All the controverse about this game made me write this review, and honestly, it is difficult to rate this game. There's a lot good about it, but I do get the point of the negative reviews. Here comes my opinion.

Short verdict: I play this game mostly in VR mode and I really like the immersion you get. The Oculus touch controls work really well and after I switched to them from a controller, I don't get VR sickness anymore. I like to relax underwater doing some (actually really stupid) tasks, that give me at least some reason to play this game aside from any sandbox play.
I know, content is not huge, I know there are some technical issues and some game design aspects are just not up to date to current games, but I have fun with this game, though, and really enjoy the experience of the diving itself. Sadly, this game could be so much more, but thats the way it is.

The long version:
Currently, there are just few diving games out there, I think the only ones worth mentioning are this game, Subnautica and Endless Ocean 2 (only available on Wii). The latter one is a really great game and I played for over 70 hours and it is also either loved or hated but nearly nothing in between. If steam offered Endless Ocean 2 with good graphics, I would not need any other diving games, frankly said.

So what do I expect from a diving game? First and most important, some underwater immersion created by authentic visuals and the simple sound of muffled breathing. The fascination of some colorful flora and fauna in diverse environments, which I can experience. The mix of solitude as a mere spectator but also a living environment.
This is essentially what I like about WOD: The graphics are likable, there are different beings and some different environments (I hope it gets polar map, too, sometime in the future) AND especially in VR you get a good feeling of underwater immersion. IMO, it's relaxing to dive at the different locations and I enjoy exploring them and watching some fishes.
In the end, I want to relax, but that must not mean that I get bored! This leads to...
Second: I expect some tasks. In this games, the tasks are ... well ... okay. Take some fotos of this, collect that... just simple reasons to get underwater. It's shallow, but its ok. I get more from this than I get from Subnautica. In Subnautica, you have to explore and survive, simple sandbox concept. Even though I love Subnauticas colorful look, thats nothing that keeps me playing. I prefer concrete tasks, even if they are quite stupid. I would've prefered a real storyline like in Endless Ocean 2, but this game is far from that.
I like it that there is no fighting and shooting in this game, that definitely helps with point 1 I mentioned above.
Third and last, the game should have a smooth gameplay and shouldnt have a lot of bugs. Sadly, the game has some issues. Sometimes fishes glitch, sometimes the game begins to stutter, sometimes you bug though walls, fishes act as if you weren't there... Then there is no voice acting, the way you have to accept tasks again at some random point after you got them from Mr. Jamaika-Man is really confusing... The list goes on. It is nothing that completely destroy the game, but I think this is where all the bad reviews largely come from.
Additionally, it is not clear in which way this game is still in development, leaving EA... there were, lets say "regular" updates, but seldom something big. I dont think there will be a lot of content added in the future.

It is a really flawed and lacking game with some good essence after all: The feeling of being underwater at nice locations that you can experience with good VR controls.

This game is no longer under development and is a heap of crud in it's current form (was more fun and open ended in earlier updates). Abandoned Early Access games should be pulled from Steam.

The Honeybadger
The Honeybadger

Horrible company, horrible policies. They treated this game like a mobile phone game. Barely updated it, while still taking money from holks, and in general, had horribly sloppy practices.

Will never, ever, ever buy something else from this company.

When I first bought the game, it seemed full of promise, and I would have encouraged you to buy it.

Lately, however, it seems that it doesn't work as well as it did when I bought it: the "improvements" for VR have actually made it harder to use (especially when I try to play without my HMD).

Short version, this game doesn't appear to be in active development. It's worth maybe $5-10 as casual SCUBA simulator, but I would not buy it again at its current price.

Blanchflower

At the time of this review, this game has been on early access for 3 years. So it is safe to assume that this qualifies as an "abandonware" software. The developers have failed to add some features that they have promised.

Having said that, the gameplay is pretty fun. It is impossible to die in this game. If you run out of oxygen when you are underwater, you simply return back to your base. The graphics is good and mesmerizing as well.

So should I recommend this game? If you don't mind buying an unfinished product, then this game is a must. However, if you don't wish to support the developers due to their lack of responsibility, then you should give this game a miss. Personally, I had no regrets buying this unfinished product.

This has A LOT of potential. I hope to see it continue to grow. If you want a full game experience, I suggest waiting for it to get closer to completion, but if all you're looking for is some beautiful graphics and a good underwater "feel", it's worth checking out. Still got some bugs and the dangerous animals aren't dangerous yet.

