TLDR:

Very fun, absolutely worth the price

Gameplay:

The core gameplay for Tinyfolks offers several choices to vary each playthrough, from customizing your folks (training, upgrades, etc.) to exploring different towns on your path to victory!

Resource management is an important factor for the early game. Time constraints (the passing of in-game days) encourage efficiency. For players who challenge themselves to finish a playthrough as quickly as possible, the game provides sufficient obstacles, while players who aim for completion also have the option of exploring every town.

Battle is both relaxing and stressful! As turn-based games tend to go, there is no rush to take an action, meaning you will have plenty of time to plan out each move to your heart's content. The enemies' attacks can be predicted, but there is an amount of randomness that may result in death if you're not careful! You'll have the option to flee during any battle that is not a boss fight if you find that you are not prepared to clear the town. Keep in mind that battles may be different when you return!

Improvements:

There are a few UI bugs currently, but the dev is aware of them and seems to be in the process of correcting them. Even still, simply closing and reopening the game corrects any issues. Further, this does not hinder your progress, as the game saves after every action!

The game could use a few "quality of life" improvements, including showing the targets for an ability in the training window and showing the abilities of folks (maybe by hovering?) on the team selection screen.

For the current price of the game, there is plenty of content, though I would love to see more!

This is a fun game to beat and has a lot of replay value with challenges afterwards. This game is a steal at $4

Very fun turnbased roguelike with a boppin soundtrack that is great for playing in long periods of downtime to just idly play turns between bites of pizza

leobongo

dont write these often but honestly if your thinking of getting it and like turn based fighting get it. thats all its cheap and a good turn based game where you want to try out all the classes so youll get your time out of it so buy it and nothing to regret.

It's just, its so much fun!

- First play through I was enthralled by the idea of combining the class training to see what cool new Folks I'd get.
- Then I was just having fun beating the game. Simple rpg combat. "Like Darkest Dungeon on Gameboy"
- Then I wanted to dig into it more, and played Wizard mode, then Zombie mode.

Play this game if you like simple rpgs and rogue-likes.

Easily worth price of admission.

It's a cute little roguelike with lots of unlockables and a great soundtrack for $4. What's not to like?

A fun game, for $3 you'll easily get your money's worth.
Some classes are very strong and some are extremely useless and could use some balancing. The 1st run is a bit tough as you're understanding the mechanics but immediately gets much easier after that once you understand what you need to do.

The music is a BOP though, very catchy!

Fun little game to spend a few hours. Little hint: training doesn't make a folk stronger, just different :)

art is cute, music is nice. but the class balance is all over the place, where a solid 2/3rd of the cast is pretty useless.
solid 5/10.

I loved this little game. Reminded me of many different games I played in the past. I played it for over 20 hours before I got bored, which was a great value.

Recommend if you like simple strategy, unit upgrading, and squad composition.

yoyo4thdimention
yoyo4thdimention

Turn based RPG with just the right amount of everything to feel classic and also like nothing you've played before.

One gripe: I wish the flow of the menus in town was a little more streamlined.

It's a good game.

This game sat in my wishlist for far too long. For only £3, I was able to enjoy a deeply engaging RPG experience which, like the best RPGs, could be tailored to my preferred style of play. I completed the campaign in only a couple of hours, but the number of encounters, classes, and challenges left unexplored allows me the chance to jump back in. It's probably possible to achieve 100% completion in 1 or 2 playthroughs, but even for a one-off experience, the small price tag and addictive gameplay was easily worth it.

What a gem. Just a fantastic example of great balancing and game design. I beat it on normal on the first try after watching my friend play it, but it still gave me tons of interesting choices. I never felt punished for not taking an optimal upgrade route, nor did I feel overpowered by the end after grinding up my town/party. I feel like there are tons of interesting combinations that could win. The value comes from discovering how the different classes support each other, which makes this worth replaying. Beating the game unlocks new modes, so if you're into challenge runs after "figuring it out" then this is a solid choice.

A few minor complaints: Some upgrades are basically useless after the early game is over. Taking certain upgrades early will benefit you, but you don't know what those are until you try them leading to upgrading out of "order." This isn't a big issue since the game is still perfectly beatable, but for min/maxers this may be a disappointment until the second run. Some bosses are really cool, but others kinda fell flat. Some classes are really cool while others feel conspicuously underpowered.

It's a great value at the price, so quit listening to me and try it out.

Great game!
You will need a develop a strategy to win in descent difficulty levels.
It also got great music or some nice atmosphere.

SassyKitKats
SassyKitKats

What a fantastic throwback to old gameboy days! Even with simple graphical execution, the game is a decent little tactical game. I can see why people compare it a bit to Darkest Dungeon- except its just cuter and more chill. You make your party, go out to a zone, kill the things in quick short battles.. rinse and repeat.. Build up your town and unlock more classes and training.. all while racing against the clock. Its easier than it sounds as this little game delivers itself within about 3 hours of playtime.

However it offers even more difficulty modes and challenges to keep replay value up for a bit! If you like tactical games but don't have as much time to always sink into them- this is a great catch of a game. I adore it and I'm so glad I decided not to pass it up. I ignored it for a bit.. then I finally looked into it and love the premise and that 8bit music! Very much knocked it out of the park, well done!

