I've been a WW2 Online player since I was 12, so around 12 years ago and recently I rejoined back to see how's the game going.
I may be biased, but I really enjoy this game as it offers something what no other game offers and that is proper combined arms and large battles which can quite literally last irl days

The community is great too and no question will go unanswered. Keep in mind that when you get into the game, there's a lot that's going on and the other players can have up to 20 years of experience (this game is from 1999!)

Also, the game player numbers aren't all that's shown here because CRS also has their own local game download (like WarThunder has)

Yes, the graphics aren't good, but they just look the perfectly nostalgic to me. And it works.

I'm playing this game since 2006 /before Steam time :)/
It has unique concept but you need at least 200 concurrent players to enjoy it. I recommend but caution - this is not a world of warcraft. BTW I hope that before I die i will take part in landing in Britain. I hope I will shoot at you someday.

GAMEPLAY... If gameplay is your primary concern, then this game claps the competition. I believe the entire game is being redone in UE5 within the not too distant future. Until then ill put up with the graphics as there is literally nothing like this game out there. Stopped playing battle field and COD for this a year ago. AIR/LAND/SEA on the biggest live map ever in a FPS....

This is one of those games you always come back too for that good old classic game play of the early 2000s and not only that it holds multiple world records for reasons. If it was not for this game you would not see may cool things you see in games today and even then most games still don't hold up to this standard anymore. 24 hour battles that never end is what more games need to do and i'm confused on why more devs don't . All I know is i'm supporting this game and your new title choke point. You guys are doing great things and I can't wait see our community truly grow when they see your dreams and passion unfold. All I know is when this game gets revamped on unreal 4 best beleave you will be making history once again. All in all thanks for everything you guys do for this game.

I absolutely love this game, It's a older game, but the concept behind the game is A1. The developers are incredible and constantly working to improve the game for the playerbase. I've played this game on and off for almost 5 years now, and I've loved every minute i've played. I don't have many hours on the steam version, as I used to use their launcher years ago.

The developers are currently working to get this game into the unreal engine 5 soon aswell, and it will be taking the game market by surprise once they get UR5. Incredible game, definitely check it out!!

If you like tactical shooter games that require patience, coordination and communication, then this game is for you! I now play on the organic version downloaded from the website versus steam. It is not a pay to win as you can definitely deal some damage using the most basic classes available as a free-to-play account. The rifleman class is by far one of the best classes in the game for infantry! The FTP tanks and air are useful in the beginning of a campaign. Which is a war that starts off in 1939 and progresses through 1944 via a tier system in which more equipment will be introduced to the game. An average campaign length can be anywhere from a few days to a few months. I highly recommend hopping onto the discord and jump into a a voice chat channel and use the Voice comms in-game to ask questions if you need any help. This game has a steep learning curve much like the ARMA games. Most of the playerbase has been here since day 1 which started June 6, 2001.

It's pretty much like any server but it is the only one you can play on. Keep in mind the devs can do anything from put ships in the air to make trucks float. There is no telling what may happen. Try for free but pay the stupid subscription at your own risk.

Fun and interesting gameplay , relies on community and co operation , the basic by todays standards graphics engine is enough to support a careful and calculated thrill of victory and keeps me coming back in the face of certain defeat.

If you have to play this game,

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT BUY THE SUBSCRIPTION OVER STEAM;

It doesn't work, you won't have any of the benefits. The developers have admitted themselves that this is a problem and have not found a fix yet.

So if you have to play, do it off steam.

I like this game, it has a sweet retro feelings to it and he concept is unique, a persistent open world battlefield 24/7 where everything is possible. This is the nightmare of every CoD player and the wet dream of every war gamer. What I like about this game is that you are not going to do the same crap over and over again as seen in other war games. You are not going to fight El Alamein, Stalingrad, Ardennes, Normandy over and over and over again. There is nothing fixed here in this game. Sometimes you may experience only small clashes, other times you may be in the middle of a battle for Berlin style of fight hiding in the bunker surrounded by enemies. Major battles can boom up anywhere anytime, with no or little warning so be always prepared. Its to complicated for CoD lovers but if you love realism and struggle. This is for you. Trust me!

Not gonna let some of these negative "reviews" convice me that this game isnt a blast. Most of those reviews come from people who put no time in that game at all.

Store page is clear that the "free" version is just reserve riflemen. It's a way for newcomers to get their feet wet and see if this game is worth them committing to it. Past that, players can choose one of the DLC's to build themselves a custom experience for themselves if they don't see themselves playing every unit type. Or go premium to play around with everything as they unlock it like myself. and the dlc's are a one time purchase and available forever after that. no addition money needed with that option.

This game isn't like any other game out there. Don't even think of it as a typical "game" for it would be more acurate to call it a War Simulator. Everything is player generated. Every tank, plane, ship & soldier is controlled by another human. No battle is the same, no campaign is the same.

