A great slightly over priced "AA" detective story-rich game with action combat. Buy on sale, I'm very glad I played this title.

I really wanted to love this game, I really did. Despite the miserable combat (and I've played my share of Euro clunky games but this is by far the worst), terrible map, the uncomfortable spastic movements of the NPCs when they talk with you and the myriad crammed themes (action rpg, souls-like, Open world with repeated assets, hidden object game, and farming NPC for XP like some weird Vampire Doctor Hospital Simulator).

I held on as long as I could because I was invested in the story the game was trying to tell. Overall the main story and side stories were interesting and really the highlight of the game.

What got to me was the countless bugs! 6 times my game crashed, once during combat, once just at random, twice as I was leveling up and twice when I was trying place markers on the map. The last two were in the space of two hours and as I was trying to figure the terrible map and it just completely ruin the game experience.

Great potential but just a complete disappointment in my opinion. Would not even recommend the game on sale.

Challenging gameplay on harder difficulties, a riveting story, and a world influenced by your actions. Also you get to be a vampire which is an immediate plus.

Personally i find the story mode very interesting and nicely done. Depending on what you do and say, some outcomes can be dark indeed. Beware saves happen automatically when performing certain actions. So when in doubt and confronted with a difficult choice you do not want to mess up. Maybe browse other sources on the web to gain more info. The first time around i may have progressed a bit to fast along the story mode. I was stuck in a scenario where i was absolutely torn to shreds by these skraa things (ghoul like vampires). Again and again and again. After several attempts i decided i was not too far from the start of the game to begin anew. So if your in that situation it may help to grind a bit before, gain more xp. Upgrade your skills and then go for it. Honestly i'm loving this game. I find it very interesting. I'm not going to compare this to other games like cyberpunk or kingdom Come. It has its own charm, think london by gaslight, sherlock holmes meets interview with a vampire. I am hooked. If you have not noticed this is my first review of sorts so i apologize for my poor writing. Enjoy people.

tl;dr - Not good, combat is some of the worst I've played, story mostly sucks, talking to characters is mostly useless. You're actions don't have consequences. Great atmosphere though.

I have no idea were the love of this game comes from, maybe it's cause people are starved for even a decent vampire game that isn't "the masquerade". It's not good, the characters can have some interesting moments when you talk to them but dialogue is always the same, the hint system just masks it's mediocrity. For instance, there is a moment where what you say determines what happens to a major character (funnily enough the ONLY instance of this happening considering it's a dialogue heavy game). In this moment you are selecting dialogue options that you, the player, have no idea if you're doing it right cause it's not common knowledge then *poof*...the character is lost forever, wanted to do a "save everyone" achievement run? too bad.
There's also a story beat that is a twist and it's shit. There is no redeeming factor to it at all. Makes 0 sense , and effects a character, that is farrrrr more interesting, permanently. It honestly just made me stop playing.
The combat is by far some of the worst I have experienced in recent memory, the tracking on all characters moves is a crime and renders the dodge function mostly useless. Another problem is the inability to swing more than once after dodging so when you're facing multiple enemies (99% of the time you are) you just awkwardly stand there whilst getting stabbed or set on fire. Enemies will 360 when initiating attacks blowing any sort of immersion the very good and weighty atmosphere creates. The parry will work when it feels like it and most weapons are an absolute chore to use for the majority of the game, like why is a vampire, who even the game states has super human strength and speed, struggling so hard to swing a 4x4 piece of wood. The vampire spells are very dull and limited and the upgrade paths are even worse, it's literally just pick top tree or bottom one (I use "tree" with the lightest sentiment possible since it's more like a twig or a leaf).
The game is not great, really isn't. It had a good story until the big moments come and then it just goes "PICK NOW, KILL THEM OR DON'T". There isn't a "you've gotten to know this person's secrets and other members of their circle trust you, this person will too then", you know, stuff that makes sense (and btw, there is even a circle of relationships mechanic in the game, I don't know why, it doesn't do much). Most of the time, it doesn't really matter if you get to know people or not, like most games with this "your actions have CONSEQUENCES!!!!" theme going.

You can buy this game if you are looking for:
- vampires
- kind of detective playstyle where you have to talk to many people trying to unhide their secrets or inspect cases
- just another rpg

You should NOT buy this game if you are looking for:
- good story
- hard choices
- enjoyable battles
- challenge

This game is what happens when a developer has no vision for it's product. The story keeps rewriting it's rules, the characters are severely underdeveloped, the graphics belongs to 15 years ago, the (only) relationship in the game is also comically underdeveloped (they go from "call me by my first name" to "I love you" in a matter of 1 hour of gametime), the combat is clunky and tries to be imitate Dark Souls way too hard.