MrEntity

The game is reasonably solid. There's nothing in particular about it that's bad. That being said, you're going to basically be paying 1$/hour of play. The game is priced correctly.
I easily beat the game on my first play in less than 5 hours, and I genuinely have no interest in playing it further. It was good for the first-play, but I really don't see a lot of strategic or tactical diversity in the game. There might be replay value, but it's going to be pretty minor.
Buy it for a few hours of fun. Don't expect anything more. That being said, the quality of those few hours is weirdly high.

Vigilante
Vigilante

I really like it.

Recommend hard mode+, as I beat it first try on normal.

Incredible amount of customizability with characters, however, not enough items.

This game could extraordinarily benefit from expansions, and I hope dev chooses to make some.

TrueWOPR
TrueWOPR

Well this is surprisingly fantastic.
I was expecting a simple JRPG styled game with low specs that could run on the chromebook - instead I have a perma-death citizen management and city building RPG where I have 45 days (turns) to take back your kingdom/ All by training peasants by sending them to one of 6 trainers, and you can train them twice - all in all there's 36 classes in the game (21 will be your 'max level training' ones) leading to a wide array of mixing and matching. Consider too that your people need to rest between fights and you'll be juggling quite a bit.

Very much my kind of game, and for $4 (I got it on sale for $3) it's an easy recommend.
The game tells most of what it will be within the first hour, so if it doesn't click with you, you're more than safe to refund too. none of that "it gets good 10 hours in" nonsense.

This is literally the most video game-video game I've ever seen, It's literally what comes to mind when most people think of a video game.

And it's also really good, I enjoyed my playthroughs a lot and had plenty of fun while playing this game, I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking some fun!

Nice game, can't wait for part two (hopefully). Really enjoyed going through the progress of upgrading the town and the adventurers gear. You can play this game really fast once you go through it the first time, it get's really fun even on hard modes. Newer thought I would finish the game with a sword attack of 9 on a knight, because all of my other stronger party characters were resting in the inn and the days were running out, so I had to act - and boy was it fun.

Get this while it's hot, you won't regret it. I event got the soundtrack which was a nice addition to the game in the store.

really really love this game. it's good fun for a short while, complex but not overwhelming, and clearly made with a lot of love. design is very basic (but stylish!) pixel art, and a great soundtrack that really adds to the game. if you've played darkest dungeion, this is very similar but less complex and frustrating (imo). has that nostalgia factor that i personally like in rpg games

Fun for a couple hours. Interesting class system being able to combine the classes together to make new ones. Even able to turn your king into a mega barbarian or a sorcerer supreme.

I thought Tinyfolks was an amazing game! Here's what I can tell you about it (minimal spoilers):

-The framework of the game is much like Darkest Dungeon, but in a more compact experience. Which I loved! It's easier than DD, but not completely simple. You'll have to plan ahead and take parties that work well together.
-It took me around 6.5 hours to beat the game, completing all the upgrades and available levels. That's more than 2 hours of fun per $1, not even counting replayability.
-I think this game has decent replayability! There's no way I saw all role combinations in one play through. I'll probably play another run soon and try for the harder achievements!

Useful tips:
-Every peasant unit can be trained twice. "Already trained" units that you recruit can be trained once more. There are several combinations for each type of unit, and I didn't see them all. Very fun RPG element!
-Death of a unit is permanent. Take a healer.
-Upgrading buildings leads to more upgrade options, +1 population limit, and even some permanent benefits for your whole team.
-You have 45 days to overcome the dark boss. If not, game over. It's plenty of time, but make sure you plan the end game well. You can play some levels two or three times for loot.

That's all I have. Fantastic game overall, good music, high "one more level" energy.
I highly recommend Tinyfolks: 9/10

Not played a game like this in a long time so took me a while to complete it. I enjoyed completing it so much the first time that I am working my way through the challenges. The game mechanics are perfect and it is hugely satisfying when you have a perfect run against the last boss. The nice thing is that you can beat him using a variety of different characters. Music and graphics are great. Reminds me of games on the old ZX Spectrum.

Honestly this game was exactly what I was looking for. I love the pixel art and the over all flow of the game. Planning out adventures and what cast of folk would come along with me was fun and fresh. There is only one downside in my opinion, while yes every area will have randomly generated encounters, those encounters don't very too much that I can just keep playing the game back to back without feeling slightly repetitive(once beaten that is). I still love everything else about this game and it was !00% worth the few bucks. I can't wait to see any new future content or games from this developer.

Dear fellas!
This game is a beatiful peace of work! It's just lovely in every aspect: artstyle, gameplay and soundscape/track.
No question it's a thumbs up and I'm really glad this gem is available for such a fair prize

Short and sweet. Get it if you're fine with that!

Reminds me of Darkest Dungeon's party management but there's a time limit on your prep for the final dungeon. Finished in about 3 and a half hours.

Simple mechanics and gameplay loop of upgrading units after a mini-gauntlet of turn-based combats. Cute retro graphics and music.

I didn't try the higher difficulty and challenges yet but I can't imagine it being unmanageable.

tonyg100
tonyg100

You put together a party of classes for dungeon runs, The classes each have 4 skills that they can use in a fight. 2 of which consume "power" that limits them to 2-5 uses per run. The other two are usually split between a basic attack and a weak special move.

