Fun enough game.

Found out after playing all the way through that the devs never bothered to finish the game.
- Lots of cars/carriages can't be unlocked
- 4 of the last collectable photo locations don't work
- Worst of all the story just randomly stops in the middle of a storyline.

Save your money/time and avoid this one like I wish I could go back and do.

Smurff-a-thon2k
Smurff-a-thon2k

Was trying to wait for this to go on sale, only to never see it on sale in ~2 years.

Played the (eh-hm) "shareware" version for a while and loved it.

I can 100% say this game is worth it at full price to support the devs.

It just makes my life happy to jump in and watch my train drive along and interact with all the FANTASTICALLY designed pixel art fantasy train cars and engines.

tl;dr:
too many interruptions to be a chill idle game
too surreal to be a train builder game
too much gaminess to be a trading game

Tiny Rails is very much a mobile game retrofitted to remove the mtx. If you like watching sprites of scenery roll past your train, it's for you. If you're more of a railway logistics or realism person, you'll find this game creatively bankrupt.

In practice, it's one of those occasional interaction games. Sometimes you need to press the cleanup buttons. Sometimes you need to trigger the train to leave the station. Sometimes you need to click on the cash-producing railcars to clear them out. You can skip most of that by just keeping the game closed and letting the number passively go up.

The story is pretty much textbook "Evil Megacorporation tries to Purchase Your Business and will go so far as to Crush You if you refuse so go do your Business to Show those Bad Businessmen that You're Real." It serves the purpose of keeping you going whenever you get bored of watching numbers go up, or a cash influx in the early stages when you're not making money hand over fist and moving at mach 3 speed.

But the above isn't enough to make this a negative. In fact, it's quite nice for train ASMR and such in the background. In terms of price it's hard to justify. Ten (Canadian) dollars of content? Sure, but most of it is watching sprites repeat in the background, and whatever effort it took to make them transition in the right place. The lower level railcar sprites which you'll never see again once you upgrade that car to the maximum level.

As for quality of life, there are a good number of annoyances. If you enable auto-departure, your train's menu will vanish at stops until you leave. The auto-repair and auto-clean buttons feel as though they would have used the Premium Currency in the mobile incarnation, so that you didn't have to click every car to fix and freshen them, and could easily be combined into a single button (or better yet, automated with employee services along with auto-collecting revenue from the railcars that generate it). Finally, there's no way to cancel auto-departure once you reach a station: disabling the setting only takes effect on the next station and leaves you with the annoying task of having to reenable it afterward.

The above also highlights my lie in the first paragraph: if you like watching sprites of scenery roll past your train, this game could be for you, if it weren't for all the constant attention it demanded. I'm still 'playing' it but I know at some point I'm going to uninstall it and never remember it exists again.

This is an in-depth review and analysis about everything I found while playing Tiny Rails for Steam.

Glitches/Inconsistencies/Problems
1). The entire gumball machine concept is flawed. Before it was changed backed to its original state when Tiny Rails first came out, the gumball machine seemed fairly fun. What's the point of a gumball machine if you're only getting something from a list of 4 or 5 things? Shouldn't there be more randomness and less restrictiveness? There is no message or anything that says 'max level', or anything along those lines. You shouldn't have reverted the gumball machine back to its original state when the game first came out. This also leads to the fact you cannot obtain duplicates of the same car on the Steam version, which I find ridiculous. It just limits the players creativity and use of their resources.
2). I have found glitches both visual and functional in many parts of the game, including but not limited to: the job board, the map, the story line, the stations, and the regional checklists. Sometimes when I play for extended amounts of time the text of the money actually grows, which is odd.
3). There are many little things that just feel overlooked and rushed and lazy. This whole port of Tiny Rails to Steam feels like a lazy way to make just an extra amount of money. Here's some nitpicking things I want to mention that would be listed under quality of life improvements. Have the job completion visually notify the player when only one job is completed. Fix the final vault upgrade for the train as it does nothing and is a waste of 290,000 coins to those who are unknown to this problem. Fix the times of train cars that produce money; some of them say 33:00 or 36:00 (What time is that??) Align the Steam achievements and the in game achievements entirely. Do not have the bottom user interface disappear when using auto depart.