Once you get into your first big battle, it'll all click. You'll see what the hype is about. You'll see why this game and its community is still around. And like myself, you'll get hooked.

And to add one more positive about this game, its community. This community took me in as one of its own the very first day I started playing. I never came across another communtiy that's as open and friendly as this one. How many other games can you say that for? I would bet you could count them on one hand and that's if you can name ay at all.

So if any of you guys are on the fence about trying this game out, give it go! You literally have nothing to lose by checking it out, charging across some fields under LMG and artillery fire. Storming into enemy held towns and cities, liberating sheep fields across a MASSIVE open world.

So grab your toothbrush, pull up your socks and hop on The Bang Bus. 'Cause we're going to war!!!

( OLD- do not pay for this game, its not worth it, i subbed and every time i despawned, died, or went into the division menu, i got a message telling me to sub. complete waste of money, this game would be great if you had full access from the start, but untill they have it, theres better games out there, and some are actually free. waste your money if you want. but the company might still harrase you even if you pay. ) Update - game has undergone some changes so its in need of a new review, I'm currently unable to make one so look into it a bit yourselvs. ill make one sometime in the future when I am able.

Best overall FPS WW2 warfare simulator available.
Very good tank simulator.
You can also use towed guns, ships and planes.
First game I signed up for a subscription this week.

I love the game engine. (reminds me of good ol' Operation Flashpoint)
I love the projectile physics.
I love the big map.
I love the distance fights in terrain as well as close combat in woods and cities.
I love the damage model.
I love the complexity. Players who think this is too complex should just stop playing it, because they are too stupid :) Take some time to work into it, god damn it!

Anything can happen in this game.
Enemy can be everywhere.

Friendly Fire is off, which sucks. But on the other hand, there are so many stupid underage newbie recruits online and they cannot resist shooting at their own side's soldiers, just because there is not enough COD action in the first minute of the game...
And my PzIIC tank jumps and sometimes falls over when driving over a little hill, which indicates that the physics of vehicle vs. terrain could be improved.

But in general this is a beautiful masterpiece.
I simply do not care about the bad reviews.
It is better than Planetside 2 in many ways. There are no goofy invisible infiltrator classes or such stupid things.
Never seen any cheater or other broad misbehaviour. (Except many retarded newbies.)
Support was cool and answered my questions about subscription etc.

It's a pity you cannot download the game for free anymore. Even for free to play you have to buy the lowest subscription for one month and cancel it to get the game and the account. That is bad because it is harder to convince friends.

Use WW2online via Steam only and your Steam account will be tied to one WW2online account and the subscription can be managed easily and without error directly from the Steam user interface. It is working well.

Regarding subscription please note that the in-game unit types you can use are subject to these rules:
- Locked because your rank is too low
- Locked because your subscription model is too low

With subscription model 1 you can use these types: 1 air 3 Infantry 2 tanks 2 towed 1 soft vehicle
That is good.
The battles are superb. I love them. Go get subscription type 1 and cancel if you want and play further for free. Joining vehicles is always for free. (If any commander is requesting crew... ask your friends :) Crew can man any position in any vehicle regardless of subscription and rank.)

Overall the new subscription model is not unintelligent. It balances the game well. The new system encourages use of soft unarmoured unit types (infantry and towed mostly) and crew. I like it. But I think subscription model 1 for 4,99 EUR would be more reasonable. Really.

I knew the game for many many years and started this year. It is good as I always thought it would be. Except for the visually abstract engine it really simulates warfare in a nice way.

Wish i could rate good, but its pay to play if you want anything to use.

EDIT: I feel that this game would have an increased player amount if they made it a completely free to play game and get rid of the subscription allowing you to use what ever you wanted. They could then add something that pops up every hour or two that says something like, please donate some money, this would be optional. But donating something like at least $1 would cause this donation box to never appear again.

I'm sorry, but, what new people pay per month for terrible documentation, screwball scoring and dialup-era graphics makes it difficult for me to engage as a modern gamer or even an old Warbirds fan. For this much money per month per user, it's hard to identify what we're paying the developers to -do-, since most of the documentation has been developed by players, and the game looks like it would be right at home on Windows95 and a 56K dialup connection.

Be prepared to get slaughtered, especially as a pilot, as the best weapons aren't available to you and there's no clear way of leveling up. There's not even a significant training mode to go out as a pilot and get some target practice. The infantry stuff is no different than any other FPS, but, they've got an adequate little firing range so you can get that sorted out.

The forums talk about the hardcore players who have been at it since 2001, which is great for them but, basically, as a new player you're paying a monthly fee to be their target practice.

As a flight "simulator" the modeling is not that bad even though you'll fly for 20 minutes on the way to a target just to get killed by something you never even saw. There's no customer service: I had a tech support issue and they forgot out be, but fortunately another player answered my question in a forum. Otherwise, you just get flippant responses from forum moderators and long-time players who seem to want to make you feel bad for preferring games with better graphics, documentation and playability but which aren't as strategically "realistic." (Uhh...) Basically, you hear a lot of excuses for why it's the way it is, but, it's literally a lot to buy.