Abandoned? But good... just needs to be cheaper.

I really like this game, although dislike the lead in tasks with the annoying expressionless tiki bar dude.

Its a shame its clearly dead and abandoned as it could have been good. Although I've never gone diving I do love the genre of games on this subject.

Good points it works well, nice framerate and feels like you're underwater (to someone that has not done much underwater stuff lol) there are a few misson tasks to do, but get a bit repetitive. But for just swimming around its fun even if my oxygen seems to run out too quick and leaves you stood mysteriously back near the scary tiki guy.. not on the nice boat like it used to.

Bad points,,, its dead Jim... and its £14.99 and its dead... needs cool remote floaty camera to do good screen shots that I could use as wallpaper.

I'll recommend it but not at this price, only if you buy it on big discount sale if it ever goes on sale...I bought it in early days so didn't know better, but is fun for some relaxing diving.

DO NOT BUY!

The concept is cool, and I like it ...
But it is an totally broken alpha version ... (which would be fine as EA but)

It has been abandoned. Since several month there is nothing to be seen from the developer

If you buy it, you only will get a broken game. And no gurantee how long the severs will still be u

I REPEAT: DO NOT BUY!

I only bought this game yesterday but I have now played the game for several hours across several maps and I have tried to do a variety of in game missions along with some limited co-op play to try and get a feel for the game.

From what I have seen, this game is still work in progress, there seems to be multiple areas in game where are not fully implemented yet but what is currently available is playable and seems to work fine.

I like the fact that you can customise your character, their look and equipment though more options would would be appreciated. There are various sections of the customisation options that seem to be locked so at the time of writing this, I'm not sure if they will simply unlock with progress or whether they are not yet available in game until a future update. I also like exploring the maps, underwater things look good, trash items and treasure that you collect are somewhat repetative but it's a nice idea. I like the missions where you have to take photos or find certain items, that is cool but more variety is needed to keep the game fresh.

The main thing I didn't like is that there is no 3rd person camera, as much as I like like looking down at my characters breasts and legs, it would be nice to be able to see the entire character, if only to make cool screenshots.

Overall I think this is a good game and I hope the devs are able to put some finishing touches to the game to make it feel more complete but at the moment for the current price, it's not a bad purchase and if you see it on sale, it's certainly worth a look at, if you like this kind of game.

Regular game love it a great exploration and atmosphere game. VR needs some work though I get motion sickness from it a lot and I don't like that you can't see your body in VR only in game. I think this contributes to the motion sickness. Developer please work on making your VR experience more enjoyable and also keep adding content to make the game seem more full. One example chang up what the play finds instead of always trash and pirate treasure have different artifacts for different places like the WWII sub could be WWII artifacts to find to start.

Had great potential, and was a fun casual play kind of game. I enjoyed the little time I got to play it...with that being said...it is as others have stated since been abandoned. The last Update was in Feb 2017, and if you go to their actual forums on their webpage you will see the dead community. Threads most recently added to were 3 months ago...which a guy said "Hey". The game is abandoned, good game Devs. Sad we can not get a refund after a time limit...you should not have to pay for abandoned game.

This game has many problems, ugly and non-intuitive interface with serious problems of obscure buttons to change the menus. music and sound effects of a game with very low quality.

The demo videos are way better than the game itself.

Apparently Steam is going through the same phase that almost made Atari bankrupt: They are accepting any game without worrying much about quality, which causes end users to lose confidence in buying games.

When this game first game out, it was a fun an interesting idea. But now almost 2 years after the latest update or even message from the developers I think it's safe to say this game has been abandoned.

DreadPirateStuart

Yep, seems dead.

Not at all realistic. Also diving mechanics and physics aren't. You can bounce up and down like a cork - no diving profile neccesary, no decompression, no surface time, you won't use more air in greater depth, don't get the bends for fast ascend or a nitrogen narcosis ...
There is no dive planning, no setting up gear, no gear selection for specific tasks, gasmixtures, suction pumps or air sacks for object recovery ...
No murray eels, no sting rays, no poisonous stuff, no christmass-tree-worms, no slugs, no currents, no risk, no dangers, no weather. I didn't see any sharks on the reef in the first few mission areas. In fact the reefs feel a bit void of life, somewhat empty.
Your explorative roaming is limited by invisible boundries that tell you that you are leaving the area.
There is no map, no quest target (only a bearing on your underwater vehicles compass).
Fishes rubber band if you approach too quick with very unrealistic movements etc.

All in all, I can't recommend this game, not even for the 90% discount I got it for.

