am not talking about the time it takes to craft things. Use your monkeys!

I am talking about the relatively low amount of content.
And an even bigger problem i encountered: Saves not working properly.
The following happened to me twice:
I played for hours and saved regularly, basically every single in-Game day.
Unity crashes and with it the game.
I boot up the game again.
The last 1-2 hours of progress are gone, despite frequent saving.

This is extremely frustrating, because i do want to play, but if i just lose so much progress, it kills the fun...

Calmwalker
Calmwalker

Not bad. Sale price, not full price. Game feels incomplete. Other then a stint of making walls/spike traps theres not much to make the monkeys do but arm up and follow you, Resources dont all respawn so once youve harvested the area, its just, go to nearby island, fill very limited inventory, go back, unload, without any challenge. Also the "negative" environment effects didn't seem to actually do anything.

Zulphar
Zulphar

Sailed to an island away from my home, got tons of resources, went back to base and game crashed. Lost 33 slots full of items that took me hours to get. Game doesn't autosave and if you don't have a bed on you at all times you are screwed. Unfair.

Got this on sale for me and my buds and it was.... meh, kinda ok tbh, the MONKE gameplay is fun and it's rly funny seeing ur bud running around with 9 monkeys all armed with Spiked Iron Clubs clubbing FILTHY ORC PEASANTS to oblivion, but everything else was pretty boring. The progression and material collecting were both tedious and while you have a shit load of crafting options and a few walls and floors to build, they are all so time consuming and material expensive that it's just not worth it.
Overall i wouldn't rly recommend it outside of a sale and/or if u have some retarded friends to play with u.

This game is so addicting! Loads of fun solo or with a friend :)
Game-play and mechanics are great, combat is good, graphics are super cute, and you just gotta love the monkeys!
I do admit this survival game isn't AS challenging or grindy as other survival games BUT it definitely has lots of content and things to do that you can spend hours in the game. Give it a try!!

Coming off of Team17's Escapists, I'm really enjoying the new feel of Survivalists. This game gives options for either sandbox development or full dungeon diving adventures. Great game

Not a very fun monkey jgame. Had a lot of little problems and the monkey wouldn't stop bitching at me. Stupid monkey crafting is to the retarded jgamers. Not being able to craft in bulk wastes my time. It's another open-world-survival-crafting game with a monkry you might find. You give the bitchy little shit something to do and when it can't because your dumbass didn't give the brown turd supplies it fucking screams.

I got this in sale and I'd say it's still not worth it

Although it is based off of and takes place in the same universe as The Escapist series, it didn't really feel right. The controls and UI felt kind of janky and it really wasn't a fun experience. I was really hoping that this would be an amazing game because I am a big fan of The Escapist and The Escapist 2. Unfortunately, there just wasn't much to do and no motivation to make me want to play more. Really sad that this game just wasn't anything to talk about, as I probably would still be playing the game to this day if it just wasn't so boring. Can't recommend.

Seemed promising and enjoyed the beginning. Played briefly with a friend but they couldn't use an item for some reason (which is left click to use an item). We soon discovered it was because the game changed their 'use item' keybind from LMB to LCTRL. My friend couldn't change it back either, the game wouldn't let LMB be an option for a keybind at all. Soon enough when I opened my controls menu to check my own controls, the same thing happened to me and I was unable to use an item with the LMB. Now we both can't use the LMB for anything and couldn't find a way to fix it either.

Be wary of buying this. This is a massive bug and completely ruined the game for us. Thankfully, we played under 2 hours and can get a refund. Would suck to be stuck with a game that you can't even use left click in.

Level12Boss

This game is like Stardew Valley: Open World Edition. It's still delightfully chill and buildy, but you get out and explore a far more open, diverse and interesting world.

