Enjoying it so far.

Similar to Monster Hunter games, but with a much more fast paced combat. Different weapons have very different movesets, good variety of possible styles. Armor is a lot less interesting without all the armor skills, but we equip "souls" with skills (both passive, active and triggered) instead so it makes up for that.

One big positive is that the story and characters so far are at least decent enough to hold my attention, which is a trillion times better than any Monster Hunter game ever managed to.

The game has an open world too instead of zones like MH games, though I'm not sure what to make of that yet.

One big downside to be aware of in this port is the abysmal keyboard+mouse support. I usually always prefer playing those games with KB+M, but it's really not an option here, it's beyond terrible. Everything else with the port works fine, though.

Monster Hunter with japanese demon (Oni). Well after playing Monster Hunter Rise it feel so similar with grappling etc but bit more Fast-Paced. and i feel bad just found out about this game recently

Kinda like Monster hunter but less annoying.

Pros
+ No handler.
+ No loading screens.
+ Can see enemy health bar.
+ Can see how soon parts will break.

Con
- I just can't make my character look good.

Would def recommend, but I'm a little confused about the difficulty. When doing things with the main quest line with the main characters with you, the fights are all a breeze, but then the minute you go out exploring and have to solo a real boss, suddenly you're scrambling for your life, so it makes it feel like you're being carried by the npcs, which is more than a little bit embarrassing. So I'm confused. Is my gear ass? Am I tackling these bosses before I am supposed to? what's the deal? Am I just bad?

This is a good game. And a fun game.

But if I was you, I'd play Nioh 2 and take a break for 1 year and then play this one.
Also, this & Nioh 2 are better than Monster Hunter.

Though, God Eater 3 might be also fun for you. So I'd maybe do:
Nioh 2 -> Toukiden 2 or God Eater 3.

Code Vein is similar, too, though. So you're spoiled for choice.
They all scratch a similar itch, so you can just play one of them and wait 4 months and then pick another from the list.

This has the best story out of all the games mentioned, so if you really enjoy a story, I'd go for this one.

Not bad, not bad at all.
Not truly Monster Hunters. More like a Dynasty Warriors combat-wise focussed on dismembering and destroying large monsters.
The story is decent, very 'Japanese' though in all the good ways. Effectively relying on a multitude of archetypes but executing them decently once they get their development.
A lot of content.
I'm not planning to dig deep into endgame after the credits unless ever I wish to return to the game to destress but there seems to be a lot of it.
All in all, at a 50% discount well worth picking up.

Pretty fun and stylish monster hunting game. Monsters do a little too much just sitting there and letting you hit them, but it gets better as the story progresses.

If you've found this game as a non-Japanese gamer within a sea of Japanese titles to pick from, you've probably googled "games like Monster Hunter" at some point. For this purpose, this game is decent. It's NOT worth 60 dollars from the perspective of a neutral, experienced gamer, but it'll mostly scratch that itch.

If you're unfamiliar with hunting-style games, you start off in a village. And there's only one. You fight demons, carve them up for parts, turn those parts into gear, do some quests, then go hunt stronger demons and do it all over again.

There's more of a story here than you might expect. The interesting thing for me is that it's passable, in more quantity than I'd like for this type of game actually, but makes sense within the context of the setting. As apparently the only functioning human settlement for quite some distance around, and mostly isolated by zones of demonic miasma, an irritating amount of the story is locked into a power struggle between two local demon hunting factions vying for control of the town.

Yeah that's.... That's kind of it. Sure, there are lots of (mostly fetch) quests to fight monsters, and there's a decent amount of lore in the sense of an ancient civilization somehow connected to the demons, and even time travel is liberally sprinkled in right from the beginning. BUT WHO'S GOING TO LEAD THE TOWN? While in a realistic sense, this should be the most pressing topic of concern for a town's survival considering it's about to implode from within, I frequently found this pedantic element getting in the way of things I'd rather be doing by locking off NPCs I needed until I saw more of this squabbling sh*t. I feel like I've just saved a village from a massive demon incursion so that it could get on to the more important matter of Japanese nationalistic anxiety.

One major sound gripe - lack of English subtitles for NPC chatter. The game doesn't have English voice-overs, which doesn't bother me since the story cutscenes have subtitles, but you'll be spending almost the entire game out in the field, and if you're playing with NPCs, you won't know what the f*ck anybody's saying. Because of the stale and cliched nature of the story, the only way of really connecting with the characters would be listening to banter out in the zones, and if you don't speak Japanese you're just SOL.

But these things are not why you're here. The combat is fast, flashy, and a little too easy. The graphics are that of a port from a handheld, so expect last-gen quality console tier if you ramp it up. There are 11 types of weapons, each with their own move-sets. Unfortunately most of these sets don't run all that deep. Most have 4 attack sequences with the occasional one or two move variations, a weapon special and a devastating super-move to break off demon parts. While they're unique enough in their own right, you'll be mastering weapon types in hours, not days, and that's kind of underwhelming given the entire game is about combat.

