While I loved most of the game, it got a bit too gruesome at times, especially on the bonus chapter. I think that the game would have been much better had they decided to leave more stuff open to the imagination, instead of trying to shock players through gore. Luckily, this is only done a few scarce times in the whole game, and the rest is thoroughly enjoyable. Not the most imaginative, coherent, or engaging story, but definitely one of the best hidden object games out there (leaning heavily on puzzles and not so much on hog scenes, at least in adventure mode, which I prefer). I'm a bit weary about how much more violent or gory stuff there will be on the sequel, but I already got it, and this one was mostly fine, so I'll probably check it out in the future.

Just sad that the third part has never been created.

Excellent characterization, good jump scares, fun and difficult puzzles.

The game has a lot of issues making it a below-average HOG:
* clickable areas don't always work, often you need to click something multiple times before game accepts the click
* story is really convoluted and unfinished (there's "part 2"), I still have only vague idea what's going on
* that code puzzle from bonus chapter is basically broken and I can see people wasting hours on it

It's playable, but there are so many better HOG games. And who plays like 100 of them, right? Just get a better one.

This game is truly riveting for its genre. The story is gripping, expertly written and put together. It can be unnerving in some scenes. The graphics are superb and graphic in some areas. (Keep in mind this a horror, psychological thriller.) The music score is superb. The voice acting is excellent and the cut scenes are perfectly placed.

Holly receives a letter in the middle of the night. It is from her twin sister Heather who Holly hasn't spoken to in years. The letter beckons Holly to come. Of coarse, the plea doesn't fall on deaf ears. Holly goes finding a mystery with each step that leads her down a path to what happened to her family. As Holly finds the clues left by Heather she senses a sinister shadow watching and following her every move. The more Holly uncovers the deeper the mystery becomes and more questions are answered as well as asked. As part of Holly's journey ends another one began as she uncovers more part 2 of this 3 part series.

I know on some game sights this game comes with warnings. There is a reason for this. This game is not for the faint of heart and does contain scenes that might be disturbing to some people. This is an mature (adult) audience oriented game because of its graphic contents. It is a parents' discretion to view the game contents before letting any (under aged) child of theirs play this type of game.

I do recommend this game (for mature audiences).

Excellent game. The story is thrilling and keeps you interested. Puzzles are ok, average difficulty. A must have for people who love this kind of adventure games where you have to find hidden objects. Part 1 is scary sometimes. It is one of those games in which you want to know more and more about what's happening, so you won't get bored at all.

Love this game! Super spooky and a very interesting story line. I highly recommend playing with headphones in and in a darker area if you are able. I've played this game a few times on my phone and just finished my first run through on pc and I still like it! Very much a puzzle game with critical thinking - kind of a find a piece here and it fits there kind of game. Part two is even better than part one with a smoother interface and better graphics. Highly recommend for any one who enjoys mystery game - I grew up playing Nancy Drew and although this is a little different - it's very good!

This ends on a 'TO BE CONTINUED' so be aware of that. Good game. Lovely animation etc. Not so much a HOG but more of an interactive sequence of events involving objects. Good story. Kind of annoyed that it ended with a 'to be continued' as it means you have to buy the second game which is sneaky.

This is a creepy game. From the music to the story to the characters. It's not too scary to enjoy which is what I've been looking for. The story is great. Full of mystery and twists, and keeps you wanting to learn what really happen. Watch out for the puzzles. They were tricky. I definitely had to move from expert to advanced to get a hint a time or two. Can't wait to continue to part two of this mystery. I want to know what HAPPENS!!!

Enjoyed this. It sets up a compelling mystery at the start, and creates a spooky atmosphere that works well and is about as scary as you can expect from the genre. It includes a good amount of material - I had about 4 hours for each playthrough. I recommend this game on its own merits.

However, it is only part 1 out of 3, and I found the sequel very weak by comparison. Part 2 was so tedious I'm not sure I'd bother playing part 3.