It has the potential to be a nice exploration game, if diving would be more challenging and realistic and if it would get developed further.
There are not many diving related games out there. As of today, if you like underwater scenery and exploration I'd recommend "Subnautica": much more fun and closer to the real thing than this, despite the Sci-Fi background. And the survival elements and building add to it. Great storyline too.

Well there is only one thing left to do:

-> Minion rating = poopa!

Abandoned piece of Early Access Game!

It was fun when the developers were developing the game. Putting in new locations, new customization options. But now I can't even get into the first dive of the game. Endless loading time.

It's sad as the game had potential to be a great singleplayer/ multiplayer diver experience with player edited missions. Now it just isn't worth anything but to take up space. Though strangely getting those trading cards still works. But it's still not worth it.

DISAPPOINTMENT! Will nothing scratch my Everblue 2 itch? And no, I've tried Subnautica too. The itch still remains!

As much as i love the trailers for this game and i love any game that is underwater. I unfortunately can not recommend this game. It is broken and abandoned in early access. I bought it 24 hrs ago and just could not get this game to run in Normal non VR mode, the game starts in VR mode by default which made it unplayable for me as i have no VR equipment. I was given a lot of friendly advice on how to get around the issue of the game starting in VR mode by default therefore leaving me with either a pink or black screen with audio but no visuals. But alas no luck so i am unable to play it.

Such a shame as this really looked promising.

Hella nauseating. Couldn't get far enough to see if I actually like the game.

If you can get past the nausea, the controls are a bit wonky. I use the left stick to move as far towards the counter as the game would let me, but it wouldn't highlight Ray for me to interact with him unless I physically leaned forward to get my head a lot closer to him. Same deal with picking up the cans in the first quest: swim all the way up to them with the thumbstick, then push my head up to it so it'd highlight and I could pick it up.

I liked the idea behind this game when I purchased it back in 2014 and thought it had a lot of potential. The environments were nice and actually gave you a sense of the scale of being underwater, and it was an overall relaxing experience.

I was really hoping that this game would become something great once it was polished. Unfortunately, it looks as if it's been abandoned. The last update was back in February, 2017. Visiting the game's official website doesn't provide any new information, either.

As it is now, I can't recommend this for new players. While the game works and is playable in its current iteration, it's definitely not finalized, and it doesn't look like it'll be getting any more updates. If you really do want to play this, then wait for a deep, deep discount before purchasing it.

Take pictures of sea life, clean up trash in the ocean, collect historical treasures and encounter no sharks. Least I don't think there are sharks.ive only played the first level and I still haven't finished it. Fun co-op although quest objectives aren't shared but individual but that makes the game longer right? Always wanted to scuba dive and this game simulates that.

On time with the Halloween-Sale I got another email from Steam, that a title on my wishlist is on sale ... again: World of Diving. I get this message every sale, for years now. But this game isn´t on my wishlist anymore and it clearly shouldn´t be on YOURS.
I bought it a loooong time ago (back in the old days of war) on Early Access, played through all its content in 32.8 hours and finished it with 100% achievements.
Now, years later, it is still on Early Access, and deemed to stay there forever, just because it is dead as a rock. Well, one of many cases that tought me the lesson to stay away from EA (ambiguous *wink, wink*).

When I purchase an early release game, I expect to be told if it has been abandoned by the devs, as this game clearly has been. The physics are acceptable, the graphics are good, the idea seems to have been a good one... and that's all she wrote. The story is nonexistant. There's no challenge. All mobs are passive and just moving scenery. The missions are all the same and it's basically just so boring after a while that it becomes unplayable. A real pity.

Slightly janky. The first 6ish missions at the first dive site, and the first mission of the second dive site is just fetch quests. You go to a location, interact with an object, and go back to your mission giver. (You can teleport back).

Would be nice if the devs unlocked the whole game instead of making me slog through it. Something tells me they are never opening up the real money store again. Is there even enough money in the game to buy everything?

I'm sad for the game because it has very high potential but developers didn't used this potential.

I've been searching a diving game and found this. I watched some videos of the game and liked it.
I liked the game because it gives realistic underwater experience by first-person view, decent underwater designs and sounds.

There is not much things to do in this game, you can finish the game easily within 1 - 1.5 hours.

However, it could be fun to explore places, sea creatures with your friends.

If we look at the game from a technical perspective;
+Graphics are good enough for underwater experience.
+Sounds are good.

-Optimization is bad in some places of the map.
-It's buggy.

