Overall I love this game, and as long as you're OK with trying portions of it more than you might think is reasonable, then I recommend it. The story really is worth the frustration, which I'm starting to understand is perhaps intentional and with the immersive theme of the game.

There are some bugs that are worth mentioning based on my recent "stress" with chapter 4:
1) I was rushing through and pressed tab when picking up the component in the library and it didn't register, so I couldn't pass the level, cuz it was gone from the table and I didn't have it.
2) I was exploring the water room and I turned all the 8 water valves, but then after going to the control room, I could not turn the already turned valves, so I had to take a stress hit.
3) When I got attacked by the library, I got teleported to the other side of the map.

(Now that I got through Chapter 4, I'm gonna stop being a baby and change my rating to a thumbs up)

now, this game is really freaking good, amber soft put sooooo much time into this!!! since it is early access, here are a few tips that can maximise it to its full potential! first it would help if you could somehow install a setting that operates its motion blur if you can, and also, if you can, a bit more game play in the third chapter, but not tooo much as that will stray it from being a claustrophobic and tense puzzle experience. 1 more thing, now this could be just me, but i played the demo and there was that cyborg thing running towards me for a second in chapter 1, it scared the life out of me! but i did not get that in the early access, so as much as i hated it, it was ingenious, if you took it out, if you can, it would make chapter 1 more scary, but can you also add a few more random scares in the second chapter, just to keep me on my toes! now im sorry this sounds like alot, but these are just a few suggestions to add IF YOU CAN. but this is one of the best horror games IVE EVER PLAYED!!!! if u somehow get this, please comment back many thankes

The first 4 nights that are out at the moment are by far amazing and have a lot of great scares. The
Sleep sequences are really fun and the storyline for the dreaming parts is outstanding one issue I have with the game is I personally found the 4th night a bit too challenging for the sleeping phase but really fun I do hope the game can come out of early access shortly truly one of my favourite horror games

Ok so first of all, this game actually fucked with me mentally, which almost never happens with horror games. The nighttime segments probably freaked me out the most because they take place in your own bedroom, which is supposed to be the place where one feels the most safe. These segments are similar to fnaf but seriously fucking scary.

The jumpscares aren't crazy or anything but a couple of them did actually get me. If you really hate the feeling of being chased, ABSOLUTELY get this game.

Really cool sci-fi horror setting with interesting and cryptic story/lore. Really good game for streaming.

Overall 9/10 highly recommend

I don't want to spoil anything but if you want spooks and well written story in a horror game you should consider to buy and download this game. Personally I do think it is worth the money but that's just me.

I must say that this game was pretty good. I played it through in stream and we had quite fun for how long the early access lasted. I am looking forward for the last 2 nights but I hope there is more of those panic running sessions and anxious door closing like situations instead of those problem solving puzzles. Sneaking around monsters in these kind of games is also good thing and it keeps up the horror. Especially when I get frustrated in puzzle solving in horror games it takes the horror away completely. After the second night the thank god the atmosphere came back

This game is like a much better, well made, and a well designed version of Five Nights of Freddy's. The creatures are much scarier especially when you are getting chased because it literally makes you anxious as hell. The story is pretty interesting as you discover part of your memory after you complete each night. This game will bring you a fun, horrifying night if you choose to play.

This game combines a story line with a small mini-game of five nights at freddies which could be strongly improved with new nights. I also would say a good way to get that mini game more involved to have a dream state be interupted from time to time during the night as it would bring more involvement to the game when roaming around the area. there are much more things i would add to this game but not enough for this review but their is a lot of potential! i would also change it to where the first night u only have the devil creature as the one during sleeping then both of the creatures in the second one so u can add 1 creature to every new night while giving them attributes and differ weaknesses such as 1 afraid or repelled by the dark while 1 can only be scared by staring at it in the dark and some such ideas could be implemented. however it is a 8/10 rating as there is not much content atm hopefully to be continued. Some people may also just like the five nights at fred system and mode so maybe think about a secondary idea for that possibly.

There are some terrifying moments in just the first five minutes. There's a stark contrast between the two gameplay phases in Try To Fall Asleep--being awake and dreaming--and this keeps it fresh.

My favorite thing is how it simulates the morphing shapes and images you see under your eyelids; obviously, when we shut our eyes we don't just see a dark void. This detail is frightening and immersive, because you're never just staring at a black screen.

The only problem we've come across in Try To Fall Asleep--and this might have actually killed the game for us--is that it's too unforgiving. In horror games, it's a TERRIBLE idea to send players all the way back to the very beginning of a large set piece if they fail. This is especially true if nothing is randomized. There is no worse way to punish players for failure.

(EDIT: the developer has fixed that last problem; besides that, I have no gripes about Try To Fall Asleep. It seems like it could easily be the next big indie horror game.)

