Game is pretty, nice ambience and graphics.
But holy shit the gameplay is boring. The character is too slow for a map that big and a fucking labyrinth, the objectives are as clear as swamp water and the resource managing thing seems so unecessary...

4/10, looks nice, terrible gameplay

1337haXXor

8/10.

Overall, really good if you like single player horror games.

Pros:
* Graphics are really nice.
* Story is pretty intense.
* Pretty long story overall, compared to many similar games.
* Well done puzzles, and lots of neat easter eggs.
* Absolutely terrifying. Like any game, some will say "it's not scary, what do you mean," but I play in the dark, by myself, volume cranked. I want to be as scared as possible, and this one definitely delivers.

Cons:
* Controls are.. Weird. They work once you get the flow of it, but I can't help imaging there must've been a much easier way of doing it.
* The puzzles are challenging, but doable. But at some points it's very difficult to figure out where to go. Better than habd-holding, but still a but tough.
* Movement speed is just a tad slow. Couple this with the longer gameplay (which is good) and the frustration of getting lost, not knowing where to go, and/or backtracking, you end up losing a few hours overall just wandering.
* Overall, the story is great and really well done, but there are just a couple.. Meh moments. A but cringey, over-the-top, etc.
* Definitely some bugs. Nothing game-breaking, but sometimes you'll crash on retry, things won't activate, and other small optimization issues. It seems like things that could be fixed in one pass, though I believe the developers are finished with the game. Again, nothing too bad, but it could be a source of frustration.

Visage gets things rolling at a feverpitch. You are immediately put in the metaphorical driver’s seat of Dwayne Anderson, a feller with a penchant for bounding his loved ones to chairs and blindfolding and gagging them, the lovable scamp! In the opening scene, we see him shoot and kill his helpless family at point blank range with a revolver as their muffled screams become increasingly desperate. Once that nasty business is out of the way, Dwayne then points the barrel at himself and pulls the trigger. With so much finality in the opening scene, you could not be blamed for thinking, ‘Wait, that’s it?’ Oho, but you’d be wrong. We’re just getting started, it turns out!

After presumably having snuffed out his own brief candle, Dwayne awakens and stumbles his way out of a white room festooned with blood and into an architectural nightmare of a house. Jeez, Louise! The twists and turns on this house. The staircases! The nonsensical way that every wing of the house seems to be accessible from everywhere else. The game requires you to find key items at certain points in order to advance the story, which proves difficult when you can’t find your way around this labyrinthine structure.

Now a lot has already been said about this spiritual successor to PT. I’ve seen many a streamer put out a clip of a rootin’ tootin’ good jump scare. In short, there’s a lot the devs did really well. The game is a master class in psychological horror. From the increasingly unnerving phone calls from your next door neighbor Rose to the constant threat of various presences lurking about, this game will relentlessly keep you on edge until the bitter f*cking end. But the most impressive aspects of the horrorscape are definitely the various scenes constructed from the horrifying psyches of the house’s former occupants. Just think of Dolores’s circle of mirrors. Absolutely brilliant. Well done.

I could go on about the various merits of this game, but I’m not here to do that. Shocking, I know, but I do like to play the contrarian. For those of you who know my thoughts on the FF7 Remake, this should come as no surprise. Visage is 100% worth playing. Worth the price? Debatable. It is a worthy entry in the horror genre and deserves the praise it gets as one of the best out there right now. However, let’s talk about a few glaring issues.

First and foremost, the movement is incredibly clunky. Being Dwayne Anderson is no walk in the park. Perhaps that’s why he gone and did what he did. Dwayne has two hands and only two. Don’t you forget it! The game sure won’t let you. Trying to negotiate various held items with an insanely limited inventory is a chore in and of itself. Now couple that with unique button inputs for using items in each hand, for switching which hands are holding each item, and for storing and/or switching out an item from your inventory. Oh my god. We have so many adequate examples of how to do inventory in gaming. I thought we had evolved past this. The GAME is set in 1985. That doesn’t mean our UI has to be as well… Okay, rant over.

Well, not over. Rant redirected! To what, you ask? To interacting with the world. And if the above criticism is any indication, interacting with the game world is also an absolute chore. Let’s just get this out of the way. Unless it’s a VR-exclusive game, we don’t need to have push and pull mechanics in play for doors and cabinets, etc. But what about realism?! F*ck your realism. It’s never going to feel like opening or closing something, so let’s just cut the charade and have a simple button input for Chrissake! There are also game-breaking glitches that prevent the retrieval of items or the activation of an in-game event.

Second, let’s talk about the warning message the devs give you at the start of this game. It reads, “Visage is hard. Patience, through investigation, and good resources management are your best friends. Good luck…” As cute as this message is, it comes off as more of an excuse from the devs than a well-intentioned public service announcement. What I mean is, it seems more like the devs absolve themselves of the crime of a lack of clarity at parts on how to advance the game. I’m not dumb. I know I joke a lot about my smooth brain. But this game made me feel like an absolute buffoon. There are plenty of examples of how to do this right. Silent Hill 3’s highest difficulty setting for puzzles comes to mind. But almost no direction from the game world and a sprawling environment (and the absence of a map, mind you) do not make a game “hard,” they make it infuriating. I should not be yelling to my audience, “Somebody help me solve this so I can get to the scary part!” That’s not challenging, that’s poor design.