This might have played well in the 80's when we were content to have a black mage spend 98% of it's time attacking with a wimpy dagger for the chance to cast a fire spell against a main boss, but games have evolved and most have learned how to balance in cool powers and strategy with other restrictions like cooldowns, etc.

Maybe this changes later in the game but an hour of it was enough for me.

It felt like this was going to be a more accessible version of Darkest Dungeon but the combat quickly grew stale because of these limitations. The dungeon runs are very short - a plus esp. in light of said restrictions - but I just need turn based combat to have a little more spice.

I like the graphics and style - mostly liked the UI too, although targeting is a touch clumsy.

this game feels incomplete: the English is poor, when you are choosing your king/queen's name and you backspace it displays as nothing, and probably even more that I do not wish to find for a game that should be free.

A cute, quick game that is incredibly addicting. Yeah it has some balancing issues, but it doesn't tank the experience. It's a casual game with old school style turn-based combat. A lite mashup of early Final Fantasy games and Darkest Dungeons.

All in all, a good game to chill out to or just kill time. Worth the price.

Wonderful little game but way too simplistic in strategy.
Played three runs in 4 hours
First run I beat regular mode
Second Run I beat hard mode with a normal modifier
Third run I one shot hardest mode with folk mode on

I wont spoil the strategy for new players but 4 hours in and I'm unlikely to ever return to the game. For $5 well worth it but it would take an afternoon of balancing the game out to offer a lot more replayability.

Very fun game. About 2 hours for a "i killed everything and have taken my time" first run.
I have not really seen any useless characters and upgrading the ones you have using cross classes and especially armor upgrades on Wizards is making any Folk viable.
Its cute, its short, its cheap and it was certainly a blast to play.

Orthodontist

Honestly, I saw this game on one of Many a True Nerd's let's play vids and it was exactly what I was looking for. A chill and satisfying short experience with rogue like elements, a sweet retro'esque art style and vibe. The music was oh soooo sweet, and the mechanics were just engaging enough to keep me glued to my chair during the 5.5 hours it took to beat the game on normal.

If you'd had a rough day, week and just want to sit back and enjoy a short experience I would recommend this game. It's more than worth the $3.99 I payed for it.

If anything is ever added to this game in the future, I'll be back.

JellyKid
JellyKid

Solid tactical turn-based RPG at a great price. Best $4 I've spend all year.

The good:
* Predictable numbers -- no critical hits, no chance to miss
* Good variety of unit combinations to make and enemies to fight
* Decent sound track and SFX for an small game
* Well done pixel animations

The bad:
* Some interactions feel buggy i.e. you can't stack dots and
* Using a skill that does damage and applies a burn (or other dot) to an enemy that is immune to burn also prevents the base damage for some reason
* Lots of skills you essentially never use
* Some classes feel useless
* Straight buffs and debuffs are underpowered most of the time and especially with bosses that take multiple turns and clear the debuff before you get to act again
* Not a lot of decision making based around what the enemies are going to do. Instead, the decisions are typically: how quickly can I kill something or kill order -- I'd like to see more telegraphs of scary enemy skills that I need to stun or move them out of position or something other than just hit them harder than they hit me

Other:
* Difficulty feels about right on Hard (dungeons feel to short on easier difficulties)
* Not a ton of re-playability (which is fine for a $4 game)

OnTheBus
OnTheBus

Great little game that kept me entertained the whole way through, I did beat it my second try but I was not able to clear all of the missions. I hope that Pierre makes a nice chunk of cash from this one as there is definitely potential here for expansions or a sequel. It is a very simple looking game but it runs like a dream on my tablet PC and can be played passively so its a great way to kill time at work.

Beat the game on Normal on my literal first attempt. Felt the game was pretty easy, especially if you take your time to level up everyone's gear. Lost 1 character the whole run. At least I have different game modes and challenges to attempt, but wish there was more.

Really fun little game. A lot of depth, but very short! Beat it in 2 hours in normal mode.
Seems like there's so much potential for this game to be longer, have more levels and goals, but for $3.99 it's a steal regardless. If there were more enemies and levels this could've easily been extended to make a much more in depth game but for the price it's great.

i don't often write reviews, however this is such a fun little game I felt I had to. This is essentially an 8bit Darkest Dungeon roguelite. It's quite short, I've finished it twice in 5 hours, however it is a lot of fun and for three quid you can't really ask for more.

Here's a game that's $4, has a bunch of content, charm, and gets frequent updates by the developer who responded to a question I had in discord in an hour.

TinyFolks is a city builder / tactical RPG. You recruit farmers, train them to be different classes, upgrade their weapons and go exploring to different biomes that feature tactical turn-based party combat. Beat monsters, bosses, get gold and items, and go upgrade your units and base.

Each run has different enemies, bosses, class combos to try. I'm excited to try some of the harder difficulties and fill out the codex.

Not to mention there are a lot of secrets to discover...

Also it runs fantastic on the Steam Deck. I advise for the codex to set your LB/RB to scroll wheel and enable turbo on them, otherwise it takes a long time to scroll through it.

