Typefighters is a competitive multiplayer game where two players battle each other using their typing skills. Its variety of modes does not only emphasise typing speed and correctness, but also other skills like reaction time, sustained attention, creativity, tactics and anticipating the opponents moves.

So, the game is dead. No one plays, never any servers up. The dictionary can be frustrating at times. If you're American make sure to change it from British English (the default). Pretty easy to pick up the modes without reading the tutorial. Dial in the AI, tweak the settings, and get to playing vs AI.

My one major gripe is that you can't 'backspace' if you accidentally start the wrong word you have to finish it out, which depending on the mode can be really frustrating. That and the lack of players are really the only issues this game has. Yea, its simple, its barebones, it isn't much, but its a pvp speed typing game, what more do you need? Its 2 dollars, buy a copy for you and a friend and direct connect.

Typefighters is a game where you compete in typing against... the computer. Yes, I know, it sounds boring, but it isn't, It has multiple modes, but basically it comes down to either typing words on the screen before the AI does, or type the word computer launches at you as a "defensive measure. In fact, there are multiple modes you can try, and if that's not challenging enough you can always turn up the speed. If you are tired of the normal typing games (such as Typing of the Dead) you may want to give this one a try.

If you are looking for a single playing typing experience, this isn't even worth the $2-3.
You will struggle to find 45 minutes of viable practice/entertainment before the tedium devours you, and that is coming from someone who is desperately eager to practice and improve. Only two of the several single player modes ("lines" and "stream") are designed well enough to sharpen your typing skills and speed. With every other mode, you will spend 80% of your time waiting for an "AI" while you look at a bare white screen. On the plus side, those pregnant pauses will give you plenty of time to consider the choice language you will use to lambaste the game in your scathing review. No matter how rarely you post public game reviews, this game will inspire you to dust off your keyboard for the express purpose of warning any fellow travellers who are about to toss their hard earned coin down this utterly barren well. The most rewarding experience you will ever have with this game is the satisfaction of seeing your available hard drive space grow ever so slightly larger when you uninstall it.

Underrated as hell typing game. The various gamemodes, ability for custom dictionaries, and multiplayer PVP modes make this a really good purchase at a mere $2

Super fun and funny game. Plus, helps you master your typing. Multiplayer works well if you got that competitive itch like me.

I need to play more: made 7 typos typing this review.

Fun little typing trainer, the multiplayer really does feel hectic while attempting to out type each other. Lots of game modes, but sadly its hard to see many of them because not many people are online. I imagine its just a case of it being new but i do hope that the low asking price will at least have it so you can get a game every now and again. Worth the money though even for the single player as a typing exercise game. Its no typing of the dead, but what game really is.

Brilliant idea for a game. Take an everyday skill that (almost) everybody claims to be good at, and find out who really is boss. Already played the non-Steam version for a couple of hours and loved it. Matches against the AI are good fun, but playing against real people is a blast.

God awful, multiplayer does not work at all even if it did the UI is so poorly designed, slow and messy that I wouldn't know if it is working or not. I never thought I'd buy a game for £1 and regret it but my God this is the most unpleasent experience I've ever had buying a game.

This is a cute game, and a fun way to improve typing skills, but it's got some SERIOUS bugs!

Usually, once the timer runs out, you get a scorecard that says how well you did - your score, accuracy and so on. If you type too close to the end of the round, it'll just freeze at 0:00 and you'll have to hold escape to get to the menu. Once this is fixed, I would highly recommend this game for anyone looking to improve their typing!

I'm hoping to use it to learn the Dvorak keyboard.

Overall, this is a fun, cheap, and helpful game all together.

There are lots of gamemodes and a multiplayer mode, so you won't get bored so fast. As an added bonus to a fun concept, you can improve your typing speed along the way.

As with many games, there are some bugs to be fixed and some features to be added (V-Sync), but this is a really fun, simple game.

would be great if the multiplayer wasnt completly broken. cant connect to anyone, then it says no one is on. I also cant seem to play but stream. There are no other types available. Its still early, and the game has alot of promise.