Finally, I want to talk about the writing. We all know that my least favorite character in a horror game or story is a white man battling his own demons of alcoholism and mental illness. God, enough already. Though it’s not the devs’ fault. Just follow my complex web of red thread all the way back to Stephen King’s prolific writing career at the center. I’m honestly impressed by how literally anyone can do a better job with his IPs than he could ever do. But these cliché sad sacks are everywhere in the horror genre, and I just have no more sympathy to give them, and I certainly have no interest in “hearing Dwayne out” re: the whole brutally murdering his family thing.

Furthermore, any of the other characters are far more compelling than our protagonist. I mean, we have a little girl who listens to the sage advice of a demon, an elderly woman who descends into an overprotective, paranoid madness with her baby at the center of it, and a man in his prime who suffers from scopophobia. Take your pick. Literally any of these characters would have made for a more interesting protagonist. But again, this begs the question: what binds these characters together and why is Dwayne at the center? Well, as it turns out, Dwayne used to be a scientist who worked for the CIA. During his employment, he went to various psych wards and administered LSD as treatment for various mental illnesses. Lucy, Dolores, and Rakan are among the subjects who were administered this treatment and suffered disastrous effects as a result. Not only that, but apparently all 3 of these people also lived in this house at one time or another. The circumstances all seem a little too convenientand overly-simplistic in terms of justifying the narrative and the horrifying phenomena.

And again, I had the same complaint with Layers of Fear. Unless you have a truly groundbreaking and compelling story, leaving it up to the player to piece together the story is just a bad idea. I don’t care enough about putting in all that effort for a story that really isn’t saying anything all that novel. Let’s contrast that with Fatal Frame. Similarly, there’s a lot of digging around required by the player in order to piece things together. But it’s all so enthralling, that you don’t need to twist my arm to do it. The story of Visage just doesn’t do it for me. And, for the love of God, how many holes do we have to fall down in this game? Is that literally your one trick to signal to the player that we’re descending deeper into the horrifying madness?!

Having said all that, Visage is an excellent game. There are bugs, sure. The writing isn’t anything … well … to write home about. But you’re gonna need a change of trousers for this one.

Easily the scariest game I've ever played. Probably spent half my playtime in the pause menu freaking out and trying to work up the courage to keep going further. It has some of the best atmosphere I've seen in a horror game. There's very few cheap scares and it's more about the building sense of dread and worrying about what might happen. There's so many subtle things that just throw you off and make you feel uneasy - some you might not even notice are happening.

As others have said, the game is fairly difficult, but not as hard as people seem to claim. In my opinion, if you pay attention, fully explore and observe the details, and most importantly REMEMBER things you find and need in the future or have to return to, it's not super difficult. If you manage your sanity well by staying near lights and using pills, you can possibly avoid ever dying fairly easily. You just have to take advantage of the things you're given to survive.

The few downsides for me are the cutscene/animations are a bit awkward as your character decides to shove his face into whatever you're interacting with. You also don't see your hands doing anything so items will just float in front of you and be magically moved, but you forget this is happening rather quickly. The game also has a pretty clunky inventory system, though I suspect this is intentional since having to fumble around with getting the correct items out definitely contributes to the panic that is always present in the game.

Overall, I would easily recommend this to any horror fans and I can't wait to see what else these devs are able to come up with.

Good indie horror game and worth a playthrough at least once. The first couple of chapters were amazing but after those it kind of dropped off. Finished the game in 10 hours.

Tedium is not the same as unconventional difficulty, and flickering lights/closing doors is not the same as building tension.

Admittedly, the house is designed well. The rooms are all very distinguishable from one another and easy to remember, which is important in a game where you constantly have to navigate and run to specific areas. Chapter 1 is also okay, but at no point feels like a unique experience, as everything from the scares to the ghost designs have all been seen before.

After chapter 1 finishes, the game derails and becomes much messier. The ghost designs become even less intimidating, the puzzles become more convoluted, and less time is spent in the house. The final chapter in particular is a low point, as the game decides to place all of its cards on the main character and the story, the two aspects of the game I cared about the least.

The general reception for this game seemed positive, so I was excited to play, but was greatly disappointed overall.

It's my favorite horror game since SOMA. It's not as intellectual as SOMA, but what it does it does really well. My only disappointment is that it is NOT VR. Especially because it was supposed to have VR support and the devs just dropped it. Why? Make this game absolute. Make this game THE horror experience. Bring it to VR.

the real nightmare is trying to play this garbage. Don't expect P.T. Silent Hills

A nice start! a big house that is scary and have a really bizarre beggining with the suicide scene, But what it seemed to be a really good game turned into a huge fucking nightmare of bad puzzles and a really bad level design, making you walking through a lot of really stupid corridors escaping monsters that have no reason to be there and putting yourself through some huge stress.

Not even using Cheat Engine to noclip through the enemies made the game better.

Don't buy it. Watch the cutscenes on youtube and call it quits.

