Maybe it was the fact that people got to blow away Nazis. Maybe it was the sheer challenge of it all. For whatever reason, Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny, pioneered the first-person shooter genre and brought its legendary creators, id Software, worldwide notoriety and numerous awards.

I've played for less than an hour and I already love this game.

Edit: Maybe I should touch some grass.

Ok... i get it this is an old game with old controls and i know you can change the controls BUT if you say you want to use a mouse if you move your mouse back or forward you move... WHY. but its a good game 4 stars

Ignore the playtime, I use ECWolf (reuses ZDoom code in places, adds an automap that is invaluable in some of the more cruel maps!)

The odd episodes are fun, the even episodes really aren't (Ep4 is tolerable, 2 and 6 are CBT)

Definitely shows its age with the endless mazes and the limited enemy variety (mostly hitscanners) and weapon variety (if you play on higher difficulties you will be using the MP40 99% of the time), but it's still fun and I love the aesthetic. You can zoom through levels faster than Doom by bouncing off the walls.

Even if you're just looking at this as the inferior and forgotten predecessor to Doom, this game was quite popular in its own right for the time and its modding scene inspired Carmack to make Doom easier to mod.

A lot of the classic mods for this game unfortunately are hex-edits or similar of the original executable, and require you to use DosBOX instead of the convenience of a source port, and the mod scene is smaller to start with, though I haven't ever checked out what players are doing with ECWolf or LZWolf (ECWolf fork, made for easier modding).

A great piece of gaming history, other than E4M5 (screw that level) this is a timeless classic. Also was the first game I ever 100%'d on Xbox 360 back in the day, however those achievements are not on Steam, but it's still worth the play even if you just want to kill Hitler over and over.

Wolfenstein 3D may be outdated by today's standards but it's still a fun game to play. For players like me in their 50's, it's also a good trip down memory lane, remembering how much time I spent in my off-time in college playing this game on an old 486 machine equipped with a Soundblaster Pro.

Despite being rated as "playable" it will NOT run on Steam Deck - the launcher causes a technical glitch & prevents it from being ran.

Game itself is a classic; will change rating if either Deck compatability is added or updated to be Unplayable.

If I can get Commander Keen to run on Deck then I should be able to get Wolfenstein 3D working on deck.

This game is what started it all. I still have fond memories of coming home from junior high and designing my own maps in the mad editor on our brand new 486 SX computer...with 4 MB of RAM! And a 20 MB Hard drive! Because, why would you need any more?!?

So much nostalgia, so many pixels, so much fun.

I mean... I know it's a classic but it aged pretty bad. I know I'll get a lot of flak for saying that but this game doesn't hold up like Doom does. You can play the original Doom today and still have a lot of fun but not so much with this one, at least for me.

I don't know what I expected from such an old game but these two games have aged far worse than those first two Doom titles. On the other hand the actual emulation is quite well done for such an old game and if I had to rank these two games it would go:

2) Wolfenstein 3D
1) Spear of Destiny

A great classic.
Wolfenstein 3D is a great classic first person shooter game, it's got a great feel to it when shooting enemys, and it feels good when you kill bosses in boss battles. A great classic I would reccommend it.

The Grandfather of all FPS games.

Wolfenstein 3D is a 2.5 First Person Shooter developed by ID Software and released back in 1992. Considered to be THE grandfather of the First Person Shooter genre as a whole, it features a lot of 90 degree walls, secrets everywhere filled with treasure, and lots of shooting of enemy soldiers, lots and lots of them. Being a fairly old game, you wouldn't expect it to hold up as well as other ID Software titles like Doom or Quake but Wolf 3D does still have some staying power thanks to it's simplicity despite it's ancient technology and less that stellar level design.

Gameplay of Wolfenstein 3D is the classic Retro FPS base formula of, Shooting Enemies, Collect Keys, and Possibly finding secrets. It was one of the first games if not the first to ever present this kind of gameplay and it's kinda interesting to see how far FPS games have come from this simple loop. On the other hand, due to the technology it was made with, a lot of the levels boil down to large mazes with enemies placed in, which is not necessarily bad but it's very easy to make it a huge slog to get through. This might also be due to the low enemy variety and even lower variety of weapons which if taken in with slow bursts might not be too by but trying to marathon it might not be the best way to enjoy it. Considering there's 60 total levels included in the base game along, the original 3 episodes and the 3 prequel nocturnal mission episodes. Plus with the recent ID Software reorganization you get Spear of Destiny, the prequel sequel?, on top of it including even more levels.

Overall, while in today standards, Wolfenstein 3D hasn't aged particularly well. But if you look at it from it's simplicity and what it did to FPS games as a whole, you can see a game that is simple, fun, and has a lot of content. While you can play this game via a Sourceport, if you want a more enthralling shooter experience, while also keeping the basic level design, artstyle, and atmosphere. I couldn't recommend Brutal Wolfenstein enough. While yes it is a Doom mod, for taking what was simple and adding a bit more to it while also not undermining the source material is fantastic, although as of this review it's not fully complete. Now with the orginial game completed, maybe it's time to take a Return trip To Castle Wolfenstein, ey?

So there you have it. the very first proper first person shooter ever, finally available in the german steam shop. of course i immediately bought it on sale and played it.

