Goofy Chilean made first person brawler that has always had a warm place in my heart. The relatively low budget is obvious through the short length and reuse of certain content, but the assets that are there are filled with a ton of creative energy. The world of Zeno Clash takes inspirations from many sources of art spanning centuries and is a mix that you've definitely not seen in a game. And despite the light jankiness of some mechanics, the game itself is actually good beyond its excellent art. Any shallowness in that respect is undercut by the short length and brisk pace of the game not letting anything linger for too long. And of course, charging a powerful uppercut and unleashing it to knock a naked man with an eyeball helmet 10 feet back feels great.

Weird in all the best ways

story is pretty short (took me about two to two and a half hours) but if you care about the challenge mode and achievements you'll squeeze out a good amount of playtime

It's crazy and sentimental enough for me to love it. The game teaches how hard is it to be a single father-mother and keep your family together.

This game is set in a intresting fantasy world, with a weird/unusual art style, when everything feels alive and organic.
the plot is about the Main Character's action of killing an being called "Father Mother", the one who cares for the people in a town, after that, he escapes and it's up to the player to discover the reasons why.

The combat is the big highlight of the game, mostly focused on hand-to-hand combat, with some firearms with an intresting design, it isn't too deep, but it can be challenging when many enemies face you at once.

Your arsenal may consist of bashing weapons, useful for taking out the big bad guys, and can easily dispatch the normal ones, sending 'em flying high into the air, it also has a one-shot grenade launcher, that does as the name emplies, double pistols, useful for doing passive damage to enemies trying to get close and personal, a rifle, that does good damage and is more accurate, useful for taking out enemies that are also wielding guns, and a double-crossbow, that fires two craniums that do decent damage but are projectile based, you also have skull grenades that do exactly what a grenade does.

I bought this game out of curiosity, and I personally enjoyed it, the history is kinda meh, and I didn't take it very seriously, the combat is fun, the characters are weirdly hilarious and the setting is pretty intresting, with varying situations and ways of applying your skills with your fists, or your firearms.

I give this game a fair 7/10, it's just a bit too short, there is a challenge mode but it didn't peak my intrest all that much.

I'll make it short:
The Good: The music, the art direction, concept.
The Bad: Short, controls are quite unresponsive and thus frustrating.

Played this based on a recommendation and this game doesn’t feel dated at all. The combat mechanics feel really good, there is a real oomph to them when you land your hits. The story isn’t too long but there is a nice variety in a lot of the different encounters and scenarios you come across. Art design is really interesting and the environments themselves are actually quite nice. I highly recommend this, especially on sale. I am working my way through the Challenge towers now which also some nice additional game play outside the campaign. I can definitely see myself reinstalling this later down the line just to enjoy it all over again.

Cons: It's short, it's REALLY weird, and the plot is barely there.
Pros: It's short, it's REALLY, REALLY weird, and its world is incredibly memorable. Most importantly, fighting is fluid, dynamic and fun. Best fantasy bird punching simulator on the market, 10/10 scull bombs.

This is "A wtf I am looking at??" game, a melee/FPS game that received a 2009 game award and got lost into the oubliettes of time like many others. I noticed a clear inspiration from Antoni Gaudi for the architecture and maybe Dali for the whole dreamy atmosphere. There's nothing really challenging as you can easily exploit the ennemy AI but I still died like 3-4 times before completing the game that last 3.5 hours. There is also a Tower mode with 5 levels to beat I will not try to beat that mode because even if the coombat mechanics are coherent with no major flaws they still feel a bit stiff and only play with 4 shooting weapons 4 melees weapons and 5 hands to hands combat tricks, it's nothing super excithing but it does the job. The game is really interesting for its art's inspiration and bizarre story, if you want to evade for a few hours with a bit of nostalgia from older games it's great. After reading the end game credits I understand that this game was lead by a familly of spanish or south american people as 4 of them have the same last name, Carlos, Juan, Edmundo y Andres all belong to the Bordeu familly. I enjoyed this game and I am pretty sure that I will continue the story and play Zeno Clash 2 another time when I'll feel that I really want to play something unusual far the hypes and modern gaming dogmas.

I have been a surreal game kick and this made me circle back to this game in my library. The art and feel of this game is weird but very cool at the same time. I like the first person brawler feel to it and the uniqueness to each weapon you come across. This is one that it would be cool to see a remaster done on it. As far as a basic moves its pretty basic but its a lot of fun to watch your opponents fly across the screen. Besides a few hiccups this game runs fine in windows 10. It is a short game but even at 10 its worth the experience.