PS.: in other words: the game is supposed to be a "slow paced puzzle"

but the thing is: It's TOO slow and the animations... oh the goddamn animations... when a monster kills you, you gotta wait for that loud-ass stress inducing 15 second animation EVERY TIME.

its bad. thats when i started using no clip. i didnt wanted to die anymore not because its scary to die, but because it takes away the scary immersion and turns fear into pure stress and anger. with no way to escape a ghost, at least let us play an easy mode with no monsters like layers of fear 2.

gameplay: starts a 8/10 and gets boring to the point of it becoming a 4/10
time of game: 4/10 (long senseless chapters with surrealistic corridors that add nothing to the story).

The setting and the jumpscares are AMAZING! The only things i have to complain about is 1. the item management (which is terrible) and 2. maybe a questlog? or just some hints where to go or what you have to do, that would´ve been nice.
But overall it was an amazing experience!

Kinda weird that this game as a whole isn't very scary, but I've never been more scared while playing a game than I have while playing this one. I think it plays on the fears I had as a child like when I'd turn the light off at night then sprint down the now-dark hallway to my room. The feeling of something being desperately wrong with a modern home(one that feels familiar, but you know isn't) can be so terrifying. A good example of that is PT. This game feels like a successor to PT honestly.

The camera part was a familiar mechanic that was done very well, absolutely terrifying. The breathing demon that would follow you when the lights went out was a very well done scare as well.

I had to quit out of fear multiple times playing this game, and I've honestly never done that with any other horror game before or since.

8/10 Terrifying horror game that uses familiar mechanics, but uses them well.

The SCARIEST horror game I've ever played with a deep story to accompany it with. They really nailed the whole psychological part leaving me panicking in the pause screen LMAO. As of today I finished the game and i recommended it 100%. Would I play it again?....HELL NO. But amazing work guys!

The fantastic atmosphere constructed of fear and dread in this game goes to waste entirely when the developer realized they wanted to make a hardcore obtuse puzzle game instead. The fact that they specifically weasel their way around actually saying this on the store page is telling. They know.

Of course horror games go hand in hand with these elements, but there is no balance here whatsoever. Consider me BTFO, filtered and most importantly, thoroughly deceived.

If you're looking for a creepy horror experience, Visage is a good buy. Technical performance is good, it does have quite a number of gameplay issues but those are not serious enough to ruin the game.

Pros:
- Excellent horror experience without overdoing it
- Great graphics, sound design and voice acting
- Feels like an escape room
- Good amount of content and variety to keep things interesting

Cons:
- Inconvenient controls and inventory management are really unnecessary
- Cryptic puzzles or weird "video game logic"
- Level design of the main house
- Chases in the main house are unfair
- Needle in a haystack situations

Wrt the chases: yes, you will get chased and die if you get caught, but there are so many situations (thanks to slow movement and level design of the main house) where you start off cornered with no escape or you get stuck in the environment, making these chases unfair. Players should die when they make a mistake but Visage will kill you off at random. However the game does not set you back or punish you if you die, you resume at the last checkpoint so although really annoying this flaw is forgivable.

Some parts of the script are way too cryptic, I do not expect a lot of players to make it through without a guide. In some cases the devs were aware that it is too cryptic and they "solved" it by simply telling you the problem/solution and that is disappointing.

However, since the horror experience is REALLY good (without going into detail) it is definitely worth recommending. I felt that consulting a guide did not ruin the game for me.

This game has so much potential, if you can manage to stomach the story that it tells. The jump scares aren't overdone and it does a good job of keeping you on edge throughout. The story is definitely intense and very dark at points, so certainly not for everyone. And I'll admit, it definitely does go a little overboard with the puzzles, which without some guidance along the way probably would have irritated me to the point where it wouldn't have been been all that scary or unsettling anymore, it would have just been annoying. So that's certainly not something it has going for it if you're not someone who's big on puzzles in games. Also, it appears that you can't manually save after finishing the three main chapters? I've tried closing and restarting the game and once I'm back in, the save option is still grayed out. This is really annoying since I'd like to create a separate save file so I can get both endings, because I have zero desire to work through the whole game a second time just to get the alternate ending. It's simply not worth that much work. Instead I had to go in and manually backup my save file to another device. As far as getting the "void" ending, the process is ridiculously repetitive, and there doesn't seem to be any real point or reason for it, and frankly it's just flat our disgusting that they make you repeat the process over and over several times just to get the achievement. They'd have been better off just sticking with the intended "good" ending. Another major drawback is the game freezing. Three times now during load screens the game has froze to the point where I can't even close it to restart and instead have to restart my entire computer. This isn't an issue I've had with any other game and after browsing reviews and forums, it looks like it isn't an uncommon issue with this game. It's a major downfall and until it's looked into and fixed, and because of that, couples with the other issues mentioned, I can't give it a recommend.

Very good lengthy horror game. Lots of puzzles and yes frustrating moments, but overall, I'm fairly impressed. I've been spooked a few different times and not many games can do that. I don't think the game is all bad. The grandma chapter was enjoyable to play, original and good at guiding you from one item to the next. Now for the rest of it...not so much.
80% of your time you'll spend looking for an oddly located key that you missed, while being punished relentlessly for exploring. You really have no idea what to do or where to go most of the game.
It's a bummer that the scarier parts are pretty much ripoffs of PT and Silent Hill, without nearly as much impact or meaning. The imagery too. Wheelchairs, umbilical cords, chained doors, a creature emerging from a stain on the wall, blurry spinning heads, all copies from Silent Hill.
The grandma chapter was pretty much the only time it felt like they were trying something original.
Not a total waste of time, but not as good as people claim this to be.