If you consider buying it - do it. Nice story, I have been kept in suspense the whole time, you can affect the world around you but it is not some butterfly effect thing. The vampires are sligthly darkish and so is London in the game.

If this was a $40 game, I would consider it okayish, but for a discounted price (if memory serves I got this game for around $8) it's totally worth it. Gives me some Bloodborne vibes, and makes me want to play that again. For context I'm on my third playthrough, 1st was just a blindish playthrough, the second was a murder everyone, and currently finishing up my pacifist run now. Easily a 8-9/10 for me.

The games a little difficult, but I'm sure if you heavily upgraded a specific few skills you would fair well, its just the trouble of deciding your playstyle first and not wasting any points.

I got to near the end of the game with out killing anyone, but got a bit tired of investigations and running around and getting a bit lost so i started killing people and the game got a lot easier, I didnt kill TOO many people but it did heavily speed up my ability to progress the main story.

I'd say if you were looking for a game with good voice acting, decent story and sidequests, and you dont mind a challenge then you'd probably like this game. you dont really HAVE to kill everyone and it seems to be intended that you do a bunch of investigations and kill the ones you dont like and you should have enough exp to finish the game.

minor spoilers but the final boss is immune to stun, so dont be like me and build entirely around stun abilities

Combat is simple most of the game. Swing a few times, dodge, swing a few more, hit the feed button whenever the icon pops up. The only difference is when you find a boss and suddenly have to contend with OP abilities and a health bar made of 10 individual health bars. Deep down, this game really wanted to be part of the dark souls genre.

Vampyr is rough around the edges, but it definitely manages to be a solid RPG experience with a decent story, well written and voiced dialogs, and memorable characters. However, it falls short when it comes to action part of the game.

The major win is how masterfully 1918 London has been recreated, with all the necessary attention to details and overall atmosphere. Each district looks unique, yet all of them share this melancholic vibe of the city on the brink of death, overwhelmed by war and epidemic, not to mention each citizen you can encounter has a backstory and problems of their own. Everything around you creates a nearly perfect depiction of how to portrait a certain period of time historically accurate.

The main protagonist is a prominent surgeon and a new-born vampire, who's struggling both with an epidemic spreading among the citizens and his new condition. Here's where the main feature of the game comes out. Each NPC has a certain blood quality depending on their origin, and the more you learn about them through dialogs and observation, the juicier their blood becomes. You can succumb to your hunger and embrace the character to gain a handful of experience, which will obviously make you more powerful, or you can leave them be and remain most likely under-leveled against common enemies you encounter on the streets. The trick is, this power you gain through embracing common folk comes with a price. With each death the stability of the neighborhood will drop until eventually there will be no one except dead bodies and monsters. Taming your hunger also has its profits, but they're mostly story-related and I'm not gonna spoil anything.

As I said, dialogs and overall story is fine, but combat is quite frustrating and gets old pretty quickly. I mean, it's not terrible, just boring, unbalanced, lacks enemy and abilities variety, and feels overall clunky with camera taking ridiculous angles, grab attacks connect when they clearly shouldn't, and all weapons feel pretty much the same in terms of impact. Story boss fights are somewhat challenging and fun though.

Also, lacking of customization is a light downside for me. And fast travel definitely would not hurt this game, since sometimes navigating through it's tangled streets is a real pain in the backside.

Overall, I personally liked the game a lot. The atmosphere, dialogs, and a decent story were enough for me to put up with a mediocre action part. The game is fairly short and might seem small compared to other action-RPGs, but its overall intimacy suits Vampyr perfectly, making it a decent stand-alone title with some unique features.

Well it took just under 30 hours to complete the game. I did not go through and get all the collectibles or fastidiously explore every area. It was a good a game for $10 and it had some fun mechanics. It was sacrilegious and made light of Christianity at times which I did not appreciate (it was a choice the narrative writers did not have to include but decided to). This game gets a thumbs down for value imposition.

I loved the game. I waited a really long time to play it, I have times when I have a thirst (haha) for anything with vampire themes. And this one was just spot on, I really enjoyed the take on vampire mythology. And the freedom of choices who to kill and who not. After finishing it I really hope there will be a sequel, Jonathan Ried is simply very likable vampire and I would love to hear more about his story after the events of Vampyr.

