Played with Quest 2.

In a world filled with numerous short-length and mindless sandbox games, a game boasting a complete story campaign, substantial length (I completed it in almost 7 hours), polished VR mechanics, smooth gameplay and impressive graphics. It truly deserves more favorable reviews. I nearly shit myself during my first encounter with the Tall Man, making this one of the finest horror games I've ever played in VR.

Walk around aimlessly for hours at a snails pace - your spidey senses are supposed to tell you which direction to go but dont seem to be much help. Bit of a joke really. To give you an idea of how bad this game is, the devs told me to exit the game you have to ctrl-alt-delete. That is how you get out of a faulty application

Played on Valve Index, RTX 3080.

In short:

Good game, BUT... you need the right approach and either like stealth parts or have the patience for such.

Long version:

I took an attempt last year and dropped the game after like an hour of being bored. I was awaiting a horror game which will frighten me the whole time. Today I know better and would say after playing Wraith: This is not a "classic" horror game, but a spooky game.

I wanted to give it another chance this year and did a bit of reading and people told it is building up slowly, but it can be annoying and frustrating. And they were right.

After a bit more than an hour the first stealth section began which got me annoyed so much. After a few deaths I came around it by "cheating" the game and thought that's it now, no more stealth sections... Wrong! There are at least 2-3 more stealth sections coming.

I very admired the story, the atmosphere and the whole experience. It was interesting and got me intrigued to find out what happened. But the stealth sections, which I am in general am no fan of and really bad in, were really annoying. Especially at the end I was so frustrated that I nearly rage quit.

It is a bit sad as this is a good game, but I feel it has driven quite a few players. I have a lot of people with this game in library on my steam list and none of them has finished this - so I can tell it is not just me. Even if you scroll through the reviews here most negative ones have a playtime of around 1 hour, so I can absolutely see why. The beginning is building up too slow and then it gets hard all the sudden.

I wish the devs would have included something to prevent that, may it be different difficulties or a skip option after a few deaths to let all people disregarding of their capabilities see the rest of the game. I know quite a few people who quit after the first stealth section in that game and that is a shame as it is all in all worth playing.

After all, apart from my very big "stealth passages" critique, I will give it a thumbs up though as the rest of the game was enjoyable (or rather scary).

I actually can't remember the last time I have been so bored playing a VR game. I mean bored out of my mind to the point where I just flat out lost interest and quit playing entirely. The dilapidated huge house of a thousand locked doors is not scary in my opinion. Teleportation is extremely wonky, leading you into unintended directions and is insanely slow. This is the sort of teleportation where you hold down a button and stand there watching a marker move along the floor at a snail's pace and then release to teleport. The extremely slow teleportation also makes it incredibly difficult to get away from an enemy's presence. Save checkpoints in this game are also extremely far away. Opening doors with Index controllers is also very awkward and buggy. And it is most often unclear where you need to go or what you need to do next. Gameplay is slowly moving throughout the house taking pictures to trigger past events/memories where you watch characters engage in dialogue, which I found very boring. From watching videos on youtube, this also seems to be a very long game for VR, lasting over 6 hours. There is no way I was going to torture myself for that long. I just found this whole experience to be so dull that I gave up in sheer boredom and moved on to other games.

Edit: Changed my review to negative. This company has abandoned PCVR in favor of the Quest platform. I cannot recommend supporting that practice. This company owes it's success to the PCVR community, yet in return we get a Quest exclusive game (Cities Skylines VR). Consider supporting other devs who wont sellout to the devil.

Played on Index.

Controls are ok, I fixed some stuff up with a binding I posted. Replaced thumbstick click with trackpad click, less pressure to grab, etc. No finger tracking. No issues with the hand positions. 120hz and 130ss no performance issues so far (2080ti). Game actually looks pretty good in the headset. Comfort options are done right. Snap turn, shift turn, smooth turn with speed adjustment. Controller, hmd, or playspace as forward. Vignettes available.

As for the game itself, its slow paced and I'm only 1 hour in so can't give fair judgement yet. Just wanted to chime in on Index specific stuff. So many developers get the controls and feel wrong, but thankfully they did an acceptable job here, so I'm able to focus on the gameplay/story and not worry about fighting the controls.

I'm looking forward to play more!

First impressions: Great game with some pretty nice voice acting, decent visuals (somewhere near walking dead sas), and a slow pace. Now I've played a bit more, still a stellar game so far. And I promise it is TERRIFYING

For a first impression, it seems to be an interesting game with good graphics, not so scary the first hour I played, more chill but I can imagine that it gets a little more intense the further you get. Some minor settings with the index control may be needed

Will continue to play!

Spoiler free review !!
Very good vr horror game proberbly the best ive played in a while.
I have played around 2 hours and i am only 15% complete.
The story is great yes there is a story and its good.
If you ever have been to a theme park and been in a dark ride this game is kinda like that or a horror house.
The way some of "things" move around , act or scare in general is really well done. there is suspense, jump scares and a hell lot of wetting yourself.
I give this at least a solid 8.5-9 /10 !
worth the price if you like horrors or want something scary to play. Hope this helps someone out there.
Only downside to why i took a point off is because when i used a save point i did crash once but even so i did not lose any gametime.