Wolfenstein 3D is the most simplistic form of a first person shooter you can imagine and the archaic grafics can get a bit straining on your eyes, but it’s still fun enough that you’ll just gonna go on playing nevertheless. technically it already plays just like Doom, only with inferior visuals and a lot less refinement and variation in terms of leveldesign, weapons and enemies.

„If it is so close to Doom, why would I not want to play this?“ you may ask. Well, just to mention it, there is one major flaw: The leveldesign is a f*ckin catastrophe, especially in the later episodes known as the Nocturnal missions (which serve as a prequel to the first three main episodes). When it comes to atrocious, ultra-messed up, hyper-confusing, infuriatingly maze-like leveldesign, Wolfenstein 3D takes the cake. Most of the levels can be solved with some patience and a systematic approach to exploration, but some of them will just leave you completely lost and stumped due to their confusing architecture, absolutely huge size and extremely samey textures. I'd say at least a handful of them make it downright mandatory to look at a map on the interwebs, otherwise they'll just downright drive you completely insane. If that alone isn’t bad enough, some levels are so poorly designed that you can break the game and are unable to progress: Towards the end of episode 4 for example is a level where you have to reach the gold key by opening secret passages in a very specific way. if you do it in the wrong order, you can‘t reach the gold key anymore and are basically trapped. There is no level restart, there were no enemies left to kill me and i didn’t safe so far in that episode, so all i could do was to restart the whole episode and play all six previous levels again (which were so confusing that i could barely remember how to complete them, even though i just finished them minutes ago). Overall, this makes Wolfenstein 3D more of a maze game than an action-packed first-person-shooter and it is proof that even masters like Id Software started as inexperienced amateurs.

But apart from this one huge flaw, the rest of the game is as fun and goofy as it gets when it comes to classic oldschool fps gameplay. Just to make it clear, the Nocturnal missions as well as the official Expansion Spear of Destiny are also included in the Steam Version, which leaves you with whooping 80 levels. Bonus points for that.

For obvious reasons it's not quite Doom yet and you most likely won’t play it through more than once or twice, but during those one or two times you’ll still have a pretty good time for the most part.
If it weren’t for Wolfenstein 3D, Doom probably never would‘ve come to exist and video game history as a whole wouldn’t be the same as it is today, so it‘s still an absolute must-play for any serious fps fan. Still better than Wolfenstein 2 The new Colossus, so Wolfenstein 3D gets a well deserved MEIN LEBEN!!! out of 8.

Magpie, P.I.
Magpie, P.I.

I think this may have been my introduction to WWII. I had gotten Microforum's The Complete Encyclopedia of Games (on 2 CD-ROMs) as a gift -- still have it, wonder if it works? -- and would often try items from its advertised suite of Over 1000 Games.

As I recall, screenshots were sometimes available for each game in its browser and I was very impressed by one from a game called Spear of Destiny. It really stood out from the encyclopedia's other offerings. (And this would have been several years after the game was released too.) More recently, about the time I was finshing school, I learned from Kushner's book Masters of Doom that this was not by accident: A lot of creative and programming genius went into making this game.

But I was pretty young when I tried this for the first time, because I remember being spooked by its PC-13 rating screen. Maybe about 4th grade or so. I tended to follow rules, but I think my rationale for playing was that "All the other games are ok, so why shouldn't this one be too?" and besides I was curious. (I may have already seen PG-13 movies by then too, although with parental supervision.)

I have always liked its title-screen/theme song -- Searching I think is its name -- and the rest of the music is very good too. Especially the medley that combines When Johnny Comes Marching Home, The Marine's Hymn, etc. -- basically, what you would get if you could song-ify apple pie. Graphics are good too. There is a brown tile texture in here that strikes me as being really ahead of its time, reminding me of one from N64's The World Is Not Enough.

Gameplay may not be as complex as more recent games but it still holds its own. You're only moving in 2D, no jumping or looking up/down. You walk, run, or strafe. Seemed like you picked up items more consistently if you were facing them, than if you backed or sidestepped into them. Items play distinctive sounds when they're picked up, but there was one time I had to retrace my steps when I thought I picked up a key but actually hadn't. You start (at the beginning or after losing a life) with a knife, pistol and 8 bullets. You can equip two other guns (machine gun and chain gun I think) when you find them, and hold up to 99 ammo. All guns use the same ammo and have different rates of fire. I saw a walkthrough online where they "tapped" the chain gun releasing ~5 bullets at time. I adopted this when I realized the way I had always done it, pressing the button down, ate up your ammo really quickly.

Damage absorbed seems to be fairly random, although you do tend to get hurt worse if you're close to an enemy and you're not moving. I used a strategy that I describe as Finding Nemo, where Marlin pops in and out of the anemone to look around for danger. Especially in halls that fork I might rush in once to see if I caught an enemy's attention -- enemies have distinct shouts for when they've seen you; if that didn't happen I would strafe in look one way, strafe out, strafe in and look the other way, etc.

The AI seemed simple at first, where they would just charge straight at you if they saw you or heard you shoot. Sometimes I would smoke them out by shooting near them, but this had maybe a 50-50 chance of working. There are some levels that made me want to yell at the AI to stop slamming doors so much, but that would not have been realistic and would have blown the whole operation. (I couldn't figure out how to use the sound to locate where the enemy was.) But as I went on, they did some pretty sophisticated stuff, like leveraging the maze to flank me, going behind doors I'd need keys for, or grabbing backup first. If the highest level has more of that, it could be really tough.