Zeno clash is a fever dream, a bad trip, a good trip, while on shrooms, all rolled into a game. Somehow though, its not half bad.

Describing anything other then the combat is nearly impossible, so lets just say the story is ok for the theme of the game... Which is of course f$%@ing weird.

The combat is actually decently solid, and every level focuses on something different. The first level is all about teaching you the basics of melee combat and using weapons and throwables against enemies. Another level focuses entirely on guns, another throwables, another on melee, another on gathering information, and another on just plain movement. Considering how short the game is this was actually a really good way of keeping the game somewhat fresh throughout its 2.5-3 hour story.

If you go into this with a VERY open mind, its actually a fun game but i wouldn't say its a must have or even a must play. $10 is VERY steep for a one off 3 hour game that to be honest, i forgot even existed until i found it randomly in my library. I do remember buying it for something like $1 or maybe even lower, keep in eye out for a sale if your that interested.

There is an intrinsic value to weirdness. The bravery to upset established conventions in order to create individuality, even in the face of alienation, is to be celebrated.

This game was a huge gamble, in visuals, in storytelling, in gameplay. A gamble that shows what people who make games because they love them can do incredible things. And I'm very glad it panned out.

Should you play it? Damn straight. Despite its age, there's still nothing quite like it. Great fun, great pace. Maybe a bit too short? I love short games, so I don't really mind. And dirt cheap. Really no reason not to play it at this point.

Bit short - but doesn't feel short.

This is an old game, but is still very playable today.

Strange characters and story-line, but you kind of want to see what weird thing you'll see around the corner!

This game is awesome, the gameplay is a little janky but really fun once you get the hang of it. The story is somewhat short, it took me like 4 hours to beat it. There is, however, a challenge mode to keep you interested afterwards. If you like martial arts or surreal artwork I recommend getting this %100.

We reviewed this game on our podcast: Garbage Game Night, where we try out poorly reviewed or bargain games and give them a second chance, either trying to find something the critics missed or enjoy them because they are so bad…

Zeno Clash does something video games ought to do more, be weird. When video games could give you any experience, they often give you reality or WW2. Zeno Clash is something different entirely. There is a whole world of lore lurking behind the plot, the creatures are unsettling and the surrealism keeps you guessing. On top of that, the combat is actually enjoyable. There's probably not enough depth to the gameplay to keep it going any longer than the campaign, but we found the balance to be right. Clocking in at about 3hr for the campaign (plus a challenge mode, if you want), $10 is a healthy price point for this game.
This game wasn't particularly poorly received (as most of the games we do are), but it flew pretty low under the radar and is often available for a buck or two. The world of Zenozoik is something you should absolutely check out if your a fan of the strange and unsettling in video games. It received some of our highest scores we've ever given in our podcast, ranging from 7.5 to 9.
If you're interested in an in-depth look into the background of the game and our reactions to our first playthrough, you can check out our podcast on Zeno Clash

Extremely fun fighting game with shooting sections and guns included for more fun. The story mode is short but I would still recommend it it was a blast from front to back so you can't go wrong really. It doesn't take itself too seriously either with ridiculous enemy designs that made me laugh a few times. Whether it was intentionally looking goofy or not I can't tell but I would say it's meant to be that way.

Thematically and aestetically, this game is a bad drug trip. The gameplay isn't much better. Turns out mêlée combat in first person is a royal pain, and this game makes it even worse by making it just about impossible to judge how far you are from your enemies. This game is just a miserable, repetitive slog, and I cannot recommend it unless you feel you deserve to suffer.

Stunning visuals, and amazing story. im loving every second of this game. running on source engine this looks beautiful, the enviorments are so full of things to look at and explore. satisfying combat, good humor and very creative ideas here. a total sleeper hit. PLAY THIS! my only gripe would be the weapons, they feel like capguns. but seeing how this is a first person brawler, weapons should be downplayed as possible, so i guess it passes. 10/10

What a great experience. I wish more fictional media would be daring enough to try crazy stories like this. The world and character designs are wonderfully inspired, and every new creature you see is a joy to witness.

The gameplay is VERY rough, with tons of low budget Source engine jank, but its satisfying enough to be playable. Sending enemies flying with punches and kicks is a great bonus.

It's a great game that doesn't overstay its welcome, at only 4 hours. Any longer than that and I feel like the stiff gameplay would have started to get annoying.

A couple annoyances:

    • Default FOV is too narrow, and changing it breaks the hud and removes the aiming reticle.
    • Guns overall are pretty useless since they can be knocked out of your hands so easily.
    • Some graphical bugs, like shadows glitching out and occasionally breaking animations.