This game is good for its own sake, but if you want the complete story, you'll be in for the long - long, long - haul.

very enjoyable. I hate jumpscares (huge weenie alert) and am happy to confirm that this did not make me have a heart attack. Just a very well made, fun to play point & click. Beautiful scenes, occasional cut scenes, great music. Headphones absolutely on.

Thought I would have it set to hidden object but actually I really liked the escape setting! A few grammatical errors here and there, but literally who cares.

Literally my only qualm is that the hint doll is very close to the fast travel map, and I accidentally hit it and lost myself an achievement- rude!

tl;dr- game so good i bought part 2

The story line and the picture are scary! Despite that, the story makes me curious to finish the game immediately. Highly recommended for horror adventure game enthusiasts. After this, I will buy part 2 as I'm curious about the rest of the story.

This is simply one of the best hidden object games I've ever played. Beautiful graphics, great animated cutscenes, the whole thing looks amazing. The puzzles are nice and varied, and I never felt like I was doing a puzzle for the sake of doing a puzzle. Everything ties into the story, which is also gripping and creepy. I can't wait for more in this series. Fingers crossed for a True Fear 3.

Excellent hidden object game. 9/10 because nothing is perfect.

The hidden object scenes were clever, the story was good. I normally don't care about artwork, but thought the artwork was good. There was quite a bit of backtracking, which annoys some people. I usually like it, and in this game, it was all cohesive and there is a map, so I definitely didn't mind.

I'm not usually a fan of hidden object games, but the story line enticed me enough to give the game a chance. It ended up being a nice blend of a classic point and click with some minimal hidden object elements.

Fun story with just the right amount of jump scares and a decent soundtrack as well.

Play it with the headphones on in a dark room and it'll definitely add to the effect.

Worth a checking out.

I'm not much for the hidden item game but this was done really well and it's not like your typical hidden item game where it gives you a list and you find them...it's more of find what will work within that puzzle to find additional items. Sometimes its hard to put a how much love you have for game/ series into words. Those times no matter what you say/ type its just not enough, nor do it justice, but to having to move on to other reviews and other things I have to start somewhere. True Fear: Forsaken Souls series, in my opinion is the best hidden objects/ casual games that I've played on steam. Stand formula for a hidden object/ casual game - you walk from room to room picking up objects and solving puzzles to unlock a new room/ new areas. However for the most part is that most casual games the story plot is quite simple, which is fine - I am a gamer who loves story rich games, platforms, action, horror/thriller games and choice base games. If I want to lose myself into a story then I would go for Story rich games. I mainly go for casual games because I like testing my brain for the puzzles and work on problem solving.

However with this series the story is quite good. I would say its a mix of Horror/ Thriller/ Mystery. For first game it has a haunted house feel. You play as Holly who searches for her lost sister and a dark-hair girl figure shows up, and all the sudden we have a mystery to solve (I know I am being vague, sorry, but for people who haven't played this game/series who are willing to give it ago, I don't want to give away to too many spoilers for the first game.) The first game is just a small part to a bigger mystery. As you play through the game and bonus episode you find journal notes that start to fill you in what happen, what they did in Dark Falls Asylum before a tragic event.

You don't get all the answers, you have to play all 3 parts, but each part leaves you wanting more. There are also some jump scares and cutscenes with scares. The music is on point, there are few piano tracks (waltz) that send shivers down my spine as well to eerie background music. The puzzles are very entraining. There are flashing lights and static video images/footage so people who are sensitive to flashing lights please be aware or skip this games. Would i recommend these games and will I come back and play them more? YES 100% I'm hooked I can't wait for part 3.

Music / Audio: 10/10

Story plot: 10/10

Horror/Thriller elements: 10/10

Would I come back to play it again again (not just the one time)? YES

Would I recommend this game and series? 100% YES

This is a wonderful puzzle game that draws you in with a deep supernatural mystery. While it has traditional puzzles as well as hidden object puzzles, the latter can be changed to a different puzzle style if HOP are not your thing. It can be a little confusing at times where you have to go and what you can do and you will get stuck A LOT. Music is top notch and the locations are amazingly detailed.