I've been paying the monthly fee for about a year now, and I keep coming back to it about once a month to see if I like it, but, at this point I've given them enough of my time and money that I feel like I can say what I want, which is that this game is terribly disappointing especially for the cost. I'm simply not sure why I'm paying for this each month, because there's only one server, there's not very much data involved, and, it's just not that entertaining.

Garbage.

EDIT: I bought a starter sub, which was a total mistake.

    • I still get interrupted with an "UPGRADE NOW" screen after every mission that I can't ignore and have to click through
    • Can't spawn any fighting vehicles except IIc and 232 which is laughable when there are mid and late-war tanks driving around.
    • despite being half the cost of the premium sub the starter sub only allows a handful of units, it's barely better than F2P
    • the stuff that my sub does allow I still can't spawn because there is a massive grind wall, 100 points for rank two, 300 points for rank three and 500 points for rank four...and basic units like mortarmen are rank five for some reason
    • I can't spawn semi-automatic rifle units even though I have enough rank for them
    • every rifle is treated like a sniper rifle in that it has massive sway applied to it unless you hold your breath, even when proned out
    • nearly all of the infantry combat is at very close range and uses automatic weapons
    • SMGs are shotguns and there's no point to holding your fire, just run and hose while zig-zagging
    • animations and rubber-banding are so bad that you can run through an open field and avoid rifle fire just by zig-zagging
    • melee is a joke so fights between riflemen at close range are comical as both players dance while reloading 5 feet away
    • there is no grenade key, grenades are thrown very slowly, hard to aim and switching to and from grenades takes forever
    • footsteps are so loud that you can use them as radar, you can hear another player literally crawling around a depot 50 meters away through two walls and upstairs
    • capturing a depot takes several minutes even with multiple people
    • tanks are everywhere, way too common for a WW2 simulation, and frequently ruin any fun infantry fight you might be having

There's one battle on the server right now and it's maybe 15 vs 15. The system is spamming their fundraiser, and when you finally go to it you see they're asking for 35 grand, and like nine people are responsible for half of all the money raised. So they're reliant on whales to fund everything and not subs like me.

I would not recomend this game to anyone. The grapics are so bad you can not tell when you have killed a tank. The community is even worse. there are not enough players to make this game fun. You can easlily spawn in and not see a enemy for 2-3 hours . Im not complaining about the dificulty of the game. I loved the fact that it was difficult. But the game is unplayable due to the fact that you must message a player in "high Command " in order to cap an objective. And in my 60 hours playing i never once got a hc to reply to my message often times wasteing hours of my time just to have to despawn . This game is horrible concitering I was paying 14$ every month. dont waste your time with this game. You will regret it to be completely honest. -- PS im the lead dev for a game company so i understand how games are made. > COULD OF BEEN DONE BETTER.

I have been playing WW2 Online off and on since it first released so many years ago. I have always said that a game.. any game.. can only be judged in comparison to it's peers. Even today.. WW2Online has no peers. There are other WW2 shooter games .. there are far prettier games .. but none rise to rival WW2Online as peers.

WW2Online is a massive game of capture the flag. Where players set the strategy.. bond together to accomplish goals.. and do so with real supply, and authetic equipment. Everyone plays on the same massive map with no zones or loading screens. You can travel from one end of the map to the other.

Typical Gameplay: You log in with an infantry unit into a town under assault.. you run to a capture point and kill the enemy trying to capture it.. but run outside again to be face to face with an enemy tank... who blows you up.. so you spawn you own tank and careen through town till your looking directly face on with that enemy tank.. and you fire, but your face on.. and your shot goes richocheting off of his strongest armor. Realizing your time is limited you throw into reverse and try to fade back the alleyway you emerged from.. exposing your side... the shot is quick and precise. So you swap personas.. and log in a Fighter Bomber.. and drop two eggs on his head. So on and so on.. it can be a lot of fun.

WW2 Online still remains the uncontested sole entrant and absolute reigning champion of the genre that they created.

One last point.. the devs have always played this game... lot of respect to the Rats.

Banned because of snowflakes and more than a THOUSAND dollars of subscription money wasted on this game.

Over 2,000 hours wasted in my life, while I should've been doing more manly things than play with a bunch of divorced and frustrated middle aged men whose wives abandoned them from playing this game day and night for 20 years now. Can't forget the soy boys who cant get laid .

This one dude in high command keeps bragging about how he makes a living riding a bicycle, cant forget bludngut that damn drunk, and also kms the bus driver who manages a part of the game.

No actual developers, the owner takes his wife's money as a radiologist to cram into his childhood game to pay shady people who are willing to work on this mess of a game.

Wont ban cheaters but are woke enough to ban people who say zeig heil.