The heart of the game is probably the best itemization and crafting progression model I've seen anywhere. There's always that next incremental step to take, but it's really smooth and slick without any need for resource grinding or hunting for rare drops. It genuinely moves along at a perfectly balanced pace that keeps the game fresh and interesting without becoming a chore. Same with the different environments, and randomly generated dungeons. All of which have great pixel graphics with lots of variety, and terrific SFX and music.

On top of this you get to train literal monkeys to do your crafting, gardening, resource gathering, loot hauling, and even fighting. It's hilarious and useful and well implemented.

User interface is a little wacky as it's built for PC, touch screens and gamepads, but with keyboard and mouse it works well enough once you get accustomed to some of the UI inconsistencies. Combat is pretty basic, but you get to mix in some dash and roll moves, and there's a variety of weapons with several levels of upgrades (spears, swords, clubs, blow darts, bows, bombs, etc).

Honestly, a great little game that flew under the radar for most people I suspect. I don't think it's being updated anymore but is great as is.

I haven't got to the end-game yet but this looks like maybe 50-75 hours of gameplay as a solo experience. Terrific value at this point for anyone looking for a retro-chill RPG / builder adventure.

EDIT: so now that I'm at hour 40, I can say the last 30% of the game is basically resource grinding. I still find this enjoyable as a chill experience, but it gets repetitive. A completionist will get through everything this game has to offer in about 40 hours.

Definitely a game better played with another person, but still a great single-player game. There are some glitches in multi-player mode but not anything that makes it impossible or harder to play. Great game!

I recommend buying if its on a good sale, the price tag of 25$ is a bit high for the content.

The survivalists is a prime example of team17's current games. Its worth it if you find it on a decent sale but dont spend the full 25$ on this. The ai monkeys being programmable is a very unique feature that I hope to see more games copy. The game itself gets boring quick and is very easy overall.

Ishvii

+ You can train monkeys to do things for you
+ The artwork is nice
+ There are vaults underground you can explore

- As with pretty much all other Team17 games, it was abandoned shortly after release, despite promising lots of new updates
- Training monkeys is clunky
- The controls and the UI are really bad
- All the "OK" buttons, you have to hold the mouse button to confirm instead of just clicking them
- If you need 3 of something, you have to open the menu, craft one of them, wait, then open the menu and craft the next one
- If you want to "cancel" building a blueprint, you first have to choose another blueprint to start building, then enable the "Erase blueprint" button, which is a DIFFERENT key to the "destroy building" button

Picking up takes a lot of time. If you require lore notes to actually learn the lore you are doing it wrong. Crafting is not even mediocre, it's bad. You can get items as a loot and you still need to craft it in order to unlock it. Everything is shrouded in mystery of unlocking the content rather than the mystery itself. Rolling giving you immunity doesn't match the theme of the game. The theme is that the game is a survival game, abundance of resources and lack of danger in any sense. No water or food requirement, no wound management, no heat management. This game is not a survival game, it's a craft and fight game.

Gert B. Frobe

I think the majority of reviews are spot on. The game has all of the right stuff to make for a great survival game... but it just somehow misses the mark. I think how close it is to being good makes that the fact that it isn't even worse.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, if you have any type of monitor that is not a standard 1920 x 1080. The game does not support other resolutions despite what devs say, as the game will change its resolution on startup, even if you set launch options to say otherwise. If you have a non standard monitor, the game is literally unplayable as the bottom half of the screen is cut off. To make matters worse, the devs have known of this issue for over a year and won't fix it.

Pros:
- 100% completion (in terms of achievements and things to do I guess) in less than 40 hours thanks to the multiplayer system.
- Monkey system is a no-brainer too for these type of grindy games. Might need to get used to it cause sometimes they do have a monkey brain and will do not as you told.
- Good time spent with my girl

Cons:
Game gets dull for the first few hours, there's another guy in his review that I can relate my experience with, he had explained how he never left the 1st island due to no concrete reason to explore because most of the things can be progressed in the 1st island. Game can also get a little bit tedious with the quest, it felt like chores rather than being excited to do it. Also, don't get me started with the combat system. When you obtained a lot of monkeys in the long run, situation will become hectic real fast during combat. The aiming/locking system is a whack, you often hit the air rather than the enemy itself. No serious boss enemy that needs proper planning except for the orc captain that can summon a dozen of orcs minion. That'll grind your gears since you need proper parry to deal with them. No good aiming/locking system = no good parries.

