I knew it! It's a mobile game! No wonder all the "gotcha" mechanics. Although the gameplay was interesting, as usual the developers have a biased knowledge of difficulty, no matter what, there is no easy mode in this game, it's either hard, hard, hard, or guess what, hard.
What happened? The previous release of this developer was FTL and the music was great, but here, I already forgot the beats.
The story is... never ending, rinse and repeat, in the end, the game has no real ending, you saved this world, now save all the worlds in every universe (aka never ending). A game with never ending story has no story at all. The three Act Structure has been tested for thousands of years, if you have no ending, you have no story.
Overall:
- Gameplay ---> Interesting
- Music ---> Forgetable
- Story ---> Non existent
amazing game. i hate all turn-based games and i still absolutely love this game. this is a game to take with you on a desert island.
Simple to understand, difficult to master. This is like the roguelike version of chess. Would really recommend this game for people who are into Turn based strategy or even into tabletop games like Catan, Scythe, etc. The best part is that the developers gave a free update!
Fun game, lenient enough where you can make a mistake or two, but still challenging in a way that keeps me coming back for just one more try. Every loss feels like it's your fault and every win feels like a success brought about by what you'll call "genius", but in reality you just slammed your head into a brick wall long enough until things just worked out.
This game absorbs my life i neglect family, friends and any possible aspects of a meaning relationship to play it , i need help but its so good if i die lonely , destitute , and unloved while playing it .... its fine
Awesome unique turn based mechanics. Not as good as FTL but still another cool game from them.
Quick brain teaser. A lot of variability.
Beautifully made game. Really well done.
One of the greatest turn-based games of all time.
It lives up to the expectations of another game from the creators of FTL
Its worth the cash
this game's really good thanks for coming to my review
you like turn based combat ? you like saving civillians ? you like mechs ?
doesnt matter you can smash bugs !
Battletech meets Starship Troopers? Yes please
Very good gameplay loop. Challenging. Amazing art. You can see that the developers put a lot of heart into this one. If you're into tactics and roguelikes you cant' go wrong with this one. I truly recommend it.
Graphics: 2/2 Detailed pixel graphic. Perfect for a mech game of this type.
Music: 1/2 Energetic and intense. It can get a little repetitive though.
Atmosphere: 2/2 Intense & direct. The games wants you on the battlefield playing mech vs vek chess.
Story: 0/2 Not story reliant and focuses on its rogue-like elements. That makes it feel more repetitive unfortunately.
Challenges: 2/2 This game is all about the challenge. It goes from landing perfect victories to an absolute disaster in a single-misclick. Plenty of combinations and possibilities.
Overall 7/10. A fantastic turn-based strategy rogue-like with awesome mechs.
I like playing this at 3am panicking over a single turn for like 20 mins
This game was perfect and I respected the developers.
Then they came out with a major free update with tons of new squads and settings and enemies and maps.
Now it's even more perfect and I respect the developers even more.
Buy this game.
A big beetle shot me shot then burnt to death.
Good game.
Perfect puzzle game, flawless!
yo, this ish is lit, my n-word, real talk. buy this ASAP, holmes. everything is everything.
It was a fantastic game before the 2022 update, and I look forward to sinking another ~60 hours into it afterwards.
more Into the breach more free. 10/10
It looked like a fun little game, but it feels like way more than that after playing a little. Combining the well-designed game mechanics and the solid sci-fi theme, it sucks you in despite the basic retro aesthetic. Bite-sized missions with just a few turns each, but each turn takes a fair bit of thinking, and no detail feels unimportant, both in combat and in between missions.
Pretty much just Subset Games' take on chess - a lot of fun, you can see where they've taken bits from FTL and improved upon them
This game is cool like hell. It warms up once you stick in your quarter because this game is pre-generated mech armies duking it out. The villian's army name is Vek and they are basic backyard bugs like cattlepillar, flys, and terizo. I recommend other players play green team to start because you will not get far in your first run. This game is challenging in every good way imaginable. You use orbs to level up mechs and ships, and keep one preferrable pilot names Abe because he has armor blocking specials. This game was made for you and me.
hyped for new content! awesome strategy game
I was surprised by the replayability of this game. I was even more surprised to see that it shares a universe with FTL, which is another game that I love and which was made by the same team that made this.
Bought it for the second time. This game is a gem.
3-5 hours for the first run, but the real fun is unlocking and playing with the bonus squads, all of them with such different styles of strategy.
Also the decision of how many islands you are going to do in each run affects the strategy needed.