Balance Fixes
1) The auto depart feature should just be instant and should also happen in the background of the game when you're in the job menu or map or any other interface outside of looking directly at the train.
2) More difficult to attain achievements should reward the player with higher amount of money. Additionally, the jobs where you have to travel a certain distant should be exponential in their rewards or at least more to entice the player to choose them. Why would I pick travel 3,107 miles for 5,000 coins when I can just refresh the job board for 100 coins and get travel 621 miles for 5,000 coins? It just isn't balanced.
3) Oddly enough, Asia East seems incredibly difficult compared to other checklists in the game. In Asia East you have to buy or upgrade 20 stations. There are only 13 stations and they all are at least 50,000 coins. After that, you have to upgrade them for 500,000 coins. That is just way too big of a jump. You would need a total of 4,150,000 coins to fully complete Asia East. Compared to other, later checklists this is absurd. It takes such a fractionally smaller amount of money to complete all of Oceania in terms of stations when compared to Asia East. What kind of progression is that? My suggestions would be to add more, less populated towns (which there are plenty of) or reduce the number of stations you have to buy or upgrade to say 15 instead of 20.
4) I never got why engines and cabooses never informed the player about their perks when compared to other cars. The others cars accomplish this feat fine but the engines and cabooses not so much. Additionally, I feel as though the entire organization of the cars, engines, and cabooses is flawed. There should be at least some organizations a little I mean come on. You did the bare minimum in terms of organizing trains with a simple and ineffective page scrolling mechanism.
5) I don't see how the cleaning and repairing aspect of the game adds anything to the overall joy of the player. It just seems unnecessary and annoying. Never once have I thought about why this would be needed in this game.

Suggestions
1) I would recommend adding a global leader board to see who has the most money, most distance traveled, etc. Also adding a friend board would certainly increase player activity and sales.
2) Overhaul the entire organization system of engines, cabooses, and train cars. All of it needs fixing. Add a way for players to create train layouts and preset train for either cargo, passengers, or a mix of the two.
3) Add a timer between destination to destination.
4) Add an easier way to collect money when you have a really long train and have to go all the way to the back to collect money.
5) Add a feature where you can leave the game with no destination and collect money from passengers while away. While this is already in the game, it is not an integrated, feature. There is no button or guarantee that you are going to be left with a caboose full of coins when you come back. Sometimes I have left the game and it has me arriving the same place I way heading towards when I left the first time.
6) When a player hovers over a piece of cargo, they should be informed of what the piece of cargo is. Some newer players might be unfamiliar with types of cargo they need.
7) Add an option for AM and PM times. It is just way easier to read than military time for me personally and probably many others.
8) I don't understand why you feel the need the abbreviate every state and country. It just creates confusion and ambiguity between place to place. There 26 countries that begin with S, do you really think you can simplify all of those countries into two letter abbreviations and make it legible? It would also help newer players who are unfamiliar with geography to learn places as well. o
9) Implement a way for players to upload their lengthy journeys to the cloud so they don't lose them. Many of the negative reviews are because players have lost their long games to randomness.
10) Include mechanical changes in the patch notes. I know it might seem like no will care, but I care. Your patch notes are just so bare minimum. If you change a mechanic, even insignificant, put it in the patch notes. I know you like to keep your players uninformed about balance changes and only like to tell them what they want to hear and what is added to game.

Overall, the steam version of Tiny Rails feels significantly neglected and inferior to the mobile version. This is a mobile game, not a steam game, apparently. The developers are too lazy to do the most basic of quality of life improvements which is honestly quite sad because I really enjoy the art and the overall concept of the game. The execution just feels poor which is really unfortunate. A huge quality of life update needs to be in order to make this game more playable in my opinion, because the game is clearly very dead. Maybe add a leader board or a friend board and connect with others while playing the game, that would boost sales I bet. What you've got here is a really good structure for a game that has a lot of potential. Listen to the feedback and build strong pillars in the community and game. Advertise, tweak, test, make anything possible to improve the state of this game. This feels like the skeleton of a really good game, a beta test at that. There just features though that I feel would improve this game so much and tweaks that would make it smoother. Overall though I like this game and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't care as much as I do. Thanks for reading all of this and if you didn't you should, if you care that is. And to Tiny Titan Studios, I know you are never going to read this because you're a relatively small game company and you probably don't care that much, but if you do, please fix and improve your game at least somewhat. Thanks. :)

I LOVE THIS GAME!! 5 STARSI recommend this game for anyone who just wants to chill and play an indie game. The glow effects and the motion blur look very good. The music just makes you do not wanna leave.