There are several difficulty levels. I think I remember wimping out and using the easiest ones when I was younger. This time, I played all the way through with the default setting. There's only one other higher than default. With a cautious saving strategy, normal was just about the right level of challenging, although the difficulty seemed to ramp up quite a bit in the last levels of the final episode.

There are 6 episodes of 9 levels each, with each 9th level being a boss level. The encyclopedia only had a demo, which I think may have been only the first few levels. I think I would have played the demo all the way, but I don't remember. I don't recall facing any bosses. So it wasn't until I got it on Steam that I got to play the game in its entirety.

Levels themselves are maze-like. You wouldn't think that mazes would appeal to a navigationally-challenged person like myself. But along the way I learned some ancient programmer wisdom -- and at this point, I've forgotten which was ancient, the programmer or the wisdom... (probably both) -- that said that if you kept your right hand touching the wall to the right of you, you would eventually find an exit. Since you're hugging the wall anyways, you might as well spam the spacebar (or whatever your Use key is) to find secrets. Works most of the time, especially with tight winding corridors, but I think it's for mazes that (1) can be drawn without lifting your pencil and (2) have rooms with one entrance. There were times I'd get caught in a loop, maybe like the world's cleverest yet dullest lab rat, following this algorithm. Other times I needed to backtrack, because I finally found the key to that door I passed a while back. (It wasn't always clear which key, blue or yellow, opened which door without trying first, but that's kind of how it works in real life too... as my keychain can attest.) So I think this algorithm can make the mazes seem much larger than they actually are. It may not be a perfect system, but it was something to try when I got stuck. Levels usually took 10-15 minutes to solve, but could take longer if I got lost, hung up on trying to get a secret (on that note, some need to be opened in a specific order), etc.

Plus, it made loading from saves easier, because I always knew where I was going. On that note, you may want to rebind the quicksave/load buttons. The screens look very similar. Although there is a dialog to double check you don't overwrite saves. All the same, there were times when I F3'd (quickload) when I meant to F2. It happened so infrequently and I saved often enough that I didn't lose much progress when I did this.

The game is very solid. I only ran into a couple of bugs, glitchy walls and sprites, that were easily remedied by reloading. These may have been from how I was running the game (e.g. my DosBox settings) rather than the game itself.

Bosses can mow you down quickly until you figure out the trick to them. (Finding secrets in those levels especially helps.) For me the most difficult one was the one who kept throwing vaccines at you like there was COVID out there or something. The final boss level is very memorable. I felt very accomplished on game completion.

Wolfenstein 3D may not be as fun or famous as Doom, but I believe everyone should play it to see how far the FPS genre has come. All my gripes about Wolf 3D is that the scoreboard is a relic of the arcade era, the levels are monotonous, and finding secrets is the *worst!* Walking along countless walls holding down E while BJ making an ear-hurting noise just to find a room with health and ammo is nothing but a shot in the dark. I know it was 1992 and technology was limited, but couldn't they have made a misaligned texture to indicate a secret?

This is the granddaddy of all FPS games. It is primitive but unique and is a very enjoyable experience. Some levels are a drag to finish but the overall game is worth it. If you enjoy retro games and FPS games, then you need to pick this game up and play it.

Note that it runs on DOSBOX and DOSBOX is horrible. I recommend a source port like ECWOLF as it stays true to the original game while allowing for modern controls.

Here is a video that shows you how to install and run ECWOLF.

Introduction

Wolfenstein 3D is the first ever FPS game developed by the legendary id Software and while Quake and Doom are credited for being the video games that influenced FPS genre, none of this would have been possible without the existence of Wolfenstein 3D, Why? Because this is where it all began and you can say that Wolfenstein 3D is the great great grandfather of FPS games which laid the foundation for all the FPS games today. Doom, Quake and Half-Life are all the descendants of Wolf 3D.

With the main introduction out of the way let's talk about the plot, You are known as "William Joseph "B.J." Blazkowicz" an American born spy with Polish ancestry and you specialize in one-man missions behind enemy lines and you have been tasked to lay waste to Nazi Germany's war efforts and that's all you need to know because if I mention anything else it will spoil the game

Gameplay

The game consists of 6 Episodes and each episode consists of 8-9 maps on average and the gameplay loop is simple

    • Kill all enemies
    • Find the keys (Not all levels need keys)
    • Find the elevator and proceed to the next level
    • In case there is no elevator it means this is a boss level and you have to Kill the boss

Most of the game is fast paced but there are also rare moments when you can land a sneak attack with a knife and instantly kill low level enemies. Furthermore the enemy AI is quite decent as they often try to gang up on you and try to flank you if possible, They are also alerted by gunshots and will walk towards the last known location where the gunshot originated from, They will keep trying to hunt you down unless they kill you or get killed by you

But not everything is good about the enemy AI either, there is a pattern which once figured out makes them completely vulnerable and this stupidity of theirs can be exploited. In the last paragraph I mentioned they follow the source of the gunshot and yes while this is their plus point this is also a weakness because whenever you're standing right next to a tight corridor they will try to rush at you and all you have to do is stand back and let them come to you, and once they are in range a few shots are enough to take down a squad of enemies

