This game is like Trine in Sci-fi mode! The gameplay is fun, the graphics is great, and music is gorgeous! I can only recommend it, epic game!
It's all very good fun! Nice bright graphics, well thought out and executed game. The only problem with it is that you really do need a controller to play it, becuase the implementation for the PC keyboard is absolutely terrible. It's doesn't really make any logical sense and changing the layout is very tedious indeed. It really does give the impression that hardly no effort went in to converting this for PC use. Shame, becuase as it is I can't recommend it unless you own a controller.
un bon petit jeu graphiquement très beau.
The cut scenes are so cheesy! Mmmm cheese.
Zack Zero is a pile of shit. If you plan to just play through it like a standard platformer (which, to be frank, it is - it's Yet Another Bland Indie Platformer With a Gimmick), don't, because the platforming is in no way good, and the aforementioned gimmick is somehow worse. Zack turns into three alternate forms! Ice, Fire, Earth. Now, IF you want to play it by "its rules", you're going to swap these constantly because higher score comes from raising "combo" by swapping damage types between each attack. The problem is that doing this will chew through your too-small energy meter, so you can basically only get off two or three before forcefully transforming back into Zack Prime or whatever the hell his base form is called.
Let me tell you why the actual mechanics are bad, though: You begin the game as a superpowered wunderkind and then at the end of the first stage, you're knocked on the head and are suddenly Level Ass, like a later Metroid game. The problem is that ZZ's stages are straight up left-to-right platforming levels, so instead of finding your powers to get cool again, you need collectables. Rareware-level collectables. Each single green dot is some XP! It's less fun than it sounds. The powers, as a result, go from having cool moves and tricks to all suddenly being one-hit-wonders (fire has a hover which you use to clear too-long gaps, ice can slow time to get under too-fast crushers, earth can't jump but HULK SMASHES open rocks beneath you and also is used every time there's a lever because you're too fucking weak to pull a lever without rocks on you?? no really).
The levels aren't fun. Period. Only fire has a reliable homing attack (which chews up energy, so you only get 2, maybe 3 off without becoming Zack again) so all the flying enemies are gonna clown on you while you try taking them out, or perhaps the platform beneath you will collapse while you try shooting down the dude who's gonna dive-bomb you mid-leap. I would legitimately argue that Super Mario Bros. (1!) has better platforming and level design than this game, if that tells you anything. Obstacles come in two varieties: "easily ignored" or "KILL AT ALL COSTS", and sometimes it's hard to tell the latter because they look like the not-entirely-3D backgrounds and will come out to wreck you. Oh, also, sometimes the platforms follow the same rule! Have fun telling which random chunk of rock in the caves is supposed to be walk-onable or will drop you to the two-second death FMV for the 500th time. (Yes there is a death cutscene. Dragon's Lair as fuck.)
Don't buy Zack Zero, it's not a good platformer, or a good score-attack game, or really "good" at all. It's complete and utter shit. If you don't have a controller (I did, for the record!) the keyboard controls are the most spiteful I've ever seen for a game that needs nothing but arrow keys, "switch forms", and action buttons.
Quite fun platformer with very decent graphic. Unlike Trine where you control in-turn 3 characters, you only control one but he can swap form when fighting enemies or maneuvering through the levels. Later you can also allocate skill points to invent your own fighting style ala Diablo 2. Not original design, of course, but it's quite well made.
Graphic is full with vibrant color and background level is detailed enough - something that must be appreciated.
But frankly I find the narration, storyline (to save this thing and that?) and voice acting a bit cheesy, but err... not a big deal. Hacking and slashing are more important.
Metacritic is definitely too off 56 for this kind of game seriously?
If you're a fan of platformer you'll definitely like the game. And it's been bundled several times so quite cheap on the market. Recommended game.
this game sucks! have a lot of laggs
I started playing this game without expecting too much: it had a somewhat troubled development and it wasn't getting great reviews. But if you withstand some of it's quirks, it's actually a very enjoyable platformer, with nice voice acting (though sparse), cool cartoon cutscenes and some really impressive levels. Oh, and the music is pretty good too.
It took me about 4 hours to finish it and I didn't find all the secrets, so it has a nice length and I didn't feel the game was padded by using the same tricks over and over. It manages to keep it fresh by using several environmental traps, cool bosses and some neat retro references here and there.
Overall, I think it has some flaws, but it's still a nice platformer on the PC (and there are not many with this style here). I hope Crocodile could make a sequel, so that they could polish some of the rough edges. If you crave for some oldschool jump-n-shootin' on your PC, this could meet your needs!