Game has puzzles with incredibly specific solutions. You may find many approaches that are more logical than the real solution, but you are constantly forced to find the exact item required to move forward. This leads to a frustrating gameplay experience that sometimes involved literally staring at every inch of every polygon on the level until you fight the right piece of trash to interact with.

Erete35

is this blatantly a bad game? no, it's not. but after playing for about 2-3 hours and completing only one of the chapters, which I basically forced myself to do after about an hour in, I can say that this game has some key issues. the biggest being that making progress is in a lot of situations is just counter intuitive. it was so bad that in 2 areas where your trapped in a fairly small location, I spent enough time in the area to explore it to the point where I knew every detail of the map, only to realize something was expected that had never applied to any part of the game prior mechanically, with no prompts or indication it was the right thing to do (I'd get more specific but I want to avoid spoilers for those that may want to play it). I essentially had to look up a guide 3 times in just the one chapter I did, and the solutions were total BS in my opinion. if the game needs a guide just because of it being counter intuitive, that's just bad game design. it's also worth pointing out as far as horror went, most of the scares were predictable and not really scary to me. and the game had a lot of trigger warning for very controversial things in that short time too. great art project but that's what this feels like at best

Visage is a very well crafted game that many would consider to be very scary.

While playing through it I got heavy Silent Hill The Room mixed with PT vibes. Which is an excellent combination in my opinion. If you are looking for a scary game to dive into, you will not be disappointed with the purchase.

The one major criticism I have of the game is that their inventory system is pretty wonky. A word of advice too, switch to simplified door interactions in the settings, it makes opening doors and drawers infinitely easier.

Swinging lamp.

As the Congressional Debate over gun control flares up yet again, we regret to report the murder of the wife and her two children by their husband and father. The father purchased the rifle used in the crime at his local gunstore two days earlier. This brutal killing took place while the family was gathered at home on a Sunday afternoon. The day of the crime, the father went to the trunk of his car, retrieved the rifle, and shot his wife as she was cleaning up the kitchen after lunch. When his ten-year-old son came to investigate the commotion, the father shot him, too. His six-year-old daughter had the good sense to hide in the bathroom, but reports suggest he lured her out by telling her it was just a game. The girl was found shot once in the chest from point-blank range. The mother, who he shot in the stomach, was pregnant at the time. Police arriving on-scene after neighbors called 911 found the father in his car, listening to the radio. Several days before the murders, neighbors say they heard the father repeating a sequence of numbers in a loud voice. They said it was like he was chanting some strange spell. There was another family shot to death in the same state last month, and in December last year, a man used a rifle and meat cleaver to murder his entire family. In each case, the perpretrators were fathers. State police say the string of domestic homicides appears unrelated, though it could be part of a larger trend, such as employment, childcare, and other social issues facing the average family.

I am 30y/o, not scared of ghost anymore, i think phasmophobia solo is pretty decent but not that scary. i finished pretty much every *popular* horror games (all the RE, silent hill, amnesia, Penumbra, soma and a tons of other Indie horror games...) but this game... it creep me the fuck up, i am not saying i was not scared in some of the game mentioned above but ive always manage to finish them, but Visage, i have around 8hrs of playtime and i bought the game like 2 years ago. Not because the game is bad...

The reason is im too fucking scared! i can't even finish this game! Hell! i cant even finish ONE episode! I think i know why, the graphics, the tension and the sounds, the sounds are on the fucking point, this is the definition of Nightmarish ASMR. the footstep, the cracking, the breathing... everything is fucking perfect, the story is creep as fuck... like, just watch the first 3 minutes of the game... you'll be like : what the fucking fuck is fucking going on! There is jumpscare (as every horror games existing since ever) but i feel like they're not overused, they dont rely on Jumpscare to build the tension, the tension is there all the time. It is actually the atmosphere that is making me stop playing!

It seems that a lot of people dislike the inventory system, i actually like it, i feel like they did this clusterfuck on purpose to really increase the feeling of oppresion, you dont have the space, changing items is complicated, you are gonna drop your lighter when you need it the most, etc etc... just like you would in real life if a murdering son of a bitch with claws doing weird sounds would try to kill you...

For me this game is a solid 10/10 in the survival horror category.
If i did not convince you yet, i bought the game on Xbox as well, i paid TWICE for this fucking game that ill never finish because i dont have enough underwear.
If still not convince, if you look at my first achievement of the game i tried to leave trough the front door, THE FUCKING FRONT DOOR!!! MY FIRST REACTION WAS TO GTFO THE HOUSE FROM THE FRONT DOOR!!!

This game has the potential to be a good game but it lacks any direction which makes it too tedious and takes the fun out of it. It's just plain frustrating and boring to go around in circles especially in the dark. I'd rather play a 5 hour fun game than a 12 hour annoying game.

This game is a borderline-incomprehensible fever dream. If you are looking for a cohesive and "satisfying" plot, this isn't it. If you are looking for a surreal, textural, and interpretive arthouse experience that will possibly make you vomit, shit, and cry (simultaneously), this is it.

I play a lot of horror games, and I don't think I've ever been more tense and stressed out than when playing this game. This game is pure stress. This game makes me actively want to throw up. I shudder when I think about it. It was extremely hard to get through, not in terms of difficulty but in terms of sheer willpower. It's excellent.