I'm amazed by this game. For something that is so simple and what appears to be basic the game just grabs you and makes you play just one more dungeon. The fact it does so much with such basic graphics again amazes me. The systems are straight forward but still have enough depth that you can sink your teeth in too. With the addition of the training you king/queen adds so much more flavor to you party. I can not wait to see what comes out next. Though even if nothing comes out its worth every penny now.

A simply WONDERFUL roguelike party builder in the same vein as Darkest Dungeon.

My first run on normal, I got overconfident and went into a harder zone without enough preparation, got wiped out, and rage-quit.

Managed to win my 2nd run on Normal after I was a bit more familiar with what the buildings did, and what party composition I liked the most.

I'm really looking forward to the harder modes and challenge runs. The game feels great to play, you have a LOT of different things to spend your resources on and build your party with, and the music is bumpin'.

Meanwhile
Meanwhile

It's a fantastic idea, and the first normal playthrough is fun, so maybe it's worth your four bucks. However, the class design and boss designs are terrible. There are quite a few classes that are absolute dead weight in any party, and there are some bosses with abilities that unnecessarily exacerbate that problem. There is even one boss that can create a stun-lock loop resulting in a never-ending battle where you cannot act at all. This was reported to the developer, who admitted it was a bug and claimed he was fixing it, but the bug still exists.

If the game were to undergo a massive class overhaul to shore up the worst classes and rebalance the bosses so they are a little stronger against the most obvious strategies and a little weaker against subtler ones, it would improve the experience of tackling the challenges and harder difficulties. I would love to be able to recommend Tinyfolks, but there are so many problems beneath the cute veneer, that right now I cannot.

A good game, plays like a simplified Darkest Dungeon. Be aware that you will probably get all of your enjoyment out of it within 2-3 hours. If the price is worth that amount of entertainment for you, then this is a good buy, but don't expect more than that.

Landschwimmer
Landschwimmer

Surprisingly addicting once you get the hang of things. For this price tag its more than worth it with its in depth strategies and replayability through different combinations of strategies, units and difficulty settings. I also like how the upgrades for the units are less straight up upgrades and more an expansion of repertiore.

decimator1337
decimator1337

This game manages to be more fun and inspired than a lot of higher-scope games out there (looking at YOU, Darkest Dungeon). The minimalist character style works very well, as it leaves much to the imagination, and while I would rather have more than 7 characters with which to name folks, in itself it could enforce a laconic, simple aesthetic for the story. Furthermore, the game's straightforward goal and (depending on difficulty) time-limits cut out Darkest Dungeon's main problem, which was artificial extension of the game through grind. One of its greatest and most innovative features is the class system, which ironically can make for deeper and more compelling characters than other games of the genre. It allows you to mix for excellent results, like Faith + Faith = Saint, or Faith + Shield = Templar, or nothing = Peasant, who is deceptively strong when upgraded. Now, it's imperative to say, this game doesn't deserve some of the bad reviews it's gotten. I learned of it through BaerTaffy's video, and was shocked to find it came out -what, TWELVE DAYS AGO? Yet it's already had a number of patches and boy oh buoy was it fun. Don't be fooled by the playtime on this review; I played a few hours, then broke for dinner for a couple of hours and had a theological argument with my family, then returned to finish the run, and that was my first. So that distraction aside and considering I used only a majority of the 45 days, most runs should be substantially shorter than 7 hours. Someone said that this game doesn't have any replay value. This is false, especially if you enjoy games where you can employ your imagination to make them story generators. To increase replay value, I'd suggest adding an "endless battle" level (like the windmill in Darkest Dungeon's Colour of Madness DLC) which draws enemies from all locales and backgrounds from all environments, so you never know quite what to expect. Maybe it's a rift on the top of a mountain, I dunno. It'd help with crunching that last chunk of iron, too. But enough of that - you didn't come to read my clinical description of the game, you came for me to spin you a glorious tale, demonstrating that using your imagination for a game like this is half the fun. If you don't use your imagination, the game will tend to be boring and clinically sterile as the pixels you see before you. Spirit is what gives things substance. Watch:

[NO IMAGINATION]
I started my first playthrough with metagaming intel from having watched footage of it beforehand. I party wiped 20 days or so into the campaign because of poor judgement and raged, and then went on to beat the final boss. Mkay, not bad for four quid.

