Generally speaking, a good but not "great" wargame. Biggest flaw is that it tends to focus too heavil on logistics rather than direct force-on-force combat. The lack of a system to allow depleted units to rest and recover (unless you have prestige points to buy them) is another annoyance. Those quibbles aside, I enjoyed this game and continue to play it regularly.

Its not a strategy game. The time limit of each scenario is very tight, and there is only one win tactic for each scenario. more then 50% of the time you end up replaying the same scenario. Realism is close to 0, all you have to do is charge mindlessly with your armored units without paying attention to infantary lost as fast as possible to objective cities for the win, with one mistake in a 9 turn game you replay again.

Easy to learn, hard to master. And a good AI makes this strategy game a gem. Unique and well made simulation of logistics. Cut off the enemy's supply lines while at the same time protecting your own is an important strategy in this game, and it is very well executed and has good replayability.

This game has nothing to do with strategy and should not be advertised as one. It's a puzzle game where you have to predict what semi-magical exploit the AI will use the next turn. If that's your thing, perhaps you'll enjoy it. As for me, an old grognard, this is vomit inducing.

I don't understand how, but when I start playing UoC, then next thing I realize is that 4 or 5 hours have flown by in what seems like an hour. Once you get started, it's completely engrossing, like very few other games.

A nice introduction to operational-scale wargames. There's a fair amount of complexity hidden behind the simple, 'pushing-panzers' gameplay and the game subtly rewards the sort of indirect manoever, blitzkrieg tactics that were such a feature of WW2.

There are some criticisms: the scenarios are somewhat puzzle-boxey and tend to have a 'correct' solution and being unable to play to the end of an entire campaign of interlinked scenarios if you fail just one of them gets pretty frustrating; but all in all this is a great game.

Amazing operational look at the various East Front campaigns in WW2. The game is easy to learn, but a consistent challenge to play well. The enemy AI is as good as I've seen. It will consistently punish your mistakes and oversights. I would easily rank it among the best computer wargames I've ever played.

Simple but kind of addictive. Narrow margins for the higher victory levels make it a little frustrating at times though.

Simply can't load the campaign at all. Game starts up pretty quick to the main menu. After 20+ minutes the campaign never loads. Re-installed and same issue. I even let it sit over 12 hours which didn't get recorded as played time by steam and it never loads. No game, no play, no fun, waste of time.

Don't buy this game! It does not work out of the shrink wrap - map is zoomed in so close, you can't play the game. It is a known issue, you can google how to fix it. But as a mature commercial product, this gets a zero. Lol, I think this means no more games from 2 x 2. They should be thoroughly embarrassed, as this is something they could have patched easily. Instead, your initial experience with the game is trying to figure out how to get it to work...

i rarely write reviews, i'm offended by how bad this game is. it's not a strategy game, more like a tedious tactical puzzle of how to hastily rush your troops to capture victory points in the minimum amount of turns. seems like the scenarios usually give you only one or two turns extra beyond the fastest possible victory. not much risk of dying, the difficulty is mostly in moving all your forces around within the time limit. sooo bad. come on!!!! why are there no good strategy games?!?!!?!?

edit: i forgot to mention some of the brilliant features of this gem.
- the graphics are cute, but the unit icons almost entirely cover the rivers, which as any strategist knows are crucial to your plans. there's a button to view the terrain, but it hides the units, so you have to continually toggle it on and off to see what you're doing. there is no way to view the hex grid, which can be unclear, and no visualization for the movement range of enemy units. it's ok though since the ai probably won't attack you anyway.
- the download size isn't bad, under 300 MB, but why are there long load times between everything?? there is nothing in this game that couldn't load immediately with decent programming.
- the basic systems are pretty cool, but the scenario design is so hamfisted that it just ruins everything. rather than giving you an open map to play around with, there are these awful crowds of units that you have to move around awkwardly, and many of them become irrelevant as the scenario progresses. from what i could tell from the descriptions there are no scenarios about defense or retreating, just advance and capture locations. the strategy is forced on you by the scenario setup, the challenge is to efficiently leap frog your units to attack and advance in as few turns as possible. there are so many little decisions to make as you move your waves of units in prescribed directions, and almost all of these decisions feel insignificant. there is no feeling of reward after winning even a "hard" scenario, just a feeling of your time being wasted. this game could easily have been really good, but due to the objective structure it's a complete failure.
- there is a scenario editor so maybe users have made some better ones? i'll update this review if i find any.
- in my short play time the game has crashed.
incompetence!!!!
devs, please study strategy and game design so your efforts aren't wasted!!!!!!
this game was sold at a high price for enthusiasts, it's an insult.