Game Mechanics

Now for the game mechanics, As you all know Wolf 3D was released in the 90s and back then there was no "Free-Look" or "Z-Axis" for the view you can only change your view on the X-Axis (Horizontal View) with that out of the way lets talk about the rest of the mechanics

This is where the game lacks versatility, Because there aren't a lot of weapons to choose from and the only weapons you can carry are

    • Knife (Mostly Useless)
    • Pistol
    • SMG
    • Heavy Machine Gun

The lack of weapon variety is more frustrating given the fact that some of the boss enemies have Rockets/Missile Launchers

Apart from the weapons there are other few items to aid in your gameplay
Such as Medkits, Scattered Food items and ammo that's all

Lastly the most important detail is that Wolf 3D relies on hitscan enemies most of the time you don't have any chance to dodge enemy attacks and eventually you'll die even if you thought you're out of range

Another annoying thing I noticed is the maze-like level design for some maps I absolutely hated some of the levels and the fact that one of them required me to UNLOCK A SECRET TO FINISH IT was infuriating

Modding / Addons

I personally haven't played using any mods however I checked moddb and found out there are quite a few mods (193 as of writing this review)

https://www.moddb.com/games/wolfenstein-3d/mods

Other

Now to discuss every other thing which I couldn't mention anywhere else

    • There is no concept of Physics in this game so if you're into it then this will be a downside for you
    • The dosbox version is absolute garbage to play with and the controls are really really absurd for that I recommend you install the ECWolf sourceport
    • No ambience
    • Decent soundtracks

Problems / Issues

    • The dosbox version as I mentioned before is absolute garbage and I couldn't even stare at the screen for 2 minutes because of how bad it was to deal with that issue I installed ECWolf sourceport please consider it before playing
    • A few glitches where I got stuck on a level and had to replay all the maps from that episode just to get back to the point where I got stuck (Can be avoided if you keep more than 2 copies of saved games)

Final Verdict

Wolf 3D has its flaws but regardless of its issues its definitely a game worthy of being in a steam library however I recommend you purchase it only during a sale

Overall Rating: 7/10

Often considered to be the first real first-person shooter (albeit with primitive forms of the genre being around since 1973), Wolfenstein 3D puts the player in the shoes of William Joseph "B.J." Blazkowicz. World War II is raging, and the Allied Powers had him doing reconnaissance work in order to find out about something the Nazis are planning called "Operation Eisenfaust." However, B.J. gets captured, and is imprisoned in Castle Wolfenstein, from which he fights his way out of the prison after tricking a guard to come into his cell in Episode 1. Eventually fighting Hans Grosse to get out of the prison, B.J. and the Allies find out what Operation Eisenfaust is: an army of undead mutant super soldiers created by the vile Dr. Schabbs, with B.J. being tasked to thwart the plan, setting up the events of Episode 2. Succeeding there, ol' Adolf Hitler, being aware that he is losing the war, retreats to the Fuhrerbunker underneath the Reichstag, setting up Episode 3. The Allies send B.J. to fight his way through the building, with B.J. engaging Hitler, who's wielding a mech suit and chain guns, in a climactic showdown that has B.J. actually succeed in killing Hitler, and thus single-handedly win World War II! The final three episodes, the Nocturnal Missions, are prequels, with B.J. being sent to stop General Fettgeischt from engaging in "Giftkrieg" with chemical weapons created by the Nazi scientist Otto Giftmacher.

Calling this a boomer shooter is kind of quaint in a way. As Civvie 11 put it, this game is essentially your granddad (or great granddad) who's always talking about how he shot all those German soldiers in World War II, technically making it a greatest generation shooter! Jokes aside, it is fairly primitive due to be a precursor of the modern FPS that we know today. Combat is pretty much entirely hitscan, the levels are very maze-like, textures are fairly samey, and you have just one knife and three guns: a pistol, machine gun, and chaingun, all of which share the same ammo, which caps off at 99. There are also scores and extra lives, and the game can get fairly monotonous, with combat also being somewhat frustrating, due to the pseudo-stealth elements in-game.

All that said however, this game can still be rather fun! Being that it is pretty much the granddaddy of FPS games as we know them today, it makes sense that it would be rather primitive by today's standards. Its still rather satisfying to mow down Nazis with your arsenal of weapons. The enemies, ranging from Wehrmacht mooks, SS troopers, Officers, Nazi dogs, and Dr. Schabbs' mutants, are given distinct designs and audio cues, making them easy to distinguish from each other. Even though I previously said it can be frustrating to fight them, combat can also be rather fun, either going mowing down Nazis in quick succession, or playing a game of cat and mouse to conserve ammo and health. This is also true of the boss fights, which can be either frustrating or easy, but all of them satisfying to take down, because f*ck Nazis. When you do figure out where to go, or when you find a secret, it feels really good! Movement is a bit wonky, but once you figure it out, its awesome! Graphically, this is very impressive for its time! Not to mention, the soundtrack is pretty good. id Software would later improve and refine this game's formula with Doom in 1993, and the rest, they say, is history.

Even if the primitiveness is a bit off-putting, I still say its a game worth checking out if you're an FPS fan and want to see where the genre really got its start!

I will say that although there is some fun to be had with this game and SoD, I really can't recommend them unless you are curious about the really early days of FPS. These games have aged pretty badly in my opinion.