Mitama are the souls of heroes that were consumed by the Oni and are randomly dropped upon death. There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 of these, each one belonging to one of 11 types, and have over a dozen passive exp-based upgrades that can mutate or add stats and effects. Equipped in a weapon slot, the type will determine your four abilities, while equipped in armor and "utility" (no spoilers!) slots will each give you categorical passives, depending. There are even synergies between Mitama who "know" each other, which can unlock special effects.

Equipment is not only made, but can be improved, and even reforged into other types of equipment. There are other, even passive ways of accumulating resources that I won't spoil for you. If you're not sure what a component drops from or where it can be found, you can highlight it in the UI and it'll tell you where to get it. From there you can go to the region or pick up a mission from the command center for the appropriate demon. You'll be using this feature A LOT.

The world is open. No really, it is. It's not instance-based like Monster Hunter, and this is a big plus for me. The map is fairly large with multiple regions and has a vague mmo-feel to it. Most demons will naturally pop up somewhere in their respective zones. Collectibles exist to expand the lore. Merchants can be saved to increase store variety, give free blacksmithing, and you'll run into the occasional NPC hunter to aid and "become friends with." Miasma can be dispelled through purifying shrines, until the point where there is no effective time limit to any region. If you want to fast travel or just walk out of the doors to murder things, this is your game.

The demons themselves range from little goblins to house-sized monsters. Behavior will change depending which parts are broken off, which is a nice touch. There's a grappling-hook style item that serves various functions, ranging from launching you towards distant monsters to snapping off parts with special moves. Demons commit to battle - no running away here, no chasing. While I was fine with that, I know some hunters won't be.

Once chunks of monsters are chopped or bashed off, they need to be purified within an undetermined length of time to pick them up as components. Some passives are tied to this, such as regaining your Focus (stamina) faster while doing so. While you're immobile for the duration, parts will remain partially purified if you have to stop for some reason.

Companion A.I. is a little TOO good. Commands are simple, but even then you can casually walk through the zones while they murder AND purify everything. I've rarely seen them let parts "expire", and they seem to be pretty good at healing and butchering demons themselves. In fifty hours I've had to resurrect an NPC perhaps four times. There have been even fewer instances of seeing them get stuck on terrain, and if you want them to follow you closely and ignore everything else, they will. I suppose you could give them each one of the four individual commands for more advanced strategies, but that leads me to the game's chief problem...

It's just too damned easy. Toukiden 2's concept of difficulty is either turning monsters into damage sponges or simply throwing two or three boss-type monsters together. I went through all the missions ignoring the game's seven elemental types and opted for neutral gear instead. I didn't improve or reforge ANYTHING. Literally hundreds of pieces of equipment in the game, and you just don't need any of it.

There are gonna be people reading this who like collecting things. They're going to make those hundreds of pieces of equipment, gather those hundreds of Mitama, just to show off in multiplayer, or because having stuff is their jam. I on the other hand would have liked to have NEEDED more advanced equipment and Mitama setups to be necessary to even survive the end-game fights, and it's just not here. Most of my singular boss fights lasted around four to seven minutes, and I did NOT exploit the possibilities.

Because of this, I couldn't find the motivation to even begin to accumulate equipment, or run through the endless dungeon mode. I did some grinding and finished the quests. I still recommend the title at 20~30 dollars because, really, how many games of this specific genre do we have to pick from?

I considered this is a good RPG like Dragon's Dogma over Monster Hunter, if you want to comparison it just because there're monsters to hunt. It's open world Action RPG with cool characters and lot of customized weapons and armors. Also, that Demon hand mechanic is the cool concept of Clutch Claw and Grappling hook combined together XD

Where to begin?

The first thing that struck me about Toukiden 2, other than the incredible art direction, was the rich character creation. There are seventy-three hair styles alone, and it should be noted that you can freely redesign your character from your home, whenever you wish.

Ease, and joy of play, are recurring themes with this game. It's fast, easy to grasp, and immediately rewarding. Conventions from similar games such as crafting, enhancing, even inventory management, etc. are streamlined here.

I was surprised at how the story pulled me in. Oftentimes I would push through the main quests just to progress it. On two occasions, I was unexpectedly hit squarely in the feels. I became totally invested in these characters and their plight.

As others have mentioned, AI controlled allies are so capable as to be almost indistinguishable from human players.

Animations, especially for the larger enemies are delightful. They'll grimace in pain, clutch an aputated appendage, their posturing changes as they take critical damage.

There is such a vast amount of content here in terms of weapons, armor, components, sundry items, collectibles and whatnot, that I do consider the ( still ) high asking price completely warranted. I'm currently fifty-four hours in, and have a plethora of things I want to do, yet. Collecting the available Mitama ( ability granting souls, which level up! ) is an addicting side adventure in itself.

Judging from some of the other reviews here, Toukiden 2 is not for everyone. For me though, it's quickly become one of my all-time favorite games.

TL;DR: An okay game, held back by what it was initially released on by its overall graphical fidelity, making it look quite like an early PS3 game (I see you Resistance 1!) And some rather poor handling of "hard mode" once you unlock it, although it does feature an after story if you are interested.

Toukiden 2, an okay game, doing nothing out of the extraordinary, with some rather... unhandled "hard mode", where it mostly wants you do gather materials whilst being "low level" equipped, which in result you'll have fights that usually lasted roughly 5 min (for large oni) to about 7 to 10 minutes, so hard mode just practically increases enemy health and slightly on damage, whilst not increasing your damage in proportion to difficutly in terms of rewards.