Nicely done turn based strategy game. Complex enough to be interesting, but not so technical and detailed as to be a job rather than entertainment.

The AI is unforgiving and incredibly difficult to play against. No learning curve and you cannot make progress in an enjoyable manner. Recommend a way to level down the AI for new players. I don't want a game that is too easy but I also don't want a game that just obliterates my confidence. Just not fun.

My favorite WWII strategy game by far. You really have the feel of a field marshal doing a blitzkrieg attack in the russian steppes. The deep historical research is great and well integrated in simple game mechanics. The sequel (UoC 2) is also great !

I would also recommand this game to people that played UoC2. Their are less mechanics (no generals on map, no FoW, no cards) but the concept of supply is even more central in the eastern front

Beware its not an easy game, but it only makes victory more satisfying.

This game is awesome for its simplicity and elegance. Super easy to learn, but very hard to master. Getting a high score on the campaigns will push you to play again and again.

Boring and frustrating. It's basically just a boring puzzle thanks to the silly and nonsense turn limit, taking away all strategy and flexibility and shoehorns you into only one solution. Just boils down to trial and error, playing the scenario over and over till you get it. No time or space to correct a bad, or even just not perfect decision. Don't waste your time and money.

White Eagle

I only played 3 games, the first scenario but I already got a good feel of what is in store for me.

The game is designed around time based scenarios where you have to capture certain victory goals (cities) in a certain amount of time. For exmaple, the first scenario you have 9 turns to complete for victory but the scenario is designed in a way that you basically have to drive your units at the very start towards the final city. Your panzers can't mop up really and your motorized infantry have to move in the most direct way possible, every hex counts and you could end up short because on turn 9

There was token Soviet resistance to make it feel like a strategy game, but there was no strategy involved except how to get your units in 9 turns to the final city. The Panzer General games did the same thing to a degree. I didn't feel like I was able to exercise my brain on tactics but instead what road to travel, what bridge to cross

This game has a lot of potential and I'll spent a long time playing it. But overall, it's annoying. The thing that bugs me the most is the random weather. The game is set up so that you have a certain amount of time to take key spots, for points. But random weather can completely throw this into disarray and it it impossible to achieve the goals by the specific time.
If you could control this, maybe turn off random weather, that would be one thing... But you can't.
So sometimes you just have to load and then reload a mission over and over again to get the clear weather that you will need to get a Brilliant victory. But there's a good chance that the wrong weather on turn 3 or 5 can basically ruin the whole play through for you.
However, overall this game is a lot better than Unity of Command 2... that game's awful.

Fun game, it's quick to learn and easy to pick up again if you haven't played it in a while, and it really does a great job of making you understand the kinds of issues the generals had to think about when coordinating their forces. I think it's a fantastic successor to Panzer General 2.

Very disappointing! A strategy game should provide the opportunity to use strategy to the win missions. This game has little to do with strategy. The only way to win most maps is to google the exact steps the developer wants you to perform. One of the early maps expects you to win in six turns. Even if the map was empty your fastest unit could not make it to the last objective. The graphics, sound, and game play are circa 1990's and not in a good way. Epic fail!

One of the best wargames I've ever played. A wildly elegant, understandable, and engaging depiction of Eastern Front operational level combat. A Surprisingly elegant supply model makes for a game with depths far beyond what the simple presentation would imply.

Tried to like this game. It's in a similar vein of games as Panzer Corps to an extent but quite a bit more abstracted. Features like the Supply Model and the way Zones of Control are implemented distinguish it and other games of this genre would do well to draw inspiration from it.
That said, the game play itself is FAR too susceptible to the whims of RNG. Brilliant Victories have little to do with actual skill of the player and rely far too much on pure random chance. When countless YouTube play throughs make the same point, you know something is wrong: "It you load up a scenario and there's rain on the map, just exit and start over." Combine that with the lack of "save game" and you're constantly starting the same campaign with the same scenarios with the same AI doing the same moves over and over again because all it takes is one round of falling out of favor of the Gods of Chance and your campaign is done and you're back to square one. Part of the problem is that the margins for victory are very tight. Especially with the first 3 Black Turn scenarios - you could literally remove all the enemy forces from the map and STILL fall short of victory if you're unfortunate enough to be hit with random rain at just the right spots on the map to reduce your movement to the point where you simply cannot achieve the goals in the allotted time. This game became too tedious to enjoy way too fast. I won't be buying the sequel.