This game probably made my back posture deteriorate, you could tell from my chair. Eye and brain cancer has developed, I blame aomercy constantly boasting her being passed around the last convention.

Do away with the Montly Subscription!! $10/month for an 11 year game is crazy! It is a fun game with a very hard learning curve. I do not recommend this game even though I love it. If you dont pay the $10 to $15 a month depending on subscription you chose then all you get to do is use a rifleman. Trust me there is no fun in that! Without paying a subscription you hare only allowed the crappiest units on the battlefield!

Excellent game, but has a high learning curve for any new player. It will take time, effort, hopping on discord (to coordinate with other players) and asking a LOT of questions in order to become good at the game. However, once you master the basics, the game opens up and offers unlimited opportunity to enjoy. Whether its as an infantry man, tanker, pilot or artilleryman. There's no more accomplished feeling in a game than working with a few dozen other players to capture a defended town or city.

Graphics and some of the gameplay are definitely antiquated, but the game has been releasing new content every few months and part of that plan is an overall graphical upgrade.

I have been a subscriber on and off now for 11 years and have seen this game develop into what it is now.
I have always been a gamer that strives for a bit more realism and this game is hands down the best around!
I came from BF1942 in 2002/03 and then the mod Forgotten Hope. A fellow clanner introduced me to WW2 online and I have never had a gaming experience like it anywhere else.
Yes it may look dated but look at the size of the map? Graphics updates are in the pipeline but if its gameplay you want then stick around in this game for a bit longer and squad up with some veterans that can teach you the ropes.
Planes flying at realistic speeds strafing enemy, tanks rolling in real time with realistic cannon sites and also Navy! Who can forget Navy!
Hell this game just never gets old!

If you are new to this game please ask for help because there is a lot to learn!

It's unfortunate that this game is now in the state that it's in. The game itself is a great concept and it was such a good game. I played the game heavily for 16 years. I played both sides extensively. Unfortunately, WWII Online can't figure out what it wants to be. It can't seem to figure out if it wants to be a MILSIM, a game, or both. The problem with that is the development often takes sort of a character of dissociative identity disorder where realism is sacrosanct in some areas and game play trumps realism in other areas. CRS will often justify a decision based on realism one minute and then defend fudging things for the sake of gameplay the next. Yet all the while you'll be told your playing the most realistic simulation ever created. The game's home page even cites "Realism is taken to a new level".

None of this would be a problem if it were not for the fact that it makes it impossible to have a discussion with CRS about game issues. Based on their take on any given issue you'll be told that they can't do something because of realism or something was done or left undone for the sake of game play. I'll give an example. CRS just announced that they were going to fix the LMG so that it gets used in it's more historical role of a support weapon. The weapon in game has been used as an SMG for years and has been the bane of the Allied side and subject of countless forum threads. The Axis MG34 was superior to it's counterparts in the non historical SMG role due to rate of fire and ammunition capacity. There is no question the weapon was gamey and needed to be fixed if CRS did indeed wanted to be used in its historical role. CRS announced they would apply a fix to all LMGs in the game across the board. So far so good. It sounds fair enough. Except that when you point out that all infantry weapons in game are over done due to the ability to jog and fire accurately, CRS will actually delete your posts on their forums for pointing that out. With 22 years of weapons training under my belt I can pretty confidently say that it is very difficult to engage a target accurately while jogging. Furthermore, in a discussion with the CEO he called fixing all weapons to behave in a realistic state "draconian". This ends up making the whole "fix" appear as bias move by CRS to only "fix" the Axis LMG whether they intended it that way or not. CRS chooses to hide behind the realism veil here to justify the "fix" while leaving all other infantry weapons in game an out and out falsehood in terms of the same abilities the LMG was "fixed" for. It's a common belief among the Axis player base that the Axis infantry kit is a trump card in the early tiers, which represent the early years of the war, against Allied heavy tanks and Allied air supremacy. In addition, some players also seem to think the Allied SMGs are superior in game, the same SMGs that are still allowed to jog and shoot. The problem with CRS' selective realism in this instance is that it comes off as side bias to the Axis folks to prize the infantry kit.

It wouldn't be problem if CRS would just admit that things need to be fudged for the sake of gameplay and balance and call it a day. However, in other areas they insist on strict realism. Take that Allied air supremacy I mentioned above as an example. Due to game dynamics the Luftwaffe doesn't really compete in game. The capture dynamics of the game revolve around capturing flags in a town that has an active attack objective on it. This means that most air combat in game takes place over these small towns as both sides battle for air superiority for their respective close air support aircraft. The problem is that Allied aircraft such as the spitfire were designed to "turn and burn" and the capture dynamic of the game plays to that strength. The Luftwaffe aircraft on the other hand were designed to be interceptors that operated at a much higher altitude. This is especially true as the war went on since they were built to run down heavy for engine bombers at altitude. Consequently, over time the Allied planes have dominated the skies right over the towns with attack objectives. Allied planes conducting close air support have all the loiter time they want and are almost completely uncontested. Axis close air support aircraft on the other hand are shot down almost immediately because their supporting fighters are up at altitude just hoping to use "boom and zoom" tactics to get lucky and catch an Allied fighter off guard who strayed to high. Not to mention the skill floor for both applying the tactics and tweaking the planes to fly correctly is much higher for the Axis to apply those tactics. Over time, this has lead to the near complete decimation of the Luftwaffe in terms of pilots willing to fly in game while the Allies enjoy an almost complete air supremacy over the in game battlefield. Any suggestion that maybe the Axis planes should be tweaked to "turn and burn" for the sake of gameplay immediately gets rejected by CRS on the grounds of realism.