The story's nothing to write an essay about either, but rather just feels like it is there for the sole reason to mkae the game exist, what they could've done is to basically have used more CGI cutscenes instead of ingame cutscenes, as ingame cutscenes are technically just the bland animations you already see, in addition, overall models, textures, and animations are rather low quality, and my theory was because of the PS Vita, as you can play it on that, too... and it's for the most part playable with only a controller.

Conclusion: Overall okay, and they should've made some differences in the builds, making it look a bit more crisp on consoles and better on computers (depending on hardware of course), and perhaps more work into animations, as most normal NPCs (humans) feature some rather basic animations.

Bought this game to satisfy my urge until ICEBORNE released.
But then I liked the story and the characters, especially the female ones. Haha.
From start of the story until end of Chapter 6, I have been staying with Long Sword, because well trying to satisfy my samurai soul aside from MHW. At least until sheathing slash arrived.
Now I main Sword & Shield, after doing all the weapons' training.
Still suck at long range weapon even here. Oof.
Other weapons that interest me are: Naginata, Chain Whip, and Dual Knifes/Blades.
At this point has reached Phase 6 in story. Now moving on to HARD settings and completing Phase 7.
After that moving on to the multiplayer phases. Better fulfill me until IB.
My opinion on the game? My AI teammates are too OP for sad me. RECOMMENDED!!!

Remember Monster Hunter players saying Longsword mains were weeaboos ?

Here's your safe space. There's also longswords in this game. With the Iai slashes before it was cool.

Oh and do try to hop on multiplayer and find players. Jump in their game. Makes you unlock some new NPCs to choose from for missions !

Game is fun, you get to be as confused about everything that isn't about you slashing big monster. JUST LIKE MONSTER HUNTER !

'' Where do I buy weapons ? How do I upgrade ? Where are the weaknesses ? How does the Mitama system work ? How is it good ? Is there a meta ? Do I do good damage ? where's that NPC ? ''

Edit : if you want my Player Character in your possible companions, add me or hit me up

Mitama system is '' kinda'' confusing. Just mix some stuff you want to do, most of the passives stack, most if not all unique passives do NOT stack. That's all you need to know.

Have fun ! ( Look for guides about Mitama weapons, they are the ''Real'' good weapons, even for endgame ! )

As much as I would like to review this game without mentioning Monster Hunter world, it seems like almost everyone stumbles into this game because they want an alternative to Monster Hunter World.
I have close to 400 hours on MHW, and so I thought I could give some comparison review between the two games.

TLRD : Score 7/10 Toukiden 2 is more casual Monster Hunter World game. If you are looking for a challenging and complex experience like you found in MHW, you might be disappointed. However, it doesn’t mean this game is without its own merit and depth. I highly recommend anyone who is looking for similar experience, but with more casual playthrough.

Comparison Review
I will compare the two games in several categories to tell you what I thought Toukiden did well and failed in others.

Story (7/10) – Honestly, MHW didn’t have a compelling story, so beating MHW in story aspect is not much of an accomplishment. Toukiden 2 storyline isn’t anything particularly interesting. There have been far better stories like Witcher, FFX, and etc. However, I would say Toukiden 2 has some interesting characters that shed some light on somewhat bland story line. There were some really good character development moment, and frankly it’s enough to keep most people engaged throughout the campaign mode.
Graphic (6/10) – If you have played DW series, you can expect the similar graphic. I personally like DW series, and it does not bother me. However, there is no doubt MHW has far better graphics than the outdated graphics of Toukiden2. Enemies look pretty cool and interesting, but they don’t look nearly as cool and distinctive as monsters in MHW.
Weapon Combat (6/10) – If I have to compare it to MWH, I must say it’s rather disappointing. There are plenty of weapons to play in Toukiden 2, but only few are interesting enough unlike MHW where all weapons have extremely unique playstyle and just as fun as other weapons. Playing with bow in Toukiden 2 was extremely boring to me. However, this might just be my preference. Each weapons does have its unique combos and mechanics. For example, Club does more damage if you hit enemy with its tip and rely heavily on charge moves. Sword has some very interesting mechanic with cleansing sword where you hold attack button after a combo that leaders to extra damage to your next hit. It’s fairly interesting and fun to play with. However, if you have played MHW, expect to be disappointed slightly.
Skill combat (8/10) – well weapon mechanic is somewhat lackluster, but toukiden 2 makes it up with Skills. Depending on what Mitama you have equipped, there are many different passive and active skills thatyou can play around with. Also, there are many different battle style that changes your combat completely. It’s really fun to play around with mitama to find battle style that suits your playstyle. Only problem is that a lot of mitama are quite useless T_T.