An interesting First Person Fighting game that has a cool world and really interesting designs.
The Fighting mechanics are fun, but a bit exploitive. I feel the game starts to loose it's steam 75% in, and recycles for the final levels. Overall, neat game.

While I wasn't too pleased with the abrupt ending, I must say that everything leading up to it was incredibly fascinating and weird.

Gameplay was definitely also cool. I'm always up for fist-fighting oriented combat, and this game handles it really well despite a lil' jank. The guns don't function differently from what we already know, but they are definitely presented as such.

Very solid experience! A one-of-a-kind in more ways than one.

5 / 10. Infamous indeed.

At the time it came out, Zeno Clash was deemed rather infamous. The main points that it was known were: first person fighting, a bizarre setting, clunky combat and a slew of bugs. Knowing what I would get into, I picked this up at a sale. I can say that I wasn't disappointed.

Yes, Zeno Clash is typically a first person fighting game but fighting mingles with shooting in a lot of instances. The fighting itself, the main selling point, is... well... not that great. It feels clunky and unresponsive for the most time. Blocking and counter-attacking is rarely functional. You may have good hand-to-eye-coordination, but pressing the button at the right time doesn't mean that you'll do the action. This by itself is a big deal, as you'll quickly learn that backtracking in circles is a way better strategy than actually blocking and counter-attacking.

Difficulty is pretty cranked up. Even if you set it to low, it randomly jumps back. The enemies are pretty tough, your attacks seem under-powered. Your opponents have combos, feign attacks, blocks, dodges... they even dodge your counter-attacks. At this time, you only have some basic hitting motions and are constantly at a disadvantage: 1vs3, 1vs5 and so on. What's worse, you fight the same enemies over and over, Streets of Rage style.

The story is weird and serves only as transition between areas. There's no sense of exploration, no sense progression and, in a nutshell, it doesn't serve any purpose.

Game is buggy, forcibly restricted in many ways (like save locations), deliberately made hard, etc. What I'm trying to say is that at some point you'll pretty much get frustrated by some of it's bad designs.

Do I recommend this game? No, not unless you like random weirdness, and even then with a grain of salt.

What a game!
I just finished it and all I can think of is that those 2 GB needed to install the sequel aren't downloading fast enough. What. A. Game.
There's so much to unfold... you could argue that Source engine is well dated and it's true only if we're talking about realistic graphics. This game does gets away with so many things just because its based in a completely alien world with with barely no points of reference in terms of where and when, not to mention that everything except of basic items and structures looks weird, to say the least. I don't remember the last time when I've seen graphic design so unique.. The only thing that comes to my mind is if you'd crossed Oddworld style with the old game's Sacrifice design. I cannot streatch this enough - this games unique style is already worth the money you'd pay for it. It... is... so... freaking... WEIRD! I love it. And then there's this crazy, mad, bonkers, sometimes senseless story...
From the start the game throws you in the middle of a tale that you know nothing of and takes almost no time explaining things it introduces. Zeno Clash is strange and some would say that in certain places it uses very poor plot devices, but only if they forget that this is a completely alien world with it's own rules and it doesn't need to always make sense to us. The whole thing unfolds in a way a fairy tale unfolds - everything in there serves its purpose to tell a good story in a way that is entertaining. Those who don't like that simplicity should just take a look around the game's environment and tell me that ain't a whole story of it's own. That, for most of players, will be either a thing to get sucked in completely or disorient and get put off; but even if the latter happens... there's the gameplay. And the creators knew it and that's why they throw you in the middle of things straight away. The core gameplay mechanics hit literally hit you from the first seconds after the intro.
You can say much about clunky looks of most of first-person melee brawlers but this one goes to far extend to make itself look smooth and realistic and interestingly enough, even though you are capable of all the moves from get-go, it teaches you to use them only over the course of time, which creates an interesting difficulty curve. Blocks make sense, and if done well are especially spectacular, there's a good amount of combos and, oh, did I forget that there are also guns and melee weapons? All of them looking as weird as you'd expect and they're made in a way that seems good with the general balance of the game. I could argue that the focus mode is sometimes more disorienting than helpful and AI does some weird stuff sometimes (generally being good most of the times, trying to surround you and avoiding your aim if possible) but that usually slides aside in face of brilliant gameplay. I played on the hardest difficulty so I can only imagine how dominant one can get in a fight with lower level AI.
The stages in between proper melee battles are usually weaved with very generic arcade shooter tunnel-like stages that to some might feel boring, empty and repetitive but they're usually doing good job at building the atmosphere and are never particularly long.
The only thing that I actually disliked in this game is the music. It sounds like generic full-MIDI video game music without soul and in my opinion doesn't usually resonate with the atmosphere of the game. I'd expect something more tribal and organic, but that's just my snobby taste. I don't mind full-MIDI music done right, but this feels a bit too out of place, in comparison to Age Of Empires, for example. Still, it's my taste, I guess.
All in all I knew I had to play this game since it's announcement long ago. Finally I had a chance and I did not get disappointed. Sure, it has it's flaws, but also offers so much of pure fun from gameplay and its environment that I cannot recommend it enough.
And then there's the ending, to which I arrived in such a red mist of battle that I was genuinely surprised to reach it. It left me in a state of bloodlust, so to calm down I wrote this review while I wait for Zeno Clash 2 to download. xD