This game has at least 100 hrs of content and free DLC is coming soon.
It's so obvious that this game is a work made with passion and soul. There's no lootboxes here, no payable DLC, no feeling that this is just some soulless cash-grab. It's just a lot of fun for people who want some childhood memories brought back to life and enjoy turn-based strategy.
The actual gameplay is easy to learn, but difficult to master. It feels rewarding though, as each achievement is also in-game "currency" used to buy other teams, just like the games of yore. It's a weird hybrid of Chess meets dystopian insect infested hellscape defended by mechs. I think it's brilliant, and it really grows on you.
Being that these are the devs behind F.T.L. it's reeking of charm and lots of hidden goodies, with a very likable soundtrack. Honestly, there isn't much else to say. These guys make amazing games, and if you are an older gamer who feels burnt out by the modern gaming industry, you owe it to yourself to try these guy's games out.
Great gameplay, great artwork, great music. All in this neat little package but goes deeper and deeper...
Very nice chess-like game by the creators of FTL.
Great strategy game. Rogue-like combined with Advanced Wars.
Wow. Unexpected Gem.
Such a simple game, but very fun. Very challenging, and it has that "just one more try" element. The game is very rewarding and even when you fail a mission, you just want to hop right back in and try again.
If I could describe it, the game is almost like a mash-up of a tactics RPG and chess. Why chess? because while you may know the very next move of the aliens, you actually need to be thinking 1-2 turns in advance--because the aliens tend to be much more mobile than your mechs. So, there is a high amount of strategy in considering how the aliens will react to your choices and what their future targets will be.
The story is familiar, but not cookie-cutter. The maps have similar baseline rules regarding protecting/saving cities, but then with added dangers / complications / objectives / disasters (so it's not simply kill the bad guys). Terrain, weather, dangers--all these kinds of things can also be used to your advantage against the aliens if you plan correctly.
Progression/character development may be the weakest part? The game gives very basic tutorial on how to improve your mechs with "energy cannisters." There are also coin rewards on some maps that can be used later in the game at certain locations, and finally more advanced mechs can be unlocked via internal achievements. But all of these systems feel more complicated than they need to be.
And in general most of your early runs will be spent dying... a lot.
But at least it's fun. :D.
Difficult but entertaining, with plenty of challenges and combinations to fill some time. Nothing revolutionary, but a fun tactics game you can play a few times
In the opinion of this aficionado of strategy games since the 1990s: The best casual strategy game ever made. Full stop.
Your Go-to if you want 1-2 hours of your life go whoooosh!
Great strategy game, but too short. Hopefully this game gets an update or DLC or even Into The Breach 2.
it's like Earth Defense Force but instead you play chess, incredible 10/10
Everything about the game is great for what it is, I'd highly recommend it.
Addictive strategy game that really feels more like solving a little grid based puzzle. The way the level design and difficulty generate, you're almost never put into a situation you can't solve. Got a solid amount of playtime out of this game (although not quite as much as it's more acclaimed predecessor FTL) but still a blast to revisit every so often.
The main complaint I would have is that there's less overall variety between runs than your average roguelite, but the systems in place allow for a more curated experience. Very few times playing this game did I ever feel like a death was undeserved.
I'm such a sucker for pixel graphics. When I saw "Into the Breach", a new game from creators of "Faster than Light", I knew I was gonna buy it sooner or later. When the game was hit by a discount, that time had come.
Into the Breach follows the same basic principle as FTL. At the start of the game, you select a pilot and a squad of mechs. After that, you take the squad through several "worlds", completing missions and earning experience and gear. The game is pretty innovative and unique, and presents quite a challenge for the brain cells. It's also fun to play for the first 20 hours or so, but becomes insanely repetitive soon.
Basically, once you've completed a playthrough with any squad, you've seen the whole game. There's only achievment hunting after that.
My score: 6/10
The amount of destruction of public property would secure me a comfortable place on the foreign terror organization list. Fun game though.
Right Said Fred - So Sexy It Hurts
So Right
This game is amazingly fun: you basically need to position your troops in order to respond to the enemy's attack, which has already been telegraphed. It feels amazingly satisfying to pull off a genius move that makes enemies hurt each others (killing themselves in the process) and the replayability of the game is off the roof. Really a gem, would recommend it to anybody !
If you like turn-based combat games... Why would you though? a huge number of them are boring, repetitive and they don't add anything new to the genre but "Into the Breach" is different, It almost redefines the whole genre and of course it's so much more than just " Chess with robots". Every turn you'll be placed in a checkmate scenario which forces you to make strategic decisions based on the situation. "Into the Breach"rewards the player for being creative,
Fun as Hell, 5/5.