It's a good strategic game. Reminds me a lot of the Standard Combat Series board game by MMP. You have steps on the units, supply, zones of control. I started to think that there weren't any video games that could do board games well, this definately shows otherwise. Now I just need to find a good counterpart to ASL and I'll never have to play with humans again! ... This game also has more things going on, but you don't have to do the math that you would if it were a board game. So, you get a game that takes much less time, without losing any complexity.

leterrassier

Yet another Panzer General clone, but this time with supply lines. It's an interesting take on an increasingly stale formula, but it too often plays more like a puzzle game than a war game and has serious (SERIOUS) issues with poor documentation, obtuse and overly abstracted gameplay elements, and to top it off no way to save and reload your progress in a scenario or even restart the scenario without exiting back to the campaign map. It's a shame because there is a bit of brilliance that shines through every once in a while, but the developers have stubbornly done everything they can to bury it. Honestly there are so many PG clones out there (including an excellent open source remake of PG 2) that I just can't recommend this game in its current state. Though I'm told the sequel is a significant improvement, so maybe I'll check that out one of these days.

This is a tremendously fun and elegantly designed game. The brilliantly conceived supply mechanic is the fulcrum around which the entire game pivots; every map has a set of supply sources, with an associated "supply" range. If a unit is within supply range, good, it operates as normal. If not, the unit gradually decays in power until it is resupplied. As units move through unoccupied hexes, that terrian is "captured" and falls under your side's control. Supplies are only propagated through hexes you control. In addition, supply can be propagated indefinitely to any point along railroad lines, as long as you control the railroad hexes between the source and that point. That's it. That's almost the entirety of what you need to know about the supply system. Simple, no?

In practice this means the flow of battle consists of thrusts and encirclements that strongly evoke the nature of combat on the Eastern Front. You'll learn to user your armor to punch through the front line in long piercing maneuvers in an attempt to trap entire groups of enemies in an unsupplied pocket. However, the AI is extremely good, and will exploit any opportunity to do the same to you.

It's brilliant, easy to pick up, and deliciously, viciously difficult to master. If you're curious about wargames, this is the perfect entry point.

while the mechanics may look relatively simple, this is rather deceptive. There's a lot going on under the hood, and the game really captures the feel of manouvre warfare where you need to cut off supply lines while keeping an eye on your own

Do not buy if you think this game is anything like PG or PC with a twist, the only thing they have in common a hex grid.

Unity of Command is an excellent game. It's challenging as the scenarios are fairly short and you don't have so many solutions to optimize your victory. Very nice art work and music. Offers short games for short breaks. Excellent. A game easy to learn but hard to master.

This is an excellent strategy game. The simple graphics hide a complex masterpiece underneath. It is also fun to play the Eastern front of WWII since so many games are focused on the Western Allies during the conflict. Works on Mac and PC. My only complaint would be I wish there was a campaign save feature so I could try the expansion campaigns without having to start over.

This game used to run on my MacOS computer. And it was a really good game. But now after not playing for several years, I reinstalled the game and it refuses to run on the same computer with the same basic version of MacOS. So I am giving it a thumbs down. Games should not run only for a limited time, and then fail to work, on the same computer with the same operating system. Yes, I've gone through all the standard troubleshooting, looking for conflicting software, verifying the game files and cache, etc. It just does not work now. And I can't get a refund. No good!!!

I gave up on this. I've watched video's that show how to win in 2 turns. Try and try again. Can't come close. How are you supposed to defeat an equal opponent, seize 2 cities, across dozens of hexes, in 3-5 turns? Well, like a robot, you have to do exactly what the designer wants you to do in the exact order. This isn't a war game, it's a puzzle. I don't like puzzles. This game would work if you could take as much time as needed to complete each objective and over time learn how to do it faster. But, no. Either you complete the scenario is the time allowed or you have to start over. Gone.

I like strategy games and WW2 era. But this game is just a no for me. It is incredibly boring. And IF you figure out how to play it (after 10 youtube videos on how to do so) you realize that you still have no clue how to win. And you are always on a countdown to finish your objective. You can't relax, you can't plan, you can't learn. You have to rush like a mad man to even have a smal chance. This game is pure stress and no fun.

