The mechanics are good and satisfying, the story starts good but it ends abruptly and is completely unfinished!

heeehhh, not really sure if i like what they did in this game, the atmosphere and music is still cool.
So happy they went back to the classic elements in Trine 4.

the trine series is great. has very nice visuals and music as well as good characters. this one obviously deviates from the standard formula, but it still works well. pretty sure all of the trine games are good. i admit i've only beaten 1 and 2, but regardless the series is great. check out videos if you are curious.

I cannot recommend this game as it is essentially incomplete.

Trine 3 starts out rather promisingly but then just ends abruptly. Not having kept up with the developers, I can only assume that they ran out of funding or some other issue arose. The fact that the entire storyline is left unfinished and then ignored in following entries, supports this theory. It's a rather unsatisfying situation.

That said, you can derive a measure of enjoyment from what does exist (as can be seen via playtime). If you're a diehard Trine fan, it may be worth checking out this game despite the aforementioned major flaw.

Why the hate? It is just as frustrating as any other Trine game but just as gorgeous. That's the balance lol. The depth mechanic did make it more difficult but overall this was par for the course. If you liked the prior 2 then this is a must buy.

This 3rd entry has beautiful graphic but since the developer decided to go full 3D, the control sometimes gets really frustrating. I wish the story had a complete ending too. Still worth a playthrough though if you like the series.

The game is fantastic. The puzzles were challenging enough and the levels were fun to explore. However, the game just ends abruptly. It's left unfinished. I, for one, don't like to start stories and just leave them before completing them. If the game ever updates to finish the rest of the story, then I will change my review, but that's highly unlikely at this point.

I loved Trine 1, 2 and 4, I hated this one and could not stomach finishing it. Pseudo-3D does not work for it and is very confusing.

Controls changed for the 3d environment and were difficult to adapt to. I had hoped for a gameplay experience similar to Trine 1&2 but was disappointed.

IMO a good game despite being 3d. Only cons are combat and the game being too short.

Eternity

No issues with the gameplay, honestly enjoyed the game and the puzzles. It was fun to put a couple hours into the game. However, the game is incomplete and leaves you on a cliffhanger for the story, the developers have 0 intentions of finishing the story. Although it is a fun play its not worth getting invested into a partially completely and never to be completed game. Play the others instead

Yes but :
- 100% done in 5 hours
- 3D is not really a big matter except for 1 bonus stage which is awful
- The really problem with T3 is its length and scenario
- The end is a big clifhanger, just like you have finished the 1st chapter but its really the end
- No DLC to end the story so poor content

I love the series but this one (in 3D) just isn't working.

Threequel changed the direction. The game is played now in fully 3D. It was also decided to tell a more epic story about the birth of Trine. But the trouble is, the story wasn't finished (budget and development problems). It's not a bad game, it still has the spirit and vibe of the series. The gameplay is obviously slightly different and become more casual. Puzzles in 3D have completely ceased to be difficult. The two player co-op is still here, but the game is very short. The story is interesting, but this is only 1/3 of what should have been released. It's just sad, but you still can enjoy this beautiful fairy tale.

Short, but delightful! Beautiful art, smart co-op puzzles, polished game-play. Me and my gf loved it!

The 3D world looks amazing but is really difficult to steer the characters through. On top of that, some characters feel a lot more useful than others. We had several occasions where one player got stuck in a completely different part of the level from the others in front of an obstacle that needed 2 to overcome. Virtually all of the puzzles that involved moving parts malfunctioned on us (ropes not being attached; bridges disappearing...) but we glitched our way through. Bit of a waste of time overall even though there were some absolutely brilliant moments.

Good, could've been great if they'd finished the game.

I'd say skip it unless you really want to get the chieves.

They pretty much retcon it out of existence in Trine 4, which is a real shame because this had a lot of potential.