This is an EXCELLENT game in the hidden object/puzzle adventure genre. I was definitely skeptical going in, because I feel like the creepy little girl trope has been done to death, but this game's story was very intriguing, and I immediately bought the sequel at full price when I finished part one. (I'm eagerly awaiting the third installment now).

This game is something special, because it kind of straddles the line between your typical hidden object game and a full-fledged point-and-click adventure game. The game play format will be familiar to hidden object fans, but the great story and the more realistic settings make it feel more like a classic adventure game. This is a rare balancing act that most other games seem to fail at.

As for the fear-factor, it was nice to be able to enjoy a game with a genuinely creepy atmosphere without having to shoot your way through droves of monsters or run and hide at a moment's notice. There are definitely jump scares, but fellow scaredy-cats can rest assured that you cannot die in this game.

Definitely recommend for those who enjoy a dark, intriguing story and loads of interesting puzzles!

Frogfather

One of the biggest problems with adventure games is the hidden object element and how it disrupts the narrative. You're following an entertaining story and have to break off to find a dial telephone, a pineapple and a roll of duct tape. True fear gets round this quite well to the extent that you hardly notice the hidden object scenes as such.

The puzzles too fit naturally into the narrative and are intuitive enough that it's rarely necessary to resort to the help button. The interactive map is invaluable although one minor complaint is that the help button is very close to the map and on several occasions I triggered help by accident.

IMHO adventure games live or die by their story and True Fear is one of the best I've come across; not 100% original, but very well executed. There's always a sense of inevitability in where you're heading next. I'm definitely playing part 2 next and am looking forward to the release of part 3.

Wow, what a fantastic game. 6 1/2 hours total time including bonus chapter.

It goes beyond a typical HOG by incorporating an extensive story line & adventuring type puzzles to figure out. Light on actual HOG puzzles, more focus on story. Love the creepy theme.

My only beef is in the HOG scenes. You would need to find "teapot" and there would be a 2 teapots, so you don't know which to click on. I don't think this game has the acheivement "find all items without a misclick", (or maybe it does), but I could not complete any of the HOG scenes without a misclick because of this.

But all in all, this game stands above the heap in a sea of HOG's and I totally recommend it!

This is a wonderful hidden object game, definitely one of the best that I have played so far on Steam. The atmosphere is very well done, and the challenges are diverse enough for the gameplay to not feel stale throughout the experience. I feel that this series does make a genuine effort at a good story, while eliciting a nice feeling of atmospheric horror. Also, the quality of its cutscenes makes this stand out for production value. If you like this, I can almost guarantee that you will enjoy the second one as much, if not more!

Feels like the wonderful hybrid of an adventure game as well as a hidden object game. It is one of those you could sit and play for hours without getting bored or frustrated. Definitely many great horror moments and a very engaging story line. Does not feel like your typical hidden object game because there aren't random items you have to pick up... the items that you look for as far as "hidden object" are actually used to solve puzzles throughout the game. You have to play this one in order to understand Part 2. I cannot wait for Part 3 to be released.

It's ridiculous how much I enjoy this series. In order to be relatively biased (cause I'm like that), this lil gem suffers from the same fate as all great point n click/moon logic strat puzzle games we all enjoy; once you've played through it once, you will remember all the fun and frustration you had before. That out of the way, I loved the programmer's music, puzzle solving, and story-telling. I was engaged in the totality of the adventure. Granted, the infamous bonus chapter-door puzzle code was infuriating, but for anyone looking to lose a day or a solid afternoon with a great lil adventure, I highly recommend it. You may want to wait until it's on sale, but that only adds to your appreciation of this solid lil thing. Well done, Goblinz!!