Great little gem of a wargame. Yeah, it has a puzzle-like aspect that restricts some tactical/strategic variety, but as long as you're okay with that caveat, it's a very good game, and attempts something unique, at the very least. So many PC turn-based wargames these days are just reskinned Panzer General clones. It's honestly pathetic, considering the depth that tabletop wargaming offers, yet very few devs on the PC side seem to want to tap into that wellspring of inspiration.

Anyway, don't expect a traditional turn-based wargame experience, but at least it isn't yet another PG clone ffs.

Unfortunately, its good ideas in UI and mechanics are wasted by level design that disallows flexibility (you get the given forces each mission, you do not build your own force; turn limits are harsh; your rate of advance is heavily affected by randomness (undermining its potential as a puzzle game)).

Many screen resolutions are only supported via option „Full Screen“. Unfortunately, this option is very buggy. A game developer himself describes a work-around in the forums, but no actual fix.

But even with the work-around applied, the problem remains that the user interface does not scale appropriately. For me this makes the game effectively unplayable on my native resolution of 2560x1440, as I do not intend to play while using a magnifying glass.

Great strategy game of warfare on the Eastern Front. I beat the Germans as the Soviets, then turn around and beat the Soviets as the Germans. Supply being the king of all the strategy. Take away their supply and watch their units drop.

This game is not perfect, but I am enjoying it overall. I like the balance between the level of detail and abstraction--there's not so much detail that you get lost, but it's not so abstract that the units have no personality or nuance. I like that logistics play an important part in battle strategy but are not overly fiddly. My most serious complaint is that the battles are timed so tightly (in terms of how many turns you have to achieve victory) that they seem more like puzzles than battles. If you deviate at all from what the game wants you to do, it seems to punish you with a failed mission, usually just for running out of turns. I've only played a few of the battles, and most of my logged time is due to having to repeat them over and over to find the one solution the game desires. Not ideal, but as long as I'm having fun, I'll keep playing.

Not much of a strategy game, more like puzzle with WW2 setting. Obviously no tutorial and after reading manual I still don't have idea what is going on. If you look at the screenshots and maybe a few seconds of gameplay you will be led to think that Unity of Command is a clone of Panzer General / Panzer Corps. However, going into this game with that mindset will make you unable to appreciate its flow and will probably leave you frustrated.

This is more of a puzzle game or a solo board game than a pure strategy game, really. As the scenarios - even in the campaigns - are not connected (i.e. you do not transfer units across maps), each scenario is an independent challenge that you need to tackle. The main goal here is not to amass and assemble the ultimate army - you have no influence on what you are given anyway - but to figure out a solution for the given situation and to pursue it to victory.

Thus this game is played out on two levels - finding a strategy which works with the given map as well as properly executing it. If you want to finish all the maps with the ultimate challenge - decisive victory with no prestige spending - you will fail most of them on your first try and will have to adjust your approach quite often. Sometimes a small refinement is sufficient, while other times you have to discard your original idea and go back to the drawing board. Most maps have surprises that you cannot be fully aware of in advance - like bad weather, enemy reinforcements, etc. - so you have to plan around them accordingly.

I highly recommend reading the manual to learn the finer details of the game as this will make the execution of your strategy and the micromanagement of your forces far more effective.

Once you get into the flow of the game, Unity of Command is great fun. It is one of those few games which showcases the different feel of the different campaigns on the Eastern Front of WWII in an organic way, with no gimmicks used whatsoever. From the first easy victories in Barbarossa to getting stuck in front of Moscow, from a nerve-wracking war of attrition around Stalingrad to the sweeping triumphs as you crush through the remaining feeble opposition in the last few scenarios as the Soviets, Unity of Command always presents you with new angles, challenges and approaches. It is varied and versatile, all the while maintaining the original ruleset. As I said before - no gimmicks.

As a program, the game is very stable and runs smoothly on a potato.

So, if you are interested in a game which is not at all hyper-realistic, but encapsulates the feel of the battles of this specific theater of war, and if you like solving puzzles, give this one a try.

Panzer Tobruk
Panzer Tobruk

I will not recommend this game because it has insanely difficult missions and you cannot change the level of difficulty. To make matters worse, there are plenty of things out of your control that can ruin your game. Bad weather ? You lose. Bad rolls ? You lose. You have to restart the campaign like 50 times to get a win.
This is bulls**t. Never saw a game before where you have only one level of difficulty : insanely hard. Totally bad game.