The only think I really didn't like was the lack of fast travel :D

I am Morbius and it's Morbin Time! Just Kidding, it's me Dr. Jonathan Reid, remember?

I've only played for about an hour & a half, which may seem short, however it's enough for me to say that so far it looks great, plays great and seems to have a cool story thus far. I will be playing more.

Achievements seem to be relatively easy to get, a few collectable and play-style orientated but otherwise it's on par with A Plague Tale: Innocence (A similar game made by the same people).
So far, I recommend.

I want to put a maybe for this game not just a yes or no, but alas the steam review system strikes again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The story in this game is simple yet effective on keeping the player wanting to move forward (Not super complex but does it's job). Dialogue is good in some instances, and in others it is down right atrocious (example the MC cannot do sad or distraught at all, but can do badass/assertive really well).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Combat is clunky and the camera/enemy targeting sucks, but that isn't the worst part. The ridiculous jump in difficulty is insane, I had at one point 4k xp and wanted to upgrade my characters. After doing so the next day progressed which meant for me that the enemy's that were 1 to 2 levels above me were now 5 to 8 levels above me (on normal difficulty that the game tells you is the "intended" way of playing). Oh and don't get me started on the games pathetic excuse on a "crafting system", because its a fucking joke. To upgrade weapons you need 3 crafting materials of various ratings, simple right, except what the game doesn't tell you is that it will be 10+ levels before you can upgrade your weapons again; due to the fact that weapon handles are impossible to find unless you move to the next night to restock vendors inventory, thus making the enemies further scale up making you upgrade useless (great design choice).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lastly the great concept of the district stability sheet, and that's what it should have stayed as a concept. If you kill someone who has turned into a skal then a random Asian lady in the middle of a fucking cemetery, the entire district dies. For what reason, caused by what? Fuck you that's why oh and you want to go back to reset that decision that was so poorly conveyed to you. Oops sorry fucko go restart the game or deal with a shitty save because there are no save states, so I hope you remember all of the decisions you made in a 9 hour play session because to undo that mistake you have to completely restart your save.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All in all the game is good but is plagued by horrible game design. My honest opinion by on sale and play on story mode so you don't get gaped by a boss stronger then the Miquella from Elden ring (little over exaggeration but not by much).

A true masterpiece! From the art, the music (OMG the OST is perfect), voice acting, good story writing... It's just awesome. It balances very good your need to feed on human blood (and become more powerful) and your human part that doesn't want to murder (but you end quite weaker). The combat system is challenging at some points (I spent perhaps too much time level 3 fighting lvl 16 NPCs), but there are also stealthy approaches.
Though I had NO problem at all dealing with the epidemic, it's a ncie mechanic that you need to adress nontheless.
Totally recommended, specially for those of us who had a great time with VtM: Redepmtion and VtM: Bloodlines, and are waiting for VtM: Bloodlines 2.

Deigue

Such a masterpiece game. Incredibly good music/soundtrack, an engrossing story, rich dialogue and NPCs. At a glance I heard weak things about the combat, but personally I found it pretty satisfying and interesting (several combinations to try, re-specing is quite easily possible, specially on a embrace friendly playthrough). In fact, on pacifist runs it really makes you think and strategize combinations and abilities, and makes it very satisfying to pull off underleveled, skilled encounters.
I found myself completely in the steps of Jonathan Reid, and was itching every part of the way to discover what had unfolded among the citizens while taking in their part of the story, and their side-quests. Every part of the way, the game teaches you the people are not always who they appear. A person who looks kind hearted might turn out to have a shady background and history, while a snarky nasty person might have a warranted reason as to why he is being so. Impact around citizen circles can certainly be felt when they certain pawns/pieces are killed off.
The gameplay is also a refreshing balance that really counters what most other games do. It actually encourages being violent, and you turn out to actually feel extremely XP starved when you are trying to be a pacifist like most modern games have the tendencies to make you go with nowadays. The juicing people up lore wise and taking a huge chunk of XP as a result feels very satisfying and I look forward to the powercreep coming from it.
Highly recommend to experience this game firsthand, an ideal pick-up, especially on-sale.

I barely recommend this. I give Vampyr a 3/5. It's just ok, maybe mediocre. It feels like a worse version of The Witcher 3. If you like vampires or want to play a new game, I'd recommend Vampyr.