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE REVIEW! Review is subject to change!

The game itself is amazing, and admittedly I love to scare myself with horror games. The problem lies in being unable to turn off motion blur. The blur makes me dizzy and induces headaches for me. It also causes my computer to lag as I move my mouse, making the game harder to navigate at night. If the devs could please find a quick hotfix or post a solution somewhere I would be happy to make this a positive review.

EDIT: Thanks, Devs, for listening to my request. Looking forward to expanding options :)

I'm having so much fun with this game! The puzzles are challenging enough without being impossible, and varied enough that I don't get bored. One of the aspects of the game I appreciate is how the puzzles make sense within the larger story, which is intriguing and keeps me curious about what is happening to John. Trying to Shut Your Eyes has NEVER Been so Terrifying!

Through three nights of Try to Fall Asleep my eyes have been transfixed to my computer screen and my body has been quaking in my chair. The tension that this game creates is palpable throughout the entire experience and doesn't let up until the sun rises at 7:00 am. But even then there are horrors that lurks in the recesses of your vision. you never feel safe and I love that aspect of the game.

The game is split up into two portions of the Night. During the first part to partake in the games namesake, you try to fall asleep. But what a trial it is to achieve such a feat! As you attempt to lull yourself to sleep monsters creep outside your window, lurk at the foot of you bed, and scamper down the hallway trying to elevate your stress levels causing a panic attack and your ultimate demise. Your only companion in this portion of the night is AB, a cybernetic alarm clock that tells you have to stave off the beasts and hasten your progression to your dreams. But even he has an unnerving air about him that keeps me itching to uncover more secrets as more parts of this game are released.

Then there is the second portion of the night which is the dream state. In this segment, you are trying to unravel the secrets locked within your mind regarding your work with the Revivel company, but the beings that haunt you prior to your nightmares also stalk you here. Within the dream state you discover different tidbits of important info as you play horrifying mini games, chase sequences, and chilling rounds of hide and go seek with the aforementioned monsters. This is is a nice way to stray from the stationary aspect of the first half of the night and keep things fresh and engaging. And the story that is piecing itself together going from night to night is also keeping me on the edge of my seat and thirsty for more!

8/10

An enjoyable experience that has a FNAF mechanic for the first part of each night and a mid 2010s free horror game vibe. However, that is only for the first night. The stress mechanic reminds me of Amnesia but more deadly in this case. I'd recommend this if you're looking for an interesting story that will give you a few scares.

I love what I have played of the game! It has a pretty scary background with good atmosphere.

However, that being said, I'm having a bit of trouble. I went into the game the first time, and it worked perfectly, but now, when I go into the game, it crashes before I can get to the dreaming section of the first night...

Please let me know if you have any idea on how to fix this!

A very unique game and unique story. Your Flight or Fight response will be tested to the limits. I love horror games but I am generally not scared at most of whats out there. This however, is generally creepy, scary, and downright thrilling. It is best to be played with headphones to really capture its true essence. Nights 1 and 2 are the scariest! I would recommend to the casual player and to the hardcore horror fans. You won't be disappointed!

Pretty fun game! I've ran into quite a few bugs though but I can tell that so far, with what I did manage to get to play, I would highly recommend it and I believe the finished product will be amazing. I was truly spooked, me and my twitch stream enjoyed it. There was a little bit of lag issues/jitter but it wasnt anything to major. I had issues with mostly the second night that lead me to not get the chance to even play the third night. For whatever reasons each time I got to the dream, I would crash picking up one of the notes. The first time it was the first note, the second time was the last note. I believe I also crashed during the first night once, maybe twice but I really dont hold it against the game, it is still in beta.

I would still recommend this game even with these things because it really does bring out something different then other horror games. Usually im not scared easily of most horror games but this one was pulling it off really well, especially with the quick thinking on the spot you have to do, everytime you grab hold of an object in your dream. I also did really enjoy the bedroom feel that we had to deal with. It did remind of fnaf to a certain extent, which I dont think is bad at all. It was scary were it had to be. The guy that chases you always made me uncomfy which is something I do want to feel in a horror game.

Hoping that the crashing will eventually get fixed and that eventually I can finish it, especially when it gets fully released.

Right off the bat, impressive combination of jump scares and ambient horror that was good enough for me to let out a scream unpleasant to human ears, and at the same time keep me excited enough to want to play another round (after a breather of course). Played almost three hours, and I love it! The game pulls you into a sense of concentration, then slaps you in the face with a ghoulish jump scare. The only thing I can suggest is allowing a port where I can plug in a blood pressure monitor so the game can track my stress level when I'm playing. Good job so far, very excited for the finished product :)

This game needs so much work. The game itself is good for screams, but it crashed 5 times during a 3.5 hour stream and considering the game was released over a year ago this should have been fixed by now. Even reducing the graphics quality dramatically as per the "Support" thread didn't help. Will be requesting a refund. If the glitches are ever fixed then it would be worth the cost but not as it is.