TL;DR: First 8 hours are a good horror experience. The Last 4 invalidate the first 8.

With it's complete ignorance of level design, the introduction of mechanics with no explanation or prior examples, the entire hospital section full of cliche and pointless sections, and uselessly long (My "Favorite" part of the Hospital is when you have to crouch to get through a crowd. Never hinted at. Big open area that you'd expect to find a solution in. You could simply walk past them in an earlier area. Had to look up a guide. The answer was a feel bad "How was I supposed to figure THAT out?!"). I would buy this on sale at a hefty markdown, and only place the Dolores and Lucy chapters, and look up a lets-play for the rest.

A shame is, the first 8 hours PROVED to me this was a good game, with glimpses of potential for it being a great game.

VanishedArmy
VanishedArmy

I played this before the game was officially finished and just now restarted.

I have a serious love hate here, the game is creepy as hell, and it does that part AMAZINGLY. However, the one thing that drives me nuts is the serious lack of direction. You are tossed in the game with absolutely no tutorial of anything, which ok, I don't expect my hand to be held but literally walking in circles trying to find the next objective is tedious and does get aggressively annoying.

I should not NEED to look up a guide to the game to simply play it and thus enjoy it. Otherwise you are literally walking around and/or picking up anything you see hoping to trigger the next step, and you have no idea if you actually really did anything correct.

I give the game a 50/50 score overall as it really does scare the daylights out of me, but I am overly annoyed that a guide is generally needed to make sure I'm going in the right direction.

So all in all I say play it, but you will need a guide or you will quickly not like it. I don't feel mean enough to thumbs down.

Too slow for me unfortunately. The graphics and the ambiance are great, atmosphere is super creepy.

Not a fan of jumpscares but there's no game without them right ^^

The animations are super dragged out. When you click something where the character has to do something, it takes forever every time. I get that the game wants to show how the character crawl under something, removes something etc but it's like watching a 5 mins movie just for that.

The house is really big and easy to get lost in. I wish I had way better sense of location but for me, it makes me a bit frustrated.

The mechanics to hold and drop things are really confusing. They are not what other games are using so it has a bit of a learning curve which only adds to the frustration.

I wish the things above was fixed and that you could have a map, then I would def enjoy the game. I'm disappointed that I don't. I played 9 hours and have not finished the game. Tried to play it through twice but I just can't.

It's really great otherwise. Just not for me apparently.

I am not over yet BUT this game is amazing! I know a lot of horror games try to get the psychological side of horror and this one takes the crown. The constent sense of danger and vulnerability keeping you on edge is so good. I never played or watched something that scares me as much as this. Even when you expect a jumpscare it still get the best of you each time.

The sensitive subjects and even dark turns makes this game unique and very immersive. The story exploration leaves you with so many questions that yu want to find even more and keep playing until you are done.

The brain burning puzzles forcing you to try everything possible until you find the right solution. I can't get enough of this game.

This game is not for the faint of heart. Probably the best horror game I've ever had the pleasure, and regret, of experiencing. Most horror games have to give an anxiety warning and such, I do recommend taking this one's seriously as this game is incredibly well built. I can happily say this game is worth the $35. The graphics are beautifully done, the scares and events are amazing. 10/10 for horror in my opinion. I planned on playing through it more, however, the game is quite anxiety inducing.

Constantyne
Constantyne

One of the scarier games I've played in a while. Absolutely recommend if you're a horror fan, especially if you enjoy ghost stories.

The good:
Beautiful graphics.
Amazing atmosphere.
Very good scares without relying on jump scares.
Puzzles are mostly pretty good.
Story for two of the three chapters is pretty good.
Awesome surreal bits

Over all, feels like if Phasmophobia had an actual solo campaign and decided to get really trippy on you.

The Cons:
The "Meta" story is a bit cliche and easy to figure out ahead of time if you pay attention.
One of the chapters feels very "Let's check all the horror tropes"-ish. I mean, come on, how many times are we gonna have to run from Samara/Sadako?
Some of the puzzles feel like they operate on "Moon logic." For example, one particular puzzle was to open a hatch in the ceiling. Which apparently can only be done with a hook, despite the game providing you with a stepladder. I get that it's a puzzle, but it felt really weird to me that I couldn't stand on a stepladder to reach something high. It also required you backtrack to pretty much the start of the game, but gave no clue as to the fact that's where you needed to go.
The game makes basically no effort to direct you where to go next sometimes.
The game expects you to painstakingly go through every draw, cabinet and closet for some items, which can be very tedious if you're doing it the first time.

Over all, I'd give it a 8/10. Despite the endings being very eh and a few other gripes, this was all in all one of the best horror games I've played in a minute. Recommended!

This one was recomended by one of my steam freinds, and considering I'm OBSESSED! with anything even a billionth of a % like my favorite game series, Evil Within, I thought why not? Controls felt a tad clunky at first, but a quick visit to mouse sensivity corrected that. The most challanging thing besides gameplay was figuring out the inventory system. You have "disposable items" and always want to have at least one type on you at all times. As you progress, certain areas are once and done, so its always nice to be able to pick stuff up in these areas, saveing items laying around in the main always accessable areas for use later. Sanity is a real threat in this game, like Amnesia's dark Descent.