I've tried and given up on this game twice now, won't ever finish it. The controls are too slow and clunky, and the collision mapping is terrible. I feel like I'm fighting at console speed on a PC. I often swing my weapon through enemies and miss, and I often get hit by enemies swinging wildly away from me. It makes fight outcomes more luck than anything else which is really frustrating, especially when the last auto-save wasn't close.

NeRo
NeRo

Still a better love story than twilight, and that's it. The rest of the gameplay are just average at best. Controls are clunky & slow, game crashes quite alot and the side missions are mostly boring.

6/10 - Good but only buy it on sale.

The story and atmosphere carried this game for me. The combat jumps between average at best and a clunky mess. It's a Dark Souls stlye combat system but it doesn't even compare to the first Souls games, its no precise at all, weird skips and missing animations etc. This could be a very good game but the combat just drags it down so much.

circular
circular

This is not a bad game.
But it is short and imo there are some fundamental flaws that just can't be forgiven.

That is primarily that the combat and the story just don't work together.
One part of the game, the story part, is about being really careful who, when and why you kill someone. In between those parts you are roaming around the city free and obligated to kill what/- and whoever you encounter.
While you walk around and leave a trail of corpses you are constantly challenged to make ethical decisions about how named criminals and murderers survival is somehow important.

In the end the ethical dilemmas feel constructed and unintuitve. Seeing the outcome of ones actions realize themselves feels unsatisfying and you'll probably need a guide to tell you how to archieve a good result.
The mobs you encounter throughout the city just add nothing other than to you slow you down while you walk from location to location. Because of that I can't really recommend it. Take that aspect away and you probably have a solid foundation for a future game.

Prunebane
Prunebane

In short: stellar storytelling, great graphics, well-integrated character/sickness mechanic, decent combat. Some crashes (game, OS) - don't play it longer than like 2-3 hours at a time (if you can help it :D )

Practically every character, including side characters, were well written and each had their charm. The voice acting cast was perfect, both in colour and in wording. I really cannot praise the writing and execution of this game's story enough. It's a book's worth of content packed into a choose-your-adventure playable format.

Given that the story is the forte of this game, I'd rate it as "repeatable after ~a year passes". There are definitely choices to explore, but going through the same environment could get old, especially with how the early game locks you out of areas until you progress further.

The combat seems made for console/controller, but once you get a feel for it, it's actually not bad. I like the resistance system - impactful, but not invasive, and if you keep a keen eye to what enemies you're fighting, and what tools you have at your disposal, you won't have much problems.

Honestly, I've been looking forward to playing this game before it even came out. I'm so glad I finally played it and it was almost the vampire game I've always hoped for. I'm not quite fully satisfied but the game has made me so glad that it exists.

Estrobeda
Estrobeda

The story is good but the game is super buggy, if you press any of the WASD keys before the dialog is completely over, the character will move in that direction until you pretty much smash all the keys. Also if you die, theres a quite high risk of the game freezing at the loading screen and you have to kill the game and then restart it. Since the game has been around for such a long time now, I would have imagined that these issues would have been resolved a long time ago.

kathrrn

This game was like dark souls on easy mode but with Vampires. Very dope 9/10 because the camera and some combat mechanics are a little janked but if you're a person familiar with dark souls combat it shouldn't be a huge problem.

Damn_that_mash_looks_tasty
Damn_that_mash…

A good game to buy on sale.

I rather enjoyed feeling like I was playing a macabre version of Downton Abbey, conversing with well written characters, with decent voice acting. I like that your choices have consequences, and killing NPCs ripples through the community and has lasting effects. However I don't like how with most NPCs you meet you can't actually improve their shitty lives, you just sort of address their issues and walk away, unresolved.

The combat is okay I guess, nothing to write home about, it served its purpose. Unless you want to go on a killing rampage get ready to utilise 40% of your moveset for the entire game, because you have to kill to get decent XP.

I think in the end I got sick of having to talk to every NPC and exhaust all the dialogue options in their skill trees, especially when I know I ultimately can't actually do anything to help these people, all I can do is drink their blood and make them sad. ESPECIALLY when by the end of the game the NPC personalities got a little strange and unbelievable, like they were running out of good characters.

If you like story rich games with interesting themes (and vampires (sorry I mean Ekons)), like I said, this is worth picking up on sale. It was interesting enough for me to commit almost 40 hours to complete, so that's saying something.