My biggest complaint is how the enemies work overall, you cannot shoot through them but they can shoot through you, meaning that you'll often need to play very conservatively and lure enemies out of rooms one by one when facing more than one. Additionally, there are many times where you just aren't given time to react to enemies when opening doors and turning corners, leading to taking damage and deaths that are utterly cheap and out of your control. This is an issue that is exacerbated by enemies being able to take over 50% of your HP in a single shot. It's a very sour feeling when you are creeping through a level, low on HP and ammo, and what would otherwise be a tense, fun, and enjoyable moment is turned into an irritating death at the hands of an enemy that gives you seemingly no window to react. This issue is especially bad with the undead enemies, who seemingly have no startup animation when spotting you and start dealing damage as soon as they enter your line of sight. It's annoying and completely unfair.

The level design is another huge issue, there are so many floors that can only be described as literal mazes, oftentimes filled to the brim with enemies. The final episode of Wolf3D contains some absolutely terrible levels, and floors 15 and beyond of SoD are some of the absolute worst levels I've experienced in a video game. I can only describe them as utter b******t. Just utterly unfair, unenjoyable messes of level design that are extremely tedious and completely irritating.

This game has some fun levels and moments that are overshadowed by infinitely more annoying and tedious moments. I don't regret playing these games, in fact I think that personally experiencing this early form of FPS was very interesting for me. But unless you have the same desire to see the origins of your favourite genres and see how far games have come, and even which elements remain in place to this day, I can't recommend this game, as there are simply too many annoyances for it to be enjoyed purely for the gameplay.

Wolfenstein 3D's incredible influence and contribution to gaming history has overshadowed review coverage in recent decades. Most reviewers and journalists wax lyrical about the innovation Wolf 3D brought to the industry, being largely considered as the first FPS game ever made. In this regard, I have the highest respect towards this title as it's the root of my favourite gaming genre. Without Wolf 3D, I probably wouldn't be into video games as it created the first-person-shooter genre. However, I can't recommend to anyone other than hardcore genre fans or gaming historians.

Wolfenstein 3D's Steam release is barebones to say the least. Unlike DOOM (1993), which has received fantastic compatibility support, native mod-launchers, extra content and essentially everything you can ask for from a classic title, Wolf 3D brings very little to the table in 2022. The game defaults to prehistoric resolutions, offers very little customisation tweaks, nor even control presets. This is all the more frustrating since the Xbox 360 Arcade marketplace received a much better port which has almost all of these. Some of these issues can be negated by using the ECWolf source port, but 30 years on from release you'd really expect an official update.

Level's lack virtually any kind of story or design. I'd go so far as to say most levels feel randomly generated; simply a maze of corridors, keycards and enemy placement. Rarely does the game combine elements to offer a degree of story or setup. Objects are sprinkled seemingly at random across the maps, and the closest thing I've seen to an identifiable "room" is a series of dogs behind some doors which implied you're in a dog kennel. I totally respect this is an old game, and iD were working with very little textures, but some set pieces could still have been created. What's stopping the creation of, say, a larger room featuring a few rows of Nazis in front of a commander? Minor setups to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Secrets aren't hinted towards at all. To find these, you have to hump walls while pressing the use key which gives the most basic sound effect which sounds more akin to computer feedback from the 1960s. Every so often, as you mash enter on every single wall, one will move aside and you'll be granted some ammo or bonus points. There's no satisfaction to this however, because there's no puzzle solving or attention to detail required. It's purely a test of patience and luck, and so they don't feel worth finding.

Gunplay is essentially all RNG. When enemies shoot at you, a code determines whether they hit you based on the gun they're using and distance to you. This means, later in the game, enemies will insta-kill you the second you peer from a wall later in the game. I love hard games, but I feel I have very little input into my survival as it's pure RNG and luck. Even boss battles are dull, as you're left to simply expend a few hundred bullets of the chain gun into them until they die. The game shows that you can at least interact with switches, so why not create a puzzle based around these as part of boss battles?

I appreciate this is an older game, and lots of concepts I'm referring to are from a modern perspective. I've only ever lived with certain gaming mechanics which I now take for granted, and which required Wolf 3D to pave the way to create. However, it doesn't really excuse the lack of even just a modern update to the original, regardless of the dated gameplay. For that, I can't really recommend this game, but I do respect its contribution to gaming.

Retro Review

For some people this was the first shooter ever. I only ever heard of it as being so infamous. I’m from a country the game is banned (still to this day) so I have no nostalgia for it and only recently got it because I bought the Wolfenstein pack, as I heard a lot of good things from return to castle Wolfenstein. I thought I could play it for completionism’s sake.

Gameplay
First of all the game starts with solely a dosbox launcher, although you don’t have to do anything yourself except increase CPU cycles and so on. The thing is this a rather outdated way to do it.
I mean you can play the game even in your browser, or download ECWolf, which is basically the Wolfenstein source port equivalent to gzdoom. It’s a nice way to get the game in a legit way and then continue using that port version as it also requires it to play.

Now I’m not such a fan of the gameplay. I mean yeah its old, but I feel like unlike Doom it doesn’t offer a good enough gameplay foundation to still play it for fun in this time. You only have like 4-5 enemy types and all usually work the same, they see you , shout their line and then attack. This is a good baseline so you know what kind of enemy you are up to but the tactic is usually the same due to their attack pattern and weapons in the game.