My game progress keeps being deleted. Steam has not helped and I am contacting Tiny Titans Studio. If I have to keep restarting the game, I am going to delete it. I love playing it but not over and over and over and over and over. I was so happy to play the Steam version since the mobile version has turned to garbage... but I hate that I lose so much progress and did literally nothing to cause it.

im obsessed with this game. i want to see more like this from this developer. outstanding. there is a lot of depth in this game. i just wish there'd be a little more content added. id buy dlc for this. it'd be nice to be able to buy more trains to manage and have a company.

This game is great but unfortunately the sound stops working after about 5-6 minutes. I am a mac user, and I hope this problem can be fixed in the near future.

Mini_Squatch
Mini_Squatch

Its really just a port of a mobile game, its buggy and doesn't see any updates. Its pretty cute, if not repetitive and boring. There's no real point to any of it. You gather funds and resources to build additional warehouses or whatever, which you just use to store more materials. Its fun for a little while, and then plateaus.

Nexeques

Good mobile port. No Microtransactions for Steam version, which is why it has a price. Get it on sale!

LOTS of content for the price. Cute graphics. Easy economy/collecting goods gameplay. Semi-idle.

(Other reviews say it's bugged - I'm beyond that point of the game so might not experience the bug?)

I love this game its so quiet and peaceful the pixel art is so amazing I have been playing it and seems to be hard to put down if I could I would rate it a 9/10. I keep noticing a few minor glitches but the time it takes without an upgraded engine is long. WOULD SUGGEST YOU BUY!

DickInMyAss4
DickInMyAss4

The game on mobile is just a heap of microtransactions and paywalls like every mobile game, but PC is a different story. First of all there is no currency that you have to buy. You have to earn all of it. Second the game doesn't lock anything behind a paywall you either earn everything or you get nothing.

What a great and relaxing addictive game. Used to play in IOs but althought free you had to put a lot of real money into it. Now this version cost me about US 4 but you dont (and you cant) add any money. All you conquer is in the game! There are literally hundreds of stations around the world (they open as you progress) and I am improving my geography as I go :). Lots of trains and missions to do. Enjoy!

I discovered this game on the Google Play Store on my phone, so you imagine my excitement when I found out it was on Steam. When I first downloaded it Tiny Titan Studios seemed to have forgotten it after a month or two. About 7 months later after I had uninstalled it and gave it a bad review that Tiny Titan eventually updated the game with several new features and bug fixes. They have kept the game up to date since then and I have since changed my opinion.

And now, a shameless plug:

September 2020 update:
Having played the game quite a bit since my last review update I can safely say that it is in a much better state now. Tiny Rails is certainly worth playing for the simple fact that it is a very relaxing semi-idle game. There are lots of options when building/developing your train and quite a large world to unlock.

My only criticisms remaining are:
1. Upgrading cabs doesn't really offer much of an increase, generally speaking. One stat might go up a tiny bit but for the most part upgrades are mostly cosmetic.
2. Engines and cabooses do not have upgrades nor do they have much statistical differentiation.
3. The buying/selling of goods is pretty lackluster and boring. It is a shame this is not somewhat automated and instead you end up spending tons of time shuffling resources in and out of your depots to make room for what you need. It would be nice if the depot max capacity was significantly increased and the buying/selling of goods could be automated (auto purchase specific goods and auto sell them at either X profit or cities that need them for their goal).
4. The inventory screen that houses all of your unlocked cabs/engines/cabooses is incredibly cumbersome. Especially when you have like 20 pages of cabs to go through. I've accidentally equipped/unequipped cabs multiple times just trying to navigate this system.
5. Scrolling some of the windows is really janky (the jobs window, for example). Sometimes the bottom job will not scroll up high enough to be viewed (scrolls up then bounces back down automatically) unless I manually move the scroll bar with my mouse. Mouse wheel seems to cause this issue.