[IMAGINATION ENGAGED]
In the afternoon yesterday, I was a King. I employed a Hero named Boreas to help me retake my crown after my rival for the Kingship of Shadow assaulted my kingdom. We slowly but surely became an elite force to be reckoned with, eventually being joined by several others, including a man named Stanley (some guy off the street), Boreas' noble friend Octavius, and Nico-my-cousin-is-here. Things were going hunky dory until myself and the other four went to the crystal fields, where after a long and terrible struggle, we were DEPRIVED OF LIFE. This was a shocking turn of events we'd never recover from, and the story was thenceforth turned into a roaring rampage of revenge. The only veteran survivor of this massacre was Oliver, who had not been there. He then turned into the Arrow (duh), and rallied the survivors to wreak great and terrible vengeance. A friend of Stanley's, a man as equally equanimous, placid, and unnotable as Stanley himself was driven to religious fanaticism by the death of his friend, and this man, Jim, became a saint. Enraged by my death, my servant Fritz and my second-in-command Felix took up arms alongside Arrow, the vengeful survivor, and none other than Zephyr, the brother of the late Boreas, joined them as they trained to avenge our deaths. But first they ended up in the wrong place entirely because they did not pay attention to where they were going (or perhaps they lacked their King's map-pointing skills), and in spite of their victory, our sorcerer Vlad (not a vampire) died there. A couple of weeks later, they returned to the evil prism that killed us and, being prepared, roflstomped it with extreme prejudice and hatred. From there, it was principally a matter of scrounging up enough iron to make gear even the Shadow couldn't laugh off. So thorough was their preparation, so steely their determination, and so vengeful their vengeance, that when they embarked, they wiped the floor with the eldritch usurper, and despite coming close, they did not suffer a single casualty. Felix, no doubt, would have to be the next King, with Fritz, Jim, and an important personage named Bahamonde (who did not participate in the final assault) forming his court, and Zephyr and Arrow being his champions. There seem, at any rate, to be two morals on the one way: the first, don't get dead (especially, of course, for kings). The other is harder to swallow: pick up and move on when bad things happen, don't cop out or try to undo the past. Without sacrifice, there can be no glory.

Fun little game. Combat like the first final fantasy, roster and town building like simplified darkest dungeon. Limited replayability (NG+ modes help) but plenty of play time for the price point. A few minor bugs, none game breaking or particularly frustrating. Overall, really nice little game. Easy to play blind, not very punitive, so don't worry about minmax.

The general premise of the game is alright, but every bit of information is hidden behind to many clicks. I'm pretty bad at remembering what specific skills the different classes have, but if I want to check their stats when making a party I have to leave the "make party screen" to check. The same problem occurs with artefacts. It would also be nice if you could see what skills a class has before you train them.

Overall I enjoyed the game, but I won't be achievement hunting or experimenting more until the initial cleanup patches are here.

Great game! fun and easy to understand.
Theres only a couple things missing tho
1. a way to get rid of people without killing them
2. more content (beat the game in 2.6 hours on normal)
3. a way retrain people (reroll abilities) so many people that you hire will just always have usless shit, only got a couple useable units.

darkest dungeon without all the interfering BS. its a much more fair system without crap that gets in the way. one thing to change right away is animation speed in options. when you get to your first boss battle they can attack every time you attack them, so you can waste alot of time going back and forth if you dont hit that option.
would be nice to be able to buy and sell resources, ended my first run with a couple thousand gold and wood. would have also been nice to upgrade armor and weapons at the same time, needing multiple days to get folk up to the level of the last one that was killed for training then upgrading all their kit can take over seven days which is just way too long.
overall an interesting if smaller experience. i unlocked something at the end of the run a challenge mode so maybe ill look at that.

A stripped down, bite-sized Darkest Dungeon. Tinyfolks is well designed, intuitive and a lot of fun, both in combat and when managing your folks and town. Quick to learn and straight to the point. There's some fun stuff to find as well like references to other games, what I think is a secret character class, and maybe more.

A playthrough should take 3-5 hours and there's replayability by way of trying different classes and tactics, a harder difficulty, achievements and several challenge modes. There are some balance issues and a few things could be made clearer, but nothing too major. Thoroughly recommended for anyone who's into turn-based tactics, especially if you're looking for something quick, light and affordable.

Fun short game, beat it in one sitting. I was worried about there not being much sense in replaying the game however, I still have many achievements to unlock and different character comps to try. It is also possible to beat the game without exploring all areas, as a result of this I still have one more unknown boss to beat for my second play through. Give it a try!

Honestly for $4 I expected a lot less. Although relatively short, it's a very well thought out game.
A shocking amount of variety in characters, but REALLY nicely streamlined. Took under 2 hours to get through the first play, but it was time well spent. I would love a longer version of this game, where maxing out your town/characters and seeing more depth to the exploration makes sense, but even if that never comes this is a Tiny game I won't forget!

After hours of selling steam trading cards (which is a huge highlight IMO) i opened up this game and had a great time. you have a day just chilling and don't feel like socializing, you smoked some weed and are gay high for the next 5 hours... play this game. far to often with games today you are given these tasks that take hundreds of real time hours and not every game is built to be beat in one day so when a game that can be beat in 2.6 hours (for me) comes across me i find it interesting. this game is like a really good song that last 10 seconds. I hope the developer stops making updates besides bug fixes. simplicity is where this games shines I already played some darkest dungeon so its nice to receive a similar format in such a raw and fast way. looking to see more releases from this developer. this game was so great in just one short play though it compelled me to write my first steam review after being on the platform for 10 years. give it a go!

Have a great day Gamers,

Absolutely the greatest pocket sized RPG I've ever played. I cannot recommend this game enough. The price is amazingly generous and for a few hours of fun the price is more than fair. I've spent more on movies and have been less entertained. I have honestly not seen mechanics like this in recent memory. The limited but free specialization progression is incredibly fun. I wish i could find more games that take these progression mechanics and expand on them. I honestly would pay more for a larger game, with perhaps 3 specialties to train the folk in and more classes. As the game stands i wish there was more, but as-is it is the most fun experience with turn-based RPGs ive ever had. Congratulations for making such an outstanding game.