One of my all time favourites to play a quick game when I just need a break from work or life. Absolutely love the music and the ambiance of the game, even on harder difficulties.
Highly recommend if you're an RTS gamer and just need to take your mind off things
Really fun puzzle game, complimented by incredible visual design. The mech vs kaiju theme gives the game a deceptively massive scale that constantly made me forget I was basically just solving block puzzles. Albeit, some of the best I have ever encountered. Fantastic title!
Must have a 5head to play this game
I had a reasonably good time with this game, but found the decision space a bit crunchy and slow for my brain. This (for me at least) lacked the chaos throw yourself against the wall and enjoy the failures FTL gave me. I won the first two times on easy, something I never would've managed playing FTL. Losing the final battle because I confused one enemy attack with another was extremely frustrating 4 hours into a game and I never really got further into it after that.
one of the best strategy games i've ever played. unique twist to the genre makes it really interesting
This is a great puzzle game, and I generally don't like puzzle games.
Clean controls, smart and forgiving gameplay design, beautiful art direction, 10/10. Really makes you feel like a post-apocalyptic time travelling jaeger pilot. Hoping for a sequel.
Simple and fun game. Pretty challenging too, gotta think about your moves.
another smashing good game from the folks that brought us FTL. 10/10
https://youtu.be/qycAwt5GoBs
From the makers of FTL we have another fun game in which you will waste your life on!! I enjoy the turn based strategy because it is simple to learn, and as you continue on you get better, and before you know it your making great moves that you wouldn't have seen a few play-throughs before. The missions are short and sweet, normally only consisting of a few turns, your mechs are awesome, and get better as you can earn more of them for each play-through. So each time I play with different mechs its almost like a new game with new strategy.
I have attached some gameplay above so you can see if this is a game for you!
you can actually mod this game, so you can have custom pilot's avatar. now my squad is composed out of azumanga daioh cast, my friends, system shock 2's ai and sseth tzeentach
A clever strategy/puzzle hybrid that gives the player a fantastic array of tools to work with. Constantly rewards your creativity.
Enemies telegraph their attack at the beginning of the turn. Your attacks knock enemies back. Meaning you can do interesting shenanigans like force enemies into a position where they attack each other. Gets a pretty cool/10 from me.
If you like strategy games but hate RNG, this is a must-have.
Cleverly designed strategy game!
The game provides lots of information so that you always feel like you have full agency, and it provides lots of different options that make you excited to try new strategies.
The only note I have is that if you're coming from something like Fire Emblem, you won't find that sort of colorful characterization here.
trolley problem simulator where you can save the world by having your team of giant mechs slam dunk kaiju into lava
Absorbing and challenging - I like it!
It's like chess with more choices in both pieces and interactions. High replay ability with very intelligent design.
As much a puzzle game as a combat game, it is quite enjoyable
I approve.
The strategic combat is pretty cool.
It's by Subset Games (the FTL people). You already know you're in for a good time. Plus it's getting a major free update next month.
A very good and original game.
One of my favorite games of all time. A unique twist on turn-based tactics games, with excellent writing.
Best turn based strategy rpg.
No RNG on attacks, every works the same always (with some exceptions)
small numbers, precise tactics.
Every round is a combat puzzle, managing your resources.
Nice pixel art, nice ost
Into The Breach is a maddeningly well-constructed turn-based tactics game, that distills genre gameplay into bite-sized damage-and-positioning puzzles in a way that I've truly never seen done before. There is (almost) no randomness in combat, you always know exactly what will happen every turn, down to the enemy's turns as well - you'd think that always being able to see what the bad guys were doing would make the game too easy, but in this game it only *barely* gives you the edge you need to eke out a victory. Play it safe or push your luck, play it again and again, each session takes a few hours maybe. Masterpiece of a game.
its an okay game im just stupid
The strategy is so efficiently tuned. Practically every turn requires careful consideration and creativity to solve. There's a lot of depth too, with each mech loadout team playing dramatically differently, as you aim for achievements each run (to earn more unlock currency). It's the roguelike unlock hook at its best. Plus the items during your run!! You will definitely agonize over loot decisions and resource allotment, if you're into that kind of thing.
I found myself coming back three years later and getting drawn right back in. Amazing game that should inspire other work in the future.
Another master piece by one of the most genuine developer
Very fun game. Gets you thinking every step of the way.