Other than that this has become a pretty decent game. I will be leaving my previous updates and comments about the game up but wholeheartedly recommend the title now based on the current state of the game. I hope the devs continue to update Tiny Rails with bug fixes and extra content.

*BELOW THIS POINT IS NOW OUTDATED*
August 18, 2020 Disclaimer:
This review was posted before the developer applied any updates after April 16, 2020. I have not tested the game since April but the updates page for this game show multiple updates since then, some of which are specifically addressing issues raised in this review.

I am changing my recommendation status to Yes based on the developer updating the game multiple times since I made the original review. I have not tested the game since April to see how the updates have affected anything, however, so this recommendation is based on the update notes and not actual experience with the most current version. I will change the review once I have tested the current version.

**OUTDATED REVIEW**
Tiny Rails is a pretty fun little game. It worked on mobile to help kill time and it worked on PC as a more cohesive semi-idle experience.

The PC version doesn't have micro transactions, which plague the mobile version. Unfortunately this version is basically abandonware as the last update was around a year ago while the mobile version continues to see regular updates (last update was March 26, 2020).

I absolutely cannot recommend getting the steam version of this game, as abandonware.

Is it functional? Yes
Is it fun? For a semi-idle game, yes
Is it worth buying considering it has not seen content updates in roughly a year even though the mobile port was updated less than a month ago? No way

My biggest gripe with the game, aside from the lack of updates to the PC port, is that it functions really well as an observation experience (just watching your little train travel the world) but the delivering of goods and trying to manage trade pulls away from the observational beauty and forces you do do stuff that really does feel like a chore.

If the PC version received regular updates to stay more in line with the mobile version I would recommend this but as it stands there is too big a content gap between versions for me to get behind this port.

Game doesn't let me change language.

I could play in portuguese (since the game doesn't let me choose english) if it was readable.
They translated using the worst version of Altavista, from 1998. Its barely comprehensible.

Is it too hard to let me choose the language I want?

After a lack of content and updates/patches over the last few years I am delighted that the PC version of Tiny Rails is getting some much needed love again! While there are still some bugs and inconsistencies that need to be ironed out, the devs have been working on collecting feedback and bug reports and fixing them ASAP.
This game is one of my favorite "second screen occupiers" to play while grinding away in MMORPGs or watching Twitch/Youtube and still is a pleasure to look at. The locomotives and cars ranging from fairly accurate depictions of real trains to very creative designs such as theme park cars, aquarium cars and many more are a pleasure to look at. Between making a "real train" and a completely fantastical construct of weird cars you can mix and match however you like from what you are given by the gumbball machine.
The Pixel Art for trains and environment alike looks very nice and contributes to making this game feel very cute and loveable.

It nice and casual, with no time pressure reasonable progress that isn't grinding
although one complaint is that if you want a specific carriage late game and you have dozens of them its a bit clunky, an easy way to remedy this a way to narrow it down so you don't have to look though a dozen pages to find it

If you like the idea of a calming train game, watching your train slowly go from station to station but don't want to spend a fortune on one of the train simulators, then give this a go.

It's nice to have my train up and running on my second monitor as I do other things on my main monitor.

I highly recommend never upgrading your train speed. I started my game over because my train was going way to fast to be visually enjoyable. Scenery becomes a dizzying blur before too long. Kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion. Keep it slow and relaxing.

Lucian
Lucian

Not sure if I can really reccomend this. Even though it doesn't have in-game purchases, the game still feels like a mobile game with lots of random (you can't get the vagon you need without spending lots of time in a slot machine minigame).
Saying that, the game IS quite relaxing. The art is good, and mechanick is simple. If you just wanna kill some time, its pretty good.

CASysprog
CASysprog

Having played more than 2,000 hours I can safely say I like this game.

It is a calming, easy to play game with a nice story, and a gentle easy to follow game mechanic.
Explore areas, pick up and deliver cargo, upgrade stations, explore new areas, meet simple goals, and generally have a relaxing time. There are 230+ cars to put on the train with a variety of different and interesting designs.

You can easily run and play this game whilst doing something else, (reading a book, watch TV etc).

So all in all, a fun, relaxing casual game that is worth your time.
Note: It is different from the mobile version, there are no micro transactions here, so it doesn't have the same feel that the mobile version uses.
Note 2: The developers recently came back and patched the game, fixed a lot of the bugs and little quirks. They also update the game with new cars and add improvements frequently.