Yet until recently, equipment was introduced in game in tier sets. Some of those tier sets were completely off in terms of realism. For example 1942 tanks like the Tiger were introduced in game with 1944 tanks like the Sherman 76. CRS always defended these type of non historical introductions as being done for the sake of game play. Yet no such game play concession was made for the Luftwaffe issue related above. In fact, to date no contemporary heavy armor from 1944 for the Axis has been modeled in the game with the Sherman 76 or Sherman Firefly. Again, selective realism at play.

Another issue with the game (assuming you've bothered to read this far) is the spawning dynamics of the game. The game heavily revolves around fixed spawns that are easily camped. Unfortunately this goes for both attackers and defenders. The current development team changed the spawning dynamics for attacks. Rather than allowing infantry placed spawns that are dynamic the game now requires trucks to place hardened spawns. Infantry combat has markedly decreased in game. Think occasional skirmish rather than massive battles. The spawns themselves are easily camped by tanks in game because defenders can spawn armor much closer to the action. So even if you bring your own armor to start an attack it will soon be wiped out and the hardened infantry spawns for the attack will be camped. The game has become spawn camp online with a good amount of people playing nothing but defense since the game now discourages attack.

All of this had a huge effect on player numbers. If you look on the forums open to the public you will find a large number of threads and posts dedicated to the lack of player numbers. It's unfortunate, in that, the game is designed around having large numbers of players for the thing to run. The lack of players really hurts systems like the mobile spawning mentioned above and High Command system which, although integral to the game, often has no one to man it. When the High Command system has no one manning it, decent attack objectives are not put in place and brigades are not moved at all. The game flat out breaks.

Last, but certainly not least, this is no longer a professional development studio. It is a group of players who volunteer in their spare time to keep the game moving forward. The game cannot really afford full time professional programmers for support and requires fund raisers to keep the lights on. While admirable that these folks are willing to put their time in and attempt to keep the thing alive, it just doesn't cut it from a development stand point. All development is exceedingly slow and game flaws like the ones above are defended ad nauseum by the volunteer team. When concerns such as the ones above are brought up, you are almost guaranteed to have that post deleted and warnings issued to you.

Stay away. The game is no longer worth it.

Overly complicated controls and long, boring gameplay. I know that it's meant to be realistic, but it's still a video game.

It’s great fun, it’s huge, it’s difficult, you’ll probably die a lot. The UI is old and can be cumbersome but after a couple hours and some YouTube videos it comes together. This is one of my favorite WWII games and compared to any other combined arms game out there, this crushes all of them. Yes it is ancient but honestly still worth checking out if you lean on the simulation side of the house. They don't make games like this anymore and it's a damn shame. It was one of the first MMOFPS games created for the PC and it’s still going, because the people who play still support it. The devs of this game are small, but very passionate and helpful about any issues.

I'd say give it a try if you like more complicated unforgiving games. There's nothing quite like being a tiny cog in the wheel, when you see the scale of the game you'll see what I mean. If you want something super easy and shiny then just keep on looking.

TLDR; If you're a gameplay > graphics person and like hardcore games about WWII it's going to be fun.

This is a game I wish many others would do. When you say open world, it's open world, No loading screens, traveling around is realist. Combat has it's ups and downs, but watching the explosion of some planes/tanks is amazing view.

If you like simulators, big scale and ww2 - you have to try it out. There is nothing even close to this game. It's been around for about 20 years and graphics aren't great due to this. But the depth of the gameplay and the combined arms warfare with actual players in every plane, every tank and behind every rifle is still very unique and fascinating. If you like it and can afford it, take a subscription. It's how the game is meant to be played.

WWII Online is a great game. The Gameplay is awesome. The Battles are realistic. The Game lets you be in the Army,Navy and Air Force. You can be a German,British,French,American and sometimes an Italian Soldier. This is a great ww2 shooter game. There are a few flaws. The Graphics are outdated. You cant fight on all fronts in the war like in the USSR,Africa, or Asia just Western Europe. The huge map doesnt change. And you cant use many weapons from wwII in this game .There is very little weapons to use unless you have a suscription. There are lack of bombers, planes and just new weapons to use every now and then but this is still a good game. Its WW2 after all. I think people should try out this game, its very interesting.