I play mostly on switch - the game would actually be enjoyable if they would fix bugs. The bug allowing anyone to join your session even if it’s set to friends only has been around for 6+ months, and I doubt they’ll ever fix it. I’ve lost a lot of my resources due to other players joining - they join with all permissions turned on, and if you’re not fast, they will steal everything they can before you have time to kick them or turn off permissions. It’s really frustrating when you just want to play with friends, but other people join to loot you instead of working on their own game.

Don't get me wrong; it's okay.. But these people don't deserve to get away with releasing another half-finished game and not updating it.

Honestly game started out great, combat is fun and simple, crafting isn't too bad, but the game just felt very copy paste after the 3rd island, barely any new mobs, animals dropping the same materials as early game, stuff you can get on island 3 will be strong enough to kill mobs in 2-3 hits for the rest of the game except bosses, it just feels so unfinished and that sucks, because it started out so great, i was so eager to explore and find more companions. also multi player doesn't actually work properly? your partners dont get the recipes the host gets, so its basically single player... but your friends can join you, that's about the extent of that. With some fixes and updates this could be such a beautiful game and i would instantly change my thumbs down to a very happy thumbs up, but in its current state i can't honestly suggest it to anyone unless its on sale and you wanna dink around for 10-20hours.

it is a fun game but in coop a quite a bit of stuff is disabled for non host players such as quest recipes, destroy mode which make less enjoyable for coop. destroy should allowed/disabled by host choice. All quest item/recipes should be given to everyone. Its stupid i have to leave lobby and go into single player to craft items like sail, bomb and trinkets which i have to unlock without my friends even though i bought this game for coop. Also even if you unlock the items in single player you still cant craft them in coop. I wish they fix coop so i dont have to play single player on the just to have the same stuff unlocked in the coop game my friend and I started together

Honestly to be blunt, this game is a scam. It costs $40 (australian) for a game that I honestly thought at first was a beta, but no this is the full release and it's not getting any more updates (the last one was a year ago as of writing this). It's fun at first until you realise each island (essentially just a biome) is a complete copy paste of each other just with a different skin. A game that costs $40 should give you days worth of gameplay (think don't starve together) this game only gave me 8 hours before I had run out of things to do. The amount of positive reviews on this game is baffling, at this point I'm convinced that it's spam or a bunch of 5 year olds with no concept of money or value, because there is no way that the hundreds of positive reviews that just say "nice" or "good game" are genuine and take the massive price tag into account.

Just, do NOT buy this game. Please don't make the mistake I did, if you really want to play it because it is a nice game, (had it been sold as a mobile game for $10) then just download the free demo because that's literally the entire game, I was under the impression that there would be more with the full game. But there's not. It's just the same thing over and over again until your begging for it to be over.

Kutsuu Mugen

Honestly if your a fan of survival games, I would stay clear of this game as I just do not recommend.
I've never quit a game of this genre so fast before along with my girlfriend and friend, that also like these types of games.

The Controls are just out right bad and changing them can lead to issues of not being able to do things.
The whole idea that everyone that is playing needs to do the same thing to progress and unlock new things is just out right stupid.

The starter tools to break rocks/trees (3-4) breaks so quickly and needs to be re-crafted multiple times just got tedious and annoying.

There's not much more I could say as we didn't get very far due to the game just being boring, tedious and so annoying, there are far better games to play and enjoy.

Pretty simple, if the game has monkeys its automatically good. We have Monkey ball, bloons, and now this. Tell me a game with monkeys that is bad.