Nice platformer. Not the best ever, but for the price worth the time to play this one. The graphics are great, and the characters are interesting.
Zack Zero looks terrific and the platforming is pretty good, but combat, which you often engage in, is just weird and sloppy. The ending, too, is far too sudden and dissatisfying. I hate to give the game a thumbs down since it obviously contains the seed of something great . . . but I just can't recommend this particular product.
Decent enough concept. Zack has three different suit powers (along with the normal mode), which you have to use to platform and fight enemies. The problem is that the suit powers are barely used in-game. There's a few times when I had to switch over, but I generally saw little reason to switch from normal, especially since it can easily defeat most enemies and doesn't use energy. Combat in general is just a bore, especially when the game makes you fight mini-bosses multiple times with no changes. There is some decent platforming in here, and a few moments where I found myself having fun with that, but overall, this is just mediocre.
Too many bugs. Bad controls...
Good little side-scroller. Interesting suit mechanics keep the game fresh, and the art style is really enjoyable to take in while playing.
Nice game. Visually pleasing for sure. Played it on the PC. Loved it. Alittle buggy, but I can deal.
If you make it for the Mac I'll buy again. Love the rich colors bro.
A generic/outdated plataformer.
Reminds me of a child's cartoon.
The narration/storytelling is quite weak.
The controls are quite unpolished.
I can't understand how I never heard about Zack Zero. It plays great and looks awesome.. The controls are very fluid. Creative in its design and execution. Superficially very Trine-like but isn't so physics oriented. Lots of fun if you like cool platformers.
This game is well worth regular price, but you'll feel guilty getting it on sale for only $.99!
Do it!
I bought this game while it was on 90% discount sale. A really good 99 cents investment. Zack Zero is an excellent platformer with graphics color palette similar to sudeki with character movement similar to earthworm jim. The game has some decent cutscenes although the voice-over isnt as good as i would have appreciated; however not bad.
+Good Graphics for a 820MB game
+Fluid gameplay, no lag, no jitters unless youre in contact with enemies
+Earth, Fire and ice power morphs for gameplay variety
+Hidden locations with hidden items for a slight challenge giving it a slight puzzle game feeling
+Cutscenes with voice-over/narration
+Automatic checkpoint saves so no issues if your character falls off the platform/dies or you quit abruptly
+Fictional Alien planet exploration
+No game-bugs experienced in my time spent playing this game on my system which isnt really "latest"
-Voice-over sub-par
-Linear Storyline and slightly cliched
-The hidden levels and puzzle attempts are rather simple. Slightly more complicated situations would have been nice.
-Powers recharge very quickly so theres less strategizing on budgeting power usage. Its more about using variety of powers to get a better score
The cons mentioned arent really cons in my opinion. Ive just laid them out for those expecting those aspects. This review is strictly my opinion. I will definitely recommend this game especially when on sale. It has a very nostalgic feel to it and is a lot of fun.
Paid 99 cents for it and feel it was 98 cents too expensive. Awful level design where some platforms are platforms and others just part of the background. Lots of cheap deaths from falling down holes that don't look like holes. It has a very hard time being stable, crashes every twenty minutes. Piss poor hit detection. Controls that don't always trigger. It's an interesting concept, art style and everything...it just wasn't executed properly. Feels like a bad PS1/N64 title with higher resolution.
Finnished game with 15/15 achievements and I`m sorry but can`t really recommend. There are too many bugs atm and steam overlay causes graphic glitches (ati cards). Leveling system and abilities are weak and pointless (99% of the time used basic attack oneshoting almost everything). Story and enemies are really childish (guess I`m too old for this game) :)
Cons:
- bugs
- leveling system
- story
- bugs again
Pros:
- graphics
I would compare it to the games that can be found in boxes of cereal :)
If you are max 10 years old and don`t mind occasionals bugs and willing to play with steam overlay turned off then you may like this game.
I didn't experienced any issues with the graphics, controlls, and so on,but the game itself is boring, you got 3 suits, with different combat skills, but that doesn't make it any better..
This game, not being ver graphic intense, as most can see. Does not even work on my computer, which is a quite a beast. None on the model are rendered and most of the game is black. Have tried all i can think to fix. Sad. Looked like a good game too....
Zack Zero, Bugged Hero
The game looks awesome, especially for an indie title...but the basic gameplay and storyline are actually pretty bland. The worst part of the game though is that there are a lot of glitches and bugs...you can find yourself saved to an unwinnable save point, stuck in the back / foreground, or just have the textures go haywire on you. If you find it on a BIG sale (I picked it up 90% off), it may be worth your time...otherwise give Zack zero thought.