World War 2 Online is a special game. As someone who has dabbled in the game for almost 1000 hours I can tell you that while it may be dated, It is unique and It has a very good community. Once you get past the learning curve, and find a group of people to link up with, you will go far and do well. I found my niche in the German Luftwaffe. After connecting and joining a group of Axis pilots, I found my skills improving and started to see myself climbing the stat rankings. To me, the whole concept of a war playing out on an actual representation of Europe was the immediate attraction for me. The community is small, but the developers are doing the best they can to keep the game alive and improve it, which is no small task for a 20 year old game. It is a game that has been around for a very long time and I hope it is still there a long time from now.

I have played this game off and on for about ten years. It is a truly unique game. I have never found another game which combines the depth and scale of a whole war with the experience of playing as an individual soldier. Are the graphics old? yes. Are the interfaces slightly clunky? yes. Is there a steep learning curve? Absolutely. But those shortcomings are trivial compared to the experience in this game.

The game plays in cycles called campaigns. Each campaign lasts a month or so. In each campaign, the axis and allies fight over northern france, western germany, and southern england. A high command made up of experienced players moves divisions and brigades around the map. They decide what towns to attack, what bridges need demolition, etc. As a player, when you enter the game world to fight, you use units from these divisions and brigades. This means that your actions in the game use up actual supplies. Furthermore, you fight to take or defend towns in real time. Slowly, as the campaign progresses, the frontlines shift. Some nights you may be desperately defending towns with dwindelling supply and high casualties. Other nights you might be Storming an enemy airfield, or taking part in a huge tank battle, or an amphibious fight, or anything else. And all of this has real effects on the outcome of the campaign/war.

The scale of the game doesnt stop at the strategic level. At the tactical level you can play as infantry, tanks, boats, AT and AA guns, fighters, bombers. Also, as a campaign progresses, so to does the level of technology. In the early campaign, there is 1940 equipment. As the weeks go by, bigger better tanks appear and a lot more automatic weapons start to replace rifles. Finally the americans arrive in the campaign and bazookas drastically change the role of tanks in the fight.

The particulars of combat are very rewarding as well. Yes, the learning curve is high, and yes, it is unrelentlessly difficult. But i'll be damned if that doesn't make the victories ever more sweet. For instance, in tanks, you have to control all your crew members in the first person. No world of tanks third person luxury here. You become instantly aware how easy it is for enemy infantry to creep up on you. There are also no enemy marks on the map. Instead, all enemy marks on the map are placed by other payers as they spot the enemy. This contributes to a real, uncertain fog of war.

The best advice I can give is to try the game on free to play. But if you do, make sure to use the in game chat for help and direction. Also, there is an official discord for both the axis and the allied side. Get on there and learn from all the veteran players.

Gun.

Edit: I feel I should edit this review as I've put in, erm, a LOT more hours into this game since review. I've really come to enjoy the pace of this game. This is not a twitch shooter where you will be gunned down within five seconds of spawning. Quite the opposite. Things take time in WWIIOL, and that's for the better. The physical scale is already epic enough, but what really makes it stand out is the amount of time, effort, commitment, teamwork, and tactics needed to prevail against the enemy. There's simply nothing else like it in video games, it's almost like the EVE Online of shooters.

I originally bashed the game for it's combat when outside of towns, and I've learned a lot since. There is always something to do, always something to help out your team. Whether it's guarding, pulling a vehicle (huge thing I missed out on when I posted my original review!) or scouting out enemy positions, the game simply never stops. It truly is a virtual battlefield, and it never sleeps.

So yeah, it's a steep learning curve, and if you're ADD inclined, well, it may not grab you right away. But this game is simply one of a kind. It gives me a rush I don't find anywhere else. Delayed gratification is a hell of a thing. S! - sullivca

P.S. The people complaining about graphics are children. The gameplay is what counts, and this one has it in spades.

---

A truly unique game with some terrible flaws. WWII Online is at its best when you're fighting building by building for a town. The in-game communication and combined arms model really shine here. There's nothing else like it. Due to low population and the massive amount of space between towns though, this doesn't happen as much as you'd like. You'll often find yourself spawning kilometers from a town or spawning into a town where the enemy is kilometers away. The shooting is jank but if you can get access to SMG's or get good with the rifle, it is manageable. Additionally, the stamina model is annoying as hell. I think you can get away with the sheer size of the map or the very limited stamina model, but not both. The vets are genuinely helpful and there are some good online guides (definitely familiarize yourself with the glossary on the WWII Online wiki; astounding number of acronyms in this game.)

Overall, a very frustrating game. A game like no other that seems reluctant to give players the best of itself. Still, it's gotten it's hooks into me, so maybe it will work for you as well. Just come into the experience with a lot of patience and this game might be magic for you.

Not going to touch on the horrible subscription model, others have spoken on it here.