+ smooth combat system (for 13 year old a Source game anyway)
+ mad world, weapon and character design
+ intriguing story
+ simple yet satisfying gameplay

- storytelling my come across as cheap at times
- focus mode sometimes more disorienting than helpful
- empty, generic and mismatched MIDI music
- sometimes monotonous

Granted this is an older game.
The combat is up close and personal. The story is a bit weird off the start, but I could kinda follow it easily. The combat, which is what the game is based around, is in first person and there are a few combo style moves you can do. It is easy to exploit and just spam normal and power attacks. What I dislike is really the combat. It feels clunky and unpolished. The art style is pretty cool though, and the story actually makes me want to see the end.

Yzil

The voice acting isn't good. Regardless of acting some of the voices are bad or even just unintelligible. The combat didn't feel good either which is kind of the core of the game. Why would I recommend? The setting alone is worth experiencing. What a wonderfully weird world that I want to explore more of. It's only 3-4 hours long so easily completed in a single night.

The levels are at least kept interesting, in terms of gameplay, despite the combat not clicking with me. It's not particularly hard just a bit awkward and the inclusion of weapons (though I loved the designs) seemed to go against the spirit of it.

Zeno Clash is a first person beat em up and holy shit did they nail it.

GAMEPLAY - You really feel like you are there, that YOU are Ghat. The first person camera feels cinematic, and combined with the many animations of different combos you can pull off, you just feel like a badass. Only thing I really really hated, was the lock on mechanic. In theory locking onto an enemy makes it easier to hit them, right? Well, whenever you lock onto someone your pov zooms in and you are not allowed to engage anyone else. Bad thing is you are 100 percent of the time engaged by more than one person, other from the actual tutorial that taught you the mechanic. Whenever you try to disengage with e again you swap to the next person and shit can get confusing and in most cases can end up killing you.

GRAPHICS - The graphics are a little outdated in some areas but what can you expect from a game made in 2009. That aside I do have to say the wet surfaces really shine and combined with a Dark Crystal sorta vibe I found myself staring at different areas in awe.

STORY - The atmosphere and the world of Zeno Clash is creepy as hell. But you are quickly immersed into the mystery of why Ghat was exiled and now on the run. The story is very short compared to all the other source games out there and I was able to complete it in about 4 hours. Still I came out wanting to know more about the universe and the denizens surrounding it.

EXTRAS - If the campaign didnt soothe your fighting needs, then you can check out the tower arena. levels 1-5 tests your mettle against all of the badies you have encountered cranked up a notch. While levels -1 - -3 has you descend through floors with parkour along with breaking the ground with grenades. I found that one A LOT more harder but a lot more funner too.

PERFORMANCE - You can practically play this game on anything, however I experienced some jitters NOT WITH THE FRAMERATE but the mouse movement. It was subtle and didnt ruin the gameplay and appeared randomly but I completely forgot about it until writing this so chances are you will too.

This was pretty fucking solid.

Unlike most other games. The first-person brawling is satisfying, and the weapons are fun and unique. Simply amazing, in fact, one of my favorite games! I had played this years ago on Xbox, but once I got Zeno Clash 2 from a friend, and saw that it was on sale, I knew I couldn't pass up the chance to buy one of my favorite games.

The lore is something I find kinda fascinating. From the bizarre creature known as Fathermother, to the mysterious Ghat, the story always has something new and bizarre to look forward to!

Not only that, the gameplay is something very unique! This isn't the first game to utilize beat em up mechanics in first person, but the way it's handled is pretty interesting. A lot better than the sequel I can tell you that!

All in all, do yourself a favor, and buy this game. It's weird, it's stange, and it's often times creepy, but it's truly an experience to behold.

They took too many liberties with how they decided to rewrote some sentences and the words they picked in some cases simply feels obsolete or even out of place, it's like they thought "Nah, this english phrase is too simple, let's add double the worlds certainly this won't distort or denaturalise in any way the original meaning and every dialogue will sound absolutely natural".