Here are more thoughts after playing some more. I realised what you need to win this game. Skill ? No. Good tactics ? Nope. What then ? Luck, just dumb luck. If you get good weather all along and excellent rolls EVERY TIME be it air strikes or land combat, then you win. If not, you lose. And I mean every time because if during the last combat, you get a bad roll then that's it, you lost.
Also the war realism is zero. The AI only tactic is to suicide all it's units trying to cut your supply lines. Why ? Very simple, because you have to cross the entire map and destroy a huge army in your path in 2 turns and without supply you won't go anywhere.
This is the most frustrating game I ever played. God, I hate it so much.

Malimete

Unity of Command is a fun strategy game. The movement system is based on hexes or grids if you've ever played Civilization for example then you kinda know what its like. Units attack adjacent units and things like rivers, entrenched units, forests, experience etc decide who wins a battle and who loses. You can play as both Germans (with the less powerful Italian, Romanian etc units to fill in the gaps in the frontlines) or you can play as the Russians.

+The sounds, graphics and gameplay are all good. I was scared of the graphics because the screenshots in the store page made it look like the graphics would look really old but nah the graphics are good. Sounds are simple but thats what i expect from a game like this. Its all good in the end.
+The turn based system, grid or hex based movement system, the attacking, suppression from things like planes it all works well. Nothing too fancy but not bad either.
+You can build, repair or destroy bridges (only if you have the required "ability") otherwise you'll have to waste like 2-3 turns crossing units from one end of a river to the other end.
+You can see Romanian, Italian divisions on the map too which is cool. They are generally way worse then the main German units tho. And i mean REALLY worse. You see a Romanian unit in the German defensive line? Well you know where to attack. They won't be able to stop you.
+The maps are surprisingly huge.
+The logistics and supply system is really simple but it works. Just like the rest of the game nothing too fancy but not bad either. This supply system is incredibly important btw. Like the enemy captures a bridge by going around you Congratulations the supply won't reach your troops so in a few turns that entire pocket will be dead. Supply doesn't go over rivers you need a bridge. There have been so many times where i encircled an enemy troop just for him or his friends to find another opening, rush to a bridge behind me and cut off supply to an entire area. I lost entire missions because of this. "Oh wow look we encircled 3 enemy tro-oh... They just... A random tank just captured a bridge behind us so now the 20 units i have in this area are out of supply and gonna be dead soon." Its incredibly fun and scary tbh. However keep in mind this can entirely ruin a mission. You have limited time to capture objectives and having your supply lines cut and trying to fix it you just spend so much precious time that even if you get the supplies again to your soldiers by that point you've wasted so many turns that coming out victories out of that match is gonna be near impossible.
+The AI is surprisingly good. They will outflank you, cut off your supplies and do their best to win. Sometimes they do stupid stuff but generally i liked them.

-Some missions are incredibly easy while the rest is incredibly hard. You have very limited time to achieve all your objectives if you want a victory. And guess what sometimes a victory is not enough. Sometimes you need a decisive victory which means do everything but be faster about it. This killed my campaing a few times. I got stuck on missions that i simply couldn't complete. After a lot of tries i managed to complete them just as my turn limit was about to end. But i was never able to get a decisive victory. Which means i was simply locked out of the rest of the campaing. Really low amount of time, the tons of enemies that can be really hard to kill and all of this combined with the "decisive victory" requirements for some missions can get really overwhelming.
-Because of the really limited time you have in each mission, tons of objectives to capture within that time, tons of enemy lines to break through there is a lot of things to do and you don't have the time for it (unless you are incredibly lucky) and the issue with this is you never get a situation where the enemy fucks you up but you do a comeback later on and still win
or something. There is no "phyrric victories" here. Either everything has to work near perfect from start to end or you're gonna lose. There is no recovering a mission when something goes wrong.

Even tho i wasn't able to progress too much into the campaings i still enjoyed the missions that i could do. The "decisive victory" requirements, tons of enemy units and the already short turn limit you have really makes the game challenging. Its not a bad game and if you are interested in it then you can try it out. Its pretty easy to learn and user friendly (except for the supply system how tf does that thing work?) if you are gonna buy this game tho you have to buy it at a discount. I'm recommending the game but its a really slight recommendation. Only play if you are really interested and even then buy at a discount.