The story, like Evil Within's was vague and hard to peice together, but thats ok, tahts what kept me replaying Evil Within till I figured it out. Now, on to gameplay. Your in a house, no idea whats going on, but couldnt help but thinking whats going on here. there are 3 specific objects which when intereacted with, commence the chapters. Nice thing is your given a warning so you don't have to (I wanted to get the lay of the land so to speak before doing any chapters. Its a game, but the game does an amazing job of scaring you, and I don't scare easily. Some folks likely won't like it, but I'm finding it interesting, though it is not for the feint of heart.

Apocryph
Apocryph

It's rough around a few edges but definitely one of the better horror games I played. Loved the atmosphere and the environments.

Game consists of 3 chapters and some in-between fillers. As far as chapters go, Dolores' was by far superior in terms of story, environmental storytelling, investigative work and characters. The scares are perfect, not too many, but also not too few, with very few chase scenes. This helps keep the tension high all time as you explore Dolores' decent into dementia while solving puzzles. I thoroughly enjoyed this chapter.

Second chapter I played was about Lucy. This chapter tones down the investigative/puzzle solving and ramps up the atmosphere and scares. It cleverly uses the mechanic of the photo camera flash to keep the tension, as player is not always aware what next flash just might capture. Not gonna lie, couple of time I nearly smp, those were some good scares.

And finally, the third chapter about Rakan. How do I put this eloquently? It was... shit. At this point game just drops all pretense and seemingly just gives up on keeping the tensions high and exploration/investigation, and turns into a linear chase scene, after chase scene. It was not enjoyable, it was not scary, it just felt tedious. I don't know why this chapter was so bad compared to others, maybe devs were forced to push the product out as soon as possible and had to cut corners, but they took the sledgehammer to this chapter. It left a bad taste in my mouth. The only redeeming quality of the chapter was the eerie atmosphere of the hospital, and that was it.

The filler content was somewhere in between. It was not about overall game, but small insights into the player character. Iirc there were 7? of these mini chapters, and some were interesting, others where sort of just meh.

And one final gripe with the game. Inventory management and object interactions were so awkward and inconsistent. One mistake that so many horror games make is the inventory management. The goal of horror game is to keep the tension high, keep the player on their toes, something might be lurking around any corner, be ready! However, this immersion is immediately broken when you start managing inventory. Inventory in horror games need to be as diegetic as naturally possible. Reduce HUD to only essentials, and if possible get rid of it completely. The best example I can give for this is Dead Space. That game has no UI elements at all. All the information is contained within narrative/environment. Isaacs health is displayed on his back, ammo count on the weapon, holomap comes from his bracelet. All these elements are natural part of the game and there's no immersion breaking when interacting with these elements.
The second complaint was object interaction and inconsistencies. So many horror games are going with this hold mouse and swing to open doors. But these are seamless interactions in games like Amnesia or Outlast. In Visage, interacting with doors was just ... off. Felt really awkward and weird. In addition with certain doors you interact this way, while with others you just click once. Why this inconsistency?

So, overall, it's a really good game, I give it 3.5 / 5. Half a point for sloppy inventory management and awkward object interaction, and a whole point for a god awful Rakan chapter.

*amazing*

Phenomenal psychological horror experience. It's basically modern Amnesia, defenseless survival horror with an amazingly immersive sanity system that shapes the world's occurrences to your character's mental state. Top notch atmosphere. The game is based primarily on environmental horror as opposed to monsters, which is refreshing. The graphics are very impressive, which is surprising coming from a small studio! Especially the lighting in outside areas - it's not RTX but could've fooled me. The way this game plays on your psyche is genius, with how everything just feels so random like a living, breathing world and it gradually ramps up in intensity the further you go to simulate losing your mind. Very, very excited to see what else this team creates. Masterpiece. It does have some performance issues like gpu usage drops and occasional crashing on load, but considering this is their FIRST game...holy shit is it amazing otherwise. The game gives you a warning about difficulty on startup but it's really not warranted honestly, game isn't that hard.

JesusTheDrunk
JesusTheDrunk

This game is fantastic, yet infuriatingly clunky with the inventory and difficulty in certain parts. Granted, I am dumb and bad at puzzle games in general. So take that how you will. It reminds me a bit of Resident Evil 7 with the environmental puzzles.
But the way the horror is executed and the story have me hooked in-spite my own personal gripes (inventory mainly being it, I get what they were going for, but come on son)

All in all, highly recommended for a disturbing psychological horror fan who doesn't mind a hefty challenge with lots of trial and error.

I give it a thumbs up because it is a unique experience. However, there is a lot to be desired as far as quality of life improvements. First, the key mapping is bad. When you first start up the game, don't change the Zoom bind off of "V" or else you break it, and make sure you have your key binds exactly the way you want them because once you start the game, trying to rebind keys later mid game because something didn't feel right (like Run/Crouch) wont work. You will have to find the Visage File in the Appdata file location, delete it, then start up again and try once more. Also, deleting that file, the only work around I found, also resets all other options settings... So, redo Graphics, Audio, such and such each time.