Surprisingly strategic!

pretty good game for $4.00. I did a play through in 3-4 hours. $1 hour of entertainment is pretty good. Then more modes unlocked, and I realized you could make hybrid warriors, and I have about 12 hours.

The good:

1.The art style. love the animations, and bosses. they all look great.
2.the tactical game play. lots of combinations or classes, and strategies to get you through a level.
3.good upgrades. to both the town and the fighters.
4. the modes unlocked after beating the game....theres more game!

The Bad:

1. can be frustrating to build guys up, only to have them wiped out on the last boss. pick your team carefully.

Would love to see some more added. even in the way of dlc.

Great work!

For the price, this is a very well done game.

I like the many different classes your folk can become. A lot of props to the developer if he was the only one that made this game. The spelling mistakes on some of the words such as "whish" or "artefact" were kind of glaring to me though I know it's a small criticism - maybe in your next patch correct them.

The idea of building up your town in a limited amount of time was fun and made the decisions you make crucial. Even if one doesn't like a time limit, the easy mode lets you go at your own pace without the limit. Good options.

If you ever do this type of game again or an expansion, would be cool to build defenses for your town from attacks as well.

Good buy for the price.

This game is a solid 1000/10 for me. I LOVE Darkest Dungeon, and they managed to strip DD down into a cute, well designed clone that plays quick and awesome. It's missing the macabre, hopeless feel to it, but I don't believe they intended to flesh out some thought-rending eldritch story - just get to the fun, addictive parts. Thank You for a truly awesome pixel art game.

This is a dream game for lovers of RPGs, pixel art, and electronic music. The soundtrack is absurdly good, the pixel art is not only very detailed but also very animated, which compliments the soundtrack very well. The RPG mechanics are interesting and there are enough team compositions to keep you coming back for a while, even if some skills overlap and some classes are slightly underwhelming. I also really enjoy the time management aspect—it definitely forces you into thoughtful decision making about your time, which I enjoy. And to top it all off, the game is only $4. Great stuff.

SUMMARY: A minimalist, easy-to-play, complex-to-master party management RPG with permadeath and multiple game modes. Not exactly a must-buy as it's for a specialized audience - but if you want to manage a town, a party, and do it all in a streamlined fashion, it's for you.

Tinyfolks is a simple plot and a simple idea. You're a king who wants to reclaim his kingdom. You build a town that lets you recruit and train people to stop evil. You fight monsters and mash the bad guy. Oh, and you do it all in perhaps 2 hours or less. If we must resort to comparisons, think of it as "Darkest Dungeon gone funny and on the Gameboy" and you sort of have it.

So let's walk through the loop.

You build your town so you can hire Folks and train folks and equip folks. You have to make choices to unlock what you want, lending a strategic but also puzzle-like quality.

You hire folks and train them and equip them. The interaction of classes and training and equipment unlocks all sorts of options and requires planning and experimentation. There's no leveling - you pay to improve folks.

You send them forth to mash monsters in simple turn based combat. Well, simple in idea - there's a complex interaction of skills, statuses, positions, and resistances. Combat takes on a puzzle-like flavor.

Hopefully you win. It's not always easy as when a Folk dies they die, and take all their training and equipment with them. But if it happens, you can keep going - or fail and start over.

As you play, you unlock new game modes to challenge yourself! The game rewards replay.

This is all done with a Gameboy aesthetic thats very charming. Familiar pixelated looks, boopy music, all made by someone that knew what they were going for.

The game is about simple elements interacting. As hinted at above, the whole game starts to feel like a kind of puzzle as you try to find optimal paths through to victory. It looks simple, but as soon as you play beyond "Easy" it's anything but.

It's hard NOT to reccomend it as its charming, low-cost, and precise. But it isn't for everyone - it requires careful planning, accepting failure, and sometimes starting over. You can LOOSE and have to start over in this RPG.

But if you like a repeatable challenge, like unlockable classes and skill balancing, and want to do it all fast? Tinyfolks is for you. Its got a whole lot of things to do, in a well-done aesthetic, that will challenging you.

This is an extremely tight game which you can beat in a single session right out of the box. It's a nice level of difficulty and it has a good core loop. Any longer it may have outstayed its welcome, but as the game's 2-4 hours long even with one or two total party wipes I never had to find out.

An honest review. (Pierre Vandermaesen I hope you see this, I love what you have done!)

First I need to praise this game for it's amazing music, simple and cute art style. It's simplicity makes it amazing at what it tries be. There may be a few grammar errors here and there but honestly those have only made me laugh.

This game is somewhat a shorter and less stressful version of Darkest Dungeon.
In this game you're starting with one character your king or queen then being able to recruit more folks while exploring and fighting your way through the kingdom in a turn-based style. Gaining resources throughout to upgrade your camp where you can gain different folk and upgrade them, even give them classes to fulfill your own play style. This within a small world to defeat the evil forces that took your crown.

The game is great for 3-8 hours of excitement (20 hours for the achievement hunters), exploring this games secrets and mechanics. It's different classes, combined with the resources gathering makes it possible to go for your own play style with your own little army. and it is truly amazing, addicting even and I love it. This game is most definitely worth ever cent it costs and it achieves perfectly what it is going for!