CLampToN

They made it mostly 3d. 3d Made the controls while playing platform levels harder. It also affected the camera angle in a bad way. There is no character customization. There used to be a skill, items, and other options to make the gameplay rich but now it is turned into a regular 3d game. The art design is amazing as always but this one is the worst trine game.

Playable if you are looking for a great art-designed and funny medieval-style game. But remember, no character customization.

did developers over think the classic 2d puzzle trine series and try to make it something its not? yes. this game is a one play at best, with the story being half finished, mechanics broken. Its great they ignored this installment of the series and went back to formula to create trine 4. trine 3 is a must skip.

Phew, took me a while to fully complete this game - I think I have rage quitted this game a few times too.

First Impression? Oh wow! It's 3D, must be something!

What's My Thought About It? OMG 3D is just a nightmare, it makes jumping so much harder as compared to 2D. The graphics are pretty, art is well done like the previous Trine, but holy crap, it's so hard to gauge the distance between platforms/objects, it's either the game is poorly designed or I have very bad spatial perceptual skills. Story wise was quite a let-down, felt like half-done. In short - as much as I enjoyed the time with my co-op buddy, it's quite a pain to play

Special Note: If you are planning to play multiplayer with friends, make sure the host is the same person all the time if you wish to continue the story together/ get the achievements. So it's like you've gotta wait for each other to progress for achievements. If you can't consistently play with that person or if that person prefers to continue without you, you might want to consider doing a solo-run instead for the achievements. This way you can pick up the story anytime for your achievements.

Bugs: In multiplayer mode, the achievements recorded for you may be different from your friend(s)'. If so, you've gotta redo the chapter.

100% Achievement? Compared to Trine 2, this is a walk in the park. Guides are available.
Microtransaction? Nope!
Timer? None, at your own pace.
Children Friendly? Sure! Since it's multi-player, you can play with your children and progress together. No violence or obscene stuff.

In all my years of gaming, playing VR or fast games, have i ever felt motion sick. this game does that in its storybook level.
The jump from 2D to 2.5D is disorienting as hell. and for some reason they changed the move on rope for the ranger to scroll wheel from W anD D. W and d move you in space , so if you just played trine 1 and 2 muscle memory will kill you.

Kinda buggy but still a good time. Levels are incredibly pretty and fun to play, collectibles aren't as deviously hidden as in trine 2, and the music bangs. It's buggy yea, but we didn't run into anything game breaking. If you have the incredible ability to enjoy playing video games and not hone in on the details this will be worth the money.
Common things I see in the negative reviews for this are that it's too short and the 3D's "not good". Firstly I think the 3D makes depth perception a bit weird at times, but not at key points, so it didn't ever really matter i swung my sword too early or whatever. I think the 3D was a welcome addition to spice up the formula of the series. Secondly I'd much rather play 5 hours of this than slog through 15 hours of the last game which all felt the same at the end of the day.
For me this was def worth the 5€.

Pros:
The graphics were high quality as always however the third dimension was a pain in the ass to navigate.
Fairly easy to get full achievement completion.
New and interesting gameplay mechanics for Zoya and Amadeus when compared to the last games.
Great soundtrack.

Cons:
Zoya's mechanics are super buggy sometimes and some objects in the game randomly decide to bug out in a way that its more difficult to complete a level.
Adjusting video settings requires you to restart the game.
Brigthness settings are only available in fullscreen mode.
While in co-op, we were randomly disconnected from the host. on multiple occasions.

Unlike the last two games, I will not be replaying this one.

It's a shame that this game got completely outshadowed by Trine 2 & 4, and has a lot of bugs at its own.

I would say it is worth trying out if you grabbed it in a discounted bundle. You can see the love put into the game by visual design team but the gameplay and system are quite lacking. Game is also a bit short compared to 2 & 4, but I would say the platforming, puzzles and battles pose more challenges.

