Had loads of fun with this game some time ago. If you like tycoon games, try this one, but as other have mentioned, get it from somewhere else, this version is very buggy. Shame, really, as the game is so much fun.
Not recommending purely due to the Steam version being so glitchy

I should have read the comments previous. This is a great game I used to own in childhood and during the Cyber Monday say, I was extactic to purchase it again for a very cheap price. However, (and unfortunately), steam's version is actually poopy doo doo. Too many glitches. I heavily debated pirated the game after.

Game - Good
From Steam? - BAD BAD VERY BAD BAD NOT GOOD.

Steam has ruined this game. What was once an excellent and fun game to play has been made unplayable with Steam. Textures are missing, buildings are solid grey rectangles, it crashes consistently.

If you want to play this game, purchase from a different provider.

This was a nostalgic purchase on my part. I had this game on an old XP system many, many years ago, and it was fun back then.

The game has stability issues on my current system, which I'm going to have to figure out how to correct. It's not the best City Sim game there is, and you will probably be happier purchasing games made for today's systems.

To anyone considering buying this game: DON'T! Not only is it a waste of your money, but EVERYTHING about it is just awful. Bugged, messed up, and really annoying. I endured the tutorial, and two minutes in I left the game. THAT BAD, PEOPLE, IT WAS THAT BAD. Do yourself a favor; save ten dollars and buy ANYTHING other than this piece of garbage.

This game looks like a really fun game, and it has great potential, but the problems are just too many to ignore. This is not like most city building games. Your streets are already pre-defined and the buildings cannot be build just anywhere...only in the zones that they tell you that you can build in. The building selection is very small, and some of the buildings are glitchy at best. The transitions between water and land are unrealistic, and the maps have giant blank pieces in them. I have also experienced issues with the game crashing.

I did like how once you built a building, you could add extras to the building to enhance it's influence. However, this also means that you really can't build and move on... To maximize the effects of the buildings that you build, you need to customize every single one individually. Imagine doing this for hundreds of buildings that you build. Plus you need to moniter how each business is doing. This is far too much micromanaging for me.

This game had some good parts, but I would recommend passing on this one.

The game was made in 2006 so its expected to have a bit of trouble running, no it will never be fixed by the developers, but of course by removing a few files you can fix most, if not all of the major problems with running the game. Of course the graphics are also sub-par but in 2006 these graphics were the bomb tbh.
Besides that gameplay wise the game is quite fun, you run New York thats about the gist of it, theres a variety of buildings and building styles for each district not everything looks exactly the same, tbh I don't even think I got through every building the game has so that says something. You also get a bit of customization with the exterior of buildings, but this has a bit of a bug because some buildings will not let you place items in the right place or let you place items at all.

Overall, the game has problems but when you fix them the game is enjoyable just like any other city builder out there.

Tycoon City New York is a FANTASTIC game. HOWEVER, the steam version is NOT. DeepRed decided to yet again ruin customer trust by releasing a broken game (last was hospital tycoon) and now they did it once again. The original Tycoon City NY was great. Lots of fun, probably one of the most clever, funnest and in depth city builders of all time. It was huge, nice big open world with every citizen having their own personality and name, everywhere had something going on, etc.
Sadly, Deep Red decided to release a clearly corrupted version. Textures are missing, videos wont play when supposed to, character models are missing so when Terri Delany, the news girl, comes on to report news, its just her clothes floating in the air and her talking, but her body is missing. (I'm not kidding, look at screenshots)

This is totally unacceptable and should be pulled right away from steam. So many images, complaints and bad reviews and yet this is still here. Its broken, messy and no, it is NOT our hardware. Many of us tested the original CD Rom copy (I know I did!) and it works 100% like it did when it released. But this version was clearly ripped off a broken copy of the game somewhere in their offices and not even tested before it released, because this is not the same version as retail. First off, the 2006 version is 2 versions ahead of the one on steam, yet this was added to steam a few years ago. Clearly they released a beta version on steam and they didn't know (or did they?).

Please, for the love of everything, report this game, get it removed. Buy a used copy on ebay on CD. Its a FANTASTIC game, but this steam release IS NOT.

There is a patch online that is pretty hard to find, but was released by a fan who had the original game and patched the steam version. Its hard to find but you can look it up on moddb or something. Maybe it will appear.

Game is missing some textures and crashes often. If you want to trow money in the trash, this is the thing to buy,
It's unaccpetable that steam is selling a game with this problem. Not even the game studio will give you an answer....
This is why torrents exist...

Well, this one's not the developer fault.

Steam released an earlier version than the one that wa actually put on physical support,
all those years back.

Result? Missing textures, animations,...
Steam never corrected this (and for me It's too late for a refund).

Too bad the game is absolutely great...on physical version.