Definitely worth two bucks. I'm a decent typer and I thought it would be fun to hone my skills even more. Regretfully the multiplayer was empty when I tried at night so I'm hoping once the game sells more there will be more people. I also noted a slight annoyance. On the game tug if the line stops at the top of the screen the timer can cover up the words so itd be nice if either the timer or the words were shifted in one direction.
Edit: They addressed my main issue of AI speed and made it up to 20x which is insanely fast. Now I can be challenged without multiplayer.

It's relatively rare that I bother writing a negative review, but this seems warranted due to the current, inexplicably high positive review rate, low price, and alarmingly high number of purchases I'm seeing on my FL. Basically, it seems worth warning people off from this.

I wanted to, erm, not hate this game, shall we say... but...

It really is quite terrible. Despite being a very fast typer, I have trouble mustering the typing energy to even elucidate why.

Perhaps that's because I am afraid of spending more effort writing a review than it takes to make a game as simplistic and terribly flawed as this.

In that sense, I speak as a programmer and a connoisseur of typing games.

So, I'll just quickly list out a bunch of the problems here:

There's (almost) nothing here for fast typers like myself. The game just doesn't scale. Doesn't show enough words on the screen at once (except the stream mode, which, due to its lateral movement, is too hard to visually follow; Lines mode is ok, and maybe projectiles mode in multiplayer, but that's about it).

The whole concept of multiplayer as executed here is fatally flawed. The only way this would ever be remotely fun is if the two players were almost exactly matched, and how likely is that? Not very, considering the huge range of typing ability that exists. The game tries to inject other elements besides just typing speed, but doesn't really succeed, imo. It's just awkward.

The "matchmaking" doesn't even exist as far as I can tell in the modern sense of the word. I think what the dev meant by this is... a server list. Yeah, a server list. But, even on launch day when steam stats say ~70 people are playing, I couldn't find any open games. It also supports direct IP, but then you'd have to fiddle with ports. From what I read on the forums, it sounds like you have to fiddle with ports to even get the non-direct "matchmaking" to work. There's no instructions on that, and maybe I'm wrong, but, whatever.

You can play against AI, but the AI just types words randomly at an EXACT speed. That kind of makes sense, but it's just not fun, especially since, at least for faster typers, their performance against AI especially will be down mostly due their ability to recognize words quickly after they appear (the AI starts typing immediately with no delay), and to not get tripped up by "weird" words that the game throws at you.

Similarly to "matchmaking", yes, the game has steam leaderboards, but they're, erm, silly, shall we say. Mostly they just track number of games won, which isn't well correlated with skill or anything. Then there's other stuff like a leaderboard for the highest difficulty AI opponent won, but that's just a multiplication of the two variables you can set for the AI, and there's pretty cheesy ways for even inexperienced typers to win against the hardest setting, so that, too, is awfully silly and pointless.

There's a variety of other more specific flaws like not being able to cancel out of typing a word you accidentally started - sometimes it's even hard to quickly figure out which word that is since you weren't already looking at it. The lines mode, one of the more interesting ones, has screwy graphics that make words hard to see quickly, which is again, a must for fast typers, if nothing else.

The word list is... bizarre. You are given a lot of very weird, obscure words, and lots of random proper nouns, and... roman numerals. It seems to randomly choose between categories of words, so a large proportion end up being proper nouns, and a surprisingly large percentage seem to be roman numerals... how did that ever seem to be a good idea?

There are, of course, no real graphics to speak of.

On the positive side, it's cool that the menus can also be operated via typing (though not entirely original), and the overall feel of the typing is slick and responsive. The general concept is interesting, but interesting ultimately doesn't matter if the execution is inadequate.

So, sure, this is kind of an original idea (at least, I'm not aware of another game that has this kind of direct, mano a mano typing gameplay), but who would this appeal to?

Well, I guess it just might be sort of fun for two friends that don't type very fast and happen to type at very similar rates - so I guess if you fall into that narrow category, then go for it, but otherwise steer clear.

Or, you can try it for less than 2 hours and see for yourself and then just grab a refund like I'm about to. EDIT: or, you can find the free version around elsewhere (I think it's the same except for the server list feature).

There plenty of better/good/decent alternatives for typing games out there. Even if you've played them all and are desperate for variety, this is unlikely to satisfy you in any way. For example, choose Epistory for a generally nice, well rounded typing game on Steam, or Typer Shark for a more simplistic yet challenging typing experience. For a real time competitive game, try Serpentine online (basically a Tangleword/boggle clone), or hi-games for pure, real time typing speed matchups.