PS: you can't change the language from the game menus, the default is set to your system language and I didn't want to do some extra steps to change it.

Amazing game, a brilliant unconventionally structured narrative about the nature of family and identity. One of the best looking games ever made purely by the merit of its art direction, inspired by expressionist and surrealist paintings, it creates a world as confusing as it is beautiful.
The combat is also surprisingly good, barebones but tight and responsive enough to feel like you could master it with practice. If you get dizzy from first person games tho dont play this

1 large egg
225g plain flour
½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
¼ tsp salt
200g plain chocolate chips or chunks

STEP 1
Heat the oven to 190C/fan170C/gas 5 and line two baking sheets with non-stick baking paper.

STEP 2
Put 150g softened salted butter, 80g light brown muscovado sugar and 80g granulated sugar into a bowl and beat until creamy.

STEP 3
Beat in 2 tsp vanilla extract and 1 large egg.

STEP 6
Use a teaspoon to make small scoops of the mixture, spacing them well apart on the baking trays. This mixture should make about 30 cookies.

Bake for 8–10 mins until they are light brown on the edges and still slightly soft in the centre if you press them.

STEP 8
Leave on the tray for a couple of mins to set and then lift onto a cooling rack.

RECIPE TIPS
FREEZING THE BISCUITS
If you’ve frozen the biscuits, take them out and arrange them on a lined baking sheet. Once defrosted, pop them in a medium oven 190C/170 fan/gas mark 5 and heat for 2-3 mins to crisp up. Don’t leave them too long or they’ll dry out.
STORING DOUGH
You can keep the uncooked dough in a sealed container in the fridge for up to two weeks. Simply take some out, dollop on a lined baking tray and allow to come up to room temperature for 5 mins before baking

gameplay is a bit janky, i played better first person melee games. however this is an older game, so that's ok. runs smooth, no need to tweak stuff around like some other older titles, so that's good too. art design is cool, i guess this is what being on drugs would feel ilke.

Anti-Russian company that doesn't mind selling to evil countries like Israel and the US, despite their constant child murder and genocide.

It also has terrible controls and a piss-poor save system. It's also piss-easy.

I don't understand why trash games have garbage achievements that point out how bad the game is to play. It's as indie as it gets but in a bad way.

Cool little game made on the Source engine, strange and bizarre art style and characters. Story is also very odd. Game play is linear FPS beat 'em up and some shooting. Recommended if you want something quick and unusual.

I don't know what's going on, there's a bird that's a lady and it's also my father, and my mother. But everyone wants to fight me and no one is wearing clothes. Fighting is good, and why not? What else is there to do in this life but fight? Anyway you can do stuff if you want and even kill some guys until the get back up and fight you some more. Best disney movie by far

While its uniqueness is admirable, just because its unique does not mean its good. The art style, while very creative, lacks coherency and frequently feels taken from someones Tumblr portfolio. The music and voice acting are all incredibly amateur, the structure repetitive, and the writing subpar. The brawling is alright at times but the hitboxes frequently are unclear and fail to connect with the game's very spongey enemies. All that said there is some endearing enjoyment to be found in seeing the Source engine pushed to its boundaries.

Zeno Clash is a very short game but also a very unique one. The main combat mechanic is fist fighting and the world is the most original setting that I've seen in quite a while. These two things blend together really well to create a highly stylised game, that while rough around the edges, is really quite fun.

The combat is pretty fast paced for the most part. You'll be sprinting around, dodging enemy attacks and then punching your enemies when they leave an opening. There are also a few guns in the game, but when someone gets close to you they will knock these out of your hands forcing you in to a fist fight. The guns serve as more of a situational addition to the melee combat; that is much more fleshed out. May main issue with the combat is the big slow enemies that you have to use large melee weapons to damage, they really slow down the gameplay and aren't that fun after a couple of fights. Overall, fun combat that fleshes out a mechanic well that isn't used in many games.

The world of Zeno Clash is weird. There are bird people, mutated guys and various other odd things. There are some Asian influences but most of the stuff feels more other worldly than like anything else. This on top of the stylised vs screens when you start a fight and the odd and campy plot create a really unusual game but in a good way. This world has an incredible style that just makes you want to play more if you like it. My biggest issue here is the lines of dialogue can be a little cringe worthy at times.

I went in to this game not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. I'd definitely recommend the game for the uniqueness alone. It is a little rough and was clearly a lower budget game when it came out. It is also quite short so maybe get it on sale if you aren't quite sold on it. I'm going to go and give the sequel a go after I've finished this review.