Although this game is one of my favourite tycoon type games, this version of it is just plain terrible.
I payed Just over $1 for it and still felt like I was ripped off. The game crashes consistantly, there are missing animations, models and textures.
Go out and buy a retail copy instead.

This is a great game!
For the ones fearing crashes: try this:

Delete the following folders:
ANIMS
MODELS

in your game directory/data/Art. They contain the broken files which cause the frequent crashes in the steam version. Deleting those will consecutively lead to an overall superior gaming experience.

I would like to recommend this game, for it is a nice and good feeling bussiness tycoon. If you can play it. Back in time i owned it and played it many hours, yet the steam version isn´t stable, crashes often. So often, that you litterally can´t play the game.

Disregard the 'Mostly Negative' reviews. As someone who is very critical about game play, this is a tycoon game not to be missed. The main issue is that the Steam edition has a major bug which make the game crash after four minutes, but this is an easily fix when you delete a file in the game folder which will then make the game playable.

This game is highly addicting and focuses on managing business across the many districts of New York City. You are a developer, and there you're tycoon will consist of over 200 different buildings and their features. You could be running 30 different types of apartments which have very specific desirability and profits, pizza stores, movie theaters, specialty shops, fancy restaurants, department stores, convenient stores, the list is endless. It's actually quite shocking how much content isn't advertise for this game. Fairly easy tycoon game with a lot of replay value and addicting game hours. It's much MUCH larger than it appears, and should be a number one pick for anyone who likes or loves tycoon games. It's well worth the money.

Baneful Chordate
Baneful Chordate

The game is a very good tycoon game which is unique in the genre because it documents your progress as you build up your little version of New York. The atmosphere is great and is noticeably one-of-a-kind in which no other game has attempted to simulate.

unfortunately there is no support for this ancient game, and I had to turn to the discussion boards to get my game running.

The objective of this game is to bring the city to life, not the challenge of finances. Because of this, some argue that it is too easy as it is impossible to lose, but despite this still i havent lost interest.

It seems someone uploaded to Steam the beta version instead of the release version from 2006, going by dates attached to files. Updates cant find the original version to patch. It wont even display the opening page or video. It is Direct X 9c if you care to try to get it working, but I believe I have tried everything. Avoid. Money back for me.

Simply do not bother getting such a game.

It is a shame that Steam still carries this title on its library and sells it.

Simply unplayable... start with a message stating old drivers d you wish to continue, after clicking yes the game window opens but absolutely black and all I can hear is the game sounds. However nothing appears as image.

It also states that I have played approximately 3 hours of game... I wonder how come as I have not been able to play this game so reall wondering where these times come from, certainly haven't spent 3 hours trying to log into the game that is for sure!

I've tested on my rig (Win7 x64, Geforce 980 GTX) and it says "old drivers" right at the start. I didn't change anything and started, game worked fine. Well, it wasn't the best game at release, but it's kinda different to SimCity.

The game is broken from the start and always has felt like an incomplete game from the begining. (pre steam) But it has also always been a fun game despite feeling incomplete and there is a quick fix on the comunity hub to get the steam version to work again. not sure if the fix works for windows 10 but works great for win7 64bit.

Just a quick review with a shorter layout than my other reviews. I have played this game for years and I know it very well, I decided to buy it here again to keep an useful digital copy. I noticed the other reviews and the negative comments, I was even willing to give it a positive review if the problems could be easily hotfixed like some topics claim.

Sadly my experience was quite negative. The game didn't want to start, but I fixed it changing the video card in the settings (I had two choices with the same name). I started a new game and I could check the first cutscene messed up. Ok, maybe it's just one cutscene. Missing textures and different layouts for some buildings were so odd to see, then I accepted a second quest, another bugged cutscene.

44 minutes were enough to ask a refund. I would have appreciated if the game could run as decent as the retail version, but there are way too many noticeable differences and problems within the first hour that made me wonder: Why should I rebuy this game? Do they really deserve these little extra money?

My answer is no, if the texture problem was the only problem with a quick hotfix, I could let it go and recommend the game anyway with a complete review, it ended up being the first refunded game in my library because sounds like there is no care about the product on sale, it just doesn't work and they don't care about fixing the basic bugs to make it as smooth as the retail version.

Refunded and not recommended, don't buy it until it's fixed. Just stick with the retail copy if you can get one. I will also try to report the problem to Retroism and push for a fix/update, the original game deserved a try indeed!

NO no NOOO, what the hell have you done to this game?, just 30 seconds in the start and i regret buying. the graphics are bugged, some of the characters dont have animiations, some are have audio but have no animations. i know the original game didnt have the highest graphics, but in this, wow its eye cancer, how can you screw up a game like this, i'm glad i still have the CD version.