True Fear is not only a really good Hidden Object Game, but the story is good and it is engaging. While it is portrayed as a horror game, there are only a few jump-scares in it. It is for the most part a good thriller verging on horror. I don't particularly like scaring myself, so take it from me; don't worry about the horror-part. I've played quite a few other puzzle games, as well as Hidden Object Games, and found this to rank near the top. It is not unlike the first Enigmatis game, but a lot better. Can't wait for Part 3.

bluelazer7427
bluelazer7427

Great game. Not quite convinced that it's "genuinely scary" but it's certainly spooky and is worth your time.

From an interface standpoint, this game is essentially identical to any Artifex Mundi game (think Enigmatis, and all the other games made by that company.) The animation, art style, shading, layout, even the symbols for "use a tool" and "examine" are the exact same. To be clear, this is not a bad thing. It's so similar that I'm convinced this game was made by people who used to work there (I tried to do research but couldn't find a connection).

The story is where this game really shines. It's clear the developers have a deep respect for point-and-click horror games, as there are multiple nods and references to Scratches, Dark Fall, and other classic games. All too often, games of this type are either SO mysterious/ambivalent that nothing makes sense, or SO simple that you can predict what's going to happen in the first 30 minutes (looking at you, Enigmatis 2...) The plot of True Fear is complicated enough to keep you guessing and never let you feel like you already know what's going to happen, but it's also presented in a logical and comprehensible format so you actually know what's going on.

It's not quite a hidden-object game in the Artifex Mundi sense, but there are plenty of puzzles and challenges to keep you interested. I'd rank it on the easier side in terms of difficulty. I beat it in about 7 hours without using hints or a walkthrough, and I'm not a genius. There were a few places where I got a little stuck and had to spend some serious brainpower to figure out a solution, but there were very few puzzles that truly frustrated me.

All in all, I wasn't scared by this game, but I had a great time with it. I've already purchased the sequel and am excited to start that next.

A good point and click/puzzle horror game. Here's my personal opinion on this game
Positive aspects:
(+) Good horror atmosphere & OST it can sent shiver down to Ur spine.
(+) Interesting puzzles & HO scene, not too easy & not too hard.
(+) Cutscene is terrifying enough.
(+) The game doesn't really depend on jumpscare ideas to build the horror, but the story development itself.

Negative aspects:
(-) 7-8 achievement is bugged since 2020, I guess? So 4 achievement hunters, it's not for U.
(-) It's still to be continued and maybe will never finished.

Found the solution of the bugged achievements, it's here:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/440420/discussions/0/3012305144376218349/

Forget the bugged achievement, my final score for this game is 8,5/10.

Wasn't sure at first about this game - the art is a little rough and hard to find objects but you get used to it and the story and atmosphere sucks you in. Some of the loopholes in terms of having to break glass when you have a hammer and yet the forced solution is an axe, for example, can be a little annoying but you can forgive this when the puzzles and quantity of make this very appealing. Achievements are bugged and I hate having to play for 3 hours just to unlock one but overall a solid performance.

Took me longer than expected to review TFFSP1, but here I go!

The story gets more intriguing as you play (even more in the final parts)
The soundtrack couldn't be better
The cutscenes make me look away to not get scared
Some puzzles and HOS are ok, some not so much...

I also want to add a personal opinion. Some people are a bit... impacient about the release of Part 3. Goblinz was a no show in Facebook for a whole year. Then, last December, they made a comeback. Some thought there would be no Part 3, but for some reason, something told me to just wait, that they would surprise us, and they did! Sure, the game is taking longer to be lunched, but is it so hard to wait for a hopefully worthy conclusion?

Anyway. Part 1 left me with many questions, Part 2 awaits me!

How does this get positive reviews? The "puzzles" are ridiculous.

Examples ("Spoilers" for "puzzles"):
There's a refrigerator with scotch tape on the handle. Instead of just opening the stupid thing or unwrapping the tape you have to find a box cutter to cut the tape off
There is a pile of screws under some sand or something. Instead of just picking them up you have to use a sieve to shift the sand away
There is a warhammer looking thing stuck in a broken TV. I tried to remove it but was told that I needed rubber gloves to not get electrocuted. Maybe unplug it?