Very addictive once you learn how to play the game. Similar to a Capture the Flag scenario, where you work as a team to capture enemy territory, and defend against attacks from land, sea and air. Different from typical (constant action) FPS games, because of the strategy to win a battle, and the skill you need to survive. I use a joystick with a twist handle (rudder control) to fly, scroll mouse and keyboard (with number-pad) to battle on the ground, but you can set your joystick with keybindings to suit your own play style. Favourite game by far!

EDIT: I'm getting off another month of premium to see if something has changed, this game was part of my childhood and I really want to see it shine, but if things are still the same or even worse well, I'll simply redo this review better and keep hammering it.

Played this 8 years ago, recently got back on it and got a month of premium on discount to finally see how it is. Original review was turning into an essay and then I discovered there's a max size of 8000 characters for the review. Oh RIP.
Basically, you got a good amount of units, tho (mostly during early campaign) it's deeply unbalanced in favor or Allies, Chars and Matildas if well-played can easily harass and dominate alone whole army bases, if not towns, with enough infantry support. That plus the fact that Axis is usually badly-commanded (too many contrary orders, or ones which are given up once everyone has setup the attack and spawn points) and seriously outnumbered 90% of the time, means that nowadays, the campaigns that lasted months, with coordinated strategic bombings, interceptor squadrons, destroyer flotillas, and huge batallion-sized attacks, are just a steamroll which decides the campaign in weeks. The Axis chat feels like a huge chat from Der Untergang, the playerbase just panics around trying to get help to defend the last bits of the town's ruins while High Command moves around imaginary armies to attack objectives in points where the supply level is usually low, or at moments when everyone else is engaged in defending that one last factory in an industrial city. Allies can even use the lowest-level tech if they want to, I recall a match before my premium ran out, basically 11 enemy tanks (Somuas, Chars and a few Renaults) were driven into the town, plus waves and waves of foot soldiers supporting. On the other side we had a few F2P people firing from windows and throwing grenades to scare off a bit the tank formations and forcing them to stop and engage us just so we could buy time.. And that's basically what Axis does in the game right now. The faction-balance system isn't enough to keep the game equal in any way.
The cost of most bundles isn't cheap (nor are they worth it IMO, such as ammo bearer or light tank ones), nor is the cost of premium, if you consider that you gotta pay it every single month, rarely getting it at discount. There's a good variety of vehicles and whattanot but well, AA guns (even 40mm Bofors) feel deeply underpowered, early-campaign German tanks only got the advantage of carrying HEAT (which is not that reliable, both accuracy and damage wise) and well, the StuG 3 which is basically the shining-star at the campaign start due to HEAT and 50mm sloped armor combo. Besides that, until Pz 4 Gs and late-war StuGs arrive, Axis are quite likely to be severely underpowered during encounters against things such as Matildas and Char B1s. In real historical conditions other factors made it easier for Germans to overcome those, in the game tho those don't apply as much.
Back to the cost aspect, being a F2Player years ago was doable and could be fun ( I had potato PC and no friends, anything was fun), tho nowadays, with the bigger diversity in the game market, you can simply move on to much more polished yet similar games which involve combined arms, and which you'll only have to pay a single time to play it forever. The subscription system for sure is what keeps many from putting their money in, prices are quite high and well, if you pay it monthly you're likely to feel forced to play to make your money worth it, not a nice feeling IMO.
Well, after 20 years the old graphics feel like the smallest of the problems of the game, sadly some of these issues are old and weren't given much if any attention at all.

TDLR; Good vehicle variety, old graphics which don't bother me but that's my opinion, map has some nice locations but 90% feels ctrl c+v, damage system is kinda confuse and sometimes feels broken, even after 20 years of the game around it's hard to find decent guides on vehicle's weakspots or gun's penetration values, the community which 8 years ago could set up HUGE field battles nowadays feels long gone to some extent, and the campaigns are always Allies-sided due to population balance issues. Some people complain about the developers in forums etc tho I never cared much about this aspect.

Don't judge this game on its graphics. It is one of the most engaging, most stimulating and most challenging to master (keeping it very interesting for years on end) in the gaming universe. Although I've played every WWII game every published, and own at least 70% of them, this classic is my favorite. I never get tired of playing it. Sometimes I'll take 5-6 month breaks because I'm playing the newest wwii game, but I always end up coming back. And I've been coming back, faithfully, for almost 20 years.

Yes it has a huge map but all the cities are about the same to each other. No one multicrews a vehicle. Not offers that much of a realistic gameplay. Modelling of the crafts are poor so does the graphics.

Very awful game both in means of gameplay and display. Waste of hours, really don't play it. Also every feauture of the game is priced so its also not a free2play game.

The 24/7 long campaigns and huge map make it a thumbs up for me. The only thing this game is lacking is players, change monthly fee plans, and faster upgrades/changes. They apparently have an extremely small crew of developers even when charging what they do through monthly subs. Still I'm paying to play for now.