This in my opinion is one of the best '''Vampire Simulator'' games out there, it really does make you feel like a creature of the night, with almost every NPC hanging by a thred that you alone will chose to cut if needed. This may overwhelm the player at the start, but the game is very very fun if one enjoys the story and the mechanic of being a bloodthirsty vampire or a good doctor. The game put's a lot of emphasis on your choices, every single decision has a purpose and affects the story, which shows how much the developers invested into this game. I give it a 8/10 because the traveling mechanics are quite annoying, and at times you have to travel very long distances fighting a lot of foes just to get to specific place.

You
You

For the most part, this game is great. Great storytelling and interesting characters, and a lot of morality-based decisions that have a real impact on how the game plays out and really forces the player to consider their actions carefully. Do you kill a confessed murderer who is the only one supporting his elderly mother, who in turn is the only one raising an orphaned teenager? There are tons of decisions like these throughout the game, and maintaining a no-kill playthrough is decidedly hard as a result.

However, the game also allows you to play it without killing fairly well. In my no-kill playthrough, I didn't feel like I was at a huge disadvantage for not killing any civilians, but the game is balanced well enough that it quickly becomes clear that you would be much, much stronger if you did. It's a unique approach that makes killing a civilian with a hefty amount of XP attached to them very tempting, without feeling like you're shooting yourself in the foot if you never embrace anyone.

The combat is nothing new, but is still fun, if not somewhat repetitive. Your abilities do make you feel like you're a vampire, but you have to learn to love dodging constantly. That said, when compared to other games with similar combat, this feels much clunkier.

The main problems are pretty much technical ones, such as the absolutely insane decision to have mouse movement tied to switching targets when you have one locked. The tiniest flinch of your wrist makes Dr. Reid flail around, stabbing the air towards an enemy while the one you were actually trying to hit whacks you from the side. What makes it worse is that this is one of the only control aspects you can't remap.

The autosave system is downright hubristic on part of the developers as well, and it is definitely the most frustrating aspect of the game for me. Not only does it mean that you have to completely replay the game if you want to try one thing slightly differently, but it assumes that things like bugged quests don't exist, and unfortunately I have definitely run into a couple. Thankfully, since this is on PC, you can find the files yourself and start backing them up, which I definitely recommend.

Overall though, the story, setting, and characters are enough to make me accept the technical problems with the game, but it does make me wish that certain things had been more polished.

tl;dr - It's a good game, but it could have been a GREAT game if it was just a little more polished and certain aspects had been thought through more.

What an amazing game that wasn’t talked about much on release. This easily beats out many AAA games. The atmosphere, music, graphics, gameplay, puzzles, character interaction, decision making, etc. was all on point. Your choices really do matter in this game, for better or worse.

The only thing I didn’t like was towards the end of the game it started crashing a lot. I didn’t have a single crash for the first 80% of the game. Then that last 20% it seemed to crash constantly. But I was able to get through it.

Definitely recommend and DEFINITELY when on sale.

at first i was really hesitant to buy this game because of the reviews but one day i said why not?? and even after six months or so i can't stop thinking about this game. sure it has some issues that could bother you if you're really that picky, but it's still quite enjoyable. the story felt so interesting to me, the atmosphere was just right and so gloomy and the soundtrack is just stunning, not to mention our johnny boy is simply quite lickable and such a great character. i don't call a game a fave just because, but this one is in my favorite games list. seriously don't listen to the bad reviews, buy this game on a sale and give it a try

Vampyr is a good game but it does have some flaws including parts of menus disappearing when you switch to them too fast. Camera switching to an enemy in the distance rather then the one in front of you or using an attack which complete misses and enemy if too close. Character sometimes stuck moving in a direction at random times fixed by going into menu and coming back out. But despite these flaws or glitches the game has great graphics and an even better story with a vary of good enemies including human and different types of Skals and other beings. Also has a good combat system and would very much recommend to anyone looking at buying this game.

* Unskippable & long opening
* Unskippable cutscenes, often in quick succession of each other
* Linear gameplay with little to no player agency
* Forced specific skill tree upgrades at the start
* Third person PoV always
* Fallout 4 style dialogue wheel, complete with bad dialogue representation
* Fallout 4 style character models
* Dialogue easily sequence broken
* All but mandatory character interactions.. Lots of them

There's likely more I could gripe about if I got even further in than the hospital at time of writing this.

The game makes a point of telling you that districts will become sicker if you kill people.
This only counts outside of combat areas, within combat areas, there's practically no choice but to kill people from the start, as the game kicks off running through what has become a combat zone, focused expressly on you.