Who keeps a spare fuse for their fusebox in their locked china cabinet next to the TV?

True Fear: Forsaken Souls Part 1 provides a compelling story and atmosphere for fans of horror and point-and-click genres. While the gameplay and plot keep players interested, some pacing issues and lack of horror elements weaken the title. The game will challenge players to rely on intuition since various puzzles make up the core gameplay. The variety adds diversity to the gameplay while allowing players to feel accomplished upon completion.

pretty good story, that big fish style HOP process of "young woman (with the dead pan faces ) finds out some horrible stuff about her past" but reasonably well done scares, Obviously the element of a guy making games based on what the female demographic seem to like. that out of the way, i like that you dont have do overly contrived HOP bits , they are replaced by HIdden object Processes. which is less like a clutter . i prefer that. again, it s a choice. you can get the clutter. meanwhile the story s quite nice development makes some of the pixelhunt and process weird. i m not spolinmg anything by saying the grandfathers massively dark secret is a glass that you can fill with water to make a compass. the staff have humour, the silliness of ornaments and emblems to open hidden cupboards ( and where to find them) does get ridiculed in various places. pretty decent .give it a go. off to go play part 2. i m sure i have better things to do, but that s what these games are for. keeping you hooked and binging. 6/10

I came into this game with no expectation except that it might be more spoopy than my usual HOG's. What I wasn't prepared for was the amazing atmosphere and the lush backgrounds with items lovingly crafted in a consistent haunting aesthetic. I was glad the animated scares were used sparingly so I could immerse myself in exploring and solving the puzzles. The cinematics definitely heightened the experience and tension of the game story and by far the best cohesive HOG I've played to date. Sadly the sequel sounds like it might've been too ambitious and a tangent to the original but am glad I got to experience this masterful first game from the small developer. Worth buying at full price.

Fabulous hidden object game, which you als can also play without any hidden object puzzles by switching to adventure mode in the menu option. Fun minipuzzles varies from easy to challenging. A entertaining story, that ends in a cliffhanger (to continue in part 2, I presume) I love the fact that this game is a point and click game and is fully playable with a mouse (no gamepad needed).

As a 100% acheivement hunter I finished the whole game in expert mode in 2 sittings. One for the main game and one for the bonus game. The expert mode means no hints or help of the map. Luckely, the hidden object puzzels are easily recognized by a fuzzy spot in the scenery. Especially handy as you play a hidden object game somethimes more than once.
I got my 100% achievements in a total gameplay of 8 hours.

I've played my fair share of point & click games and I can truly say that this game is SCARY with some genuinely creepy moments! As a sort of veteran of the genre by now, I can tell you the most major problem the games suffer is getting stuck on puzzles. Well, I'm happy to announce True Fear is great at puzzles and has a hint system just in case! (in the guise of a creepy doll with glowing red eyes when the hint is available) The story follows Holly Stone, who receives a letter from her twin sister, Heather. They haven't been in contact in years and Holly is requested to drive to their childhood home.

Pros
+intuitive puzzles
+compelling story
+creepy moments
+atmospheric soundtrack
+cinematic movies
+plot twist
+leaves you wanting more

Cons
-some items are nonsensical with context of puzzles

Overall this is a must buy for anyone looking to get into the genre or fans of horror! I streamed Act 3 with some friends and we all had a really good time. The ending was intense for everybody and I can't wait to stream Part 2!!!

It has many of the same features as a hidden object game without actually having to search for hidden objects. Playable and somewhat enjoyable though.

Made me jump a few times. One of the best hidden object games I've played in a long while. Def recommend and will be continuing the story with part 2.

The achievements suck - Play 3 hours non-stop, play on expert, play without stopping, etc. The worst one is that you have to obtain all achievements in one profile and you CANNOT reuse a profile to play again. How stupid is that?!

The game is very good, for an HO game.

So many reviews saying this game is good, but I couldn't help but laugh while I played it.
It's very much like the movie The Room. So bad that it's good.