Excellent crafting/survival games. Co-op is why we bought it, and it's super fun to play together.

I love base building, survival, minion controlling type of games and this check all of it. I know updates arent as frquent but enough to at least enjoy a chill game. Hope they release a better version. I would only suggest getting this during a sale though.

The game is fun but!!! as it currently is, its too short. the content there is goes in the blink of an eye. construction at all is uselesss, just place a bed on the outside as wasting resources building an enclosure provides no advantage or disadvantage.

combat is fun, but could be better with the option of been able to block to go along the dodge mechanic.
there is no armor or clothing besides your starting one, so... you have to bring some food along to binge when fighting stronger enemies. monkey automation only gets you so far as you are unable to create conditions like
Do X amount or Do only if there is less than.

quality of life things such as sorting chests and auto filling arent here, so you have your stuff trown on the floor and have your monkeys fill the chests, but you cant keep any order or category system.

you cant bring npcs to your camp, so you either build a portal to each one of them or travel back and forth.

the lack of content currently makes it so you reach 1 island and become pretty much able to build everything, so any consecutive visit is just going to mine more to build back ups for tools and weapons.

repair tasks are managed as a single crafting order so you either do it manually or build several repair benches to have the monkeys repair every single item you use.

farming is basic, ranching cannot be automated.

fishing is terribly basic, there is only 1 type of fish.

cooking is just several recipes of healing items, some add a small buff but no need
to go for the high tear enough that will require more resources just stick to the low tier that heals a lot

the game is good! but as it is now, just buy it on sale.
I hope to see more content, waaay more content added to the game cause right now. it feels like an early access game released as a full game.

Great online multiplayer/co-op survivalcraft game, with an emphasis more on the craft than survival. The monkey dynamics make it possible to play solo without a massive disadvantage, while still not being too chaotic to play in a team. My only wish is that you could have the option of starting a fresh character with no crafting knowledge- by default your character and their knowledge is retained between all worlds, which is useful but not great if you'd wanted to start fresh on a new island. Overall love the game!

Why is the durability of items SO SO SO poor?! I am not even playing game content because my item is destroyed by taking down one tree, such a waste of time and a poor decision. This could be fun, yet I am just making the same items over and over and over because of poor item durability choices.

Wasn't expecting this game to be that fun but I got it maybe a day ago and have already been loving it dearly. Its like the equivalent of Minecraft but with more exploration and... well... honestly better graphics and story too.

I am refunding this game. I was not looking for a controller game.
Listen, I tried rebinding the keys and all but this game was not designed for a Keyboard and Mouse and even if you tinker with the keybindings things will not make sense. This bad start really made me not want to try any further.
I gave it two goes, with and without fussing with keybinds, and here's what I found:

    • The initial keybindings are rage inducing. I changed the Space default to E in most cases. Escape closes windows, making it too far from the buttons that you also press to open the windows.
    • Hold down Space or LMB to close a tutorial box. Literally why?! I get the holding down if you don't have that many buttons(like on a controller) but to just get past a box?
    • LCtrl+LMB to take all (if it even works, often it doesn't). No double click to take a stack and no buttons to do these things.
    • I moved a chair further from my base because I kept interacting with it and not the object I was highlighting or closest to.
    • Holding down the button to start crafting isn't instant to start, so often I was under the impression it wasn't working. This button also defaults to LCtrl and not the default use button of Space.
    • Sliders for things that don't need to be sliders. Hair color, hair style, shirt color, number of things (like how many monkeys to select I think, but I only had one monkey so maybe that wasn't what the stack was for)
    • Unable to rotate blueprints, like your bed.
    • I wanted to delete a save game, so I pressed Back-Space, like the bottom of the screen told me, but that does not work.

I don't really want to deter anyone from trying this, but if you are looking for a similar experience to other Mouse and Keyboard survival games you might end up just as grumpy as I did.