If you want to see the game in action there is a 135 episode playlist on my Youtube channel - here is episode 1.

I used to love this game when a friend used to let me play, but they cut out so much and added so many microtransactions to the mobile version, this game went from nice and fun to just money-grabbing laziness. this was originally going to be a positive review. but i don't support money hungry devs.

kristopherpie
kristopherpie

This Game is exactly what i was looking for when i wanted a relaxing train game. It allows me to interact when i want to and lets me take my time to get things done not forcing you to rush things. I just wish the developers would add back all the mobile micro transaction content as an extra paid DLC instead of just removing it from the game. That missing content caused me some confusion because the cars you get for the train refer to trains you cant get in this version.

kartenhouse
kartenhouse

Let's start with what I like:

The fact that there are no microtransactions and ads anymore is great and the addition of cleaning and maintenance is welcome because it adds more stuff to do in the game. The removal of waiting times is also fun because it speeds the game up a lot compared to mobile.

Now on to what I didn't like:
The game is very buggy (still). Here's a list of bugs I found within only one hour of gameplay:
- Various graphics bugs:
-- Sometimes background elements like bushes jump between layers causing annoying flickering.
-- When the train is travelling there are interlacing issues.
-- Sometimes the money count on the top left corner doesn't update when you're collecting money from entertainment/food cars.
- Gameplay stuff:
-- Service fees are also paid on an hourly basis when the train is in the station. Time should be paused/service fees shouldn't trigger. This way you have to rush through dialogues and market transactions in order not to lose money.
-- No info for trains and cabooses is shown in train edit mode. Figuring out what combination is best becomes trial and error.

Having played only that shortly, I have to say that it is a fun game and that I'd love to play more, but it's just too buggy for me (and considering my playtime, chances are there are more bugs where those came from). Weren't the game as buggy as it is in its current state I'd recommend it.

Also, an improvement I'd wish for: I really appreciated the fact that you could buy specific cars in the shop—this could also be integrated here, using coins instead of diamonds/real money.

Lunar Neko Kitten
Lunar Neko Kitten

This game is a great way to just waste some time and be mildly entertained. It's simplicity is part of the charm and it has a bit of a Stardew Valley meets Unpacking kind of feel to it. The concept is easy, the instructions are even easier, and you'll find yourself sucked into it after playing for a little bit.

Jayvees
Jayvees

Tiny Rails is a fun game to play. Compare to the mobile version, this game is better in terms of time management but mobile have gone too far. Also, finding money is more difficult which makes this game play better than the mobile version. The upgrade here is instantaneous which is worth your time. And also, you should take care of your train by repairing and cleaning it. Therefore, this game is fascinating to play seeing the trains running City to city and even exploring the world.

Tenarus
Tenarus

The game seems to be severely bugged. First it says, you have to claim your coins, but if you claim them you dont get them - stations just reward a random ammount of coins. In between sessions the game has severe rollbacks...

All in all: Better play the f2p mobile variant. This game is not worth 9 bucks. It's not even worth 99cents in it's current state. I loved the game on mobile, but this version of the game is just garbage.

Shade Aurion
Shade Aurion

I played this on mobile for a long while before I made the jump to PC and i'll be real with you here. There are a few issues, namely that there is no Vsync and there really needs to be. Lovely pixel art gets torn to shreds by screen tearing. Secondly, the money grind in this *paid* version is ridiculous. You'd watch ads on the mobile version and rack up money like crazy. In this you do tasks and wait a LOT longer that 30 seconds for vastly less money. This is impacted by the increasing costs for rolling on the gacha and increasing upgrade costs. I feel like this could be easily mitigated by changing the task rewards. $5k for 1000km, $15k for 2500km and $35k for 5000km. The different tasks are already there but they reward the same money value. This game needs a balancing and video patch pretty badly. Aside from that..

Tiny Rails is a lovely little pixel art train game and it is meant to be played long term. It's easier to jump on for a minute or two on phones so hopefully the developer chooses to add some fixes because if properly balanced in this paid PC version, I think it'd stand the test of time for sure. If you can handle the grind i'd recommend it, otherwise not. If a patch later addresses this, then i'd just recommend it in general

Great casual game for people that love trains.