Making your way through the game is not very intuitive. You're not going to Sherlock Holmes your way through, you're going to Happy Accidents you're way. Just about everything can be interacted with and there is nothing to distinguish between whether those environmental items are important or not to completing a task. You will literally walk around for hours until you accidentally solve something. The Dolores chapter is THE WORST when it comes to this. There is a specific task you have to do with an item around the house and I had no clue given and would have never figured it out had I not looked up what ENVIRONMENTAL item I needed to use. Not an item you pick up and hold in storage, a one of 1,000 random interactable items in the house. It kind of feels like tasks were designed by a team so thoroughly familiar with the house and every nook and cranny details that they forgot to think, "Oh wait, only we have this level of insight of where everything is and what to do to complete these tasks... the average player wont know what we know, we should probably tone it down." lol

I know there is the revolver, but I would have never made it through the game if I had used it every time there was a dead end. I probably wouldn't have made it to the 2nd chapter.

Having said that, I know it sounds like a negative review, I still recommend playing... but it's going to be painful... but the experience, story, and just overall visuals throughout the game are really good. There's just so much they can do with QoL that would make it a superb game. It is legitimately scary and anxiety inducing. If you like Psychological horror, you wont be disappointed. You just have to grit through the painful mission mechanics.

I want to start by saying I love the concept and design of this game and I'm hoping to eventually beat it as it seems so intriguing. Unfortunately the game has so many bugs and I'm not even sure if they are currently being worked on or if it's just expected to be a broken game. I've had multiple occurrence where I had to reload because I couldn't interact with an object like a door for instance. Also, due to the lack of guidance, which I initially loved the idea of, it can almost become impossible to figure out rather than just hard because if something important glitches and disappears or can't be interacted with then you would never know if you actually need to interact with it for the level. As of this moment I'll leave it at I love it in theory but not practice and I wouldn't recommend it until it is intensely polished.

I really enjoyed this game. Probably the best horror experience in any game I have ever played.

Couple critiques:
The game feels somewhat clunky at times and it takes you out of the immersion when it happens. The immersive atmosphere is the best part about this game, so it's disappointing when you get ripped out by a glitchy mechanic. If you have played it, you know what I am talking about. Could have used a bit more polish.

The story is extremely convoluted and hard to make sense of. In a lot of games this would be a deal breaker, but the experience of this game trumps the story.

Overall, highly recommend..

Pros:
- Nice visuals and good atmosphere.
- Pretty good story.
- Decent psychological horror.

Cons:
- Buggy as hell. Multiple freezes during loading that required task manager shut off or even full PC reset to resolve.
- Silly enemy AI. Usually the ones intended to be threatening spawn 5 ft from you (no joke) and kill you instantly. It's very trial and error, which really deflates the tension.
- Silly puzzle logic. Every door in this area is jammed except for two, so wander around for 20 minutes until you find those two and then use some items from behind them. Then pass by a specific area, trigger an event and another door randomly opens and you now need to go find that one. Again, this really deflates the horror because it's pretty obnoxious.

As a big horror fan, I was expecting to like this game...But, I just found myself trying to like it for more than 3 hours.
I really got tired of it eventually. The graphics are nice and it does have a creepy atmosphere; but I was left feeling quite disappointed by some of the inventory mechanics and boring (to my personal taste) game-play style. And, the map style of the game was one of the things that quickly started to frustrate me. Cause you can call me whatever you want, but I usually don't like games where you don't even know where to go next...
I never got to finish it, and I don't think I'll ever will. The most I could do is go to YouTube and watch a full play through (if I feel interested in doing it).
I mean, I know that for certain people this game could be considered "one of the best horror games ever" or something like that. And I would totally respect that (VISAGE does have some good aspects).
But let's just say that it's not my cup of tea.

Hello,

This game has a reputation of being "The Scariest Game People Have Ever Played". This reputation is UNDESERVED. The game play is glitchy. Items being carried in your hands get caught walls and doors. The 'ghost interactions' are repetitive, turning on lights, the same radio, the TV. As an avid fan of horror games, I bought this as it was described by some as a fan made spiritual successor to P.T.

What I love about this game is it gets under your skin and fills you with apprehension, and constant unease.

While I would have loved to play this game as the atmosphere is super interesting, there is a huge annoying bug that affects my system where after dying twice the load screen will freeze, then you have to force quit out and restart the game, at which point it will freeze again when loading, so force quit out and start once more and it will play fine again. This happens after exactly two deaths every time, and requires an additional force quit to fix. Super frustrating at points in the game where you're spending more time doing the force-quit dance to make the game work than actually playing the game. I've requested a refund, I'm not spending money on this buggy game.

Broken Core

The game seemed super promising, nice graphics, dense atmosphere and extremely scary moments. Unfortunately the game is broken - l mean literally-unplayable-broken. I think I restarted the game 3 times since savegames became broken. Not the files - _the game state itself_.

Interactive objects

Throughout the game you encounter various items you can pickup and use. Nearly all of them caused a game breaking bug for me at some point. Dropped a lighter because of the insanely frustrating inventory system ? Well, bad luck, this little lighter now blocks a _door_ which is no longer openable due to "physics". So you are trapped in a room. Because a tiny lighter lays in front of the door. _Which you can't pick up anymore_ . What?

Have an essential item for the gameplay ? The game decides to freeze it midair and make it uninteractive. What a shame that you need that item to progress so there is another playthrough halted because the game is broken. Same goes for any other object, I mean just check the update log - it features the word "gamebreaking" more often than I am comfortable with.