The Son Of Malice
The Son Of Malice

Fun game at times, more frustrating than anything else to be honest. If you intend on playing Axis, well then you're VERY out of luck, as there is a pretty major Allied bias going on, and apparently has been going on for quite a number of years, only now it just seems like it's gotten worse.

To put things into perspective, I was on the Allied side (just to try things out), and got into a Sherman. Well, after some time, I had a Tiger Tank (which, mind you, has an 88mm) sneak up on me and get a clear flat rear shot from about roughly two car-lengths away. Not only was I not dead, my engine was still running, and all my crew were still alive. I ended up managing to get the kill on him, and after his 5TH shot into the back of my tank, only then did my engine get wiped.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the Shermans had some decent armor, but it was NEVER that good, especially not in the rear. In short, unless you plan on playing Allied, I would not recommend playing this game. The bias is far too obvious to just basically "let it be". That's just my take on it.

Foxtrot
Foxtrot

Though the graphics may not be the best at the present time it is a one of a kind game nothing quite like it. If you are going to play don't judge it on its graphics and just play for a couple of days and you will understand why WWII Online is a one of a kind game that will give you experiences that can only be found here. The game is constantly being updated to bring a better experience. Note: Voip will be added soon and the game is being modernized. Also great customer support on the discord. (also pay no mind to reviews with under 15 to 10 hours you need to play for about that time to get the true experience)

Edit WWII Online 2.0 will be coming out in the next few year in the Unreal Engine and you can support by buying premium which is now only 10$ instead of 15$ a month!

Conclusion: This is one of the best WWII games I've ever played. It has realistic gameplay, a dedicated community, and most of all, the largest videogame map ever created (It's won awards for it!). As bad as the graphics are, the game is very immersive and you often never see who hit you. The best description that I could think of is that it's Operation Flashpoint, but in WWII. Please get this game.

Of all the WWII games, this may be the most ambitious and unique. If nothing else, the sheer scale of the game world lets your imagination go wild, and more than make up for the outdated graphics and learning curve. For 20 years, this is what has kept alive the dream of a live, one-server, player-managed land/sea/air campaign.

This is something of a hobbyist's game - it is tough to learn, but rewards your patience, time, and cooperation with others. There's nothing else quite like it.

Integrated voice comms will be a massive step for WWII Online as far as retaining newcomers, and is finally coming sometime this year,

Terribly optimized game, corrupt staff members that promotes political discussion within game, many bugs and issues when you try to report a bug or give feedback it is generally days later that they reply and most of the time the reply is not very helpful or hopeful. some of the Terrain and in game models are exploitable and can only be fixed with other in game items using clever in game mechanics by players and are not always guaranteed a fixed at a later date. a lot of discussion about imbalances of load-outs, and how certain item load-outs should have come before others, this is both talked about directly in game and on the discord that they recommend you to join. Game is otherwise very in depth and includes an immersive feeling. The DLC is misleading and a large portion of the steam DLC is already free, and the monthly subscription pricing is expensive for the quality out of a modern game, in it's current state I would not call it a modern game, but a game with potential.

With graphics comparable to Runescape, and a Dev team that endorses Cheating/Hacking and allows those players to continue cheating/hacking, and ban evade to continue playing all because they have spent a lot of $$$ towards the game, The game Devs also publicly acknowledge allowing this, Connection issues and a distasteful amount of desync this game feels like it's still in Beta/Alpha. If you ask me I would never recommend this game to anyone who doesn't already play it. DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE OVERLY PRICED MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION....

*Decided to give this game a second try played it maybe for 45 minutes before I once again uninstalled it, really weird to have a developer reply who only seems focused on the cheater comment in my last post, any psychologist can see something wrong here. PREPARE TO BE OVERWHELMED WITH AUTOMATED IN-GAME MESSAGES ASKING YOU TO GO DONATE TO THERE CROWD FUNDING, THIS IS ALSO SOMETHING SPAMMED IN THERE DISCORD CHANNEL.
*They encourage steam users to make an account & pay for the game via there official website, because they know Steam makes commission off each payment when users pay via steam. I can guarantee this breaks the "Steam ULA" in some way.
(Should be noted for the record that not all developers and interns who operate this game are never paid and are required to sign an (NDA) with the company, this is just another concern for a potential law suite in the future.)
*The game has a lot to offer but, the lack of updates and new implementations too the game is slow coming.

I've played this game off an on since 2002. It can be a blast at times and I have had some lifelong friends come from this game. The game is old and still buggy and to a point it has some charm. There are attempts to modernize the game which is good to see. When will that happen, who knows.

My biggest issue and why I won't be returning to the game is there is a vocal group that get their rocks off belittling and mocking marginalized people. Its gotten to the point that it doesn't make up for the other fun moments. It can be a good game but if you come from any minority group just be aware of what you may have to deal with.