The game actually has some good writing and lore.
It hamstrings itself with the way it chooses to deliver most it.

A more Dishonored approach would have been beneficial, with options for passive eavesdropping, multiple appraches via environment and to gaining information, actual implementation of stealth, and so on.
In fact if they'd just turned this into an open world Dishonored clone it'd have been perfect.

Meaning you had to read the notes if you want to be truly aware of your choices and the possible consequences. I almost got the best ending but I had to save a little girl from an insane mother.

Oh well, in the end the game was fun and simple to play.

I liked my play through
I wish more developers would take a stab at vampire immersive sims
I don't honestly feel compelled to return but if you're looking at this page and wondering if this might be for you at this point in time chances are high you may enjoy this

I started the game with very low level of expectation and GOD it just excited me from the beginning. Combat is so satisfying and with variety of weapons, skills and enemies it doesn't get too much repetitive.
In late-game stages, the game got a little frustrating cause I just wanted to finish all the side quests and find most of the facts about characters but still the ending was so great I just forgot my boredom.

Gauss Gun
Gauss Gun

I so wanted to like this, but the gameplay was just too cumbersome for me. The world map is like a maze and there is no fast travel. After a few trips between districts, I was too bored to pursue side quests that had me going far with respawning enemies in the way.
The loading times are slow, which is super annoying when you suddenly enter a door that (without warning) takes you to a loading-screen.

It was fun for me but I have some points:
+Story is good
+Plenty of NPCs
+Skills are OK
+Lots of dialogs and choices (it might be bad for some people)
+Multiple endings
+Very good voice actors
+London atmosphere

-Fights becomes dull after a while
-Not enough weapons in my opinion
-No fast travel (you have to run the whole city every time)
-Side quests give little XP

Q: How long does it take a vampire doctor to violate the Hippocratic Oath?
A: ...about twenty seconds!

I love vampire stuff. Anne Rice, VtM - I even watched all the Twilight movies. They're a bit melodramatic and fanciful, but there's so much in vampire stories that I like - life and death, love and hate, responsibility and consequence. Who is the hunter and who is the hunted? Who is the saint and who is the sinner? Is there anything to love in the monstrous?

These core conceits have always fascinated me and this game manages to put them front and centre. Life as a vampire doctor in plague-ridden London is easier the more people you eat, but if you eat the wrong people or too many, bad things happen. Of course, there's a plague going on, and people might die of sickness...and then you wouldn't get to eat them at all! So you've got to run all over town with your doctor's bag helping people get better...and then you can eat them.

Or, of course, you could play the Good Doctor and only kill in self-defense...in which case, you'll stay puny and weak. Still, there are rewards for not partaking in the sweet red nectar. The less you kill civilians, the more social gameplay there is, and the better ending you get.

This makes the gameplay a bit of a peculiar beast, seeing as the game's systems seem designed to reward you for depriving yourself. That's not a particularly engaging way to play an RPG, and indeed, this is an RPG only in the barest sense. Though you can choose skills on level up, the balance is all shot to pieces. Most of the combat is front loaded in the early game and is quite clunky.

The clunkiness doesn't end there. Though the story is quite good (and hits a little different after COVID), Dishonored did it already and better. The game is utterly riddled with bugs, and aspects of the UI are clearly undercooked. There are four endings, but neither of them are particularly compelling (and they all force a het romance, which I find unforgivable in my RPGs). London's streets can be a bit byzantine and frustrating.

These problems prevent this from being a AA game, but it still deserves your time. The world is haunting, the characters compelling, and the boss fights pure gothic brilliance. If you like vampires at all, give this a go.

Its not a bad game but it could had been better. Story is alright, a little bit boring sometimes. Combat is weird and repetitive.

Vampyr certainly struggles in the technical department, in this case, it's the gameplay itself. It has a difficult learning curve and can be very frustrating (if you want casual), as sometimes you don't find the people you need for the quests, navigation system can get confusing.

The story, world-building, character development, and roleplaying potential in this game are all amazing.

I find it kind of repetitive and boring. The story is not too bad but not too good. Overall Average.