How should i put it? this game actually pretty solid. Feels like when you played some retro console "fun get-go not likely frustrating hard" platform game with decent puzzle, pretty challenging levels, good graphics and gameplay. I recommend using gamepad to play this game, i used keyboard my self (and often pressing wrong key).
The only minus factor in this game are...
BUUUUUUUUUGS!!
If only developer squashed all it's bugs. Come on guys this game should be FUN right! Oh and don't forget those steam cards and achievement.
7/10 Looking forward for the sequel (if any)
This was one of the funnest games I have every played. I have always been a fan of side scrollers but this is so much more. Loved it, and I got if for a buck! Best buck I ever spent.
Great game, highly recommended!
oh man, one of the worst sidescrolling games i've played..only buy it if its 2$ or less
there's so much bug and glitches, while walking you'll suddenly fall off a cliff or get stuck inside a wall or a boulder, happened to me like 5x and that's just the 1st stage which is very short.. imagine the longer stages
the game does not offer invincibility when knocked down by enemy and you cannot regain or recover from knockdown while on air or on the ground, in short an enemy can keep on hitting you while you're knockdown or keep on using the same skill that sends you high up the ground in a knockdown state until you're dead..
gets too repetitive im only on the 2nd stage and im bored already.. waste..much like crash bandicoot only worse
Just a short review as a warning: stay clear from this one! Not for the gameplay - it actually looks good and plays great - but for the technical shortcomings, which are all too plenty. Just check the discussions going on: loads of people are having trouble with this game. Many of them can't get it started, or need quite some complicated action to get it running. This is technically not a finished product - anyway not on Steam, right now. Maybe "early access", and even then. Is Valve getting overwhelmed a bit by the plethora of new idie-games coming out so that they can't keep up to their usual high technical standards? Let's hope not....
As for me: this game managed to crash to a blue screen of death and a hard reboot three times in a row, after which I gave up on it. And yes, I do have a very stable system with crashes almost non-existent, certainly no hard reboots.
So unfortunately, I cannot really speak of the gameplay. For the 20 minutes of so I managed to be in-game, it looked pretty funny, with lots of action, good graphics, and quite some humour. Alas, technical issues ruined this one for me.
Overall rating: 2/10 (possible 7/10 or higher if the technicall issues were not there).
Sad, really.
Seems a little weird on the controls at first, you warm up to em quick though. Love the cutscenes... gameplay is fairly straightforward. Reminds me of old snes platformers. Enjoying it so far.
i dont know the game looks nice and interesting but it when i found out the pilot its very genric save the girl blah bah blah and it just wasnt fun for me
Just a dull game to me.. 3 different suit forms that offer 2-3 abilities each and just point blank smack things and youre done. 4/10 only buy on sale. I got it for 1 dollar.
The game is fun. Full of glitches but nothing game breaking. I like the level up system and it was very fun. If your looking for some deep story it won't be here but the game play is fun and it has some replay value. not much. I got it when it was on sale for .99USD so it was well worth it for me.
I played this game for 11 minutes before my fire attack turned into giant glitchy glass cubes, then I got stuck in a wall. It was then uninstalled and never played again. Quality experience 10/10
i really like this game. If your into side scrolling platformers, this is a good choice. I wish there were more games coming out like this.
It's a nice game to get for 0.99$ and it's casual and short. Sure why not.
If you're looking for a AAA storyline and impressive cinematic quality cut scenes, or even decent humor, forget about it. However, as craptacular as the narration, which comes off more like story time in the kids section of the book store, it starts to fall in to that "so bad it's good" category. The plot is flimsier than dollar store toiler paper, but that's what makes it funny. It feels like it was written by a grade schooler, and the character designs reflect a lot of those same sensibilities.
The gameplay is your typical run and gun platformer ala Megaman X8/9. I use that example specifically because the different powers enable you to reach certain areas, depending on what you're trying to achieve.
The models and environments are fairly well detailed, so I think I would've liked to have seen more in-engine cutscenes as opposed to the concept storyboards and would've liked to have had a voice attached to the comm notifications.
All that said, I paid a buck for this and got a lot more than that in value. Zack Zero shows a lot of promise, but go in it for the old school run and jump gamplay of the nintendo era, and try to not cringe too much at the storyline or the narrator's booming voice.
Other games like this would be Rochard and Shank.
Good game, good idea behind it.
A bit too much spam by Crocodile Entertainment in game, if you pay for a game and you see some marketing in an intro thats fine but this one spams you trough the entire game.
At this point you might think, why would you not recommand it if its mostly good, well this is why:
The game got horrible gameplay, as in second worst I ever seen.