(This review is spoiler-free. I hope. I tried my absolute best to spoil nothing.)

A genuinely scary game with a highly interesting story, Try To Fall Asleep is a good pick with two main types of gameplay; the 'try to fall asleep' phase and freeroam (for the most part) dream phase with a variety of different tasks thus far.

The freeroam dream phases are also highly forgiving in general, not forcing the player back to the 'try to fall asleep' phase when the player inevitably dies but rather back to the start of the dream phase, with the especially helpful exclusion to this rule in dream phase 3, which has two main 'stages'. If the player fails during stage 2 of dream phase 3, they will not be kicked back to the start of the dream phase, but rather at the start of stage 2.

The difficulty curve for the game in general feels rather smooth, albeit the game doesn't feel very difficult and the dream phases lack any randomization so the replayability for the dream phase is lowered, but this in no way makes it entirely unreplayable. (Edit 4/19/2021, Night 4 includes (at least, i believe, could be wrong) a slight amount of randomization when it comes to placement of one or two objective items, but this does not deduct any points.)

The same cannot be said (in my opinion and in a good way) about the 'try to fall asleep' phase, as it is inherently more random and less predictable, leading to a somewhat higher replay value than the dream phase. The 'try to fall asleep' phase fortunately does not suffer from unfair situations that screw the player over (from experience thus far, no issues getting past nights first try) and cause a night reset.

The only true 'flaw' I can find for this game is that the 'try to fall asleep' phase is not very difficult and rather easy at times, although I am absolutely certain that the difficulty will continue to climb as more nights are added by the developers.

In its current state, I can absolutely recommend this game at its $10 pricetag, and perhaps even higher, even though not all of the nights (as of 4/19/2021) are available yet. My personal score for this game is 8.5/10; a high score for a genuinely good game, even though some content is not here yet. (easily forgiven since this game is early access, so no deductions for that)

Edit [4/19/2021]: This review still stands after the release of Night/Dream 4. In fact, I have increased my rating for this game from 8/10 to 8.5/10. Well done, devs!

It is my pleasure to be writing a review for an early access game and it was my pleasure to play it, so here are my thoughts on the game. I'll go cons then pros.

Cons

The first thing that came to mind was that when you are experiencing your dreams but not hallucinating which is when you can increase your stress level which is bad, hallucinations of creatures randomly run at you at some points but it doesn't do anything to your stress level. It just makes the screen white for a split second when they reach you. It's kinda pointless so I'm not sure why it happens. Another thing is when you are trying to fall asleep, the lamp you use to decrease your stress breaks way to quickly, they kinda fix this in level 2 but not much. The final thing is that when you hide under the bed it looks a bit silly.

Pros

If your like me and you like to be scared this is it. It's no FNAF where it's scary the first couple of times but then it's not afterwards, the way the game makes it feel like YOU are the one hiding, YOU are the one who should be petrified, YOU are stuck with THEM not the other way round, it is terrifying and I love it. No spoilers but the mystery you are trying to uncover both about your past and the evil company is Thrilling and I can't wait for night 4. The environments are big, well designed and easily navigable (for me at least) the controls are responsive and the mini games thrust you into the horror with no preparation leaving YOU to SURVIVE. I love how it works and this game has great potential, it's really cheap too so I think you should get it when you can. This is a great game for anyone who loves the horror genre.

The idea of the game is very unique and interesting and that is what makes it stand out from other horror games, I think other game developers should take note from this one.

First off, lets have a look at each and every reviewers time played... notice anything?? NOT ONE PERSON HAS OVER AN ANEMIC 10 HRS OF PLAY!!! Its a real high level of replay-ability right??

2nd, its alright however over a dozen times AT LEAST after wasting i dont know 20+ minutes trying to sleep on the third night i finally get to sleep to wake in a different room talking to Daisy on the phone after the phone call i can walk in all directions but suddenly the mouse just all of a sudden doesnt do jack s**t! no turning what so ever. But really its a nice picture hanging on the wall!! IDGAF about the stupid picture on the wall id like to get the f**k out of the room!!! Really damn stupid!!

Short review: amazing game, would suggest.

Definitely an amazing game, would 100% recommend it. It's really, really effective at building tension and doesn't rely on jumpscares for cheap horror.

The game is split into two parts: trying to fall asleep (who could've guessed it), and dreaming.

In the falling asleep segments, you just close your eyes, try to sleep, and pretend the horrifying hallucinations aren't attempting to send you into cardiac arrest. You need to balance your time spent awake, reducing stress, with the time spent actually attempting to fall asleep. And you need to do all of this by 4am. The best part is that whilst trying to sleep, you can't see. You don't know when a hallucination will jump out at you from the side of your bed, forcing you to take safety in the blankets and hope they go away.