Loading, speed (8/10) – I WISH MHW HAD THE LOADING TIME TOUKIDEN HAD! Jesus my fucking god. One thing that annoyed the hell out of me in MHW was the loading time. Everything took so long to load. This is probably one part that Toukiden 2 excels far above MHW. My computer isn’t that great, but when I load a quest in MHW, it takes like 10~15sec. Toukiden 2 takes like 3 to 4 sec. That’s not all. MHW is all about being realistic. Therefore, everything seems to take a long time to do, like picking up plants, leaving the battle. Toukiden 2 seems to shorten that unnecessary time by A LOT. No matter how fast you beat a monster you need to add like 1 to 2 min extra because you have to wait for loading and your loot to show up. TOukiden 2 is all about killing the beast and gtfo. I love the speed.

Demon hand (9/10) – TOukiden 2 has something called demon hand. You will get to use it from the beginning. You can use it to launch yourself high up or counter your enemy’s strong move. It’s a great addition to the gameplay that makes the battle extremely dynamic. MHW added clutch claw in Iceborne. It’s very similar to that but much more powerful in Toukiden 2.

I will probably update this review as I play more Toukiden 2. I quite enjoy the game. If you just wanna take a break from MHW, and play something more casual, join in.

One of the best monster hunter style game. it even stand on its own especially by giving some unique and well executed semi-open world game, smart A.I (which makes solo very enjoyable ), unique mitama build system and easy to learn but hard to master weapon categories. Definitely a good gameplay

The graphics itself is not the best but it fits well with the theme, not to mention that its quite friendly with low-specs pc, the art is beautiful, and of course the design of the armor and weapon are pretty good. the only downside is that you need to have a controller to play this game on its full glory. Because you can only use keyboard and no mouse support which is kind of suck for some people, therefore i recommend on using controller altogether.

in the end, this game is severely underrated and is a must for every monster hunter gameplay fans and even casual player who want to play for story and free roaming and killing monster

PS: there are also several free DLC bonus such as mitamas and tenko armor, you need to search it first on steam and install it one by one tho which can be easily missed

There's too much unsubbed dialogue that's not combat banter, allies are sharing contextual information and you don't know what they're saying. Very solid entry in the big game hunting genre. Weapons and tactics are simpler and fights are faster, like a Dauntless rather than God Eater or Monster Hunters marathon fights.
Combat is highly skill based and most hits and defeats feel fair. Great visual design of the settings, demons, weapons&armors, and NPCs. Interesing side content.

I picked this up on sale for 30$, and it's good enough that if a third installment comes to Steam I'll pick it up for full price at launch.

This is hyper Japanese Monster Hunter with a huge amounts of weps and a really cool augment system with a deceiving amount of depth in the Mitama's also the total destruction mechanic add this element of originality to every mission as you learn to adapt to a monster who's flying in impossible ways because you shattered one of it's wings out of existence. if you want to kill cool demons with strong cultural backgrounds this is your game!

Monster hunter with demons in Japanese history setting

tenshi2520

I picked this up because I wanted a game with a Japanese setting and atmosphere, but didn't feel ready to tackle Nioh or Sekiro. I'm satisfied so far, but I'd add a few caveats, at least up to the point where I am at the time of writing this, a couple hours into the game.

I did get my fix for the atmosphere of a fantasy Japan I was looking for. The buildings, NPCs' costumes, Oni designs and voice work really helps put players in that setting. The voice work is noteworthy for not having any of the over-the-top character-types or delivery that pop up in a lot of games and anime. The subtitles are also well-translated and I read/heard several parts where the developers clearly made an effort to change some culturally-specific phrases into ones that would work better for English players. It's worth pointing out for anyone who might be on the fence due to the game's Japanese title and art style.

The gameplay, however, has a lot of Japanese design elements that I found somewhat tedious. The game is basically tutorial for the first hour with a lot of long conversations. The plot is fairly simple, but the characters spend a lot of time explaining it and the game's systems in both voiceovers and text. These continue when you are thrown into a bit of action, and I missed a few of the tutorial messages as a result. There are a lot of systems to get familiar with, mostly based around upgrading your skills and gear, and there are a lot of menus and "Confirm" buttons to navigate through. Hopefully I'll be able to experiment and figure those out for myself when the game stops aggressively guiding me along.

In general, despite the slow and tedious start, nothing has put me off from wanting to get further into the game's world, but I think it's good to be warned that the pacing and hand-holding at the start can be a bit over-bearing.

Co-Op play is BROKEN.
Desync between players is so bad that you will each see monsters in different locations, making it impossible to coordinate attacks. Sometimes you watch your friend swing their weapon at thin air then you see a monster 100ft away suddenly die. Yeah, your friend was fighting that monster but it doesn't move or appear in battle on your screen. Other times you are unlucky enough to have a monster attack you but nobody else in your group can see it so you must fight it solo.
I can't speak to the single player because that's not why I bought it, but if you are looking for a co-op game, stay far away.

I'm not anywhere near post game or the intended point people play these games but I think the gameplay loop is a massive improvement over the original.

I went into this with vague memories of Toukiden Kiwami, and the first few fights were really great. I got a mission and was waiting for transport. I noticed there was no timer so I sauntered over to the village gate and I was introduced to the fact this is basically an small scale open world JRPG, there isn't even a loading screen when you leave the hub without teleports.

Also the game has legitimate narrative twists, and there is a good amount of setup and payoff. I legitimately never expect to praise a game like this for its story but so far it's doing a damn good job. I like pretty much all of the characters who have been introduced so far. They may initially read as an anime archetype but they pretty quickly grow into their own.