This game is trash, I was somewhat interested when I started. They say your choices have consequences and okay fine, but to totally ruin certain paths with no way to go back with save states is irritating. Fine, was playing the game and saw that you could redo your skills and I was doing a good play through so you don't level up as quick. So I figured re-tool some of what I learned and go from there. Was at level 12 brought me down to a level 1 and couldn't put my xp into anything. With all of the smaller annoyances and the fact that most enemies were at level 10 or higher I just can't. Screw this game

Pretty great so far! Only on Chapter 3. The characters are diverse. There is a lot of dialog as well, but it keeps it interesting. I enjoy the maps design and feel - I have run down random alleys and found lore and named enemies to fight which is neat. I like the choice system when choosing who the embrace. If you like a good story driven RPG with some decent combat this is a good game for you!

Nice story, great characters, solid voice acting, dense atmosphere and several good ideas. Oh, and it has combat mechanics. Yeah.
If you like the idea of playing of playing a 1920 surgeon turned vampire investigating murders and weird occurrences during the Spanish flu epidemic then this is your jam! Especially if you like games like Call of Cthulhu or other mystery solving games (Vampyr has nothing to do with Lovecraft! However, it played similarly for a good amount of the time).

At its best it is a mystery adventure with a bunch of decisions that affect... well little to be true (some mysteries are being locked if you pick the wrong choice, but nothing vital). It would help if the devs had the time and money to include proper facial expressions since most of the time you'll spend talking to people and trying to find out who's lying to you.

At its worst its some beat'em up with a few fun ideas but overall wonky mechanics that don't add up properly. If you want to get through this as swift as possible reduce the 'difficulty' level, max out hp and stamina and upgrade your weapon as much as possible. Also, there is a power that lets you skip a bunch of random fights.
Fortunately, I felt like fights only happen now and then I was not too annoyed by it. I appreciate they tried to do something different, but I hope, should there be a Vampyr 2 that they might return to the drawing board on this one.

Tl;dr:
Liked the story, liked the characters, voice acting, art and atmospher. The premise was great and some of the vampire-mechanics are super fun!
The game would have been even more fun with proper facial expression and let's not talk too much about the combat, thanks.

I have just finished playing for the fourth time. Unlocked all but 2 achievements (Collecting all Melee Weapons, and Not killing any NPCs) so there are 2 more play troughs in the future for me. Game was fun and enjoyable as the first time, and, after a short break, I will be happy to jump into it again! And maybe try some new abilities and not keep stunning everything, biting and using a Shadow and Blood abilities all the time- But I wouldn't put my money on this, as the Ekon are creatures of habit.

In the meantime, I will be sipping on this glass of Bloo.. errr... Red Wine, and enjoy the night sky.

Dr. Reid: I was in the war in France.

Play the game for the story. It's worth it. Investigative style story telling. Lots of talking to people if you're into that story building play style. The combat is a little lackluster but that isn't why I played it. Wish there was a fast travel. But overall, good game. You feel the weight of your choices and you question your decisions. I hope there is a sequel at some point.

They should have focused on either making a story game or a combat game not this sometimes awful chimera.

Xengre

Good idea, dreadful execution.

I've finished the majority of the game on my no kill playthrough, also my first playthrough. Here are my thoughts:

Story - miserably uninteresting. What you're actually here for is the world and its various character plots. Unfortunately, these are not much better. Nearly every existing character is screwed up in some way. There are almost no 'normal' characters in this world. I'd go so far as to say 'almost' everyone is either a terrible person, or at the very least not that good of a person. I do not feel passion from this story but as if it was just something acting as a means to an ends to support the world/gameplay elements.

Lore - they try. They certainly do, but it is rarely applied in a meaningful way and just serves as a backdrop to a rather flat story and cast.

Characters - Terrible if I were to be completely frank. They're all quite terrible, aside from the main character, Elizabeth, and Charlotte to an extent... but they have their own problems. Perhaps my biggest issue is this romance that sweeps in from total left field and is so awkward and unbelievable I can't help but laugh. Perhaps there was suppose to be so much more to the story but it got cut in development so this didn't develop properly, like at all...? One could only wonder, but I legitimately could not understate how nonsense the romance is.

Gameplay - Playing most of the game in vampiric vision mode to see enemies, that can teleport and do massive dmg so they don't get the drop on you, and for finding NPCs, blood, and other stuff is a real downer. They could have designed the vampiric senses so much better. This severely hurts the game's atmosphere and enjoyability and leaves you half blind due to the grayscale visuals in a dark world. Loot and finding stuff is a seriously uninteresting loop. NPC quests is simply as bland and seemingly unrewarding as it gets never once feeling worth my time or interest.