This is like most of the other "typing fast" games, with a few new gamemodes. However, it has online multiplayer. I think that makes it definitely worth the 2 dollars it costs, even if it isn't the new "next gen 4k 60 fps mmo shooter". It's different and works great.

I only played one hour of this at the time I'm making this review and despite the short playtime I foresee playing this more in the future. The premise is simple, why make a typing game be convoluted. I'm not saying Typing of the Dead is bad, or god forbid the games of our childhood that we were told to play in class. No those were all good on their own, but there's something so blissfully simple about this game that makes it exciting. It's like the typing version of "You Don't Know Jack." It has multiplayer implemented very well upon release. Not many small games get the "Join Game" functionality right on steam, but this one has it down so it's easy to get your friend to hop on board with you and compete 1v1.

Speaking of competition, there are SOOO many different game modes, from connect 5, tug of war, to even just who can make the most words. There's always variety and you can always swap game modes in between matches. You can customize your matches to crank up the difficulty so it's fair.

You can even CREATE YOUR OWN LIST OF WORDS. I know, it's crazy, but say you wanted to just play a full game with nothing but curse words, you can do that. Albeit you have to type those words in by hand or find some website to rip the words from, but there's always some way to customize your experience. Just last night my friend and I jotted down a list of dank memes for our word bank to choose from for each game mode and had a blast!

For only 2 bucks...well $1.50 right now, I can't recommend this game more. Just sell a few steam trading cards or one of those stat trak fedoras you got from CS:GO and get typing!

-I start up the game confidently boasting to my friend "I can type >95 WPM. I dare you to beat me at this game"
-I finish a round against the computer with only 56 GWPM
-Realizes the last test I took was probably an estimate based on how fast I was typing, not how many words I was actually accurately typing.

Multiplayer with friends is really fun and it could help people who wants to get better at writing fast. I enjoyed the game modes. If they add new game modes, it would get even better.

pros:

I bought this game because it promised Matchmaking, however it has no such thing. It does have a server list, which is empty. "8 players online" at time of writing. Not entirely the game's fault I guess, but don't expect to be able to play this multiplayer unless you have a specific friend in mind.

Played this game for about 20 minutes. One of the worst typing games I have ever played. The dictionary is horrible. The fact that all words are initially set to vibrate on the screen, making them near impossible to read is dumb. If you ever attempt to adjust the word length, the game breaks and starts giving you words of any length it wants.

Probably Harmless
Probably Harmless

I find that it's a fun game that challenges your typing speed, knowledge of words, and familiarity with the keyboard. one problem that I have found with this game is that you are unable to quit while in a match. I have found no way to exit out of matches aside from turning the game off. Other then that, I quite enjoy the game and it's a nice brain exercise. 9/10 (One point removed for the lack of inputting a way to quit during a match) I would suggest this to anyone who has some money to spare and would enjoy a little brain challenge.

This game would be a lot of fun in theory. Indeed, I'd love to play it against human competitors. The AI for single player play is mediocre if not bad, resulting in an unsatisfactory game play experience when playing solo. As well, there never seems to be anyone in the open gaming lobby for multiplayer play. That said I imagine making a private room would work well and that this would be a good versus game in that context. I like the fact that there are multiple modes and the fact that there is language support for British and American English.

Not much to say about this game except that it's a disappointment. It's kinda laggy, matches are hard to find, and the games are based purely on words. I kinda expected at least one format mirroring the standard 'typing tests' where you type legible sentences.

Can't recommend for anyone, unfortunately.

Badger Botherer
Badger Botherer

I've had this game for ages and I've never quite put my finger on why I get annoyed with playing it for so long until recently, sadly this is why I can't personally recommend it.

Overall its a fine game and idea, but I find the text you type under the words unbearable to look at and hampering to gameplay. While other forms of typing would simply show the text you are typing they've decided to animate it for an unknown reason. Sadly this is for one thing too slow and secondly distracting. Whenever I type a word wrong I find myself having to wait that half a second to see where I went wrong, which at the speed one has to play this game at, is simply ridiculous and sometimes it becomes more effective to retype the word out.