But it wouldn't be an honest review without pointing out it's restrictions and flaws. And there are actually not many to be found without changing the whole core of the game adding onto it that this game is made to be minimalist RPG like game. So I'll mostly be expending on the games idea and what it could become with some time and growth.

This game is barely re-playable:
which is 100% fine considering it's not a rogue-like. But it could expand on the idea of having different paths to get to the kingdom, different units ever encounter and even different bosses for every biome. Giving different requirements to unlock certain characters or even camp buildings. and give it different unlocks by completing the game in different ways. for example giving you unlock-able upgrades for your king or queen so that on a next run you start with an other move set. Basically expanding on the base idea that's already there but mixing it with rogue-like elements. (all this of course is a lot of work and doesn't add too much to it's one time purchase value).

Difficulty:
This game is just a bit too easy for people who really like the game and want to keep playing. The difficulty throughout the game doesn't increase that much, the player gets a lot stronger than the enemies do. I've heard basically no one say they have failed a run. I believe that making the game a tad more difficult would be healthy to achieve a point where your first run should be possible but quite difficult so that good players get rewarded with the satisfactory of winning and others may fail so they can achieve victory on a second run because of the experience their first run gave them. The time decrease on the difficulty settings are fine but not great. Yes it makes the game more difficult especially with the added encounter but not barely as hard as I would've hoped. And I'm happy there also is a possibility for players to play without a day timer as I know people who stress out from them too much.
Difficulty changes can best be made by giving the enemies higher stats and better effects and to compensate for late game make it so that there are more or just bigger upgrades for your folk so instead of 5 damage upgrade a 6 damage upgrade. or exactly the opposite keeping the enemy the same but giving your folks only 4 damage upgrades instead of 5 and so on. This of course messes with the day mechanic and should be tuned accordingly. I still think that the game works fine for how it is made. This all would just add on the re-play ability and satisfactory of the game.

Challenges:
This is a great idea for the re-play ability of the game but sadly even the challenges don't add too much or actually they don't work as I believe they were intended. whilst it may limit you in some ways it doesn't force the exact challenge onto you too much. as you are still able to recruit any class from the inn. This could be solved by giving the inn only the type of unit recruits that you should be able to use in the challenge anyways. Getting a Saint in warrior mode doesn't limit you in any way. The real challenge of the challenge mode is the limited population and not the limited classes you can use and that is not what I hoped for from them. I have finished the game in folk mode and I did that using a team of 3 units: A saint, Knight and Templar. What I hoped for was seeing a team of my king and 4 folks. But the population is fixed to the levels of building you can't own cause of the challenge. and the in just game me stronger and upgrade-able units anyways.
so not much changed and it even made the town a lot less interesting because you had almost nothing do. I think this should be addressed although I do like the idea of only being able to recruit out of the inn and not being able to train units as a whole separate challenge on it's own. Or a challenge where your population is limited just but not like how it is now. Warrior mode should just have warriors, wizard mode only wizards and thief mode only thief's.

As you've seen I spend a lot of time into this and that is because I absolutely love this game and I would love to see this game or a similar game come out of this that has expanded on this idea. The minimalist and simplistic style show again that you don't need to make a game look amazing graphical wise to create a good game. This is good elements in a small package and it just works!

I greatly recommend this game for anyone to try out. You won't regret it!

I hope to see more work from you Pierre!

Troubadour's harp is absolutely busted lmao. +10 healing to everybody AND +2 ATK for everybody for 2 turns that you can stack on top of itself. Near the end game I would be riding into the boss battle with everybody at full health and +12 ATK from the stacks. Nutty

Love it. A beautifully packaged gem of a game.

honestly i really like it, I'm a sucker for this kind of retro graphics and turned based combat
however, there are bugs, here are a few that i encountered:
Not being able to select the queen for the heal, so i had to restart the game.
pressing escape while while in the menu/choosing who to explore with leads to a bugged up menu.
spelling errors that break the immersion, like "artefact"
Overall i recommend getting it for this price

✅ Solid RPG that does not need a massive time commitment
✅ Lit 8-bit OST
✅ Family friendly (Played this with my 5-year old sitting on my lap and he had a blast)

It's a small, simple game that plays very similarly to Darkest Dungeon, though you don't have to train your units endlessly to unlock all of their attacks/abilities.

Once you beat the game you unlock challenge modes, which are functionally the same game but you're restricted from using specific unit groups depending on the challenge. A single playthrough on medium difficulty takes about 2-4 hours depending on how much you toy with different builds and party compositions. I was able to beat medium in about 2 hours.

If you like the game you might play it a few more times for the challenge modes, but even if you only play it once it's pretty decent bang for your buck.

Easily some of the best $4 you could possibly spend on steam. Good RPG and town upgrade mechanics, simple but decent story, and some ABSOLUTELY BANGIN' CHIPTUNES.

Would say this is a good introductory Strategy Rougelike, just enough to make you think, but not enough to present major roadblocks. My main criticism is it overstays its welcome, it's not complex enough for repeat playthroughs despite there being trophies for them, but the hours I did play did feel worth it. If I could, honestly, I would give it mixed, because there are so many other higher quality games out there, but in a vacuum this game is fun, and serves a purpose for certain new players. Might rewrite after updates.

Worth 4 bucks! I liked the wide selection of classes to choose from.