So I don't recommend buy this game if you don't have friends to play with. But if you have some friends to play with, wait for discounts.

There is no game like this on the market. I hope some people make a better game like this one.

It has been abandoned by the developers, however what is there is quite good. Its incredibly relaxing swimming around the underwater scenery and the graphics aren't that bad. If you don't mind that there are unfinsihed sections and some things aren't finalised then then this game is quite good. TIP: When you launch the game, launch it via the steam app not desktop icon as the desktop icon will try to open in VR mode whereas steam gives a choice to open in VR or normal.

Quick summary of the gameplay:

"Go 100m over there, grab a thing and bring it back."

Do that 35 times and you get to the Bismarck level that they haven't completed and won't go further in the game. Then all that's left is to do is to swim around polluted waters picking up the 100-500 pieces of garbage that litter the different levels. There's nothing remotely simulator like, no decompression, bends, nitro narcosis, anything like that, you can pop from an airlock into 2500m deep with no ill effects for example.

If you want a half complete flash game with polished graphics and the complexity of a game of fetch, and for some reason want to spend money on it, this is for you. If you want something that you won't complete in 4 hours, look for something else.

Petrov

So I can see why there are mixed reviews, some good and some bad in this game.

I am training to be a scuba diver and hoping to go further with it. So I was going to base the game off that.
The feeling of underwater with the equipment and stuff it is good, feels ok could do with a touch up but early access.
Yes you have choice in equipment but I would like to see some other types of BCDs like a wing set up or something else, as well I think having an option for extra tanks would be good as you run out of air kinda quick.
Adding to the air I think if you have to do a safety stop/ deco stop would be interesting as well- idea?

Fish in the game can react weird or sometimes not at all- see a fish morph into a rock :0
Challenges they are ok, feels like something is missing from it.

Could do with maybe some clam background music for when in the water.

Overall enjoyed the game, it a type of game to just zone out from reality and just chill while playing.
I'd recommend it but I can see why people didn't like it
(Played without VR, I'm broke :/)

When I first saw this game/simulator on sale at Steam, I thought it might be very relaxing to just dive in VR on my HTC Vive. Boy did I ever underestimate this! The environment was stunning, even on the lowest settings! After doing the training sessions in the pool, I was let out to explore the first area. There are no manuals, and some of the functions don't work as expected, or at all (such as the promise to change diver modes, presumably to see yourself in 3rd person), but it IS in Beta after all! I accidentally came upon a Killer whale, and it scared the crap out of me! I was unprepared for the shear size of this beast, and then got scared as it started to come toward me! I didn't yet know if you could be attacked in this simulator (you can't), so I could have swam even closer. The next level allowed me to come up to dolphins and sea turtles, explore a sunken ship, find pearls and treasure! The extra missions and challenges were fun, and there are plenty of them! Even if the game is not finished, it was well worth the $3.99 that I spent, just to have a relaxing diving simulator in VR. Apparently there is some issue by real divers with calling this a simulator. It is a simulator in that same sense that a flight simulator is. It's meant to give some level of experience to those that can't do the real thing (either physically or financially). To those purists, get a grip, and go jump in the water! To everyone else, it is a relaxing and very enjoyable SIMULATION of the quiet beauty that divers can experience, without the danger of running out of air, or running into a real shark! Well worth the money!

Not bad if you can get it on sale, since the game is unfinished and abandoned, there's still plenty to do and explore, but there's also a few of unfinished areas that tell you it's not yet available, which is a bummer.

Graphics are awesome, and LOVE the character Customisation.
Though there is still room for improvement...
The following should be improved/added:
1) Bigger map
2) make it so characters can drown / just hold their breath when their tank runs out
3) Free diving (Without a scuba tank and just breath)
4) Third person (Would be soooo goooood)
5) Extra clothes / gear

But anyway, i personally love the game :)

getting so sick and tired of games never being finished Valve needs to stop allowing early accsses couse of idiot devs like these and start requiring a fully finished game to be published

They stopped trying.. .it had so much potential. I've had this game since the start and it's been years. I'm a diver and I was soo looking forward to this. when I first got it when early access started it was on par for the stage... but now... it kind of makes me sick that they put in enough effort to get it off the ground only to stop really trying.

I got this with a 90% discount - so I paid £1.49
Great little timewaster for that - swimming was fun I guess.
Main thing was the immersion and feeling like I was on holiday, with the reggae
tunes in the background.
Not a lot for full price maybe but discounted - yes!