Combat - Doing a pacifist playthrough means you are cranking up the difficulty because almost all of the exp is from feeding on finite named NPCs. NPCs are worth a rather extreme amount of exp to the point of total overkill. Meanwhile a pacifist run might earn the exp of 5-10 NPCs in an entire playthrough. A rather staggering difference. Despite this, most of the upgrades are actually rather terrible so this doesn't impact difficulty much as the game remains quite easy even as pacifist. Often a base point or two in something is all that really matters and beyond that is a waste. Exceptions are health and stamina, both of which are absolutely mandatory to heavily upgrade and make massive difference despite being passive elements. Take the offensive skills for instance. They have nice damage, or so they appear, but the scaling is heinous after the first point despite the amount of exp required to level them further. The final upgrade is merely "soso" despite being a considerable upgrade from the immediate prior skill level indicating just how poor scaling is until that final upgrade. That final upgrade is also locked behind character level so you can't even rush it meaning even earlier in the game it isn't good to learn them aside from 1-2 points. Most skills, including the AoE shadow skill, are simply inferior to melee weapons and guns which do really strong dmg when upgraded properly and are simply superior later on. You're better off simply rushing health + stamina to absolute max and then health recovery meaning virtually all unique vampire skills/tactics are moot in a vampire game even if you did have the exp. Combat is basic attack/dodge loops and there really isn't a ton of thought necessary on how to proceed. There are a ton of rather considerable flaws with the combat I could nitpick but I can't be bothered to waste my time here.

Bugs - This game has too many glitches all this time later. They're small ones but they are annoying. The worst one I encountered was the no rats bug and the face away from enemy bug which couldn't be fixed without dying (no matter lock/unlock my character would always forcibly face away from the enemy during one encounter and I thus couldn't actually hit them so I had to eventually just let them kill me to fix it).

The game feels like a prototype for an idea that could have been more and thus feels unfinished along with the clearly missing quality unenjoyable enough that I don't think I will finish the last little chunk of the game. I cannot recommend the game. Maybe they will improve on their next title, but the lack of passion here leaves me doubtful.

I feel like i was waiting for this game and didnt know it. the atmosphere of this game is amazing, the storyline (while predictible at times) is wonderful and engaging. the charectors are fantastic and i actualy give a shit what happens to them.
the settings are wonderfuly crafted and have their own feel to each of them, social structier and evrything.
THE VOICE ACTING!!! i am bad to get realy dissapointed in the voice acting with games, but this game sounds incredible. the distiction and variety of voices and clairty in diction relay pleased me. also the main has suuuuuuch a nice voice to listen to

i want more games like this. lots more. this is evrything iv been looking for but didnt know i was looking for it.

im orthigraphicly dissabled and normaly dont review due to writing diffucultiys without my VOC system. im reviewing this anyway because its damn worth it.

This is the WoD 1918 year Vampire game you would like to play. There are sooo many easter eggs in this jewel of a game. I wager they have initially prepared this to be a WoD funded game but got rejected so they published with a different company and altered certain titles and names, but everything you are looking for from a WoD Vampire game is right there. THere are no clans ofc but there are different vampire species.

I finished the game in 45 hours, took me some days though cause i played slowly 2 - 3 hours every day. It's gloomy, dark and gritty. The key npcs in each district has his own story and background, some have an investigation to offer which offers some xp, loot and most importantly lore and feeling. Within this timeframe i was able to collect 95% of the collectibles, I just left this achievement on my next run, next time.
This was also the good ending I experienced, at least that's how I felt it given the fact you are a Vampire in a city under a pandemic situation :P I know there is 1 more for certain.

If this was a film I would review it as Dramatic Thriller. The game presents all the suffering and troubles of a young vampire, and if played in higher difficulty you will learn to fear the vampire hunters and avoid them if possible. There are a few twists and turns and at some points you can never be sure which is the "correct" choise. I use brackets because this is about what sort of vampire you want to play. The mass murderer who craves absolute power? The one who feeds selectively on the scum of each district? The purist who took an oath never to drink blood and made it to the end of the story with only the XP provided by investigations and healing the sick? Who will you spare and who will you consume? For not all are worthy to be left among the living and some you may encounter dying may deserve the second chance of Immortality.

This game has it's way to reward you through conversation and interaction with the world and combat.

Final Verdict : 8/10
There are many good story driven games, this one is among the finnest in my oppinion if you like the gameplay and the early slow progression of the story. When all Investigation are done then you go main as a rollercoster. Your choises matter on how you experience to how the game ends.