Obviously this issues is highly subjective to your method of typing and others might not notice. I'd would like to finish on a quick note that while the online element was actually a lot of fun, being the niche game it is, the playerbase isn't there anymore so sadly shouldn't factor into your decision to purchase.

Paheej

Although this game is cheap it lacks any multiplayer presence. The singleplayer mode is not engaging enough to justify spending time playing so I cannot recommend this game with the wealth of other games out there that you could spend your time on.

I am sorry, but no matter how much I adore typing and gaming, this is a bad combination of the two and a generally horrible experience, which truly ended badly when the word "cunt" (also known as "see you next tuesday") came into my view as something that needed to be typed. I was shocked and offended and instantly closed the game, never to open it again. DO NOT LET CHILDREN PLAY THIS.

If you want a typing game, I suggest Typing Of The Dead, or for a family friendly experience, Epistory: A Typing Experience.

Typefighters is a pretty well designed game. It's responsive and the audio and graphical asthetics are nice. The different modes are clever and make the game more interesting than: who can type the fastest. For single player you won't get much out of here, but on sale with a friend, it's a pretty solid game.

Interesting and really simple game... makes typing fun honestly (i'm a writer though I already type for fun but you get my point)

The only thing though is it's not truly multiplayer... I mean... you're playing against a computer whose difficulty you can adjust accordingly but it does get boring... pretty fast.

It's not worth $1.99 in all honesty. Just isn't. There are different "game" options but I feel this would me more for students to test their typing skills. That's the ultimate use I see for it.

But I mean, it's a good game. Try it out.

I am a computer teacher and would love to use this in class, except for the bad language. Would it be possible to limit the vocabulary to a certain age group?

Note I would buy about 20 copies of this.

I have never seen anybody else online that uses this when I do, so we would only use this in class.

It's pretty good apart from the 'Lines' mode, which for some reason is an incredibly laggy mess.
Not convinced this is really worth spending money on until the dev takes the time to fix it, since there really isn't a lot here, so what is here really ought to work properly.

永遠の素晴らしき日々
永遠の素晴らしき日々

I bought this game as part of a bundle with the much more realised EpiStory (which has some great graphics to boot). The multiplayer is completely dead, but it could be a bit of fun with friends. However, this game has some huuuuuuge balancing problems.

There are a few game modes where typing speed isn't sooo important, but if one player can type at 100wpm and one player types at a max of 55wpm, there's no question who is going to win - even if the 55wpm player is, say, better at coming up with words in 'Creativity' mode or has faster instincts. There is one mode where typing speed isn't a significant factor but can still decide matches - Reflection. It's variant, Tug, is still largely decided by typing speed. I just don't see any way this can be much fun with the lack of balance.

Competition against the AI falls into two categories: way too slow, or impossibly quick, to the point where it is impossible to do things earlier than the AI. It isn't all that much fun even when the AI does match you because the match feels empty.

Typeracer is, unfortunately, way more fun.

I played it for about an hour and I don't think I'll ever touch it again. It definitely isn't worth the $2, and I'll go into exactly why with some more brutal comments as this review draws to an end.

TypeFighters is a poor realisation of a great - but largely impractical - idea. A game that uses typing as its main game mechanic? That's so cool! Typeracer is great and all, but it's not that much fun when the only game element is competing for the top 20 scores of the hour. It's just a singleplayer typing test where the results are compared against other people, and the closest it comes is to 5 people doing the same typing test at the same time. That's *almost* like competitive gameplay, but it's still way too separate. Typeracer is an ego trip - I've wanted a multiplayer typing game where there is both skill and speed involved for a long time. TypeFighters is the exact kind of game I wanted to love, but it's just gets boring too fast.

There are a bunch of modes, but once you've played them a few times, you've played them to death. There's some definite creativity here - I particularly like Tug & Reflection. If only they worked practically. Much like TypeRacer, the competition is still too separate because of the disparate typing speeds between players. It's just too imbalanced for it to be any fun, and there's no depth in the singleplayer to make it worth buying.

I find it very hard to believe that this game took longer than a few weeks to write. It's very barren and barebones.