Mechanically it feels pretty good. being able to grind and carry over your special attack that gives you a free cut into a hard fight you're expecting is good. The buffs you get from food or onsen last for like an hour so you have full freedom to just spend a ton of time in the open world without leaving anything on the table. Some aspects like Dexterity (critical hit chance) and Aegis (????) aren't really explained so it might be worth running through a guide or two prior to playing.

Do not buy this game is you're buying only for cooperative play. In my opinion, this game should get a multiplayer tag, not a cooperative tag.
You cannot play the campaign with your friend, but you can do missions which kill the same mobs. Fine. But your character progress requires you to play through the majority if not the entire campaign alone. Unlock the ability to upgrade weapons, bag space, mitama slots. That's not cooperative, that's multiplayer.

That aside, other aspects of the game.

Pros:
- Good weapon type and armour skin variety.
- Multiple elements to play around with Oni weaknesses.
- Multiple mob types
- Interesting part break mechanic, with monsters switching fighting style if you break off multiple parts (e.g. legs)
- Progress mechanic with allies, and multiple mitama types and slot differences give a good variety of builds

Cons:
- The Cooperative thing
-Weapon fighting combos are fairly limited and can get boring.
- No damage numbers, leading you to guess what combos do the most damage. Throughout the whole game you won't know if your playstyle is effective or not. Also, good luck comparing weapons effectively.
- No healthbars on mob without using True Sight. Curious mechanic, but ends up just being a loss to quality of life and brings nothing extra when fighting monsters.
- Weapon upgrade path is a bit similar to monster hunter, but without an actual tree. You can only see your next upgrade, so have no idea on any pathing.

Lets talk about the elephant in the room, the game is a MH clone sort to say. Now that we presented ourselves lets get to the game. I played this title since Toukiden before kiwami for the vita had about 800 hr in total ( I know rookie numbers leave me be XD) yeah the golden day *sniff* any who I've always loved this game from the start its unique demon (oni) hunting practice and seeing the weapon list go from 5 to 10 was mind blowing, you do NOT have to play the TK or Kiwami to understand the story it is just its own stand alone title it has a few easter eggs here and there but nothing much.
Pros:
-More weapons and each unique with there own play-style in terms of game ever weapon is good you just need the right mitamas to make them hurt
-Story has a few twist and the very first time is amazing
-Most monsters are unique some just re-skins
-Difficulty average you use A-I companions to help you in each Oni Slaying adventure so kinda easy tbh some quest you will solo but others you just take any unit you want XD
-Open world with 6 different regions to explore and different Oni in each

Cons:
-This port has bugs a few, I had an audio bug and it was very annoying other reviews go more in depth
-Price is a bit high for a port wait for a sale like me I got it at about 17 dollars Wurf!
-combat gets stale I say this because I've read a few reviews that say this but this game gives you 10 weapons ..... just use the others but I bring it up cause I know some people don't like that.
-Multiplayer is that Multiplayer! not co-op you can't finish the story with friends only solo. But you can fight the demons with other people in the online lobby like the MH Titles of yore XD I say this so you don't do like some that bought the title thinking its a co-op.

Conclusion
I'm sorry I really can't give you more cons do to me being bias take it as you may, the game expanded from its predecessors and made something better a few nerfs to some weapons that were to OP in the other titles but buffs to other.....looking at you duo blades. But I digress I love this game with a passion and hope that it gets another sale so people can play it as well. Oni in Fortune out ! Happy slaying!

Good game, lazy port. If you're one of those people that complains a lot and nitpick at everything thing, then don't buy even if it's on sale for $0.99. You will have a field day shredding this port apart and you're not wrong, it's objectively a bad port. Worst I've seen in years. But I love the monster hunter "hunting style" game play loop enough to look past the extremely bad/lazy port and would recommend if only you're off the same mindset.

First, we need to address the elephant in the room - constant Monster Hunter references. It's obvious that people will compare it to the much bigger franchise due to the similar idea and mechanics but i think it should be taken as a compliment.

The core gameplay is focused on fighting with monsters - they are split into few groups, small, medium and large and the last group is the one you will constantly hunt for. Every monster has its weakness which you can exploit - cutting off arms, legs, wings and other body parts weakens them and brings you precious crafting resources.

In terms of gameplay, the most interesting part is fighting. Amount of tweaks and changes you can do: equipment, skills, mitamas (souls of ancestors that give you buffs) and teammates. That's one of the helpful and useless (depends on the situation) thing - you are able to assemble a team of bots (based on the story characters) that will aid you in your fights. Sometimes you will find yourself much more weaker than they are at the start of the game but in the late game they start to be less and less relevant and you start caring about them only as a meat shield.

Crafting is quite straight forward - gather X amount of Y resources and you can transform it into Z. The problem starts when you wish to craft specific type of weapons - you'll know the weapon recipe only when you gather every material needed for it. It makes crafting specific items a little bit trickier but you can always help yourself with some googling.

Visually the game already looks a bit old but it still holds its atmosphere. Peaceful forests and grasslands transform into wild arenas where you fight with terrifying monsters (i still cannot forget how one of them started creepily crawling to me after i cut off its legs). They all look great, some of them are less scary but still everything looks terrific. In terms of level design it's nothing special - arenas with corridors but i didn't expect anything more.