The gameplay is everything but smooth, it feels like playing an emulated game within an emulator within another emulator which is hosted on a virtual server with too less resources and you're accessing it trough and rdp session within an rdp session within an rdp session.
Idea for the game: 8.5/10
Graphics: 6.5/10
Gameplay: 2/10
Implementation and excecution: 3/10
overall feel, 4/10
This game feels a bit like a puzzle-platformer because the player must choose the correct element in order to proceed past certain obstacles. The combat is pretty simple and enemies can be disposed of very easily. The learning curve is mellow and the overall difficulty seems pretty easy. I haven't played for more than a couple hours so the late game could change quite a bit. The pace of this game was just a bit too slow for my personal preference.
Zack Zero is a game for an obvious young child target audience, although some of the content is questionable, the story is narrated and designed for children roughly under the age of 10. The visuals are quite good and the characters designs as well are something out of a saturday morning cartoon. The game's platforming isn't bad with the multiple forms you can transform into offering a variety of ways to progress (some forced), and although easy, it keeps in mind its target audience. The combat is also easy, and can be summarized by pressing attack and letting the lock on do its work, it takes essentially no skill but does allow the game to be accessible again to the very young demographic. Dying also seems to be of minimal penalty, further lending to the genre, which is made to be accessible. The drawbacks to this game are twofold, the first are that there are some technical issues and even I got frames per second drops occasionally without any apparent cause and the second is that if you are outside of this game's target demographic you likely will not enjoy the experience. That being said, if you are looking for a platformer for your child under 10, this game is a decent choice.
a platform game without gamepad support. No thanks.
Great 2.5d action platformer, not the best story but the gameplay is solid. 7.5/10
- TAKE IT
I didn't expected too much from this game when i got it, but since it is/was at a very cheap price I got it, and I don't regret it! It's just AMAZING, it's funny, there is action, lovely enemies (if you like crocodiles) a fabolous environment and you can controll the elements! each one have it's own features and by using your mind (and the suggestion that your partner give to you time to time) you lear how to use them to go on. It made my mood raise up, I warmly suggest to buy it!!!!
-Game broken for ati videocards and got glitches.
-Game looks nice and got nice video just gameplay not that super.
-Shows keys for a console when i use pc.
I see it as this it's a chaep game for a good amount of gameplay , if you love your platform game's this is for you , though their are some hiccups here & their , but nothing to wurry about & not game brakeing , it's got good banter , good action , some laugh's here & thier but other then that its H3LL OF ALOT OF FUN , & if your good at scoreing big points you can brag about it to your friends on the leaderboard.....
This Game is the BOOOOMB!!!! its goofy....relaxing and takes you back to saturday morning cartoons. they say the controls are hard ...but I just cant see it. Love the game. One of my all time favorites!!!!!
graphic issues spoiled an otherwise fun game
Zack Zero starts slow, but ultimately picks up into being a fun little romp. While a little awkward at times, it's a fun thing to entertain yourself with. If 9 euros is too much, it's certainly worth getting during a sale, if you're willing to endure the very slow, annoying start.
Just remember that the first few levels will make you feel like it never picks up, and then it picks up and becomes a charming little indie title that could certainly use a sequel. In fact, I'd be sad if I'd never see ZZ again in a more refined form.
After all, most problems could be fixed with a few tweaks and some slight changes as well as a more intelligent design in the earlier levels. It's odd to see a game start bad and then become good, it's usually the other way around.
Honestly, my experience is a solid 7/10 overall!
I'd say this action platformer is good as the game for children. The rest may skip it without any regrets as it offers nothing of interest for an experienced gamer and a grown-up person.
About 60 minutes fun, then everytime the same mechanics and endless stupid bossfights...
If you are up for a fun game without a lot of keys to remember, this may be a game for you, if you have a child that you want to monitor with the kinds of games there playing I can also see this being a game you would want to look in to the action is fast, graphics are not bad and you don’t need a high end system to play it, I my self-played it on a pc with cup that is a a6 3670 2.7GH 22GB of Ram and a AMD r9 card. From 1 to 10 Ill give this game a 8.5. This game is not crisis, call of duty or a aliens game so don’t compare it to such
A beautiful game and great story, however the controls have a bit of laggy response at time when things get really active on screen. Also clipping issues. The holy hell of all clipping issues that games has.
Highly underrated game.
Good replay value.
No bugs or glitches.
Good graphics and soundtrack.
Bug every where,..
So sad :
2/10(
What would otherwise be a mediocre platformer is completely unplayable due to a common bug that crashes the game at the end of the first level. There are several potential workarounds but they don't work for everybody, and I'm one of the unlucky ones. Many people can't get the game to launch at all.