Pros:
- Easy to play, cute story to entertain you along the way.
- Lots of trains to collect common to rare to event only.
- Frequent special events over the weekends.
Cons:
- Can be a bit of a grind to upgrade stations, cars and general advancement of the story.

Overall I would recommend, its a great casual game, the art work is perfect for the theme, game is constantly updated and its easy to pick up right where you left off, even making some profits while you are away.

It would be good if it wasn't so glitchy. For a while the game kept crashing and that forced me to start over. Now during weekend events, I suddenly lose all of my progress and can't proceed to get more special engines and cars. I'm tired of having to start over because of lousy programming.

Darkstone2334

It was fun at first, but the $10 price tag isn't worth it considering the mobile game version is free. I just like playing on my computer more than my phone as I always misclick stuff with my big fingers.

Things about this I don't like:
You can't buy more train cars once you've got them unlocked.
You can't craft more than one car per factory.
Gumball usage skyrockets to an unaffordable rate by the time you leave Canada.
The textures are highly glitchy with the background scenery and buildings constantly fading in and out of existence.

Very well thought out little game. You can play it very simply, buy cargo on sale at one town, sell at the next, watch your train chug along the tracks. Or you can upgrade cars, build stations, plan routes, attend events, and optimize your train. Plays well, plot gets a little boring after a while, but worth my money.

Tiny Rails is super fun! I originally found the mobile game looking for something casual to play that was still interesting. I immediately got addicted and invested in the full game through steam which is even better! It's simple to learn the mechanics and it's fast-paced so you don't get bored. There are lots of different quests and objectives, so even though the story-based aspect is charming, you can really play in whatever way you want to. I quite literally can't stop playing. 10/10

Ilove this game. Maybe you can do tiny rails 2: across multi-verse

This is quite a fun and relaxing game but there are a few suggestions I have that would improve the game.

- There are some scenery layering problems, causing some objects to flash.

- What was supposed to be a dust cloud behind the engine car in desert areas looks like a weird brown rectangle

- The thing I'd most want to see improve is the inaccurate distance between far northern/southern cities. The map distortion is not taken into account when calculating distances between stations, so when you get to Alaska the distances are 2 to 3 times longer than what they should be, making for a really tedious trip in some places. As a geography nerd and generally impatient person, this really gets on my nerves!

Thanks to Tiny Titan if you read this. I would really like to see more improvements to this game! :)

Despite it looks like an idle game, it isn't a game designed for gamer. It is a game designed for players who can offer attention to check the screen (or mobile) from time to time. Why? Cargo system.

There are only 2 ways to manage the train:
- Manual Depart. Need to manually approve EVERY stop if nothing worth buying.
- Auto Depart. Once you entered the station, you CANNOT make other decision except Market. You MUST pay attention when there is a sound, because you cannot make a U-turn unless on next Station.

Cargo system becomes much more important when Africa is unlocked. Many stations require same set of materials in order to rebuild, which is also crucial to region progression. Cargo system also counts towards region completion. Due to certain stations have small warehouses, certain materials become a joke to hoard.

Example, Lumber, Wood Window. Arguing on spending 2 hours is sufficient to hoard enough is false, because the demand will extend to many other regions. The game itself don't have a good sense of balancing. In fact, many other features are broken and unrewarding.

- AFK bonus only works when you switch to 2nd profile and turn off the game.
- Job Points are ridiculously hard to grind.
- Only mobile version gets updated, so in this version, many things feel awkward.
- UI system and graphics frequently glitch out.
- Landmark system don't slow down at key areas, resulting lame photos.
- Gacha system is too RNG, and cars inventory are "mobile-friendly".

If you want play an idle game, I suggest Idleon.
If you want play train management game, I suggest Mini Metro.
If you want manage train cargo, I don't know any other game. But even with "Alt-Tabbing", the experience with Tiny Rails just not worth the time.

Ok, so first things first, I'm refunding this game. Then, why is my review positive? Well, because the game is great! I'm only refunding it because I don't really see myself playing it for a very long time, as it can get pretty boring. I played it for a while on my phone though, and I can say many positive things about this game.
Overall, a solid 7/10. It would be 9/10 if the game was cheaper but it isn't really worth its price.