The game offers main story, hunt missions (used to farm specific monster ingredients), ruins (some sort of endurance challenge) and multiplayer. The last one is not so crowded but there's still some people on discord who look for playing buddies.

Overall i'd say this game is worth it for someone who likes:

    • Asian-themed games
    • Grind
    • Hundreds of possible builds
    • Sometimes a little bit weeb-ish atmosphere

I enjoyed playing this game but i don't think i'll ever come back to it. It's a good one-time adventure.

This is the kind of game that you can just replay and replay and replay. It is very much a fun, lore rich world, with interesting enemies and a beautiful art style with unique weapons and mechanics! While yes it does not compare graphically to other games, this game is a good example of when graphics do not matter, for the game is just too much fun to play. I originally had this on Xbox 360, and when I found it again on Steam, you bet your keesters I bought it again.

the game is not graphic heavy so it can run rather well on most set ups. it is similar to monster hunter in the way that you fight beasts and use materials from them to make weapons and armor but the similarities end there. the story line and the way the characters come to life are much different in this game and it really pulls you in.

Story not: bad; Character design: good; pc port: terrible; Combat: enjoyable; Graphic: dated
This series has potential, but KT should work harder to polish it before release it to public.
If one want to use keyboard+mouse in this game, try "Virtual Controller", it can use keyboard_mouse to simulate a xbox controller.

This is not MHW and people should treat this as a hunting "JRPG" rather than a hunting simulator like almost every Monster Hunter and God Eater titles out there.

The open world feels amazing, not too empty and rather fair weapons all across the board. Graphics aren't that overwhelmingly outstanding, just standard but it's kinda nice. Combat feels fluent but with less "impact" on each hit compared to other titles, and the AI is rather OP. But as I said, treat it more as a JRPG because when you don't use any AI partner, oh boy would you rage so bad like me. You also got to level some equipment called "mitama" that'll give you bonus stats or boosts to certain weapon moves, so there's that extra grinding. Still pretty fun though, you can try tons of build.

For bugs, perhaps a rather frequent-to-none crashes and almost non-existent FPS drops. The good thing about this game is the autosave that could save you from crashes right after you fought a boss or explored the areas for an extensive time, and you can also save whenever (except in combat).

I have played and finished many Monster Hunter-like games on PS Vita. Soul Sacrifice (delta expansion also), Freedom Wars, Toukiden 1. I enjoyed Toukiden 1 actually.

I really wanted to get into the game and play it, and I know this is a PC port, but this game is actually capped at 60FPS and 1080p. You cannot have your resolution higher than 1080p, and the game is locked at 60 FPS.
For those who can endure such low resolution and FPS, I would guess that this game is worth the shot expecially if you liked the first one, but for me it's a no.

Great game, I'm really enjoying it. There are many ways to customize your fighting style through the wide variety of weapons and Mitama (warrior spirits you can equip for passive and active abilities). The combat is very satisfying; nothing's more fun than charging up your scythe-on-a-chain weapon, then throwing it like a buzzsaw to slice off a demon's tail.

The game isn't very challenging (at least not where I am, ~13 hours in), but it's nice to boot up and just enjoy some fun action without requiring intense focus.

A very good "monster hunter" & "wu shuang" style game. Fun and engaging, More content and many improvements than Toukiden kiwami, which is also a very good game.

ROBERT LANDOLT
ROBERT LANDOLT

It's a very good game and fixes a lot of the issues the first game had while gaining more of its own Identity instead of being just another monster hunter clone, but it badly needs a Kiwami version with the missing oni from the previous game. The mitama system is one of the most fun skill gimmick system I've come across in a hunting game, but the small pool of oni available to fight means you don't nearly have enough fights to experiment builds with.

I can't recommend it at full price but if it goes 60% off or more it's a bargain.

Do you like Monster Hunter?
This is the question that should be considering when you are thinking of getting this game.

If your answer is no, then please stop reading here. This game won't offer you a new experience that will change your perspective.

Gameplay:
TLDR: You kill demons (oni). You harvest the body parts by "purifying" the parts you cut off. You make gear with slightly bloody demon body parts. Rinse, repeat. Monster hunter, but with demons.

There are multiple types of weapons within the game, each with their own unique move sets. Some are more difficult to learn than others and the variety ensures you will find a style of weapon you prefer. I recommend playing through the tutorial for each weapon and settle on one or two to focus on.

There is also the mitama system. Essentially you collect the souls of famous people throughout history (mainly Japanese) and equip them to unlock boosts and different attack styles. These allow you to change things up. Some mitama allow you to teleport, some focus on destroying body parts (making farming easier), some focus on helping you heal or support your team, and a couple even help you earn money easier. You can easily combine a slow, hard-hitting weapon with a mitama combination set that increases your attack speed and gives you bonus effects for your specific weapon so the combinations are refreshing.

They also introduce the "demon hand", aka a grappling hook, making gameplay more dynamic and 3 dimensional. This is because the demon hand can be used to launch aerial attacks against large demons. The demon hand can also be used to interrupt demon attack patterns, stagger them, then knock them down if you time the grapple at the right time during the demon attack animation.