Yeah, I guess this kind of game just isn't possible. I'm not particularly disappointed based on the reviews I read before I played the game, but I'm pretty sure I would be if I paid money for it. This is the kind of shallow but cool & experimental game that should be released for free.

It's a pretty good idea for a game, but it is hard to see the words on the screen when they are moving. It looks like a problem with VSync, but I have it on. Also there is nobody in the multiplayer, so you can only play against a bot.

TLDR: Hardcore challenge, cutomizable. However bland, simplistic Unity Engine shell. Easy to lose track of which word the engine wants you to type. Lacks flavor.

Epistory, Typing of the Dead Overkill, Typer Shark Deluxe, Grimm's Quest: Remastered and God of Word are five different games in this very specific subgenre that ultimately outclass this.

I like that you can customize the time limit, the level of impact of the computer AI stealing words from you and the like. However it is just not enough. The white background is quickly fatiguing on the eyes and the sound effects quickly become grating.

I'm gonna keep it very short and very.. whatever. I played this game a year ago and I took it again now just for fun xD
Well, I won only one thing in my entire life - European championships for typing speed or something like this. I mean, various titles in the same "competition" type XD
One can probably argue that this is one of the many causes that forced me to undergo surgery three times on my right hand, but this is another story.. xD
Well, I have always typed like at 700-800 characters per minute (NOT WPM, that means WORDS per minute! 800 words per minute I think not even an octopus). So this game was one of my very first choices on Steam.
And in single player AND in local co-op it works greatly.
It lacks on its probably funniest part - the multiplayer one. Basically, no one plays it (and no one played it back in 2016 - I played it at the beginning of 2017, 0 players online ever). So you'll never play with an online adversary, but just with a local one if you manage to get one xD
The game supports LAN playing and so on.
And it offers you tons of different modes which of course all revolve around typing!
There's no great tutorial, but you'll likely learn everything by playing and it's really a small time-killer.
You'll be able to choose, apart from the almost 10 different playing modes, the time limit, the dictionary, the length of the words you'll have to type, the speed of the AI if you're in single player mode and such.
You'll also have the chance to change the colors and so on.
The various modes are quite challenging and funny, and I found no problems at all to understand how they worked even without a tutorial.
And the game also serves as a typing checker, since you'll always be provided after each level with a sheet telling you your speed, the perfect words you typed, the letters missed and everything else. Quite educational!
The different modes - namely stream, attention, creativity, tug, lines, reflect, projectiles and guess - all provide different challenges, like, "attention" will require you to type words appearing in different parts of the screen (while of course you'll always, in single player, have control of the AI's speed and other options before every game, since it'll try to type the words before you xD), "creativity" will scramble words through the screen in different colors, or "tug" will be a real tug-of-war: you and the AI (or the opponent if you're playing with someone else) will battle with a horizontal line going up and down depending on your speed and the words typed in the correct way.
In the end, this game has lots of bugs (but they never affect the gameplay itself, just the graphics in the menus) and, most of all, it has NO multiplayer activity and it's been like this for ages, almost since it came out here.
So, you've got to take into account that this IS incomplete and will always be as it is, for no other players will play this game and you'll be unable to enjoy a real multiplayer battle, unless you've got a friend connected both in LAN or on Steam, but yeah you've got to put each other in contact before and it's not easy for such a small and casual game xD
All in all, and having always been a lover of typing (I've been European champion for real in the early '00s! XD), I'd recommend this small game for its price (it has also trading cards!) - just be aware that you're going for a mostly single-player typing game, casual and filled with nice playing modes and such, but all against the AI.
In my view, not only it's ok and it has got lots of customization available, but it can also be educational - way funnier than the plain 1-minute typing standard exercise things you can find on the Internet.
But this is not a game, in the end. It's a typing exercise and challenge, funny and casual, entertaining, but it's always a game revolving around typing random words and sentences with your keyboard.
If you think that it can be educative and interesting (for the dictionary options too), I'd recommend it. If you wanna something funny and casual like a small game, this isn't probably the one for you but probably if you're searching for platformers and casual shooters you're not looking here xD

It is honestly a pretty good time waster, and could potentially be used as a typingtool in schools to teach faster typing. Playing this every so often helps me keep my WPM up. Worth it for 2 bucks, but I think it goes for literally 10 cents when on sale.