In total there are only 3 weapons, pistol, MP40 and a MG. Most of the time you use the mp and mg, switch around them to save ammo but due to the instant fire there is no real disadvantage to taking anything except the MG. Problem is the combat itself aswell, as enemies have a death animation and their body itself. This will block bullets but not enemy bullets, meaning they can line up and fire multiple shots at you, trough their own friends while you get damage.

There are bosses but they don’t require any strategies different than regular enemies except maybe the one that shoots rockets at you.

There is a life system which feels useless as you can save anytime.
Luckily the source port features the snes exclusive minimap, although I played the game via a doom 2 conversion mod which gave me the really good Doom automap. Otherwise I would have been lost a lot due to the games design and aesthetics structure being very maze esque.

What i really like tough is that the game features secrets, altough they can only be found by activating a wall which reveals one of them. The problem is that there is absolutely no indication on how to find one, altough when you do find one its quite the surprise.

This way the game will stretch on to 6 Episodes, there are almost no changes except the rare maps where you encounter mutants or some texture change. This will take you probably around 6-8 hours,

Story
Strangely enough this one has some of the story in the game via textboxes you see after beating a boss, which is rare for this type and age of game. The 3 later episodes even serve as prequels to the main game.

Aesthetics
The engine apparently cannot display floor and ceiling textures, only walls left and right. Which do make maps very labyrinthian. I strangely never got as lost as an example in doom due to the game never having any switch puzzles or the like. Altough it would be way much harder if i didnt play with some kind of automap . Also no verticality due to the mentioned technical limitation. Although it’s a very early game to feature voice acting, im really impressed. Also especially the original OST which even has a reimagination of a real life third reich song.

Conclusion/TL;DR
Although I feel bad for bashing such an old game but the question is why should I buy this version now? And personally I couldn’t really find any justifiable reason to do so If it would have been a proper port, like the stuff Night Dive Studios usually does, i would have said its worth looking into albeit more out of curiousity sake.

"Hovertank 3-D and Catacomb 3-D in 1991 were Carmack’s first forays into texture mapping and perfecting his trademark fast engines as well as the first time id focused on a recognizable avatar shown on screen and reflex-intensive combat. Wolfenstein was an upgrade to all these tenets in every way; it was Carmack’s best engine, and was the first corridor shooter that ran at such speed. On the other side of the industry Blue Sky Productions was crafting a deep and reactive world in Ultima Underworld: the Stygian Abyss, but id’s Wolfenstein brought a rock-star swagger to shooters that made it instantly compelling. It’s pretty hard not to get hyped up by a violent, bloody Nazi murder simulator where you get fight Hitler in power armor, you know what I mean? Wolfenstein can drone on a bit with samey levels and enemies but the gun feedback, the adrenaline rush of enemy callouts, the soundtrack, there’s something compelling about all of it together that says “go on, just play a little longer.” By refining the hook and gameplay into the most concisely fun forms they could, id made the game effortless to play and difficult to put down."

Some say it's outdated and repetitive, but I enjoy its simplicity. It really mostly is just running and gunning, and for the better. In short bursts one can curb the potential repetition they might feel playing through this game, advisable to just go episode by episode. Also if you can, I recommend using ECWolf. Its touchups greatly enhance this experience.

The game in itself is amazing considering it was the first FPS (debatable of course) and a template for FPS games to follow. This particular steam release is awful, I don't understand why they couldn't give it the same treatment they gave DOOM with modern consoles, DOOM plays incredible on Xbone and Switch but unfortunately there's no port of this game there, so it's hard to accept Wolfenstein 3D didn't get the same treatment.

With the ecWOlf this game runs and looks great, however setting up the controls to play with an XBOX joystick for me was quite the ordeal as one of the axis was binding creating all kinds of havoc. Once I got through setting up everything to my liking (I play it like DOOM on modern consoles) the rest is just sheer joy.

To those that have given up due to the horrible way this was "ported" to steam I say to you, don't give up, get the ecWOlf mod and enjoy this amazing game in all its glory once more! Below is the video tutorial in how to do add the files, setting up is gonna take some trial and error depending on your preferences but well worth it.

PS: I just want to add that if you have Spear of Destiny as well, use the same ecWOlf tool, settings will carry from W3D so there's no need to tweak each game individually. I just started SoD briefly to confirm and it worked right off the bat!~

This is it. The beginning. The first bullet in first-person shooter history was fired when B.J. Blazkowicz began his escape from Castle Wolfenstein. Every single shooter can trace it's lineage back to this ancestor. And to this day, the Nazi-slaying mayhem of Wolfenstein 3D is just as enjoyable and I think the youngsters can learn a thing or two from their founding father.

What can I say, this game is still a blast. It has the genetics of what eventually became Doom, all the charm of oldschool 90s video games and it isn't shy to display it's Nazi imagery and gore to really immerse you in its dark world. While Machine Games B.J. is still a fun guy, he's way too busy being a family man, while Wolf3D B.J. straight up walked into Hitler's home and shredded his mechanical ass to pieces personally. What a legend.

In short, buy this game and play it! While the abundance of mazes can be frustrating, challenge yourself and beat this game! Every gamer needs to experience this! Just do yourself a favour and install the ECWolf mod so you can play with proper controls and at full resolution. Get Psyched!