There are other features like "destroyer attacks" which are used to destroy body parts instantly, and the "oni burial" that can only be used when your unity gauge is full, which does massive damage to a demon when it hits.

Overall, the gameplay is fluid and fast paced.

Story:
There is a story. It isn't half bad. I don't want to spoil anything so I will leave it at that.
Post-game also unlocks many new types of demons to fight.

Music:
There is some background music. I think. It's forgettable with no real headbangers.

Graphics:
The graphics has it's highs and lows. Environments are pretty bland. This game was made for handheld and you can tell. Weapons and armor look very cool. There are lots of weapons and armors to collect and upgrade.

Overall impression?
If you like Monster hunter (or never played Monster Hunter) and this game is on sale, try it out. You might like it.

If you don't like Monster Hunter, then hard pass. Don't bother.

After putting close to 350 hours into the game, I feel like I have experienced enough in it to write this review. (I don't write them unless I've truly played them through.)

Most people will be looking at this game as a MH clone or some other copy. To which I would say yes it certainly has similar gameplay features, if it means being a human fighting some large creature, then yes.
However, this game does stand out as different and personally I prefer Toukiden 2 compared to MH or Dauntless for that matter. Mostly due to these factors:
-Story line (I always appreciate a storyline of some kind to get me invested in the world I'm playing in; and this one is actually pretty decent. As well as a mystery character arc surrounding the protagonist; no spoilers.)
-Interesting open world (Yes I am one of the 1.8% of players to unlock the full map)
-Good Companion system (Good AI that don't shout the same line over and over .... Looking at you dragons dogma. HAHA! That's a joke by the way. Also good and likeable characters.)
-Endless mode
-Optional Min/Max RPG system
-An actual decent Character Creator
-Player card Data Exchange system (Similar to GE, so you can use multiplayer characters as companions in singleplayer lobby.)
-Good replay value
-Satisfying combat system
-Good for Solo or Party play
There are many more but I don't want to go through them all here. Overall this game is among my favourites to exist.
I'd like to give some advice for ones looking to buy this game, for there are things that I would like to warn about.
The Main one being ....

BUY WHEN IT IS ON SALE!!!!!

Despite it being a fantastic game, I would not give £49.99 + £15.96(DLC) for it. (No non-MMO game in my book is worth that kind of money as you could buy several other games for this one.)
Toukiden 2 does go on sale, sometimes up to 70% off, so wait for it then.
The DLC's are fun and good but rarely go on sale for some reason.

I hope this will help someone come to a decision they like and enjoy this great game.
Feel free to ask some questions and I'll be happy to answer those I can. please follow the steam guidelines when doing so.

Have fun and stay safe.

I bought this game because I thought it looked like a great way to segue from Monster Hunter. And I ended up being incredibly disappointed by it. I do not feel it did anything well. It wasn't horrible per se, but it was just incredibly bland. The gameplay was very floaty and completely unsatisfying. It just felt like a slog to get through. It also had a really intrusive story I did not entertaining at all. If you thought MHW's story felt tacked on, you'll absolutely hate how in-your-face and tacked on this one was.

In a world overrun by Oni. A group called as Slayers devote themselves protecting lives and eradicating the menace. Born in this is the strong friendship and will to overcome each obstacles.

The game itself has strong world building, satisfying gameplay, captivating soundtrack and positvely emotional story. The mechanics are simple and easy to grasp, with the twist of having the aid of the spirit of "Mitamas", cards containing portraits of historical and fictional characters from japanese mythology. And they are very drawn well.

I may find myself replaying this game as it has a good replayability and it has created a connection to me through the story. Some compare it to MH but Im looking at this game in its own identity, each has its own unique story and characters which draws you in.

Mortal Motö
Mortal Motö

Great game if you're looking for a fast-paced RPG-ish game that's all about killing big monsters
Basically, you spend 5-15 minutes beating the living daylights out of gigantic monster with a group of friends (AI, unless you have friends who play this), ripping off its limbs only to later use them as material for new weapons and armor. If this sounds fun, this might be a game for you. Doesn't matter if you don't have friends, since the AI is very competent. Almost too competent.

Not only is the game play fast paced and fun but the story, characters and world building is great too. In fact, I wasn't too impressed by the gameplay at first and I only gave this game a chance because I liked the characters and story so far. And I'm glad I did since the game turns out to be pretty fun.

The long battles are kinda positive and negative. Sometimes it feels like you're just whacking the monster for an eternity and nothing happens. Other times you have a monster spending the last few minutes desperately trying to slam you with its body because it has no limbs left and it's moments like that when you really feel like you've had a long and satisfying fight with a truly gigantic creature.

However, there are negatives:
The open world doesn't matter much. Sure, it looks kinda cool but it's essentially just an glorified hallway with some wide areas every now and then. If you're looking for something like Skyrim or Witcher 3 you'll be sorely disappointed. Also, the monsters don't live dynamically there: they spawn in the exact same locations and just hang in there waiting to be killed. Therefore I'd say this game isn't so much a monster hunting game. You don't spend time preparing for a specific monster or tracking it down etc. The game also doesn't reward you for exploring much (except with multipurpose rocks and some stones that reveal tiny bits of the lore).