Finally a good VR horror game that looks good...at least on the htc vive (Unlike a lot of other blurry mess looking games) and feels good to play and has every setting a game need from comfort vignette to touch to walk....just all of it. The stealth gameplay is working as it should be, we have ghost powers that....sometimes work sometimes not much but at least looks dam cool and the game wont rely on cheap nonstop jumpscares to scare you, instead it has the enemies and the sounds that will make you scream. I only managed to bug out the game 2 or 3 times and finding the gas key near the end was a real pain in my ass but other than that i had a lot of fun wiht the game.....its a bit short and the mc story is a bit meh but the other characters are well written at least.....and the jumpscare at the end was really necessary? XD

Maybe I'll give it another try later.

Mobile port equivalent of a VR game, clearly made with the Quest in mind, so feels very watered down on something like the Index. Shame, was really looking forward to something that brought back Alien Isolation vibes.

Couldn't play more than 20 minutes because this is one of these games were you walk painfully slow even when "sprinting", but that wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that strafing is slower than walking forward, so every time you change direction or look around while walking you'll get micro-slowed down here and there. 20 min later I was sweating and nauseous. Hard pass.

Since I'm hating, one more thing: "Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife" is just a plain stupid name. Sounds like something a teenager would pick for their amateur movie. Pick one title guys, you can't have three. If this is how you go about things, then maybe it's better I didn't get too far.

Would probably be an awesome game. If it actually worked. Which it doesn't. I just see a black screen. All my drivers are up to date and I've had no issues with any of my other games. If I need to jump through hoops to play a game, then the game isn't worth it. I should just download and it plays. Period.

This is a tough review for me - I had been looking forward to this game for a very long time and I just found the entire experience to be disappointing. I love VR and horror experiences, but this game is a bore. The gameplay loop is just a series of fetch quests, the mansion is not really scary - more creepy. I couldn't get interested in the story, and navigating the mansion started feeling like a chore. You will run into some boss like figures in the game that you have to stealth past, but really you are just waiting for the dumb AI to walk itself into a corner so you can buy enough time to sneak by. There is not a lot of game skill required. On top of that, the character models and levels are bit - Quest-like. For $30, I would have appreciated some better looking graphics for a PCVR game in 2021.

It's not often clear where I am supposed to go next - and while I don't want my hand held for the entire experience, I couldn't stand running around the mansion in circles for a half an hour at a time, trying to find an item. The "indicator" on your hand that leads you to the next objective often lead me into a dead end that had no objective to complete. I made it to the 80% completion mark with about half of the achievements unlocked - and I don't care enough to see the ending.

I just don't think this game is worth $30. When I compare that price tag against other top VR games, I believe this game falls short of the mark. If you are really itching for a horror/creepy experience, I would buy this for $10, maybe $15. This game scores a 2/5 for me.

I'm not sure why this game doesn't get more reviews. It's a great horror game. Slow, yes but it's not an action packed shoot'em up.

We're talking story driven, mystery revealing horror. It's certainly different. Certainly good.

So after 8h I played it through 100%. As a WoD fan who has no idea about the WTO, it was a really nice experience.
You can understand everything without any background knowledge of the universe. The story itself was nothing extraordinary
but good. I had a few WTF moments and the story remained tense until the end,At least for me. The gameplay is pretty simple and easy to understand, and even if the house is huge, I got a good overview after a short time.
The moments against the spectres are for someone like me who gets frightened very quickly well, interesting :D But I got used to them too and a few spots became very frustrating. But I had a lot of fun playing, at least in the moments when I wouldn't have liked to just wait in a corner. If I had to say something negative, it would be if you were still looking for notes like me even though you've been everywhere, running is so infinitely slow. And that sometimes the "gripping system" at least on the oculus quest 2 is really modest.
TL;DR
The game is fun and looks good, you can understand it without knowing WTO.
But it can quickly get frustrating if you hang on one spectre for too long.

I can recommend it and hope for more WoD VR games! :)

No problems going through the game with oculus rift. Made me having goosebumps half of the time. Roughly 8 hours for 100% completion. Good game.

PROS: Rich and interesting story + Great ambientance + No cheap jumpscares but tension + Very realistic hands and arms + Easy puzzles and object use that add variety to the gameplay

CONS: Hands go through objects and walls + Walking is slow and if you don't move straight you go even slower + Not so scary as i tought + Confusing final about what to do

Disappointing, although far from incompetent. Purchased out of desperation for any sort of new mid-budget VR game, Wraith delivered reasonable first impressions. There’s a generous number of locomotion/comfort settings and seeing that a few gameplay elements were lifted from certain games gave the impression that Wraith was going to be very contemporary (that is, well-informed on others’ successes). It also runs remarkably well on my increasingly obsolete PC.