Frustration

Save yourself the frustration. It is not worth 30 dollars. Would I buy it for a tenner ? Probably. But the regularity and the nature of the bugs hint that this game is not well designed internally. If well programmed the gamebreaking bugs should have disappeared once the first interactable went bananas. Add to that the super clunky inventory system and you have yourself setup for a big letdown if you expect this to be the amazing horror experience it could have been.

Mr. Bear

This game requires a walk through to complete... For a puzzle/horror game, alt tabbing or coming out of an atmospheric experience such as this, to figure out a puzzle without straight up brute forcing it, because simply put, most puzzles in this game have zero clues whatsoever as to what to do. The game itself is gorgeous and I absolutely love what the game is trying to accomplish, but you can see the inspirations are clearer than most of the mirrors in this game, and this game sadly has you drag yourself along slower than a slug, which almost feels intentional so that you can't beat it fast enough to refund it after realizing the spooks and jumps don't make up for actual tension and fear of the unknown. Simply put, this game in its current state just doesn't cut it, and I couldn't recommend this to any actual horror enjoyers.

An acceptable stand in for the P.T. that never was, Visage is visually on point but suffers from having a cast of characters as translucent as the ghosts themselves.

Functionally, the game is reminiscent of Amber: Journeys Beyond as it covers the stories of several past occupants of the same house where trigger items are used to play a chapter for each. Unlike Amber, however, it somehow fails to make you connect with any of them, even as you watch intimate home tapes of what are presumably their favorite family moments and wander a lived-in home full of their personal photographs. There's a lot of beautiful scenery to chew and a lot of masterful tension created as you roam this cozy spook house of your nostalgic youth, but the moment you slow down to consider the "why's" and "who's" that should make up the heart of the game, Visage will nervously try to distract you by flipping off a light switch or slamming a door. This trick mostly works while in-game thanks to the ease with which you can slip back into checking out a new area or appreciating details, but afterwards you might find yourself thinking less about the experience itself and more about how much better it could have been with a stronger storytelling vision.

Misfires such as the writing and voice acting, which at its worst sound as piecemeal and unnatural as the Resident Evil dialogue on PS1 and at its best sound like substandard line deliveries from a Star Wars prequel (largely in part to what I suspect is ESL striking again, which is sadly all too often the case in many of these indie horror games made elsewhere but set in America), or the game's failure to convey through set design/fashion choices/musical cues when exactly the previous occupants resided in the house, or a plot that never concerns itself with tying things together or creating an identifiable emotional center are hefty but don't actually ruin the fun that Visage has to offer. Indeed, the amount of love put into crafting this piece of dark art, that nobly stepped up to the plate to deliver on a teaser product that left countless hanging, is apparent in plenty of other ways: from the excellent use of lighting, music and sound effects to the scares themselves, and it makes for a great ride. Like a rollercoaster, though, it won't leave you with much to consider outside of the immediate experience.

Note: If you liked this game and don't mind old school point and click games, try Amber: Journeys Beyond

This game is fantastic if you know what you're getting into in terms of how it's designed. As a baseline, this is extremely reminiscent of Amnesia: The Dark Descent in that you're a helpless protagonist trying to discover who you are and why you're there. To help this feeling along, you have no combat ability, need to hide from some events that can randomly happen, and have many, many puzzles to solve. The puzzles are where the difficulty comes in. When the developers say the game is "hard", what they really mean is that the solution to those puzzles you need to solve to move the plot along are often extremely obscure. If you remember classic point-and-click games from the 90s (Return to Zork, Myst, Tex Murphy), then you have an idea of what to expect. For example, and without spoilers, more than one puzzle requires you to circle around something a few times to trigger the next step. As best as I could tell you, there's nothing (with one exception I can think of) that even hints at those things, so you'll either need a lot of trial and error or be OK using a guide as you go along.

While a lot of players dislike the control system, and to be sure, I'm one of them, I do like that it's not something I'm familiar with. This adds a little tension to situations where you would otherwise be on autopilot and could likely result in dying a few times as you fumble around with an item. It doesn't take long to figure it out, but there is a mild learning curve to it.

Graphically, the game is amazing and the environments are downright haunting. What really sucked me in, however, was the amazing sound design that pairs up with those environments perfectly. The music at the end of a chapter really gave me a sense of completion and made me want to dig into the next.

After a little more than 15 hours and getting all the achievements, this was easily a great pickup on sale and I hope the developers are planning on a follow up to this game.

As soon as they beat solitaire on the old dusty family desktop will they be allowed to play whatever game this is. I didn't see any of these "Im 45 daddy" reviews here so hopefully the dang kids won't see this. I hate my wife gosh darn. I need a 25' tape measure just to show her how much I hate her. Make sure you don't vote, the government is full of clowns and by next year I'll be off the grid somewhere in northern Canada. If you don't hear from me the bears were faster than me. Yall take care now, I'm gonna go find my socks.

Almost impossible to progress through the game when you have to stumble around a huge area full of items and hopefully come across the correct item. In the meanwhile as you wander around nothing happens....

I got through over 5 hours of this game and had to stop for my own health. The game is brilliant and immersive. So immersive in fact that I nearly had a heart attack playing it.