The community is dead. The game's peak player count has been 20 players at the same time during last 3 months. Multiplayer is obviously dead (not that I've even bothered trying). Got a question? Good luck finding anyone to answer. There's no community, no fan-made wiki. The game doesn't explain much (like what does dexterity do? Well, apparently it adds critical hit chance but you have to google that information).

The game does feel a bit cheap. I mean it is a port from a handheld from 2016. And apparently a bad port at that (BUT I never had any issues).

While I loved the story, it did feel a bit too long at times (or rather, there were fetch missions that felt like they existed only to make it a bit longer). Luckily it's still only around 20 hours, which isn't too bad by RPG(-ish) standards.

But regardless of all this complaining I'm still here 6 months after beating the story. Normally I consider myself done with a game after finishing a story and uninstall the game but I couldn't bring myself to do that. And that's because the core gameplay is great: take a mission to slay monsters, go to slay the said monsters, upgrade gear and take more difficult missions.

Great game but ONLY during a discount (I myself paid around 20€). This is not a 60€ PC game, especially in 2021.

Edit: Just finished a 26 minute fight. Yeah. They can get long.
Edit 2: the game comes with a ~70 page manual which worth checking out. Answers quite a few questions.

Pretty fun if you always felt that games like Monster Hunter could have used a better story and actual (named!) characters. This game aint no Monster Hunter but it scratches this itch a little.

I
I

It is a weird game.
Obviously inspired by Monster Hunter it tries to do things slightly different but those parts are not developed enough make them good.
It is heavily story focused. To the point when It locks you out all the time from doing optional missions or taking specific AI partners in fight.
AI parters by the way are very important part of the gameplay. Mostly because of how fat the monsters are.
They also don't run like in MH so you never really get a break from whacking the big fella.
Breaks are also a very important part of the gameplay. By targeting specific parts of the monster you can break and stun him for a few seconds.
However, he almost immediately grows it back in the form of a shadow.
Some of the parts can be permanently removed with specific skill-demon hand, which is also a very important mobility tool, that lets you move around faster and change targets almost instantly.
All that does not sound bad but it is. The whole dismembering system is frustrating and satisfying at the same time. You can cut the legs off that nasty spider, but they are going to be back in no time. Why?
Weapon moveset is poor and my personal enjoyment would benefit greatly from being able to change weapons while being on the mission outside of town but that's not how the system works.
There is a soul system which adds complexity to the your build but main game is easy enough to just equip something and forget about it.

The music is really good and the character's art look amazing, the japanese VA as always is solid and the story itself is entertaining enough
However I didn't feel like continuing playing after main story and online is dead.
From technical issues game doesn't work with MKB and it's locked to 1080p60.

Will Continue Review Later,

I use a PS4 gamepad and this game is very fun.

I like the gameplay very much.

It's an open world version of Toukiden, which I find much more fitting that the usual spawn in kind of maps from Tokiden: Kiwami.

I am sad that the Kiwami characters are missing, but it's cool that you can wear the classical characters' outifts.

Toukiden 2 is a game that was overshadowed when it first released back in 2016, because there's bigger titles that are also being released during at that year also. (OverWatch, Dark Souls 3, Uncharted 4, etcs.)

Gameplay is good a little sluggish 7/10,
Story is decent 6/10

Seeing this was on sale again, felt like I should make a quick review of it.

First off: The online multiplayer doesn't work.
The game's been out for years, but hasn't been patched at all.
Obviously the online is pretty dead now - but if you're planning to play with friends, you might not be able to.

With that aside: I'm a big fan of games like this and Monster Hunter.
Toukiden has some cool build variety due to its mitama system and how they synergise with different weapons, but the movement and attacks never felt as satisfying as Monster Hunter's. Doesn't feel like they have the same weight.

The game is still decently fun to play single player, but I can't recommend it when they've abandoned it in this state.

Not really a review but thoughts. It's a fun game and the grinding isn't that bad. Plus upgrading your equipment, crafting and collecting Mitama is actually enjoyable. What I do dislike it the way the AI is set up. I been doing a lot of ruins runs for materials and it seems like the AI is the worst when your "trying" to work together to take down the Boss. Cause when your attacking the boss the AI kinda "shoves" you away or blocks your attacks. So unless your a Ranged Character, Melee classes suck. Sure we can take some hits but honestly if the AI keeps blocking your attacks making it so you do crap. You mise well stand in the corner wait 30 minutes doing something else and revive them when they die.

Keyser Söze
Keyser Söze

A decent game with a lot of charm. Very Japanese flavoured. Throws you a mechanics info dump overload at the beginning, you get one of every weapon type right away and there's about 10, so picking your first weapon takes awhile, and then there's all the perks and stats and green hand thing to figure out all at the start. But by mid point it all makes sense what's what's. Middling story, it's fairly generic, but the characters are quirky and fun. The controls are a bit clunky but not bad. The character names above your party members can't be shut off and that is my biggest complaint, I can't stand health bars, numbers, symbols and names floating around in games, unless it's turn based rpgs, but even then they can get in the way if they're too big or too many, HUD clutter is the worst.