Genuinely debating whether I prefer Wolfenstein 3D or DOOM. Both are indisputable classics that pioneered First-Person Shooters and their influence today is still seen and unmatched. While I love DOOM for it's much faster-paced gameplay and constant adrenaline, I think I prefer Wolfenstein's gameplay as it also mixes fast-paced action with stealth. The enemies in this game do so much more damage to you in this game so in that respect, it constantly feels like more is on the line. It can get pretty redundant here and there with constantly searching for items in the confusing mazes, but at the same time, you don't want to put the game down until you find what it is you're looking for. And because of that, the satisfaction actually feels earned once you find it. There's nothing more satisfying than finding a room full of Nazi treasures and then pocketing them all while hearing that beautiful sound of your score going up and up and up. DOOM is already one of my favourite games ever, and I'm going to have to give that title to Wolfenstein too. Absolute masterpiece that still holds up thirty years later.

Still holds up even to this day. It comes with 6 episodes though it's best to playthrough Episode 1 - 3 because that's the full experience of how it was originally made while Ep 4 - 6 were just prequal/extra levels they added in which are very hit and miss with way too many maze styled level design ramped up even more than the original. If you're going to do just Episode 1,2 and 3 then the game is as simple as it can be, the simplicity helps it alot as sometimes that's all you want from a game and you'll get it right here.

Castle Bravo

As a piece of gaming history that laid the groundwork for what would become the "First Person Shooter" genre, and for the passion and genius of the developers, I give this game a thumbs up. It's Wolfenstein 3D. We all know it. It's legendary - just behind Doom and Quake.
However... Being the first real attempt at a full '3D action game' (with the exception of Hovertank 3D and Catacombs 3D), it's not the best usage of the game engine. Very limited weapon and enemy variety. Level design gets pretty stale, boring, and downright monotonous after only a few maps. When I played through Wolfenstein 3D in its entirety, I did so purely to appreciate a part of gaming history and experience the origins of the FPS genre (my favorite genre). But playing through Wolfenstein 3D felt like a serious chore, honestly. For its time, it was groundbreaking and blew people's minds. It was engaging and exciting in a world where Doom and Quake and Duke Nukem 3D didn't yet exist. And in a world where Blake Stone and Rise of the Triad (two other Wolf3D engine games) didn't yet exist....
To our modern gaming perspectives, Wolfenstein 3D will feel very mediocre and bland as a game. It feels like a chore, as I said. With my playthrough, I typically could only play a map or two at a time before feeling bored, saving my progress, and turning the game off. There were definitely some moments here and there where I was genuinely engaged and having legitimate fun. But these moments weren't very often and they didn't last more than a few minutes at a time.
I don't want to say Wolfenstein 3D is a 'bad' game. It's a work of genius - from a programming to an artistry standpoint. The men who made it are legends and geniuses. The 'giants' whose shoulders all future FPS game devs stood upon. But it's a game of its time and it has not aged well. Definitely buy it and play it if you want to have a look into the origins of FPS history. Do it for the sake of game history appreciation. Don't exactly expect to have a blast though.
PS: Use the ECWolf sourceport. It's a much smoother experience with proper mouse and WASD keyboard controls, proper strafing controls, support for modern resolutions, etc.

While a really old game, it's one best classics there is. Nothing kills time and/or stress like mindless shooters. Just remember this isn't Doom, rushing in guns blazing will get you killed more often than not. BJ is very much a glass cannon. The complaints of repetitive level design are valid, but this can be mitigated by playing is short bursts, only playing a few levels before taking a break. For maximum enjoyment the standard DOSBox port should be replaced with either ECWolf or LZWolf, there is a guide on how to do this.

This game was one of the first modern shooters to come to PC. For being a small MS-DOS game from id software, the graphics were great for it's time and depending on whether you were using the old stock PC speakers, Disney Sound Source, or Creative Labs Sound Blaster, the sounds and music for the game were greatly updated and added greatly to mood and environment of the game.

A timeless classic overall. Controls are fine, and simple CTRL = Fire, Space = Interact with Doors/secret walls. Arrow keys you move, magical. You walk over objects to pick them up. You exit a stage by picking a key, then finding a exit, which yes it can be daunting to those who can not solve mazes, but easy. If you're into old-school retro gaming and nostalgia, then Wolfenstein 3D is a must-play - it is the grand-daddy of first-person shooters, after all. But if you're unfamiliar with it, be aware: this is something of a maze game. There are 6 chapters, each consisting of several levels, and as you progress the levels will get more and more labyrinthine. On top of that, the gameplay is basic - run and gun, pick up keys to open doors, get to the end of each stage. What I'm saying is, it gets repetitive - which won't be to everyone's taste. Admittedly, this is one of those games that I do like to play, but can only really do so occasionally and in short bursts due to that repetitiveness.

Nonetheless, if you can stomach that, then it's worth trying out - at the very least just so you can pump Mecha-Hitler full of Chaingun bullets!

Note I'm using the ECWolf source port.

TL:DR Wolfenstein 3D is still a fun FPS for any fan of the genre despite its age and the limitations of the engine.

Instead of of going into Wolf3D's history I'll simply start off with "has it aged well?" The answer is no, Wolf3D has not aged as gracefully as say Doom has. Level design is very simple, consisting of square blocks, floors and ceilings are a solid color and not textured, and there is only one Z level. Weapons are also limited at only 4 and there are also only 5 base enemies.