If you like strategy / turn based games, then this may be a game you will like. It has quite a bit of classes, such as the brute, wizard, occultist, warrior, tank, etc. You can get these by giving certain training routines to your folk, that can be mixed together with other training's and give you even more classes.

Easy ass game but hopefully has more notes or preview on what a class can do.

This game is just a fun short RPG, that easy to understand, fast paced and can be beaten quickly.

I am not sure it has enough depth to be good long term, but for the price you are paying, you are getting your money worth. A fun but short game is better than a long and dull one by far. It often fails to explain how things work, but it easy enough to figure out what they mean with a little trial and error.

Really enjoyable game. It offers a little under twenty hours of gameplay if you tackle all of the challenges, and they seemed worthwhile. I had a good time mixing and matching different styles of training to see what kinds of classes they produced. Still not sure what all of the classes are like. There's over a dozen of them. I did run into a couple bugs, but only one of them was particularly nasty; forced me to delete my save and start over. Seems to be pretty rare, though. I only saw it once.

Looks like the developer's working on more content which is exciting because this game deserves it.

A fantastic minimalist little game. Nice blend of turn-based combat and base-building / hero management. Perfect UX, banger soundtrack, great overall atmosphere. And at this price point you just have to pick it up!

Suggested tagline: Imagine if Darkest Dungeon didn't hate you.

This is a fun and minimalist turn-based strategy game. Build up an RPG group, explore out into the wilds, use the resources you win to build out your town and upgrade your party, and do it all before time runs out and ultimate evil spreads over the land. Some interesting combos to be found in combining classes and how you line up your group,m with enough depth that you feel like you're making smart plays and tough decisions, but not so brutal that you'll end up losing a key character and go into death spiral like Darkest Dungeon or XCOM.

This is an easy recommendation, especially for the price.

TL;DR ppl version

Yes, get it, cozy mini-RPG, dev still works on game.

Normal civilized ppl Detailed Version

Found the game by pure chance, and it has been a nice surprise. Kudos to the Dev on the concept, very clever, 'cause it synthesizes the quintessential RPG elements in a minute, pure, minimalist way (all's there: story, char progression, crafting, alchemy, equipment, exploration, loot... etc). Impressive for a one man team. As an avid RPG, D&D and tabletop player, and working on GameDev myself, this charming little world has been a "breath of fresh air", when I just want to relax and chill out (and NOT think of narrative design nor read texts as long as this one!) - Love the gameloop, the main hub with its little buildings (that change with each improvement), and also enemy design and playable classes. The minimalist style of both Art and UI very calming, nice, clean. But what I like the most is that -up to the moment of this review- the Dev keeps expanding and polishing his product with new content, little Biomes, Classes, and Quality of Life Improvements. That's what makes one appreciate a Dev and their product, and what moves one to give them positive review. Keep up the good work!

Slightly positive. It looks pretty good, it's cute, the base-building is fun, and most importantly it's CHEAP. For this price it's a solid little game

The bad things: balance. Many abilities and artifacts (or even entire classes) are useless, you will want to artificially "prolong" a fight to buff/heal up your party before going to the next room, and the game was so easy I beat it no problem on my first try. The "+5 Attack +5 Defense" artifact is a million times better than any other, and I put it on every party member no matter their class. And it's weird how a bigger party will DECREASE your DPS against bosses, since your strongest warriors will act less often. Also there are several spelling mistakes ("enemmy")

I might play it a few more times to try out the challenge modes and check out the classes I didn't get to use my first playthrough (I got 5-6 strong people and never saw any reason to use the other ones. By the time I upgraded my newest units to the level of my oldest ones, the game was over). And none of my units were every even close to death, so I never had to replace them, and always Slept for 1-2 days between expeditions.

Also only at the end of my playthough did I realize I could go to the same location more than once... They look like quests, like once you solve it you can't return, so maybe that needs clarification.

All in all, pretty cool game, but it's far from perfect, and not at all difficult on the normal mode

Downloaded the game thinking it would be a fun little distraction that was similar to mobile games on a phone. Started playing and immediately got hooked. The strategy needed to beat the game is hidden elegantly behind the retro design. The music in the game, beautiful. Overall, a fun game that anyone should play. Can't wait for the upcoming updates.

Phenomenal little town/roster builder/manager; think a more casual Darkest Dungeon. This really is a hidden gem, if you find yourself reading these reviews, just go ahead and pick it up--you won't be disappointed!

This game fits the theme a lot... it really does feel like a tiny version of DD. its short but really really really fun. it could have some QOL changes like sorting roster and trinkets and stuff and some balancing of classes (archer OP) but its really misc. This is definitely an underpriced hidden gem. Overall im excited to see this developer grow because i love this genre and the creator did an AWESOME job at it. btw shoutouts to @beelz55, that dork ( ಠ ͜ʖಠ)

Tinyfolks is a tiny game with gigantic impact. However different than what I'd expected, from the preview at the store page, though, it does provide a smooth boombastic fun, all-in-one go... in a way that Half A Minute Hero used to catering that joyful flavor when the title 1st release.... until there are sequel / prequel and went bunked after that. Music is also nostalgically hip & did nip my ears properly throughout the rounds. Worth my 2 cents, if you asked me.