Levelling mountains has never been this useful
a must play if you like turn-based strategy
Fun puzzle game with a cool theme and excellent form. Subset are masters of their craft!
I never got hooked with strategy games, despite trying multiple times, but this one has a really nice learning curve. The core mechanic where enemy warns you about their coming action, gives you just enough edges to overcome some situation that feel overwhelming at first, which brings a super rewarding feeling.
Really cool game with lots of strategy!
Games such as these are always a great reminder of why you don't need any AAA game, when you can play something fun instead. This is one of the most instant-enjoyment I had in a very long time. Stunning artwork, the sandbox the game gives you to toy around with is rich and it feels natural in a gameplay-perspective and overall just a super polished experience. Recommended for anyone who likes to think twice before they do anything. The game is hard but fair and it's worth every cent.
Fun turn-based combat. It's a goddamn miracle,
Great game with a ton of replay value.
If chess and pacific rim and terminator had a three way, Into the Breach would be their love child. There's not a lot of games like it. It has made me feel like a genius and an idiot more times than I can count. And better yet, there's more to come in a free update soon. I'm trying to hundred percent this thing before the expansion drops. An amazing title, definitely get this one.
like advance wars just 500% better in everything
I've not been using Steam for very long, maybe a few years but this is one game that was on my radar for a while, When I eventually bought it I was not disappointed. It's an incredible game, a lot of depth and style to the gameplay and presentation. It's challenging (sometimes it feels impossible, and that's the point) but fair, for the most part.
Looking forward to the update in July :D
If you even sorta think mechs are cool and love turn based strat games, I'm sorry that you have not already tried this game.
The mech teams present interesting gameplay puzzles and the worldbuilding is charming and dire, while never dragging you below a struggling hero.
Play this game.
Ruin your run because of one miss click or not understanding how the thing that isnt explained works.
When you set up combos right, this is satisfactory like no other game I've played.
Roguelike turn-based strategy. Absolutely incredible, buy it now.
Amazing game. One of the best roguelites out there that combines chess and x-com. Quite a few different teams to choose from, plenty of upgrades to equip on your team of mechs. Achievements aren't just for Steam but unlock things in game as well. It's just a masterclass of game design.
The game appears like nothing special at first glance. Just another strategy game right?
Similar to other games by the same publisher everything is rewarding, polished, & enjoyable completed with great music. Every play though is unique with the lure of discovering new pilots, regions, etc. Earning achievements goes towards new mechs. Each mech has a different feel & play style to further mix-up each play though. The soundtrack works great for studying too. Sound fun? Give it a whirl
This game is top 3 of all time for me. Incredible game design.
I got this game free on Epic. When they announced the Advanced Edition, I was so happy that I decided to buy it here and do it 100% again before the update hit. Having played it to 100% once before, it was still a fun, exciting experience!
I believe the battles are not generated - they are handcrafted. But there's A LOT of them and you only face a few each run, so this fact doesn't make it feel repetitive - instead you get the bonus of having the battle not feel clunky because it was procedurally generated, without the downside of the game feeling limited-
The different pilots and weapons you can get throughout a run also help make each run feel more distinct from others, but that's limited, all runs with a single squad will still feel very similar. Still, this means you can get good at it!
The customization of mechs and the pilot abilities are very fun to play around to come up with interesting builds, though some pilots are inevitably better than others - I'd say there is a very clear top 3.
My one complaint is very minor, and it's that, in their effort to show as much of the backstory for the game as possible, they've written some truly awkward lines for some of the characters, since those lines are essentially the only way we have to get glimpses at the game's lore. For those who've played, I'm thinking specifically of a couple of lines a certain character has about being adopted.
But yeah, this is a great game and I recommend it A LOT. The visual design is excellent, the gameplay is fun, the music is fantastic too! It's got it all.
One of the best games of all time. Seriously like Pacific Rim puzzles!
Why haven't I written a review for this yet? Best strategy game I've ever played, bar none. Just the right level of complexity where you'll sometimes pull off turns that make you feel like a genius, and sometimes think you're coming up with one of those genius turns but about to make a huge mistake because you failed to account for some small thing.
The graphics are perfect, the difficulty level is perfect (it often feels insurmountable, which only forces you to stay engaged and use every tool at your disposal), the teams vary nicely in their playstyles and there are just enough mission options and objectives to give you the chance to be more ambitious if you're feeling confident, or dial it back a bit if you're barely scraping by. Love it, one of my desert island games for sure.
Awesome game. totally worth it