I really like this game a lot. I played it a lot some years ago (not on Steam). Sadly I bought it on Steam to discover that there are major graphic flaws (which can be solved by manually removing to folders - Models and Anims), but when I get to a certain point in game (the fourth area I think), the game just keeps crashing. I've tried two play throughs (one with the graphic bugs and one where I got it fixed), and it doesn't help with the crashes sadly.

So I would like to recommend it, but it's unplayable.

This version of the game is absolutly broken, it's a shame Valve allows this game to be sold with it's long term bugginess and glitches. THe game runs awesfully, even on a Windows XP machine it ran fine on from the original disc, its also missing textures, buildings, and uses literal placeholder boxes for some of the structures. This version of the game is broken, buy the physical disc for the actual complete game!

DON'T BUY THE STEAM VERSION, IT'S INCOMPLETE, BUY THE PHYSCIAL COPY!

An interesting city-building simulation game with realistic dialogue, basic economic function, and a firsthand glimpse of city living in New York City.

Granted, it may have had some bugs, as if it were released as an unfinished (or hastily-produced) game. But at least its characters' social dynamics are enough for me to overlook such development faux pas, at least for a brief period of time...

That being said, I'd give "Tycoon City: New York" a 6.3 out of 10.
If the game developers could create a bug-fixing patch or two, then I might consider giving it a higher score for improved game mechanics.

I enjoyed this game as a kid. It's fun and engaging. Unfortunately in the Steam version there are bugs. A few unique buildings are shown as gray blocks and bridges aren't where they're supposed to be. I'm sure it's a simple fix. These issues are minor and don't leave much of a negative impact on the game. It is still playable and fun.

alkemmy

Played this for many years from CDrom before investing in the Steam version, a unique mix of sim city and goal-based city sim, highly playable. That said, the steam version hiccups a little on W10, won't offer HD resolution, seldom recognises the newest graphics cards (but will still play) and doesn't like sound output through HDMI rather than a dedicated sound card. Works fine from the CD on Wexp and Wvista but these aren't supported any more by steam! Just have to make do. It's a remote hope, but should anyone actually read this review, who can make changes in the program compatibility itself...?

While it has some nice ideas and could be quite fun to play, unfortunately it is buggy and tends to crash to desktop pretty frequently making playing it a chore, there are also some missing textures that make at least one of the later missions impossible to complete (I didn't get that far myself though).

Apparently it seems instead of having the latest version of the game that was released originally, the version being sold here is an early build (from 2005), possibly a beta or something rather than the finished product with the release date as per the store page.

potatoes.gravy
potatoes.gravy

This is a relaxing, fun game with 2 big caveats. The first is the most important: IT WILL CRASH ON YOU! So save often, like every 10 minutes or so (it's a good practice anyway). It's probably also a good idea to fork off multiple save files over time, since I saw one person said that they got into a situation where the game crashed every time right when they start. I haven't had that at all, it just randomly crashes every one in a while. So each time a new district opens up I will save that as a snapshot point.

The other caveat is that you can't expect this game to be very realistic or complete, and just have to take it for the silly shout out to NYC that it is. There is impressive breadth to it but certain aspects are pretty shallow. For example, if you use your upgrade points only on potted conifers then you'll pretty much always have highly rated businesses. Furthermore, you really don't have any liabilities and will just continue to gain money and credits over time. I read that there are cheat codes but you don't really need them, it's a Tycoon game that is built for your success. It can also become somewhat repetitive at points, but as long as you focus on the opportunities and just building out each district more than 50-60% then it keeps moving along.

Despite the abundance of problems and shortcomings with this game, it deserves an endearingly positive rating for 3 reasons. One is that it is soothing to build up your meaningless and impractical business empire with ease and watch it climb the rankings. Reminds me how pointless such a pursuit can be in real life! Another reason is the cultural experience to get a sense for Manhattan, at least in the mid-2000s. And lastly, it's the same reason you might watch an outdated or poorly done movie to be entertained at how dissonant some parts are. There are little nuggets that charm for various reasons. From tired cliches and stereotypes to bizarre technical glitches, even its limitations are adorable!

I wish someone had told me from the beginning there is a speedup control in the top right popout menu. It can go up to 4x speed which makes certain stretches much more enjoyable.

The last thing I'll say is that this is not worth $10 by my standards. But if you get it in the bundle when it's on sale and there is one or more other games in that group that you think could be fun, then go for it. Cheers!

this game is a huge time sink, very fun and super awesome city builder but I do admit I love games like this so it might not be for everyone. I suggest looking for the guide to fix this release, it can be found on Steam. But, in case that guide is gone. Go to where this game is installed and then into the data folder and delete the ANIM, MODELS and GRID folders and now your Steam Release works! No crashes reported in Windows 11.

Note: This game does not go higher than 1600x900 if anybody would like to reverse engineer the .exe I shall reward them heavily!