Now with that chunk of excoriation out of the way is Wolf3D still fun? Absolutely yes. It's still a very competent FPS despite the above mentioned limitations. The guns are satisfying to use, enemies are fun to fight (except the cheesy instant reaction time Mutants), and the level design is generally good with only a few hinky levels out of the total 60.

Historically, Wolfenstein 3D is a pretty significant game. It was originally released in 1992 for MS-DOS. It's one of the earliest 3D games and is considered the grandfather of first-person shooter games, even pre-dating DOOM. And at the time of it's release it was a critical success, selling over a quarter of a million copies by 1995, which is pretty impressive for a pre-internet game - I got my original copies on floppy disks in the mail, and it was a strictly mouse & keyboard game - no controller support.

The gameplay is rudimentary, and gives the illusion of a 3d game (the enemies are 2D, but it works).

The plot is simple: as BJ Blazkowicz, American hero, your job is to infiltrate Nazi bunkers. There are 6 episodes, each following the same basic gameplay: Every level is a flat plain, ends with an elevator that takes you to the next level, and the final level features a boss fight.

You fight guards, soldiers and dogs, while collecting guns, ammo, and health power ups. You start with 4 lives, represented by a percentage bar of health, and when you lose a life, you start the level over. You can find extra life tokens throughout the levels, often in hidden rooms.

You can earn extra points by finishing a levels under certain amounts of time, killing all the enemies in the level, and for finding all the secret areas.

Should you own this game? Despite the basic gameplay, it is fun. For a game that is going on 30 years old, it still stands up.

Interesting historical footnote: the first game named Castle Wolfenstein came out in 1981, and had a sequel called Beyond Castle Wolfenstein in 1984. Originally released for the Apple II, the were ported to Atari 8-bit computers, Commodore 64, and eventually to MS-DOS. Both titles were very popular.

I underestimated this game. At first, I thought it would be a crappy version of doom but it is much better than other games that I own. I would definitely recommend this for your TI-84.

The Grandfather, the classic and the humble reminder of where it all began.
30 years old and still fun to play, from shooting Nazis to finding secret gold scattered about.
A bit of control customising is needed at start, but once that is done, you are on your way to becoming one of the greatest heroes!

For nearly two decades i've mowed down nazis with minigun in this game. It does not get old.
There's healthy food, stealth mechanics, rebindable keys and stereo sound.

Runs slow but it's not that much of a problem once you get use to it, 10/10 would recommend.

First of all, ignore my non-existent playtime, I used a source port that built off the resources in my steam folder, if you're interested you can find it here: https://maniacsvault.net/ecwolf/#:~:text=ECWolf%20is%20an%20advanced%20….

If you are an OG who has already played Wolf3D, you know exactly what it is and if you want to play it again.

If you are a newcomer, here's what you should know:

- The game is still fun today, it's aged well

- If you want modern controls (IE WASD movement) then use the source port I linked. You still need to have the game to use it.

- Levels are labyrinthine and very similar to eachother, you will get lost at points and the levels don't feel overly distinct from eachother, even though each episode introduces more wall textures.

- When you die, you restart the level with only your pistol, if you don't want to lose your other guns, make manual saves every level.

Play this game if you want to play the grandaddy of boomer shooters. (If you want to play the great-granddaddy. play Catacomb 3-D)

wolfenstein is, along with doom, quake, and half-life, the greatest first person shooter series ever. so much can be said about this game and its amazing level design from the ingenious minds of john romero and tom hall, addicting gameplay and programming that blew other games out of the water from the insane john carmack, fantastic soundtrack courtesy of bobby prince, and classic old school imagery and sprites from the pen of adrian carmack. 30 classic maps with 30 more in the nocturnal missions, adding up to 60 consistent, fun, and never tiring floors of america's best pastime: killing fascists. id's first masterpiece, but certainly not their last. 10/10.

Clasic, but its sad how they didnt eaven touch it after all these years unlike "clasic doom seres" that were updated and adapted to modern computers. Its unplayble and not worth it at all. Sad that its selling for 5dollars. But wheres money theres Gaben.

Classic FPS with flaws.

The main gameplay is good, but the enemies deal a ton of damage even on the lower difficulties, and the level designs are as cryptic and mazelike as it gets.

Shooty fun tho, 15/20

ThinWildMercury
ThinWildMercury

It's filled with simplistic gameplay, and mazelike designs where everything looks the same, but there is a certain charm and fun to be had with a game that is so stripped down and reduced to the fundamental basics of what an fps is. The controllers are a bit janky, but one gets acclimatised to them fairly quickly and develops a sort of rhythm which they employ when playing, to effectively utilise these submarine-like controls. The maps themselves, all look the same and are completely ridiculous with maze designs, but they form a sort of coherent logic to them which makes navigation easy and manageable.

The game is very short, to its benefit, with a longer time likely wearing the appeal quite thin.

Okay, Wolfesntein 3d is a great game, but you are literally paying for something that you can google and even play on the browser. Do not buy it at 5$, because what you literally get is a full game ran on DOS Box, which is free DOS emulator. You can EASILY just google "DOSbox" and "Wolfenstein 3d" and save these few bucks.