Amazing series with beautiful visuals but there always has to be a black sheep in the family. It's not only about the perspective, which is very not intuitive in many situations, but also about pure mechanical aspect of the game, for example i liked these moments with Thief where u could hang on rope and swing urself to the sides so finally u could jump on the object above you, but here with additional dimension it's nearly impossible to achieve it with first attempt. The idea of 3d perspective in Trine is great, but it needs a little different approach in my opinion. Anyway if you want to finish whole series, you can't cheat on this one, better take it as a challenge.

Well... unexpected 3D and bad level design seemed like a bold excuse for a bad review at first. I feel pretty naive about it now. The main issue is a lack of true in-game depth perception which lead to huge problem with falling off the field of play area. And why exactly is hitting an enemy with a summoned box is such a huge problem? You simply never know where this box is in relation to the enemy. And... well... on the top of that there a very poor and poorly thought-through level design and WTF?! broken ending compared to the previous editions... this is to say nothing about the bugs. The developers had been trying to bring something new, but ended up quickly throwing together random pieces to meet the deadlines (e.g. lots of castrated single-character challenge mission). Skills were omitted. Secrets were omitted. Common sence were omitted. Just flash this part of the classic franchise down the drain.

I feel like this is the most controversial trine game but I enjoyed it and the problem being its very short and kinda unfinished? at least I have no idea how the story concludes 6/10

captainsam2k

I'd be lying if I wasn't a little disappointed that the game was unfinished, but I can't really pin that on the fault of the developers seeing as they couldn't have known how much of a financial drain developing the game into a 3D engine would be. I can't say I hate the 3rd game, I love it, I just really wish there was more. I know that so far as till now there have been no plans for a DLC to finish the story, and if that's the case forever that's quite alright, but I do hope if anything, we at least get something to round out the story, be it another game or a better planned for DLC. I recommend this game if you absolutely need more Trine in your life, but expect that fix to be sated only so long, but I do also recommend it for any tried and true fans who wish to see the story through as it's been going.

I wanted to like this game. But the not-so-stellar gameplay does not leave a good impression on me. Still, I did my best to just give it a shot and enjoy the story.

Even that didn't help as my computer constantly crashed after a short time, despite lowering the settings multiple times. It got so bad that my computer stopped recognizing my graphics card for a while.

All in all, a terrible game, can't even play it. 0/10.

Trine again but in 3D...thanks, but we don´t want! Total chaos in all maps, short story, shards blackmail for main mission progress. This was a step in wrong direction. But Trine 4 is again in 2D, so I appreciate effort and returning in classic and great original concept.

pipi long stocking

i'm a completeist , so i wanted to finish this game before starting trine 4. loved 1 and 2, but this 3d stuff is good in concept but awful in execution. cant count how many times i died because of bad angle/camera mechanics and simply not knowing what you were going to step on and where the edges of the map were. for the first time in the Trine series, i'm inclined to uninstall and move on to Trine 4. yes, i knew all about the bad reviews, and now unfortunately i have to say its a decent game, but a little too tedious, it neither does sidescrolling or 3d correctly rating it 5 stars out of 10. it should be sold for $0.50 USD and not any more, since it unnecessarily takes something more valuable from you, your time.

LetsPlayConan

A bit too short but tries to get out of the comfort zone, experimenting with the 3D perspective and it is much better.
There are very, very creative levels that blew my mind. And the graphics and the characters are a chef's kiss - really. The characters are more defined and I like the color pattern of the world.

Trine 3 continues the Trine-saga in a rather unsatisfying way. I was constantly struggling with the 3D elements and somehow bad PC controls. What was supposed to be happy playing led often to frustration. The game mechanics also lead you to unwanted grinding since you have to gather a lot of "Trineangles" to advance the game. So in total, not a complete miss, but a kinda big disappointment after the first two Trine games.

I mostly recommend this game for the story. It is very short. I dislike the 3D aspect they tried in this one, it makes a lot of the old controls much more difficult and depth perception is sketchy sometimes. It was really jarring to switch from 2D to 3D. Overall it is a good game, and it is gorgeous.