The unnerving sound design is a commendable source of fear. In tandem with the anxiety from any sort of VR horror, the audio was strong enough to strain my scary-game-comfort-boundaries before the game offered any actual threats. These moments are more akin to The Room VR where drinking in the atmosphere without having to brace for impact on scares is an intoxicating sensation. Unfortunately, Wraith’s acclaimed slow burn is routinely interrupted by the startling exposition ghosts. I suppose soft jumpscares might help keep you on your toes, but considering that the story is nothing special, they’re more inconvenient than immersive.

Furthermore, nothing breaks the grip of fear like losing several minutes of progress to a climactic scare from janky AI. Monsters may be unbelievably stressful at first, but sparse checkpoints and the creatures’ inorganic movements channel the fight-or-flight fear into fervorous frustration. Sound might be a huge part of Wraith, but it’s hard to know whether thrown bottles had a distracting effect or not. Even if you can stun your pursuers, running isn’t really the protagonist’s forte. At least the game is usually clear about when monsters will appear and lets you tour your soon-to-be escape route before the encounter.

As Wraith progresses, the abundance of door/key puzzles and the unremarkable story drains most of the motivation to push past the stress. Most of the later playtime is sadly resigned to painfully slow strolls through the same hallways with occasional moments of being drastically uncomfortable. Wraith is worth it if you're desperately in need of a mid-range VR game, find horror appealing, can tolerate some repetition, and have run out of five-star custom maps in Alyx. Such a low Steam rating isn’t exactly appropriate, although it's certainly easier to criticize here on PC. Its original home on the Quest gave it more appeal. At the very least, Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife could do with a more appropriate level of sequel-confidence in its titles.

Bottom Line: Get this game on sale....NOT WORTH 30.00! I took my time and did a lot of exploring..thus played for a little over 9 hours.

Graphics are not bad; story is average; but game play and controls are bad. Devs over did it with the stealth required through multiple locations in the game...YOU CANNOT proceed until you have managed to get past the threat (i.e., Spectre, broken woman, etc). There is no combat and you have to rely on trial and error at the rate of dying at least 6-12 times before you are successful in neutralizing the threat...or should I say before you find a way to get past the threat. It really is not scary albeit there are some good jump scares...but overall not scary.

Also, this game should have been titled...Wandering Aimlessly in Oblivion. A lot of walking and not much direction or clues where to go....the task at hand is clearly given in your notes but as far as where you need to go or do, that is a WAG (wild ass guess).

Not a bad game but not one of the better VR games...I rate it 7/10. Recommended only if on sale.

I was hesitant because of the mixed reception, but this game really is the whole package for fellow horror fans
The setting is interesting, the story is fast moving and keeps you engaged and moving throughout the mansion. Both the sound design and voice talent is top notch, the game is dripping with atmosphere and really knows when to pack a punch and when to let you breathe.
There are many unique monster encounters, both scripted and unscripted, and i never felt any of them overstayed their welcome.
I really couldn't recommend this game enough if you're into VR horror, because lets be honest, it's slim pickings out here when it comes to quality horror experiences.

Too much hype, too little delivery. The basic game idea is neat with the ghost sense, but it's not implemented well, photographing memories is more of a hassle than something fun, the only good thing about it is the atmosphere. Unlucky, could have been way better. Can only recommend it for $5-$10 in a sale

Even though this game has some missteps, I enjoyed it. The exploration is good and intriguing, the story is nice, and the concept of playing as a ghost is good as well. Also the freaky encounters with other ghosts is scary and cool. I think that the "hide and seek" mechanism of the encounters could be done better, it became a bit tedious over time, but yet it was scary and enjoyable.

As for the technical aspect, I did not have any issues playing on the Oculus Quest 2, with Air Link, not Virtual Desktop.

I played for more than two hours having not fun in order to understand why this game is so boring compared to other vr horror games, even though there is a premium effort and quality put here in every sense.

You can see several flawless implementations of vr mechanics here, like nice hands with IK arms, finger positions around grabbed objects and several vr-related options in the settings, etc. Yet, you will most probably crave more to enjoy this game, like setting the walking speed, or disable its acceleration like strange running behavior. Actually, there is no running here. There is baby crawling as walking, and speed walking for just a second when you push the left stick. I can guess that slow movement is a deliberate choice for its required opponent encounter or stealth mechanics rather than comfort concerns. But most of the time, it makes the game tedious and unexciting if we also add being in a desaturated grayish indoor atmosphere.

There is actually a remarkable attempt here to have flawless cool graphics with consistent lighting and antialiased visuals. And the place has modern stylish architecture, which is a cliche-breaking choice considering many horror games have an old, dusty or victorian mansion. Add quality voiceovers, characters, dialogs, story. Yet, nothing seemed to save the dull experience for me for the first two hours.

Not recommended especially if you set high expectations according to its price range.