I love 2.5D sidescrolling games... This one not so much. I don't like the gameplay. And graphics are not very nice. Get Trine instead...
7/10.
Actually a fun platformer with a story (speech, some videos). Nice graphics, sometimes you can move in 2.5D... some nice mini and levelbosses... secrets to discover, achievements... also the duration to complete was decent. Importantly, the autosave feature is very fair... all gems you get before dying are saved, you just need to replay a small area...
Recommended for the price.
The loading screen and the related graphics are pretty much dull and out of resolution. Game is fairy okay, nothing amazing about it. Enjoyable, but not challenging enough.
I bought this for a dollar on a sale. I can safely say I would never pay more than that. It was a struggle, a test of my patience to see how fast I could speedrun this game, and I almost feel a little cheated. For a dollar!
I will say this up front: the game tried, but not nearly hard enough. Hit detection is awful, the controls are inconsistent (sometimes I can double jump, sometimes not, sometimes I can grab ledges, not always), the recycled enemies are absolutely dull, the level design is pointless ( "puzzles" consisted of moving obvious blocks onto obvious platforms), the story is absolutely atrocious and uninspired, the psuedo-3d gimmick (you and enemies could move into the foreground and background) worked against me half the time as I couldn't hit enemies who were hitting me, the dialogue is straight out of an underfunded kid's animation movie, not to mention the "cinematic" and dull soundtrack... ugh.
I'd give it flak for the infinite lives, but that's the only thing that kept me going to completion, and what with the awful hit detection and controls it's a blessing. It was never particularly hard, but there were very few deaths where I feel I screwed up and wasn't just cheated by the game.
There were a few things that went well, however. The level design, however plain, did only leave me at a confused halt twice, one of them was because the game bugged and I couldn't progress in the lava area. The abilities did feel satisfying enough to use, watching enemies or the environment either freeze or explode. That's... about it.
Oh, and minor spoiler here, but the ending leaves off in a CLIFFHANGER. They were confident enough in this game to leave space for a direct sequel. Good lord.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the game stuttered in many places and had low framerate issues regularly for seemingly no reason, not like this is a graphically intense game.
It is a pretty good game. I do get some stuttering issues on it with a r9 280 and amd 6350. I know I have 2.5 hrs of playtime at the time of this review, but I do like it. If you grew up in the 80's or 90's you'll probably appreciate it. Graphics aren't bad and the gameplay is decent. one of the many games I need to get around to finishing.
Simplistic linear game with nothing new to offer in either visuals, mechanics or challenge. Also there is a bug that affects the graphics when using certain powers. There are simply so many better games out there to play instead of this one.
Simple console-port, that works, but nothing more. No really big problems, but has some annoying aspects. There are plenty of better platformers.
The game is unplayable.
When I beat the 1st level, it crashed.
Then I managed to beat the 2nd level and it crashed again.
This time around, I couldn't go any further because the game crashed every time I beat the level.
I will NEVER buy a game from the developer again.
This game is a piece of shit. Why did I buy it? Better question - why did I beat it? Answer: I was really, REALLY bored. Pass on this one unless the price drops below $1.00
Zack Zero is a great game, enjoyful and good times. I have great time with my family while playing this game on the computer but also on the TV. I'm looking forward to play it again due that I'm becoming a streamer and will stream great games like Zack Zero. Great playable, great graphics and sound. Highly recommend it.
Actually, this is a decent little side scrolling platformer.
You play Zack who has some powers that can be used in certain areas of the game (mainly rock to knock down barriers and ice to slow down time) and to attack enemies.
Run, jump, shoot and punch then get to the end of the stage and fight a boss.
Nothing too taxing here, the checkpoints are nicely spaced so if you die, you never have much to do again, which I appreciated being a bit crap at games.
Maybe aimed more at kids, but I had a good time playing, but I am wondering if the promised sequel will ever show up.
Was actually excited to play this but I have a bug where regular game sounds die after 30 seconds of play, all that's left is ambient noise and music.
This game looks fun but... That is where the fun ends. The game is loaded with bugs and plagued by clunky counterintuitive gameplay machanics. I wise I could recommend this game however, it is meh at best and a classic wtf at worst.
I beat this game but it just was not fun. There was no challenge with the puzzles and the beat-em-up sections were not enjoyable.
This game is a smacking drop of fluid in a sacrificed raging lions behind lowering a skull inside it
A fun adventure platformer, it is on the simple side but it was fun. Controls on KB are wonkey so play with controller. That too wish it would have opted to have D-pad control for movement but all in all was fun.
Very fun. I like the powers. The graphics are great.