I really wish I could say that the complaints are exaggerated and that Trine 3 is still a good game in a great series... but I can't. The 3D is REALLY bad. The camera angles are weird. If it was just a matter of aesthetics, the 3D would not matter but it drastically changes the game from a 2D puzzle game to a clunky platformer. Most of the "puzzles" in Trine 3 are drastically more simplistic and are solved by glitching through them or using the 3D to ignore them altogether (ie. fly around a barrier). Pretty much all of your deaths are because the camera angle is super far back or off-center and you accidentally fall off the edge. The game is not nearly as forgiving with death in this one and that death usually will send you back 5 minutes of gameplay. This doesn't sound like much but it adds up quickly. When you die you have to re-collect a lot of monotonous trines as well. It has some good things. While the 3D does detract from the art style, because they can no longer create endless picturesque backgrounds (they need to create a boundary), it is still a pretty game and has a unique look. The beaches are particularly beautiful. Ponteus is more useful in this game. Instead of being a useless until a fight, his glide makes him the most useful character in the game... though... the usefullness comes at the cost of the other characters being much less useful. Ultimately, even on sale, I don't think it is worth the buy. Go with Trine 2 or 4. Maybe look elswhere if you have played those. It Takes Two has a very similar concept and feel but is waaaay better, for example.

Trine is a relatively easy-going and light-hearted game that's great for teens and younger, or playing with friends over a few drinks in local or online multiplayer, which is where the game really shines. You need to work together to fight, platform and solve puzzles.

Lt.Bladewing
Lt.Bladewing

I played the first and second part of the series and let me tell you this one is the worst.

Because of the game's 3D nature you can't really use the archer and have to resort to using the knight. Remember the cool things you could do in the first two? Like conjuring different items? Yeah? Well you can only conjure a box and you can't even levitate your friends.

But let's check some pros and cons:

Let's start with a few pros:
-The 3D environment is gorgeous.
-The voice acting is great once more

Basically that's it. That's the only good thing I personally found in this game.

Now on to the cons:
-The 3D wouldn't be bad but the camera placement is awful and you can't get to key objectives because of this.
-The controls don't respond right
-The fights are frustrating except as the knight as I mentioned earlier.
-You liked talents? Well fuck you we didn't put any in this installment.
-There are a few boss fights and I won't mention them as to avoid spoilers but let me tell you Dark Souls feels less frustrating than the eyestrain that is a particular bossfight
-The game is short. Like very short. In only four hours I managed to finish it with a friend and the story still could have gone on with at least three missions
-You can't progress the main quest unless you collect items in an environment that you can barely walk around in
-Also the paper level? Hell. Get ready to say goodbye to your depth perception because it won't exist on that level.

Of course this is just some personal opinions but if like the series skip this and go to the forth one instead. This one isn't worth your money nor your time.

First off, I bought this game at a steep discount. So, for 70% off yes I'd recommend it, but for full price...it's iffy. As a player of previous and subsequent Trine games the 3D play is disappointing, but if this is your intro to Trine it's really not that bad. I can see why it doesn't meet many people's expectations, but it's a decent artistic getaway for a few hours.

Trine is now 3D so that means your worst enemy now is depth perception.
On the other hand all of that insufferable replaying-the-whole-level-because-you-missed-one-soul business has been addressed in this game so it's not so bad.
Very short game though.

I'm going to start off by saying I don't understand all of the hate this game gets. Now in 3d, Trine feels a bit different, and while I admit that's not always for the better, it's still a lot of fun and I have to applaud the developers for trying something new.

The game is amazingly fun, and the things I love most about Trine are still there. The magical soundtrack, the beautiful environments, the amazing voice acting all accompanied by a charming story. Just like with the previous games in the series, Trine 3 didn't fail to bring a smile to my face.