I had a blast playing Typing of the Dead: Overkill, so I'm generally interested in new typing games showing up on Steam. Typefighters is another one of those minmalistic puzzle games on Steam, at least in presentation. In a nutshell, it is a competitive typing game, where you can type against the AI. The AI is usually, though not always pefectly accurate. instead it is fairly slow unless you turn up its speed before a match for a challenge. There's a nice variety of modes, but it all boils down to typing against black letters on a white screen. While it might be neat or fun to challenge yourself a bit, it will become boring quick.

The game is meant to be played with other people. There is a multiplayer screen to play online, but at the time of writing is ultimately pointless - there was one player online when i first looked into it (it shows the player count at the bottom left of the main menu) and I thought it was counting me. I relaunched the game at a later time and it shown zero players. Whoops. You can either host an open or private server and then players can either join by a server browser or join directly by IP address. I don't think most PCs can use multiple keyboards by default, so its seems like the only way to play locally is to have multiple PCs each with their own Steam copy of this game and connect to each other with direct Ip addresses.

Typefighters is a mostly multiplayer would be a pointless purchase due to a dead player base and a sllightly arduous way to play the game locally. Singleplayer is a fun distraction for a couple minutes, but quickly turns out too boring or too hard. If you have a bunch of IRL friends who have Steam and can get this game, you can have a few moments of fun - otherwise, pass on this.

Excellent typing game! Better than TyperShark.

Simple & elegant - this game follows the age-honored engineering rule of simplicity. The rules are simple: type to win. The first time I started playing, I burst out into uncontrollable laughter - this game is so simple, yet still fun! Kinda like swordfighting with wrapping paper cardboard. Simple. Satisfying.

Offers many different modes for different styles of players - and every mode comes in player vs. computer or player vs. player. "Easy" mode is not a limiter for fast typists. I would definitely recommend as a school typing game for players of any age, or anyone who wants to up their typing speed - especially those who know where the letters are but who haven't memorized and figured out muscle memory yet.

I give it 11/10!

Good exercise but I wish mistyping would cause game over instead of just reducing points. I currently prefer the keyzen website.

Fun, if fiddly, typing game. There are more interesting games of this style, but this isn't a bad choice.

It costs next to nothing so get it if you want to up your typing game.

There is a bizarre emphasis on player vs. player! I just want to type and compete against myself, and the only mode that kind of lets me do that is the Stream mode which feeds the player words from right to left.

The others just don't work that well if you're playing alone, or at least they felt awkward to me.

I turned off all the sounds in the game. There is a ghastly voice letting you know when time is almost up and there are some really shrill sound effects I didn't like.

But I play it daily for 20 minutes or so and I can already tell I'm faster at typing up stuff at work.

This game has very great potential and I love the way it's programmed. It has a very simple design, focusing only on the typing with no superfluous graphic distractions. The amount of modes is nice, and provides variety for those who want a simple game to play, and it also offers multiplayer options with people online. I personally play the Stream Mode, as it lets you know your WPM (since I purchased the game to help me type faster). HOWEVER. At the time of this review, I am VERY disappointed in the word choices: fake words, misspelled words, Roman numerals, acronyms, unnecessary apostrophes, proper nouns that aren't capitalized, and way too many words about reproductive organs. I'm not sure if users are the ones who contribute to the word lists, but since you have to be online to play this game anyway, I think it would be better if the game just pulled words from an online dictionary instead.

if you're the type of person who has a mechanical keyboard with blank caps, and at least one other friend that thinks that's cool, then sure this is a game for you and your friend.

Not really sure why so many people hate this game for dumb, arbitrary reasons, but I approve. The whole point behind it is to improve your typing, and I think it does that pretty well. I don't think it's really meant for super advanced typists, and as for the word selection, who cares? A word is a word is a word regardless if someone finds it offensive or against proper English; and for the sake of typing improvement, even words that aren't really words count. I personally didn't encounter any bugs, but if I had, I'd still recommend the game because it costs pocket change and it's worked fine for me for the amount of time it took me to earn all the achievements. It's overall a good game for improving your typing speed, so don't be discouraged by the 'mixed' review rating.