[As a warning, I may spoil parts of the Dreaming sequences from here on out. For a TL;DR, they're completely different and see you completing little minigames as you collect your objective, all of which are bloody terrifying. Still a great game, still suggest.]
Now, the dreaming sections are an entirely different game entirely. As of writing, Night 4 has just been released and I've played through all 4 available nights. There are different minigames you must do to progress through the game- for example, on Night 1 you must complete a series of minigames for each fuse collected (Flee to the Exit, Close the Doors, Follow the Light, Escape, and Flee to the Exit (part 2)- disclaimer, these are not the official names). Night 2 sees you exploring Pinetree Island, with the minigame to follow a floating light that flies ahead of you every time you pick up a page. They're all vastly different from each other, and all amazing to play through. The atmosphere in this game is spot-on and I adore it.
These Dreaming sequences can get slightly repetitive if you play each night a lot, however this is hardly an issue as you don't usually *need* to play each night more than once (unless, of course, you fail). My only gripe comes with Night 4's minigame in the water room- there's not really a reason for it being there. There's no note or radio part, just a terrifying reaction as you're thrust unsuspectingly into a minigame. Doesn't take away from the fear of it- in fact, I found myself cursing as I panicking and tried to figure out what to do, eventually realising too late where the valve handles were and failing.
But don't worry- if you fail once, you don't need to restart the entire Night all over again. Each Dreaming sequence with minigames has a level of stress- Nights 1 & 2 have 3, while Night 4 has 5. Every time you're caught, or fail a minigame, your stress increases, and only after you've capped out do you perish. Another thing I like is the ability to replay just the Dreaming sequences of a Night- no need to fall asleep over and over if you've already done so.

Finally, one thing I absolutely love is the story- whilst on the surface it may seem like a typical "big corporation bad" story, it's surprisingly effective and really good. Night 4 in particular was pretty emotional and actually showed off different sides to each character that I loved. Plus, the notes detailing a scientist's, well... I'll leave it unspoiled, but the notes are really well written and the voice acting is top notch.

So, yeah, I love this game. It's really, really good and I can't suggest it enough for anyone looking for a good horror experience. It doesn't hold your hand- you're taught the basic controls, given basic prompts through minigame titles, and then thrust into it headfirst. It feels really rewarding once you've figured things out, such as (SPOILER FOR NIGHT 4) in Night 4, where you need to stay undetected from creatures that track you through sound. Different bits of rubbish litter the ground, but only after dying to one of those monsters due to a mistimed crunch of glass did I realise that stepping on them actually made sound that alerted the monster, meaning for the rest of the Night I was constantly looking out for the monsters and where I was placing my feet.
I've only ever come across one bug in my 6 hours of playing (Nights 1-3, then again with Night 4 on the end), which was in the newest one. For an early access game, that's really impressive- especially considering how other, much larger games (hey Dead By Daylight) have been out of beta for years now and are still plagued with them.

Yeah, I don't know what more I can say. I love this game, and the devs even come into people's streams to see how they're doing, if they like the game, what can be improved, and help people who are a bit too stuck. Community engagement is pretty important in game development and it's actually really nice, as a consumer, to feel like you have a say in the game.

Great game, please buy, support these guys, it's so worth the money. I can't stress enough how good of an experience this game is.

The small team at AmberDrop has done an amazing job creating a nightmarishly creepy and atmospheric story with haunting environments punctuated by a spine tingling sound track. This little gem will make it difficult to fall asleep after playing it as many of the themes and visuals will be familiar to anyone who's ever had a nightmare. Well done!

I really love the concept of this game but I wish there was an option to turn off motion-blur. I literally can't see anything when in motion. Maybe I can fix that in the settings, but I'm not a pro-gamer like most people so I've tried to play with a few settings but nothing makes it better. There's also not an option to adjust mouse sensitivity so the mini high-stress games within the dreams are nearly impossible for me to see/navigate.

Very fun, especially for late at night. The sleeping part is probably a little more fun than the dream sequences.

this game pisses me off because on night 4 i was raped by a commie demon right as I was about to fall asleep on 100. 10/10

Honestly I never leave reviews but this game is so scary and the lore is very intriguing even though there's not that much yet (they're adding more in the full release). I've never been so invested in an early access game because this one is so interesting. The devs are doing such great work so far please keep it coming!

Game is very well made and put together. The developers did a very good job of making the game scary. Would definitely recommend.

Open game - can't use mouse - close game - refund

Don't buy this.

edit; seems to have a fix, though I'd have to try it in the future if I rebuy.

good game but the hide under blanket needs to be re added to night 1 to match the voice line of the robot and there should be a skip night and dream that you can use once and have to beat that night and dream to be able to use it again.