If you liked the previous games, just give it a go. At first the depth perception feels a bit off, and I think Trine does work better in 2.5d, but don't let that scare you off. It's still a great game

EDIT: After finishing the story my biggest complaint is that it's too short. It feels kind of unfinished which makes sense, considering they were apparently planning to release more levels but never did because of the poor reception. It's such a shame because more levels would have added so much to it

I 100% completed the game in 5.7 hours. This game at full price is a complete ripoff. The wizard and knight can legit break the game and fly over maps to the end by going out-of-bounds as well. If you are new to the Trine franchise, you can safely skip this garbage and go from 2 to 4 and not miss anything. I'd only buy this if it is on mega sale (70-80% off).

Trine 3 is a fun game with beautiful environments and addictive gameplay. It's a Short game, too: Beat it in less than 5 hours. Not nearly as good or as developed as Trine 2. It's playable, but clearly they never finished the end game. Still, it's worth playing your a fan of the series and it's heavily discounted.

Reecka Lorule

Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is a new adventure for the first time in full 3D. I like this game, but my opinion is divided.

The design is beautiful just like its predecessors. There are new and interesting gameplay mechanics for Pontius, Zoya and Amadeus, but the game is sometimes difficult to control because of the 3D environment. I mainly had trouble moving Zoya's grappling hook while pulling or pushing things and the same with controlling Amadeus' boxes.

It's a short game. After the final boss battle it was obvious the story wasn't done yet. It's a shame the story doesn't continue after it. I think there was a lot of potential for it. I liked the idea of Trine in 3D, but after having played the game, it's safe to say I prefer Trine in 2D.

AMK
AMK

I'm a big fan of the Trine series, but this is probably the weakest addition to the series. I'd recommend only for die-hard fans of Trine. For anyone else, stick with Trine 1, 2, and 4 first - then buy 3 if you absolutely need more Trine.

Here is where I think the game fails:
- They added a 3D element to what has always been (and goes back to) a 2D game. While I applaud the developers for trying something new, the implementation was more frustrating than interesting or fun. By far, the most common cause of death for me was my character running off a cliff even though I thought I lined them up well with their target. The depth perception in the game just doesn't work well. The frustration from this far outweighed any benefit.
- One of the best parts of Trine 1 and 2 was the incredibly beautiful background art. In hindsight, I think the developers were able to make it look so nice because it was just background art, the player never needed to interact with it. Now that they added a 3D element, the background is interact-able. As a result, the art has suffered. It isn't bad, but it isn't as breathtaking as the first two games.
- Collectibles (art and poems) were removed. Similarly, character levels were removed, as were character skills. This had the side-effect of making the puzzles SUBSTANTIALLY easier since the solution to all puzzles was a combination of using the Wizard's one cube or Zoya's grapple. In prior Trines, there was the anti-gravity field, platforms, multiple cubes, various types of arrows, etc.
- The game length was quite short compared to the other games. I think I got 10+ hours from Trine 2 and only got about 70% of the XP. In Trine 3, I got >95% of XP in about 5 hours.
- You can't go backward on some levels. Normally this isn't a big issue, but there is at least one level where there are multiple big 5 XPs right at the end of a segment. If you accidentally get too close to the end of the segment while trying to get the XP, you move to the next segment and can't go back to get the XP. Very frustrating.

Despite the flaws, there were some positives:
- The level design continues to be well done given limitations cause by the use of 3D and also lack of skills. The game somehow doesn't start to feel repetitive until the last location or two even though there really isn't much diversity in puzzles.
- I did like the single-character quests. One of the best parts of the Trine games is that there has always been multiple ways to solve any given puzzle. I like the additional (small) challenge of having to solve some puzzles with a specific character.
- Without going into spoiler territory, there is one level with art that is different than all the rest, and themed in a particular way. I did like the art of this level, though still preferred the art in Trine 1 and 2.

Best game out of the 4 Trine games so far. It is a pity that the story is cut short due to the developer running out of funds for this game as they attempted to do it in 3D. I really enjoyed this with my friends despite my poor internet connection back then which leads to frequent disconnections & missed achievements.

Still I really enjoyed it & that says something.
